10 Beers for 10 Years at Lock 27

April 10, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Today is the 2nd release in Lock 27’s 10 Beers for 10 Years promotion releasing a beer from the Lock 27 Brewing vault to celebrate their 10th Anniversary! The re-released brews were made by Lock 27 at some point over the past decade but were eventually retired – until now. In coordination with the re-releases, customers can earn a chance to win limited edition anniversary prizes. With each 10th anniversary beer purchase, customers will be offered a stamp card that they can fill up with stamps for each anniversary beer purchased. The more stamps collected, the bigger the prize.

Release # w is 1492, an American Red IPA, was first brewed in 2013 as part of a Hop 101 experimental brewing series educating Lock 27 Brewing customers on the distinct characteristics of different hops. The Columbus hop was a fan favorite—enough to be officially named 1492 and be put on tap a few more times through 2017.

This brew is the perfect blend of strong hop flavor and sweet malts, with a moderately strong bitter taste that retains a dry finish and lean body – which makes IPAs so beloved. Its flavorful notes of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit make this Red IPA so distinctive, with an overall balance of sweet and hoppy.  Ohio.ABV- 7.7% and IBU- 77

Over the next month, Lock 27 Brewing will focus on the often-overlooked stories of this historic year from the perspective of the Native American community. They’ll be holding an educational event at the end of the month to highlight and celebrate Indigenous culture, contributions, and innovations. They’ll be sharing what the year 1492 meant to Native American people, and how their global contributions shaped the world that we know today. $1 of every 1492 purchase will be donated to the Sunwatch Indian Village to support the Native American community in Dayton,

This historic brew is hitting the taps at Lock 27 on April 14th at 5pm! Stay tuned on the 10th of each month for the next release.

Local Entrepreneur Offers Gift Box of Local Products From Women Owned Businesses

April 7, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Ever wanted to send a gift box to a friend, but also support local business as well, but don’t have the time to do the running around to pick up local products?

Well now there’s a way!  Erin Thomas Bektas, a local grad student at Bowling Green University, is taking part in a 12 week entrepreneurial program called The Hatch. She’s been working all semester long on hatching her idea, researching and branding it and now she’s beta testing her concept: Curated City Gifts.

It’s a gift box company featuring goods curated from small, local, women-owned businesses and packaged by city. She is piloting the program here in  Dayton.

This test box featured product from 8 local women-owned businesses:   Heart Mercantile Wholly Grounds Smales Pretzel Bakery Ciao Bel Fiore Fleur Thought Artisan Soap Paperreka and Peace on Fifth.

Each box will come beautifully boxed with a letter press card describing all of the products included.  Here’s what this first test box includes:

Erin explained that when choosing items to include in the gift box she had to choose products that have a a long shelf life, could be easily shipped and fit her theme of women owned businesses for this first box.  She envisions rolling out Columbus as the next city, where her twin sister lives.  Her sister is currently handling the social media fo Curated City Gifts. Keeping it a family business, her husband is working on creating the website to sell these boxes online.

This very special gift box of curated products from Dayton is going fast! Contact Erin Thomas Bektas or email [email protected] for purchase. You’ll even get free delivery in the Dayton area if you
purchase before 4/8.
After the pilot for the gift boxes ends April 21st, as part of the class Erin will pitch her concept to a group of Bowling Green Alumni and funders for a chance at an investment based on her business plan and pilot.

BBQ Pit Stop Now Open on Smithville

April 3, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new BBQ join in town, but we’ve been eating his meat for six years from his Smoking Barrels food truck. They are the reigning champ of the Yellow Cab BBQ Rodeo in the pulled pork category from the last time the event was held in 2019.

And yes, the food truck will still be out and about, event with the restaurant opening.

Co-Owner Damon Daniel says he opened the bricks and mortar eatery on April 1st and looks forward to feeding folks year round.

Located at 2615 S. Smithville Road, next to the Sweet Retreat, BBQ Pit Stop will be  open Tuesday – Sunday for carry out or delivery via door dash.

The menu features chopped chicken, pulled pork, chopped brisket and fried ribs, as well as burgers and loaded fries and nachos.  Sides include slaw, kraut, baked beans, green beans, cheesy potatoes, crinkly fires and mixed greens with ham. They offer two sauces, sweet or spicy.

The loaded nacho’s start with crinkle fries or tortilla chips, and then are stacked high with your choice of pork, chicken or ground beef, your choice of side on top of the meat and all drizzled with nacho cheese served with pickles and jalapenos.

The fried ribs are seasoned with a BBQ rub then battered and deep fried.

While we were there, they were experimenting with some ideas for a brunch menu.  We tried the deep fried sausage biscuit with gravy and we’d order it again if it makes the menu.

Beavercreek Restaurant Closes After 13 Years

March 23, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Founder and Senior Pizzaiolo, Spinoza’s Pizza Glen Brailey announced today via Facebook that his restaurant at the Mall at Fairfield Commons is closed, effective immediately.

Here’s the post he shared:
“Owning and operating a restaurant is a huge challenge even in the best of times, but the current economic environment is especially daunting. As a locally-owned, independent restaurant, Spinoza’s has been especially challenged by the industry-wide labor shortages, rising price inflation, and interrupted supply chains. It has become an overwhelming daily struggle to maintain our service level, food-quality standards, and our operating hours.
I have been a restaurateur for over 35 years. At a point in my life when I expected to have more time to work “on” the business, I find myself, out of necessity, pulled back into the daily operations to work “in” the business. This has created a physical and mental strain that I can no longer endure. Therefore, I have decided to close Spinoza’s permanently, effective immediately.
Recently my goal had been to identify and secure an interested party to take over the ownership and operation of the restaurant, someone with the energy and dedication (and time and money) to take Spinoza’s to the next level. But those efforts have proven unsuccessful.
Spinoza’s has had a good run. The past 13 years have been filled with many memorable moments…from sold-out beer dinners and fundraising events to jam-packed evenings with world-class musicians to afterhours conversations on the patio with friends and patrons. These good times will remain as fond memories for me, my staff, and for so many of our friends and neighbors. Spinoza’s was a hub, a connecting point for guests and staff alike. I will miss being at the center of that hub. Thank you all for your support and patronage over the years.”

The Best Chicken Now Available Late Nights at Caesar’s Drive-Thru

March 23, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Back in 2016 we first introduced you to gas station chicken at the Town & Country Shell Station.

Well now that same chicken is available at Caesar’s Drive Thru in Washington Township, located on 725 just east of McEwan Rd. You’ll be able to pick up chicken strip meals, chicken sandwiches and and a few other chicken treats.  Or go across the parking lot and enter the quick serve eatery with a full menu of options, located in the strip center that also houses Five Guys Burgers and Rapid Fired Pizza.

Caesar’s Krispy Krunchy Chicken will be available seven days a week and open for late night eats, until 2:30am during the week and 5:30am on Friday and Saturday.  The menu includes your classic fried chicken, available by the piece, as tenders or in a sandwich, honey butter biscuits and more.

And their line of signature sauces give you plenty of options for your tender, your biscuit, your boudin bite, the list goes on and on! The first sauce is always free, additional charge for the second and beyond. My favorite is the cajun sweet & sour!

While the chicken is the star, don’t miss out on trying the side dishes. Also available but not pictured, macaroni and cheese.

The Krispy Krunchy Chicken Miami Valley locations in Kettering (Town and Country Shell) and Bellbrook (Wilmington Pike and SR 725 in Bellbrook) and now this location are all locally owned and operated businesses, with a licensing agreement from Krispy Krunchy Chicken to be their food supplier. So when you’re in the mood for chicken, check them out!
