TIFF Day #6 – 2024

I want to make sure I send a big THANK YOU to Dayton937 for allowing me to use their platform for daily postings while at TIFF.  It’s a great way to stay in touch with all of you while’s I’m on the road.

My first movie today was a BIG one.  It’s a musical set in many cities around the world (produced by France) – but mostly set in Mexico. EMILIA PEREZ, dir Jacques Audiard (France) “Featuring fearless performances from Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and the amazing Karla Sofía Gascón, the latest from director Jacques Audiard (Rust and Bone, TIFF ’12) audaciously merges pop opera, narco thriller, and gender affirmation drama.” (taken from TIFF catalog) I didn’t quite know what I was in for, but this musical, gangster melodrama took me for quite a ride.  I was a huge fan of RUST AND BONE over a decade ago, so I was intrigued to see what Audiard would do with a musical.  It’s big and bold and whirlwind of styles and voices – and it ultimately works in its sometimes frenetic style…and the three leads are really wonderful (Saldaña really shines).

Next on my list was RIFF RAFF, dir Dito Montiel (USA) “With an all-star ensemble that includes Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, Jennifer Coolidge, and Bill Murray, the latest from director Dito Montiel (Man Down, TIFF ’15) is a pitch-black comedy about family, loyalty, and murder.” (taken from TIFF catalog) I 100% know there’s an audience for this film…It’s just not me.  Back in college, all of my classmates loved Tarantino.  He made a joke out of violence..and it was widely copied and embraced by numerous filmmakers.  I wasn’t interested.  The screenwriter for RIFF RAFF noted that several years ago, people read his script and told him “people don’t make movies like this anymore”…he then noted that the director fought to get it made and now people are loving it – he said, “it’s like the new old-fashion.”  The comedic use of shooting people – seeing their brains splatter on the wall..watching someone get their head bashed in…all surrounded by dialog that’s meant to evoke laughter – it’s all here.  It’s just not my thing.  (In addition – There’s some really bad idiot dialog in the beginning of the film to set everyone up…and then the use of bad voice overs – so even more reason for me not to like it.) The one aspect of the film I did like?  Jennifer Coolidge!  From her first entrance on screen to some key moments of droll delivery, she’s gold.

After meeting Jake at the train station, I scurried to my next screening – MISERICORDIA, dir Alain Guiraudie (France, Spain, Portugal) “The latest feature by acclaimed French writer-director Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake, TIFF ’13) is a deliciously twisted tale of sexual repression in a small town marked by death.” (taken from TIFF catalog) This quirky, sexually repressed, dark and funny tale is set in a very small, pastoral town (it seems to be populated by about 8 people), and it’s a slow burn.  With unsettling occurrences throughout, this story is a quiet treat.  The director was sadly not in attendance because the film is currently getting a release in France – and he had obligations to make appearances at many of those screenings.

My last film of the night was one I was excited to see – BABYGIRL, dir Halina Reijn (USA) “Nicole Kidman is captivating as a high-powered executive who risks everything when she starts a sexual relationship with an intern (Harris Dickinson) in this thrilling erotic drama from writer-director Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies).” Sadly, I found this one to be a disappointment.  The audience was laughing and gasping at every turn…but I found myself quite often rolling my eyes and shaking my head.  Though Kidman’s performance is very good, I questioned a lot of the material and thought if felt repetitive.  It’s being billed as an erotic thriller, but I found very little thrilling or fresh material here.

TIFF 2019 – Day #6

Hi Everyone!

I’m now well beyond the half-way mark, and today’s 4 screenings took my grand total to 22 films so far…this means I’ll certainly hit the 30+ mark for this year’s TIFF.

AERONAUTS was my first movie of the day. “The Theory of Everything costars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones reunite for Tom Harper’s high-flying tale about a 19th-century scientist and hot-air balloonist making altitudinal and meteorological history.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  This thrilling adventure is a little too “easy,” but it is also rather fun.  That said, I can’t imagine watching it on a television screen at home – the thrills are best felt on a big screen with a great sound system.  Redmayne and Jones are charming as can be, and though the costumes are sometimes a little “too much,” I felt like there’s certainly an audience who will revel in this tale – and cheer for the bold and brave female character in the central role.

Though it’s getting a wide release that won’t include us at THE NEON, I had to go see THE GOLDFINCH – based on one of my favorite novels of the past several years. “Theo Decker (Ansel Elgort) was only 13 when his mother died in a museum bombing, sending him on an odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day: a priceless painting of a bird chained to its perch, The Goldfinch. The latest from John Crowley (Brooklyn) is based on Donna Tartt’s bestselling novel.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  Though I felt like the film was off to a great start – making a lot of great decisions, this movie is one that actually needs more time.  We meet too many characters and never get to know them…which in turn makes the material lose its heart.  We never get too attached.  The source material is more intended for a mini-series than a 140 minute feature film, and I’m sad to say that I don’t think this film will go too far.

The new documentary THE CAPOTE TAPES was my third screening of the day. “Newly discovered interviews with friends of Truman Capote made by Paris Review co-founder George Plimpton invigorate this fascinating documentary on the author (and socialite) behind Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, while situating Capote in the 20th-century American literary canon.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  There is so much to love about this film – because at its center is the brilliant, hysterical, and tormented Truman Capote.  The interviews are divine, but the piece starts to lose steam in the last 30 minutes.  Though there’s not much room in the “marketplace” for an hour-long documentary (too long for a short and too short for a feature), it would be a much stronger piece at 1 hour.  That said, there’s so much good material here…but unfortunately, the director had to use cutaways because evidently there aren’t enough photos to put on screen during the tape recorded interviews…so he resorts to tracking shots of dinner plates, silverware and crystal goblets – thus so many visuals are uninteresting and do nothing for the story.  Luckily, interviews are great – so I stuck with it…and feel I know Truman a bit better.

The premiere of HARRIET, the very first feature film ever made about Harriet Tubman, was my last film of the night.  “Tony-winning Broadway actor Cynthia Erivo stars in Kasi Lemmons’ inspiring biopic about renowned abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery and risked her life to lead others to freedom through the network of safehouses known as the Underground Railroad.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  From seeing the trailer, I was a little fearful that this film was going to be too polished and not raw enough.  And though I think it could still use a little more indie grit, the story did indeed envelop me.  Kasi Lemmons explained that they decided not to use the often seen violent tropes of other slavery stories, they wanted to focus on this movie being about freedom.  Though we know some of what characters have suffered, we aren’t forced to watch it as with other recent films about slavery like 12 YEARS A SLAVE or BIRTH OF A NATION.  Instead, we get an adventure film with a true woman – a human being, not a super hero – who saves lives and should inform us all.  Though there were some devices that I thought wore a little thin, I still was completely invested in the story and loved learning more about this American Hero…and having many from the cast do a Q&A was incredibly insightful and all the more powerful.  This film really got the crowd going, and I think it will be well received in Dayton, too.

I’m getting this done a bit earlier than usual…and heading out to a party or two tonight.  My first screening isn’t until Noon tomorrow, so sleeping in is a possibility.

And for Steven, life as he knows it is good. Very, very good, in fact. 


But that’s where Martin (Barry Keoghan) comes into play. You see, Martin is a young teenager who dreams of one day following in Steven’s footsteps, which is why he’s spent the last 6 months or so mentoring the youngman. Or at least that’s what Steven is lead to believe. 


For what Martin is truly after is so sinister, so malicious, so … revenge-fueled that neither his mother (Alicia Silverstone), Steven nor the rest of the rest of the Murphy clan has any idea what he’s truly up to …


But trust and believe they will. And very, very soon …

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Creeps; people who enjoy the Saw franchise and all its sequels; people who will excuse an art house film that is well shot with a big name cast as something other than what it is; people you generally don’t hope to go on to have children

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? Anyone who sees the lackluster plot for what it is; those who find the characters/scenario over-the-top ridiculous plot that lacks any of the supposed depth, thought and/or exploration of humanity you would otherwise be led to believe exist in this film

SO IS IT GOOD, BAD OR JUST AWFUL? About 2-3 times a year, I come across a movie that is supposed to be a uniquely interesting experience. A film that is supposed to perhaps provoke, maybe even titillate or make you question something on a deeper, how does humanity-and-our-most-base-instincts-affect-us level, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is the type of movie that once you watch it, you’ll never forget it.


And that’s a shame – because given that the film is the cinematic equivalent to a rough bowel movement, I truly, truly wish I could.


Shot on location in my native Cincinnati, Deer is essentially one of those “man faced with an impossible choice” movies that feels like the team behind it dares the audience to make a similar difficult decision of its own: Sit through the entire 2 hours of torture that is the film’s running time. Where does the film go oh so wrong? Oh let us now count the ways …


First, the acting in the film is absolutely, for lack of a better word, terrible. Farrell and his family play the perfect suburban, white upper class family so stiffly to the point it is comically bad and highly unbelievable. In short, you haven’t seen characters this upper crust since Winthorpe’s friends sang in Trading Places and even they had more soul/realism in them than these characters. Whereas Farrell portrays his doctor as a man for whom his entire world is controlled and clinical, Kidman – who steals the easy-for-the-taking show – is prim and proper for the film’s first half to the point that her character’s attitude switch almost feels misplaced even though it is the only performance that drives the story forward. 


Likewise, Cassidy’s terribly over-the-top Stockholm Syndrome completely overrides whatever writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos was attempting to achieve with it, again become ludicrous to the point the film’s attempt to take itself so seriously – or maybe it’s not at all, a target if which intended also misses the mark – that her character becomes annoying. The work done by Suljic is admirable as he also maintains a modicum of reality in the situation, despite the fact the is so devoid of anything that doesn’t feel like a parody of itself that it’s hard to care.


Then there’s the absolute insane use of Alicia Silverstone as Martin’s mother. The less said about it, the better. There have celebrity breakdowns more entertaining – and less maddening – than what she exhibits in Deer, and that includes her token white character in a predominantly black film role in the long forgotten Beauty Shop.


Then there is the most problematic character of the film of all: Barry Keoghan’s Martin. A character that is essentially the devil incarnate with more charm, his Rainman-like presence (as a character, not as an actor) is a hard pill to swallow, especially given the lack of explanation for what he is able to do to Steven’s family. (I stay spoiler free as I know some of you will still be foolish enough to see this movie no matter what I say.) Manipulative and apparently intelligent on the level of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw character, his demeanor coupled with his desire to rationalize his actions is at the same time perplexing, comical, ridiculous and annoying. Martin is as much a caricature of a villain as Steven is of a man placed into an impossible situation, an undeniable fact which makes the entire film feel like an overacted, overwrought and nearly cartoonish 70s B-movie masquerading as a modern psychological thriller.


But trust and believe once the mask is off, The Killing of a Sacred Deer would be better as chopped venison on the bottom of a merciful editor’s floor.

TIFF 2017 – Day #3

Hello Everyone.

I had a couple nice surprises today.  Though I have liked some of Alexander Payne’s work (I adored his short in PARIS J’TAIME and I liked DESCENDANTS and NEBRASKA and ABOUT SCHMIDT), I wasn’t terribly excited about seeing DOWNSIZING.  It’s a satirical allegory about a man who decides to partake in a new government subsidized program that shrinks you – thus taking up less space, consuming less food, etc…it also allows you to live a potentially more lavish lifestyle – because your dollars go further when you need less of everything.  I wasn’t prepared for just how funny this film was going to be…yet still provide a mirror to contemporary injustices.  Critical response has been mixed, but I was engaged from beginning to end and liked what this film had to say.

Next up was the world premiere of THE CHILDREN ACT, directed by Richard Eyre (director of IRIS and NOTES ON A SCANDAL).  Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci star in this British film about a family court judge who must determine difficult cases – i.e. should a set of conjoined twins be separated if one will certainly die even though they’ll both die if left conjoined.  The screenplay is so smart, and Thompson is in top form.  There is no trailer yet for this film, and it has not been picked up for distribution…but I’m certain it will.  Thompson and others were there to introduce the film and then answers questions after the film.  It was a wonderful Q&A and I did manage to get a couple pictures. (there is no trailer yet for this film)

My last film of the day was the terribly dark and disturbing film THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.  (This film was shot in Cincinnati!) Starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, this film will is about a teenage boy who forms a relationship with the doctor who he believes is responsible for the death of his father.  After he befriends the entire family, he begins to terrorize them. With parallels and similarities to Greek tragedy (and in my opinion – Michael Haneke), this film is a in a category of its own.  The performances are intentionally a bit stifled and peculiar, but everyone is 100% invested in the off-kilter world that Lanthimos has created.  The sound design and score are an eerie and terrifying addition, and many audience members didn’t know what to make of this film.  (Which is kind of what happened with the diretor’s most recent film THE LOBSTER.)  Though I applaud the craft and was entirely absorbed during the screening of this film, it’s one that I have no intention to see again.  In my opinion, DOGTOOTH is still this director’s masterpiece. TIFF 2015 – Day #5

Half way through today marked the half way point of the festival.  And by the end of the day, I had seen 20 films in all…but there’s lots more to go.

My first film of the day was the thriller COLONIA, directed by Florian Gallenberger.  Starring Daniel Bruhl and Emma Watson, this film started out like a conventional political thriller about civil unrest in Chile in 1973.  But then it became an over-the-top cult escape thriller.  This is the story of Colonia Dignidad – a hideous compound in Chile that housed a religious cult and also served as a military torture prison.  Though entirely engaging, I found some of the characters to be of the Disney villain sort – thus making it seem like it couldn’t be based in reality.  That said, the story is based on fact, and seeing the actual photos at the end was a nice pay-off.  There were moments that seemed a little too much HUNGER GAMES driven – so I’m not sure who the intended audience is…serious subject but a little too young adult driven to rise to the top for me.

Next up was FREEHELD, directed by Peter Sollett and starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page.  This was a film I was looking forward to seeing, and I was a little disappointed at first.  Though the performances are certainly quite good, the film seemed a bit flat at first.  This film is based on the short documentary of the same name.  We played it at the Dayton LGBT Film Fest several years ago, and it went on to win the Academy Award.  It’s the story of Laurel Hester and her attempt to get her police pension left to her domestic partner in New Jersey.  Though perhaps a little “one-note” in this role, it takes Steve Carell to inject some energy into the film.  The original documentary covered the material that picks up in the second half of the film, and that’s where I became most engaged.  This story was groundbreaking in its role to bring marriage equality to New Jersey…and now that marriage equality is nationwide, it serves as an important reminder of why LGBT people have been fighting so hard.

Next up was THE FAMILY FANG, directed by Jason Bateman.  This film is based on a beloved novel, adapted for the screen by David Lindsay-Abbaire (playwright of RABBIT HOLE).  Starring Bateman, Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken, this is the story of a family who are reunited after an unlikely accident.  The parents are long-time, well-known performance artists who stage very public pieces that often come off as practical jokes.  Though certainly a very touching film, it is also terribly funny. Somewhere between FLIRTING WITH DISASTER and SAVAGES and even a little ROYAL TENENBAUMS (though more for its elements of family dynamics), this film became my biggest surprise for the festival.  I was intrigued enough to go…but was so delighted that I had.  It’s a wonderful film.  Bateman and Walken were there for a Q&A, and it was delightful.  It was clear that Bateman loved having Walken in the role, and he said “Everything Chris did was fantastic.  It was like killin’ babies in the editing room.” This film has yet to be picked up for distribution…but I bet it will be soon.

I had about half an hour to spare this evening, so I poked into JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE, directed by Amy Berg – it was not my intention to stay for the entire film (and I didn’t).  I was quick to learn that this documentary about Janis Joplin was made for PBS (I believe it will play on American Masters series).  Though intriguing subject material and certain to find a big fan base, this film wasn’t working so well for me on the big screen.  Much of the archival footage was so grainy and distorted via large format projecting…I think it will play much better on televisions.

THE ONES BELOW, directed by David Farr was my last film of the night.  “Eagerly awaiting their first child, a young couple in a tiny London suburb become involved in a psychological battle of wills with the tenants in the apartment downstairs…” (taken from the TIFF program).  Unfortunately, this film also looked like it would play much better on television – but not due to pixilation or grainy footage.  This thriller had some unintended laugh-out-loud moments…and in most other circumstances I would have left after 20 minutes.  But for some reason, I felt compelled to stay and so I could shake me head and roll my eyes at some very strange decisions in what had hoped to be a bit more of a nod to Roman Polanski.  Though there were a couple gripping moments, I ultimately found this film to be the biggest turkey of my TIFF experience so far.

GOD’S POCKET – One of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Last Films – Opens Friday!

It’s now time to bid adieu to our 3rd highest grossing film ever – THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Many thanks to all of you who helped make this film such a success. Thursday will be its last day at THE NEON. In addition, Thursday will be the last day for UNDER THE SKIN. Hurry down if you still need to see these films. Last weekend didn’t go as well as we had hoped for THE RAILWAY MAN. Though mediocre reviews may have kept some folks away, many of our regulars agreed that the film is actually quite powerful…and the performances from Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman are worth the price of admission. We will hold the film for another week. In addition, we will open the film GOD’S POCKET – one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final films.

Synopsis for GOD’S POCKET: Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Christina Hendricks and Richard Jenkins star in the directorial debut from John Slattery (known for his work on MAD MEN). “In the gritty, blue-collar neighborhood of God’s Pocket, Mickey Scarpato’s crazy stepson, Leon, is killed in a construction ‘accident,’ and Mickey quickly tries to bury the bad news with the body. But when a local columnist comes sniffing around for the truth, things go from bad to worse. Mickey finds himself stuck in a life-and-death struggle compounded by a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please, and a debt he can’t pay. Acclaimed actor John Slattery makes an impressive jump behind the camera with an assured directorial debut that shows he has a razor-sharp eye for conveying the absurdity, cruelty, desperation, and tragic optimism of the people he portrays.” (taken from IFC Films)

Don’t forget about tomorrow evening’s special presentation in celebration of National Architecture Week. The American Institute of Architects Dayton will present 2 special films on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:30. PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES (45 Minutes) celebrates the mid-century modern homes designed by Joseph Eichler in California between 1949 and 1974 and MONUMENT TO A DREAM (30 Minutes) traces the adventure of the St. Louis Arch’s evolution, from early concepts on the drawing boards to the fabrication of its stainless steel sections, and the triumphant placement, in a race against the sun, of its final section in the fall of 1965. Tickets, just $5 each, are now available at THE NEON’s box office.

“Stivers School for the Arts presents THE SHOWCASE 2014. This eclectic compilation of short films includes absurdly comedic work as well as hard hitting documentaries. Some of these films have already won national and regional awards. Following the show will be a Q & A with the student filmmakers. The Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus is celebrating the life and legacy of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk with a 2 1/2 week celebration. Over that time, the chorus will screen THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK at THE NEON as well as premiere a new work – I AM HARVEY MILK – at The Victoria Theatre. They will additionally host a brunch at Wheat Penny. More information on all these events (including ticketing details) can be found on the DGMC official site. If you’re only able to see the film (which includes the screening at THE NEON, a post-screening discussion with community leaders, and a reception at Serendipity Bistro), those tickets can be purchased at THE NEON’s box office for $15 each. This documentary from 1984 played a big part in the creation of the screenplay for the MILK biopic from 2008. It screens Thursday, May 22 at 7:15.

Toronto – Day #8 – 2013

My time in Toronto is wrapping up.  I’ll screen a couple films today and perhaps 1 film early tomorrow before I head to the airport.  It’s been a blast so far, but I am starting to drag.

The first film I saw yesterday was IGNACI M. – a Spanish documentary about an artist.  Brought up in a home with a mother and father who were also artists, this is an exploration of his relationships with his parents, children, and others in the community.  Ignaci is a colorful, gay, HIV+ man who takes 29 pills every day (the opening of the film has him explaining each pill – which is funny and heartbreaking all at once) and is willing to speak frankly with anyone.  Though I found this piece interesting, some of the interviews go on way too long.  I felt as though the editor was stretching this film to make it a feature – whereas it would make a much stronger 30-40 minute portrait. (The cheesy photoshoot moments didn’t help matters.)

THE RAILWAY MAN, based on a memoir by Eric Lomax, is the story of a man who is dealing with the demons of having been tortured while a prisoner of the Japanese troops in Thailand.  Starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman (among many other great performances in the flashback scenes), this film has lush visuals and strong performances.  Lomax, in real life, died just last year…and the director of the film told the audience “Lomax loved that Colin Firth was playing him…his wife Patti was at the festival earlier in the week…she loved being here with her best friend Nicole.”  This film is well done, and it will appeal to people who love historical, war dramas – like THE EMPEROR from earlier this year.

SALVATION ARMY is a quiet, directorial debut for Abdellah Taia – based on his own semi-autobiographical novel.  This is the story of a young Moroccan boy who is discovering his sexuality and social codes in Casablanca.  Told in two parts, we see his upbringing and familial relations…then we see him off to study in Geneva – where more political and social obstacles lay in wait.  With very little dialog and told in a very matter-of-fact style, this film is certainly not for everyone…but I liked it quite a bit.  (Below is just a clip – a trailer doesn’t exist yet.)

STOKER and WEST OF MEMPHIS Open at THE NEON!

We’re moving along this weekend. If you still need to see QUARTET, you only have through Thursday to catch it at THE NEON. On Friday, we start a new, stylish thriller which clearly pays homage to Hitchcock – STOKER. We will also begin a one-week engagement of the new documentary WEST OF MEMPHIS. Told and made by those who lived it, Berg’s unprecedented access to the inner workings of the defense, allows the film to show the investigation, research and appeals process in a way that has never been seen before; revealing shocking and disturbing new information about a case that still haunts the American South.” (taken from rottentomatoes) This story was told in a film called PARADISE LOST and its subsequent follow-ups…but critics agree that this film is a masterfully crafted summation that reveals fresh insights. On Thursday, March 28 at 7:30, “Peace on Fifth will present movie #3 for their trafficking awareness campaign – Start Freedom Dayton (Sponsored by Love146 Dayton, Stop Human Trafficking Dayton and Peace on Fifth). FLESH, a documentary about sex trafficking in the U.S., challenges our ideas of slavery, human trafficking & prostitution. The story is told by the girls who have escaped and those who are currently enslaved, former and current pimps, and modern day abolitionists. The post-screening discussion will be led by Elizabeth Ranade Janis, Ohio’s first human trafficking coordinator. Tickets: $10 day of show at The Neon. Advance tickets: $8.50 at Peace on Fifth (508 E. 5th 937-367-7215).” (taken from press notes)

This year’s edition of LUNAFEST – a collection of 9 short films made by, for and about women – will take place on Sunday, April 7 at 3:00. In addition to the nationally touring program (which you can read all about by clicking this LINK), this year’s local line-up will also feature a short film by WSU student Megan Hague – WOMEN WHO YELL. (I previously announced that Hague would be at the screening, but that has changed. She will not be able to attend.) Proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Fund and Planned Parenthood – Southwest Ohio. The suggested donation for tickets is $10 each (minimum of $5 per ticket). More ticket information will be available soon.

Downtown resident and NEON regular Hector Escobar wants us to screen the film BLESS ME, ULTIMA. In order to make the screening happen, we need to “sell” 65 tickets by the end of March. If that many tickets are reserved, the screening will take place Wednesday, April 10 at 7:30. (This is a lot like our screening of THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE. There’s no gamble. The film “follows a 30-day drift boat journey down the longest ‘undammed’ river in the lower 48. Intimate portraits of locals in both booming cities and dusty, dwindling towns along the Yellowstone River illustrate the history and controversies surrounding this enigmatic watershed leading to questions about its future. Connect with colorful characters, get lost in the hypnotic cast of a fly rod, and experience silhouetted moments of fireside stories on this heartfelt river adventure.” (taken from press notes) Tickets will be $11 in advance ($10 plus $1 service fee) or $15 the day of the screening at the door (cash only). Over the years, we have celebrated the work of local filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar. EMPEROR Opens Exclusively at THE NEON!

Omari Matlock, a former Daytonian, will premiere his latest film – DESCENT OF A SUPERSTAR – this Saturday, March 2 at Noon. “When money power and fame is not enough, a young pop star turns to habits put in place by dark spirits.” A minimum donation of $10 is required for each ticket. Each ticket includes admission to the film and to the After Party/Networking event at Therapy Cafe at 3:00 (be sure to bring head shots, demo reels & resumes to this event if you are in or aspiring to be in the entertainment industry). Toronto – THE FILMS – Day #5 (+ An Old Friend)

After getting some needed tickets early this morning, I met up for lunch with a friend – Bill Taylor.  We met in line for TALK TO HER at TIFF in 2002, and we’ve stayed in touch all these years. He’s a talented filmmaker, and we will screen one of his films – THE YOUNG PRIME MINISTER – at this year’s LGBT Film Fest (it plays with I KILLED MY MOTHER on opening night – Friday, Sept. 24).  Do you already have tickets?

In regards to screenings, I saw three films today.

First off was Susanne Bier’s IN A BETTER WORLD.  Bier is an incredible filmmaker.  The first film I saw by her was also at the 2002 festival – OPEN HEARTS.  She is also responsible for the original BROTHERS (the superior film on which the American remake was based).  IN A BETTER WORLD is quite wonderful.  The film goes back and forth from a refugee camp in Africa to a small town in Denmark…and follows two families along the way (one of the protagonists is a doctor who makes trips to aid with medicine at the camp).  There are lots of details to the plot, but the film is essentially an examination of ethics while pursuing justice.  The photography is lovely, and the performances are great.  Being that Sony Classics has picked it up, I imagine we will bring it to THE NEON.  (sorry…no subtitles on the trailer)

Next up was Julian Schnabel’s MIRAL – starring Freida Pinto (from SLUMDOG) and with smaller parts by Hiam Abbass (from LEMON TREE and THE VISITOR) and Vanessa Redgrave.  The film is the true story of an orphaned Palestinian girl growing up in the volatile Arab-Israeli War.  Though not his best work, the story is of epic scale and is a strong story.  With Schnabel as a Jew and the author of the book – Rual Jebreal (the main character of the story) – as a Palestinian, the creation of the film already nods toward peace.  The final credit states, “This film is dedicated to everyone, on both sides, who still believe peace is possible.”  This film will certainly spur discussion.

MIRAL was introduced by Schnabel, Pinto, Abbass, Jebreal and a couple other supporting actors.  Their Q&A after the film made the film have even more impact.

Lastly, I saw John Cameron Mitchell’s RABBIT HOLE – based on the Pultizer Prize-Winning play by David Lindsay-Abaire.  The film stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as parents who are grieving the loss of their 4-year old boy who was hit by a car.  The film opens 8 months after the accident, and though the film is full of sadness, it has very funny moments as well.  The film is honest and beautifully photographed.  I loved it!  As an added bonus, Mitchell, Kidman and Eckhart introduced the film (and many other cast & crew were in the audience).  This was the world premiere.

In addition to stars at their screenings, I also saw Dev Patel and Harvey Weinstein today.  (And I forgot to mention in an earlier post that Josh Brolin asked me for directions the other night.)
