September 20, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

14291805_1788152114787860_2693349244618174545_nSeptember 21st is the United Nation’s International Day of Peace, and is the last official day of summer. The cusp of the Autumnal Equinox and a worldwide celebration of peace is the perfect day for Dayton’s 2nd annual Dayton Big Quiet.

Organizers from Heartfulness Dayton and Venus Child Productions have come together once again to host this free community event, to demonstrate the inner peace that comes from yoga and meditation. At 5:30pm, there is a free yoga 45 minute yoga class hosted by three area instructors: Melissa Ledinsky of Real Deal Yoga, Jeanine Parisi of Day Yoga, and Alex Keller of Do Yoga Dayton. Please bring a mat if you participate in the portion of the program.

Immediate following the yoga session, meditation trainers from the Natural Path Meditation Center in Beavercreek will do a brief introduction to the silent, heart-based meditation style known as “Heartfulness.” It’s non-denominational, and can be practiced by all faiths. Some chairs will be available, however if you can, please bring a blanket or pillow to ensure you are comfortable. The event will wrap up by 7pm.

Remember world peace starts with each of us individually!

The Werk Out is Dayton Band’s Biggest Event Ever

August 2, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

Phase2 Werk Out 2016It’s incredibly exciting when one of our own home grown Dayton bands makes it big. Many Daytonians are not aware of the incredible national following The Werks have created. After ten years of touring, most recently from an adventurous Alaskan tour, they are back to their native Ohio to throw their biggest party yet, the 7th annual Werk Out Music and Arts Festival.

The festival started closer to Dayton, but as it has skyrocketed in popularity, it found it’s home at the Grateful Dead’s old stomping grounds, Legend Valley Concert Venue in Thornville, Ohio (formerly known as Buckeye Lake Music Center). This year’s festival is the biggest and boldest yet. Music fans were thrilled to see the amazing line-up of both national and regional acts, which include some of the top names in the jam and electronica scene, including STS9, Lettuce, and Greensky Bluegrass.

This year’s festival includes special collaboration sets that are certain to be unforgettable:a daytime memorial set dedicated to the memory of beloved former Werks member Norman Dimitrouleas; Twerkapod, which is a late night 90’s music tribute set with members of Twiddle, The Werks, and Dopapod; Daft Funk, a tribute to Daft Punk by Earphunk; and an appearance by Everyone Orchestra with special guest Todd Stoops.

This is one of the premiere music festivals in Ohio, and Dayton Ohio couldn’t be prouder of our home town boys making it big! Congratulations to the Werks family, and for fans, don’t miss this highly anticipated summer festival!

How to Go?

General admission festival passes are available now for $139.99, Additional ticketing options are also available. The Werk Out Festival tickets are available now at http://www.thewerkoutfestival.com/site/get-tickets.

Leap and the Net Will Appear Workshop

June 17, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 11.37.43 AMRenowned local author and teacher, Katrina Kittle is presenting a new life workshop entitled LEAP & THE NET WILL APPEAR: Steps for Creating Positive Change. This is the first time the class has been presented as a one-day retreat on Saturday June 25th. Previous classes have been presented as a 3 part series. It’s exciting to get a whole day to learn, explore and evolve!

When I spoke with Katrina about this workshop, she explained: “This is a life class for anyone who’s feeling stuck or craving change in any aspect of their life. Someone asked me if the workshop was encouraging people to leave their jobs, but that’s not the focus at all. The change you seek can be ANY aspect of your life: personal, professional, fitness, relationships. One woman in my first group wanted to “give back,” she was tired of putting “volunteer” on her New Year’s resolutions year after year but not doing it. She has since created two libraries for St. Vincent’s homeless shelter. How cool is that? I really love doing it and I really feel it helps people.

12096190_10153620216636101_7559983738525667160_n

Katrina Kittle is a local autor, teacher and presenter at Dayton’s Tedx event

Elizabeth Gilbert says “I’ve never seen any life transformation that didn’t begin with the person in question finally getting tired of their own bullshit.” That really resonated with Katrina a few years back. She does exercises that help people actually name what they want, what’s in their way (pretty often, our own bullshit!), and how to overcome those obstacles.

You know how so many life-shaping transformations happen because of personal disasters, heartbreaks, and hardships? Those external events push us off the cliff into change and that’s why so many of us resist creating our own change–we picture it being something huge and reckless like “I have to quit my job!” “I have to leave my partner!” or “I have to leave the country!” and it overwhelms us. But the reality is we can transform our lives and galvanize change through small doable steps. Those steps establish habits. That habit gathers momentum. An object in motion stays in motion.

The workshop will take place at the Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Centerville (8690 Yankee Street). They are offering us a comfortable, private space with a full working kitchen. Coffee and water will be provided, and you may bring your own lunch (there is a fridge and microwave), or add $10 to your registration for a box lunch from Boosalis Baking & Cafe (your specific order will be collected closer to the workshop date, but feel free to check out their website to see your yummy lunch options).

Rooted in Love Benefit at Trolley Stop

June 8, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

13083113_10156949074785374_4334447045004795723_nRooted in Love is an all ages benefit concert aimed at raising funds to help a local family offset the mounting financial challenges that come with the devastating news that a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Last year was very challenging for Aaron & Lisa Spoores. Having one child begin high school, while balancing the obstacles of Autism with the other, and then downsizing from two incomes to one, was extremely difficult. Then came the cancer diagnosis. The 6 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy, a year of astronomically expensive IV immunotherapy, and other required treatments.

12219342_10205183576974005_962334586533314961_nThe crushing physical, emotional, and financial toll caused by cancer can seem insurmountable to even the strongest among us. This is a disease that has touched all of us in someway or another and requires shared strength of community to overcome. No one can do it alone.

Please join us this Saturday June 11th from 2-6pm at Trolley Stop, in the Oregon District. Donations will be accepted at the door as well as several donation buckets throughout the venue. There will be T-shirts, raffles, and a silent auction as well.  The Trolley Stop has been very generous in donating 10% of all sales from the entire day to this event so please come early, stay late, and feast upon the culinary delicacies that the Trolley Stop has to offer. Grover Plays Free Show at Trolley Stop

April 26, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

Screen Shot 2016-04-26 at 7.32.21 PMInsider tip! There is a FREE show at Trolley Stop this Friday April 29th, 2016 with two incredible bands, Grover and Common Center. Plus that fabulous patio? It’s a no brainer for Friday night fun!

On the fringes of the jam band scene, local rock quartet Grover, blend funk, soul, and jazz, in a down and dirty rock band that comes across unpolished and “garage” as much as they do highly-skilled, almost veteran.

Common Center is a group of individuals from Covington, Kentucky that gather to form a collection of sonic exploration. Their all-original material arises from a vast array of influences morphing together to create a unique sound previously unheard, but longed for, by the ear. They combine powerfully upbeat as well as tranquil themes with mystic, other-world intertwining melodic elements from instrumental and vocal harmonies.

Enjoy a beautiful evening with some of the region’s funkiest talent!

April 20, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

The Dayton music community is coming together in a way that we’ve never seen before. Local music experts are volunteering their time and knowledge to benefit musicians and bands in the area through the first ever Music Power Conference, being held this May. This one day, all-day event is absolutely packed with music business keynotes, panels, clinics, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring. Attendees with have the tremendous opportunity to learn new ways of approaching audience development, and overall become more successful in the music industry, both locally and at large. For local musicians, this is a “don’t miss” event!

Speakers and sessions include:

Silent Meditation Relay Sunday April 17th

April 14, 2016 By LIbby Ballengee

Experience_Heartfulness.org_Logo-488x500Join the Natural Path Meditation Center for a day of Heartfulness meditation silent retreat on their serene, seven wooded acres nestled in the heart of Beavercreek . Help to elevate your own inner condition, as well as raise the vibration of our surrounding communities to create a more harmonious world!

You are welcome to join us for as many meditation sessions as you like. You may come to the center and meditate, or even join us remotely for the meditation sessions. There is never any fee charged to learn, or join us in meditation. We can accommodate close to 300 people in our hall.

If you’re coming for the first time, please come 15 minutes before the start of a meditation session to be given a brief introduction to the Heartfulness method of meditation at our welcome desk. Heartfulness is a silent, heart-based meditation on the source of light present within the heart, with the added benefit of yogic transmission.

Light refreshments will be available. No heavy breakfast or lunch will be provided. Plan to be light in body, mind and spirit!
