Crooked Handle
Crooked Handle Brewing Co. Adding 2nd Location
On Saturday, Crooked Handle Brewing Company announced plans to open a second brewpub in downtown Piqua. The project will transform an existing 10,000 square foot building to include a brewery, warehouse style beer hall, a full kitchen, an event space, and an outdoor biergarten overlooking Piqua’s emerging Lock Nine Park.
The adaptive reuse project was announced at the “Down A River – Down A Beer” event which is held annually along the Great Miami Riverway in Piqua. City of Piqua Community and Economic Development Director Chris Schmiesing made the announcement commenting, “Crooked Handle Brewing Company is a first-class operation that offers quality food, drinks and entertainment in a relaxing atmosphere, and we are extremely excited to welcome them to our community.”
Crooked Handle Brewing Company will be purchasing the property located at 123 N. Main Street from Piqua Granite and Marble Company. The brick structure dates back to the early 1900’s, and was previously occupied by motorcycle and car dealerships and numerous other uses. The new plans for the building call for the removal of various partitions and equipment to highlight the historic character of the building. The new configuration of the building will include two primary spaces, one for dining and the other for special events. The Warehouse Beer Hall will be located in the more industrial former garage space and will be the primary drinking and dining area and feature views of the brewery operations and provide access to the extensive patio areas overlooking the Lock Nine Park. The former display area, dubbed the Showroom, features large windows along the Main Street frontage and will function as a flexible space that can accommodate a variety of special event types. A full-service kitchen will be centrally located between the two public spaces with an order and pickup window easily accessible to both sides. The exterior of the building will feature attractive signage, a new entry inviting guests into the brewpub and a biergarten covered by a trellis fabricated from a dismantled gantry crane formerly used by the monument business.
Crooked Handle Brewing Company opened its first location in December of 2015 in Springboro Ohio, where they produce award winning craft beers, and offer a premium selection of wines, ciders, spirits, signature cocktails, and live music. In 2020 CHBC added a full kitchen that is now serving a menu of made from scratch pub fare. The Piqua location will provide similar and expanded offerings along with the Showroom being available to rent for special events.
Crooked Handle Brewing Company is owned by Jason and Kristy Moore, and Jeff and Emily Pedro. When asked what attracted them to Piqua they commented, “The timing was right. We really like the vision for the redevelopment of the downtown riverfront, and the location is ideal for what we offer. We see a real opportunity in Piqua and are excited to be a part of what is happening in the community.”
The design team for the project includes Gamble Associates, PorterFanna Architecture, Booker Design Collaborative, Omloop and Choice One Engineering. Urban Improvement Company (UIC) is the development consultant and Denligner Construction will serve as the general contractor for the project. The renovation work is expected to begin fall 2021 and be complete by late summer 2022.

Crooked Handle- Great Beers and Now Good Eats!
Crooked Handle, the Springboro brewery located in the strip center anchored by Dorothy Lane Market, has been serving up some great brews since December of 2015. They’d often have food trucks or even promotions for DLM’s pizza’s. They even added a full bar, so you can choose between the Berry Boro Blonde, the Bombs Away IPA or a Moscow mule. But they never really had much to offer in the way of sustenance to accompany their beers.
Well that’s changed as they’ve added a kitchen and quietly rolled out a pretty extensive food menu a few weeks ago. I was able to take a peek into the kitchen and looks like they’ve done it right! With a kitchen manager and crew that really understand how to put out great food in a relatively short amount of time. I’ve eaten there twice already and I’ve got to tell you it’s good! Currently following covid safety procedures, you order and pay at the register near the front doors, get assigned a # and then a food runner brings it out to your table.
On my first visit with a friend we tried some of the appetizers. Starting with some shareable apps, like traditional nachos, beer cheese and pretzle bites to flatbread and hummus, crispy cauliflower bites and even a charcuterie board and my favorite, the Crooked Tots-loaded with Beer Cheese, Onions, Jalapeños, Sour Cream, and Green Onions and the option to add a protein like chicken, beef or mojo pork. Most of these are in the $6-8 range, except the boards $9 for a 1/2 and $16 for a full board.
On my next visit I tried the CHBC Burger – Beer Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Roasted Mushrooms, Bacon, Fried Egg, and Lettuce and choose onion straws as my side. I could not get my mouth open wide enough for this ginormous burger- but even eating it with a fork it was one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. And yes, I should have taken a picture, but I was so excited to dig in, I forgot

A New Peoples Choice Voted In At Beer!
Over 500 beer lovers gathered today at The Yellow Cab Tavern for the annual annual beer tasting event that is a celebration of Dayton brewing culture. All of the Dayton area breweries submited one beer for tasting and attendees were able to try a 6oz pour from all 13 breweries. Then you get to vote for your three favorite in this unique “people’s choice” event.
Musical entertainment by Todd The Fox, and outdoor games like cornhole and giant jenga kept the crowd entertained and food trucks kept them fed, as they worked their way through the following beer list:
Star City Brewing Adena APA American Pale Ale
Hairless Hare Brewery Strawberry Kolsch
Crooked Handle Roadside Peanut Butter Porter
Dayton Beer Co Upright Kolsch
Fifth St Brew Pub Mango Cure All Cream Ale
Carillon Brewing Co Berliner Weisse
Lock 27 Wicked Hopsta IPA
Warped Wing Trotwood Lager
Eudora Mother Fuggle Brown Ale
Toxic Brew Brunette Belgian Brown
Nowhere in Particular Beat You Wheat
Yellow Springs Grapefruit wobbly wheel
The camaraderie of the local brewers was obvious, as many of the owners and managers were on hand, sharing insights on their beers, the industry’s explosive growth and upcoming plans for August’s 7th beer week celebration.
“Considering that there were no breweries in the Dayton area just four years ago, it is great to see the number of breweries growing and that they all have so much support,” shared event organizer Brian Johnson.
In the first year of this event Fifth Street Brewpub was declared the people’s choice. Last year Hairless Hare Brewery edged out the first champ by just 7 votes. Tallying the votes this year put Eudora in third, second place went to Yellow Springs Brewery and for 2016 the popular vote was in favor of the Peanut Butter Porter from Springboro’s Crooked Handle. “With Crooked Handle being the newest brewery and taking home the people’s choice award just goes to prove that Dayton’s a region that supports all of our great breweries,” Johnson says.
Votes were counted after the event was over, so no trophy photo was available, but we’re sure you’ll be seeing this big stein behind the bar at Crooked Handle, when you visit them at 760 N. Main Street, in the same shopping center as Dorothy Lane Market, just off St Rt 741.

Crooked Handle Brewing Co. Opens For Christmas
The Miami Valley’s newest brewery opened their doors up tonight for a friends and family preview in the Springoboro Settlers Walk shopping center. Crooked Handle owner and head brewer Jason Moore he and his partner Jeff Pedro Jr started shopping their business plan for the micro brewery about 2 and 1/2 years ago. They found two Springboro investors and signed a lease for their Crooked Handle Brewing Co. location at 760 N. Main Street, just around the plaza from Dorothy Lane Market, on May 1st and began ordering equipment soon after.
And then they waited. Equipment they expected in a couple of months didn’t arrive in full until November, pushing their opening back. While waiting they finished all the construction of the 3,600 square foot brewery and tap room. Their occupancy has been set at 104, with plenty of seats at the bar and a small lounge area of leather couches and come spring they’ll add another 20 seat on a small patio.
Jason and his wife Kristy, who will run the tap room, used some of that waiting time to get their Cicerone Server certifications. The certification requires competent knowledge of beer storage and service issues as well as modest knowledge of beer styles and culture and basic familiarity with beer tasting and flavors and basic knowledge about brewing process and ingredients.
With all of the equipment finally in place, they began brewing. Tonight for the preview they had 3 beers tapped, one they called Batch #1, which Jason admitted wasn’t exactly what he planned, but that’s typical when home brewers go from 5 gallon batches to a 7 barrel brewing system.
The Farm Saison seemed to be the crowd favorite at tonight’s tasting. Coincidene that the Saison is Jason’s favorite beer style? We think not. Beers were available in 5 oz tasters, pints or growlers to go. The other beer on tap was Your Mom’s Oatmeal Stout, rolled oats with a chocolate, nutty finish.
Moore says the next to be added to the taps are an IPA and an Amber Ale. By then end of January he predicts they’ll have all 10 tap handles filled with their beers. A quick tour of the cold room filled with kegs and 26 six barrels, Jason shared they’ll be doing some local distribution. Later on they will add bottling or canning and down the road they will be looking for a larger production facility.
Dorothy Lane Market and Milano’s have already signed on to carry Crooked Handle brews. While the Tap House will not have a kitchen , a notebook of to -go menus was seen on the bar tonight.
You’ll get your chance to check out Dayton’s 12th brewery this Christmas, when they will open the tap room at 4pm. They will have limited hours during the holidays and start working a regular schedule after the New Year. Cheers to Crooked Handle!
