23 Fundraisers To Support in October!
Dayton long ago earned a reputation for being a city that gives back. According to the history of the Dayton Foundation, NCR founder and Chairman John H. Patterson championed innovative projects for the betterment of the community. Joining him in his enthusiasm was his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson, son of John Patterson’s brother, Capt. Robert Patterson, all active community leaders in their own right. A leading businesswoman, Julia Patterson Carnell helped establish the Dayton Art Institute by donating works of art, a mansion that served as the museum’s first home and $2 million towards the construction in 1930 of its current facility.
Robert Patterson was a senior executive at NCR and a leader in community affairs. He helped to found the local Boy Scouts and the Dayton Rotary Club and was active with the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce and Miami Valley Hospital.
Today there are over 4000 nonprofits in the region, and to continue the legacy of taking care of our community, there are hundreds of fundraising events to support them. To see our complete list of charitable events for 2019 check our DMM calendar.

This year’s performers will once again bring variety, joy and a different kind of engagement to the stage. They’re part of what makes TEDxDayton special.”

Ethnosh Introduces International Dining Experiences to Dayton
A popular dining initiative that originated in Greensboro, North Carolina is coming to the Miami Valley.
Ethnosh, an organization that plans monthly dining events called “NoshUps” at immigrant-owned restaurants in North Carolina, is partnering with civic innovation lab The Collaboratory to launch its model locally in Dayton.
The concept is to discover the most delicious international foods locally during casual tasting events where guests are able to sample and learn about the authentic cuisine being highlighted. At the same time, guests will meet and hear the stories of the owners and families coming to America and getting into the restaurant business.
Greensboro resident Donovan McKnight founded Ethnosh in 2014 out of a love for cross-cultural discovery and food: “My wife is the daughter of an immigrant,” says McKnight, “and grew up surrounded by global food. When she took me out to restaurants I became fascinated by the food, but more so the people behind the food. . I began developing relationships with the families, and I thought, “What if I could facilitate this experience for my community?’” That’s how Ethnosh was born. To date, the Greensboro, NC outfit has visited more than 40 restaurants and food trucks, with thousands of attendees. “Food has the power to bring people together,” says McKnight, “to dispel fear by creating commonality across cultures, and build bridges across the table.”
The Dayton initiative marks the first expansion of the Ethnosh network through its partnership with The Collaboratory, a regional civic innovation lab located in downtown Dayton. The Collaboratory acts as a catalyst for initiatives in the region like The Dayton Sewing Collaborative, X FACTOR and Porchfest.
Collaboratory founder Peter Benkendorf met McKnight while attending a national urban development conference about five years ago and the two became friends. According to Benkendorf, when he learned about Ethnosh a couple of years ago, the light bulb went for its alignment with Welcome Dayton, the region’s immigrant-friendly initiative, and the gears started turning.

“What I like about Ethnosh is its emphasis on cuisine, culture and community, as well as supporting local immi- grant-owned businesses,” said Benkendorf. “The NoshUps are about new culinary experiences, but they are also focused on sharing the personal stories and journeys of the restaurant owners and their families. NoshUps are set up with large tables, so we are also building community, which is a core value of The Collaboratory.”
“With hundreds of immigrant-owned restaurants in the Dayton region from every part of the globe, there is an in- credible wealth of cultural experiences out there waiting to be discovered. Ethnosh is a perfect fit with the Welcome Dayton initiative, since Welcome Dayton is committed to supporting immigrants and refugees and celebrating their contributions to the region. Ethnosh is a great way to bring people who love food and those who are curious about other cultures together to support these locally-owned businesses,” said Monica Harris, Coordinator of the City of Dayton’s Welcome Dayton Initiative and part of the Ethnosh team.

“What I love about this business is not just sharing the food I grew up with, but meeting and sharing my story with Daytonians of every walk of life who come into Olive. The community has been so welcoming and I could not be more pleased to help Ethnosh get started in Dayton,” said Shokri.

Who Makes Dayton’s Best Martini?
On Thursday, Sept 11th from 6-8pm you’ll have the chance to sample and select Dayton’s Best Martini. In the second year for ARTINI, this fundraiser for Culture Works, will take place at The Grande Hall. Local mixologists have been challenged to create an art inspired martini for the event.
Funds raised at this event will support the mission of Culture Works, our local arts advocacy organization that strives to support a vibrant and attractive community. From providing inspiring educational opportunities for our children, to attracting and retaining employees in our region, to adding beauty and entertainment to our lives.
Local bartenders and mixologists will be crafting art-inspired martinis for you to sample and select your favorites. Each bartender’s table will have their inspiration image displayed next to their mini-martini tastings. Judging from some of the names of the cocktails: Water Lilies, Cherry Blossoms, Metamorphosis, Purple Rain, The Rose Blush, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the creativity of these bartenders will certainly be on display.
Last year’s champion Tara Goffe from Milano’s will be there to defend her title as will representatives from Smith’s Boathouse, Miami Valley Gaming, Watermark Restaurant, Mack’s Tavern, Salar, Table 33, Stillwrights and Lily’s Bistro.
You’ll also have a chance to experience the creation of art at the event. Boy Blue will be doing his live inkwork at the event. Jes McMillan from the Mosaic Institute has created a mosaic piece inspired by the ARTINI logo and guests at the event will able to help create a piece of work on the spot. Both art pieces will be raffled off at the end of the evening

The Best Chili in Dayton
Last night the IBEW Union Hall off Poe Avenue was packed with folks supporting the 32nd annual Ambucs Chili Cookoff! This charitable evening raises funds to serve handicapped individuals with mobility equipment. Organizer Paul Jankovich has chaired this event as a volunteer for years and he spends months recruiting chili makers, coordinating the auction and gambling games that make this event such a success. The $20 ticket that covers all the chili, hot dogs, beer and wine you can consume also make it a true bargain to attend!

We had a chance to taste a dozen different bowls of chili and here’s how I rank them:`
Dayton Dining’s Favorite: Meadowlark– a hardy flavor, with big chunks of beef and garnished with a green onion sauce and we loved that they shared the ingredient list!

Meatiest: Rivertown’s Joe Cooper Chili– named after the author of the best book ever written about chili, included his own recipe in With or Without Beans, and it doesn’t have beans in it. They also offered a 2nd option- John Dayton’s Chili, which they explained to me was most like the chili your mom made if you grew up here, and yes, this one had beans. While Rivertown’s Chili closed it’s Miamisburg restaurant they are still doing catering and special events!

Biggest Kick– Los Reyes chili was soupier in style with a hot spice flavor that left you with true heat in your mouth!
Sweetest- The Brunch Club served up a chili that was on the sweet side with low heat and a cinnamon finish, served up by the same smiling faces that greet you each morning a the downtown eatery.
Best Garnish- Christopher’s Restaurant served up a solid chili, but what put them over the top for me was their garnish buffet of cheese, onions, sour cream, crackers, nuts and the most yummy Garlic Cheddar Jalapeno biscuits!
Eaton Kennedy’s served up a hearty chunky chili that had a pretty good flavor as well. Other participating competitors included: Slyders, George’s Restaurant, Bullwinkle’s, Atrium Grill, Harrigan’s and Chef Daddy’s. And shame on those restaurants that signed up but didn’t show up.

All the guests got to vote and the People’s Choice Awards for Best Chili ? were:
1st Place: Christopher’s
2nd Place: Meadowlark
3rd Place: Brunch Club
Congrats to all and mostly to AMBUCS and all the specially built tricycles they will be able to provide to facilitate therapy for disabled children and adult as well as ramps for families in need of mobility help.
