Wedded Bliss: Square One Salon Takes Top Bridal Honor.

April 1, 2022 By Dayton937

We all love to hear about local success stories, and for Square One Salons, the honor of Best Bridal Make-Up (Ohio Weddings Magazine)  and a nomination for the yet to be named Best Hair Salon (Columbus Weddings) have recently come to light!

‘It all comes from the idea of going above and beyond for wedding guests,’ says Square One Brand Director, Laura Belle. ‘We try and ensure the entire day is relaxing and stress free at each location. We have wedding coordinators who take the pressure off the bridal party. We are aware that timing, level of service and just having a good time are part of the process. That’s the great thing about being a full-service salon, we have the ability to do it all!’

Square One has been riding high in recent months with ‘Best of…’ awards and ‘Outstanding Salons….’ recognition. ‘At Square One our guests are always number one. We know and understand there are so many moving parts on that special day! We consider all the factors when booking a wedding. We are fortunate to have many service providers on one team, under one roof! Our bridal parties love to bring in food and beverages…basically the whole PARTY into the salon! And why not? It’s their day!’ Belle continues. ‘Our make-up teams are magnificent. They are studied and really take the day seriously, but keep up that light energy that brides crave on the big day!’

Not all clients are eager to visit a salon, they choose off-site for their wedding day. ‘No Problem,’ says Belle. ‘Our teams love off-site events. We have a separate  menu for that, and we send the same Square One experienced team for these moments!’  Ohio has many, many salons and for Square One, the idea that they received mention in Ohio Weddings reinforces their drive to continue forward with their style of business and culture. ‘We stick to what works. Our make-up teams, actually all of our teams, get continuing education on all things related to weddings. We refuse to stay stagnant. Our teams are growing and we are elevating our skills on the regular.’

Square One, now over 20 years in the salon industry, sees a strong future with bridal a big part! ‘This company is all about enjoyment. We want the same for our guests, brides, homecomings, you name it….the experience here is always welcoming, fun and enjoyable!’ Belle says with a smile!

Square One Salons have 6 locations in Columbus, Oak Creek, University of Dayton, Downtown Dayton, Downtown Columbus and New Albany. They are headquartered in the Cannery Building in Dayton.

DAYTON LGBT FILM FEST Heading Into 12th Year!

September 4, 2017 By Jonathan McNeal

What do Bette Midler, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, Laura Linney, Ian McKellen and Laverne Cox all have in common? They all have films playing at The Dayton LGBT Film Festival this year!

Titles are locked down, marketing materials are ready to go, and visiting artists are securing their travel plans for The 12th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Fest – taking place next month at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

During the weekend of Oct. 13-15, the festival will screen 17 films (a combination of shorts and features) with ties to the LGBT community – ranging from American comedies to International dramas…from narratives to documentaries. Directors, stars and other creative individuals from a handful of the selections are slated to attend.

One special guest will be Jill Alexander, an accomplished actress and co-star of SENSITIVITY TRAINING (pictured above on the left). The committee selected the film from over 100 submissions this year and was unaware (until after booking the film) that Alexander grew up right here in the Miami Valley and attended Beavercreek High School. The festival is thrilled to bring Alexander back home to share her work with the community and her family.

On Friday, October 13, attendees of the Opening Night Film FREAK SHOW will be invited to the Opening Night Party at The Mudlick Tavern – just a few blocks from THE NEON. For $8, guests will see the movie and then enjoy a complimentary cocktail and appetizers – this is certain to be a very hot ticket.

Though festival passes sold out in record time this year, patrons will have a chance to get single tickets for each of the screenings beginning Friday, September 8. Details about the films and how to get tickets can be found on the official site – www.daytonlgbt.com

Sponsors for this year’s festival include PFLAG Dayton, The Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus, Sue Spiegel & Lisa Hanauer, The Human Race Theatre Company, Miami Valley Fair Housing, AARP Ohio, The Greater Dayton LGBT Center, MJ’s On Jefferson, Johnny Dangerously, Equitas Health, David Lauri, Square Once Salon & Spa, Marion’s Piazza, Ken Byers, Kurt Fleagel & Warren Riffle, and Westminster Financial.

THE NEON is located at 130 E. 5th St in downtown Dayton. For additional information, visit the official site – www.daytonlgbt.com – or call THE NEON at (937)222-8452.

Water, Water Everywhere….And Your Ticket To Protect It!

April 7, 2016 By Joshua Stucky

rain-barrel

It’s Earth Month, and Square One Salon is working hard to take care of it. Along with the members of the Ohio Chapter of the Water Committee of Sierra Club and supporters from across the state, the salons in the Dayton area are doing their part to protect our water supply. “We partner with the Sierra Club and Aveda every year to support clean water.” says Nina Dozier, manager of the downtown Square One location. “Our goal this year is $5000, which goes up slightly every year. So far, we have $3745.”

How can you get involved?

“We are having a raffle this year, and you have a chance to win $1000 which is divided $500 in Aveda products, and a $500 gift card for 1st place! We also have 2nd and 3rd place winners,  $750.00 and $500.00 prizes, respectively. Raffle tickets are 1 for $5; 3 for $10; or 6 for $20.” Dozier assures all supporters that “100% of the funds go directly keeping Ohio waterways clean. Raffle tickets are being sold at all 6 Square One Locations: University of Dayton, Downtown Dayton, Oak Creek, Centerville, Downtown Columbus and New Albany.

You can also support the Earth Month/Clean Water initiative by  joining the Square One Staff as they pour beer at the 5th Street Brew Pub on Sunday, April 17th from 12pm to 3:00pm. “You have to have clean water to make great beer,” remarked Canaan Good, who works at the salon. “I have been working with Square One Salon and Aveda for over 15 years, and I love their mission to save our water supply. Having children and seeing what happened in Michigan really hit home. I believe we can make a huge impact!”

“We love working with Aveda,” says Brent Johnson, one of Square One’s Proprietors. “Since 2007, they have raised $38 million to protect clean water. And the Sierra Club has helped us distribute dozens of rain barrels in the Miami Valley.” Johnson said you can learn about rain barrels by logging onto www.sierraclub.org/ohio. “One of the greatest parts of my job is knowing the company I work with cares this much about the Earth, ” added Dozier. “It’s nice to know we can make a difference.”

Protect Water, Change Lives is this year’s Earth Month theme. For more information go to squareonesalon.com or aveda.com/cleanwater. You can also reach Square One by calling 937.461.2222 to get information about Clean Water, Sierra Club rain barrels and Aveda’s mission.

New Michael Moore Film Now Playing at THE NEON!

February 13, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

Where_to_Invade_Next-727341632-largeHello Everyone,

We just opened a documentary that is insightful, optimistic and terribly funny – Michael Moore’s WHERE TO INVADE NEXT. Knowing Moore’s work, you might look at the title and feel as though you already know where this film is going…but it’s actually quite a different tone (more below). In addition, we’re holding ANOMALISA as well as the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS (we’ve even brought back the documentaries for a few screenings). On February 19, we will open the new highly-anticipated Maggie Smith film – THE LADY IN THE VAN.

Synopsis for WHERE TO INVADE NEXT: “WHERE TO INVADE NEXT is an expansive, rib-tickling, and subversive comedy in which Moore, playing the role of ‘invader,’ visits a host of nations to learn how the U.S. could improve its own prospects. The creator of FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE is back with this hilarious and eye-opening call to arms. Turns out the solutions to America’s most entrenched problems already existed in the world – they’re just waiting to be co-opted.” (taken from Drafthouse Films) Entertainment Weekly wrote, “Where to Invade Next is so heartfelt and sincere, it’s tempting to say that Moore’s mellowed with age. But beneath its innocent-abroad optimism, the film has a stinging truth that’s hard to ignore.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Our friends at ThinkTV are helping us once again to get a signal for our Annual FREE Oscar Party! This year’s telecast will happen on Sunday, February 28, and Ballots (where you can predict the winners for awesome prizes) are now available in our lobby. Our friends at Square One Salon & Spa are once again donating a fantastic prize that will part of our Grand Prize – “The Star Treatment.” Keep tuning in for more details!

“The Junior Leaguers Club of Dayton will sponsor a screening of OPPOSITE FIELD on March 5, 2016 at Noon. This is the club’s fifth annual fundraiser at THE NEON, and this movie is a classic underdog sports story about an Ugandan Little League team. This documentary is inspiring and will have the audience displaying a wide range of emotions as the team makes history as the first African team hosted by the Little League World Series. This is a great film for adults and our youth. The funds raised will go into the Junior Leaguers Club scholarship fund. The tickets are $30 for adults (which include movie, glass of wine, glass of soda, and popcorn) and $15 for students (which include soda and popcorn). Tickets can be purchased at THE NEON. Guest speakers for this screening will be Mr. Ron Johnson, president First Dayton Little League and Mr. Keith Byars, former NFL professional player and a little league player in his youth.” (taken from press notes)

Due to the upcoming holiday, we will have later hours on Sunday and earlier hours on Monday. Please see all of our upcoming showtimes below.

We hope to see you soon!
Thanks for your continued support!
Jonathan

New Salon & Gift Shop Now Open On Brown Street

November 23, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton’s newest businesses opened their doors today at 1132 Brown Street.  The building, formerly home to The Flower Shoppe which moved to Oakwood, is now home to Dayton’s third location for  Square One Salon & Spa on the 2nd  floor.  Several stylists from the original salon on Third Street  have moved to the UD neigborhood salon, allowing both locations to add new clients, as the original salon was often booked solid. This also allows room for new stylists, which Square One will need as they’ve already got a lease on a 4th salon in Centerville, near Whole Foods.

On the main floor of the building you’ll find an upscale gift shop, Agnes & Orson. Joshua Stucky, co-owner of Square One Salon & Spa, has partnered with two Square One stylists, Canaan Good and Misty Wells to open a store that carries wonderfully eclectic gifts, candles, and small home goods. Named after Stucky’s two dogs, the store also has a small selection of gifts for pets, an array of leather goods, and a collection of b12248249_726914000773218_560907564259529845_oarware.

My first impression of the store- it’s little bit classy and a little bit sassy! I picked up a few small novelty gifts, perfect for the office holiday gift exchange, saw a handbag I may ask Santa for and picked up several great gift cards, the kind they don’t sell at Hallmark!

The exposed brick, and reclaimed wood in the boutique give the place a rustic charm, the varied selection of merchandise make sure there’s something for everyone.  And the parking behind the store make it easily accessible.

8th Annual LGBT Film Festival – The Full Line-Up & Visiting Filmmaker News!

October 5, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Postcard2

Festival Passes have sold out, but single tickets remain for The 8th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Festival – scheduled for Oct. 11, 12 & 13 at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

The exciting weekend will kick off on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 with G.B.F. – sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa. From the maker of JAWBREAKER comes another hysterical satire of high school clique culture – this time focusing on the latest fashion accessory – the G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). Attendees will be invited to the Opening Night Party at CADC on the corner of East 4th and St. Clair – where they’ll be greeted with complimentary appetizers from Roost Modern Italian and live music by Sandy & Michael Bashaw. The opening night party is sponsored by Sue Spiegel and Lisa Hanauer.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6DJSGrfNbk’]

On Saturday, the films will continue at 1:00 with BRIDEGROOM – sponsored by PFLAG Dayton. This touching documentary recounts a romance between a young couple…and how one man was forbidden from attending the funeral of his lover. (This documentary started as a youtube video called “It Could Happen To You” – which has attracted close to 4 million viewers.)

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lhsXr2jbkg’]

Always a festival favorite, at 3:00, TOP DRAWER SHORTS will showcase the latest and best in short films from across the country and around the world. This program is sponsored by The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of “Torch Song Trilogy.”  Below is the trailer for DIK.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry1wypccGQg’]

REACHING FOR THE MOON, a beautiful period piece, chronicles the long-lasting love affair between poet Elizabeth Bishop and architect Lota de Macedo Soares. This film has won numerous audience awards and has played at prestigious film festivals around the world. It is sponsored by The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and starts at 7:15 on Saturday evening.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27YqB_UZ9u8′]

Later on Saturday night, the festival will play a fresh and fun documentary about the cult legend and John Waters favorite – I AM DIVINE. Sponsored by MJ’s Café & Johnny, this film will begin at 9:45.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJqw0hTAhXY’]

On Sunday afternoon, the festival will continue with THE NEW BLACK at 3:00. This film, sponsored by The Miami Valley Fair Housing Association, tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights…and it has a local connection. Steve Bognar of Yellow Springs shot a portion of this film!

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX4XiTSuuF0′]

The closing film – THE HAPPY SAD – will screen on Sunday, October 13 at 5:15. In the age of polyamory and blurred lines of sexuality, what really makes for a happy relationship? Two young couples in New York – one black and gay, one white and heterosexual – find themselves intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy in this captivating new film directed by Rodney Evens (Brother to Brother). Sponsored by Marion’s Piazza, this wonderful film has been playing at film festivals all summer.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmb5_S_DNmI’]

In addition to a line-up of critically acclaimed new films from across the country and around the world, this year’s movie-goers will be treated introductions and Q&A’s from at least two visiting filmmakers.

Darren Stein, director of the Opening Night Film G.B.F., will be flying in from Los Angeles. Last week, G.B.F. screened in Atlanta, and he’ll be off to Austin after the Dayton premiere. In addition to film and television work in California, one of Stein’s well-known films, JAWBREAKER, is currently being turned into a musical in NYC.

Guy Shalem, the award-winning director of the short film SOMETHING REAL, will also attend the festival. SOMETHING REAL is a celebrity packed short with a musical twist about today’s contemporary bar scene. The film marks Shalem’s first collaboration with Tony award winning composer and lyricist Jeff Marx (AVENUE Q) and 5-time Grammy-award winning producer, composer and lyricist, Mervyn Warren. Shalem has heard great things about the film community in Dayton, and he’s excited to get to town.

The Dayton LGBT Film Festival wishes to extend a special thanks to AIDS Resource Center Ohio for their sponsorship and assistance in bringing these filmmakers to town.  Additional sponsors include Ken Byers, Kurt Fleagle & Warren Riffle, and Chase Whiteside.

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival presents films that have thematic ties to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community – stories that aren’t often represented or celebrated in mainstream media. This year’s selections were picked from over 100 films, and though many of these films will not find mainstream distribution, they are strong pieces of work that merit being seen by a wider audience. The festival encourages film lovers from around the Miami Valley to support these strong films.

Single tickets – just $8 each – are moving fast.

THE NEON is located at 130 E. 5th Street in downtown Dayton. For more information about the festival, including full descriptions, links to official sites & trailers, and ticketing details, please visit www.daytonlgbt.com.

AMOUR and QUARTET Continue Successful Runs at THE NEON!

February 27, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

double posterHello Everyone,

Thank you! We had another great weekend. We truly appreciate your patronage and all the good word-of-mouth recommendations you’ve been giving regarding our films. QUARTET continues to be a big hit for us – it will stick around. Though numbers for the Oscar-winning AMOUR have fallen, it will stay for one more week (hurry down if you need to see it…many of our patrons agree that Emmanuelle Riva should have taken home the Oscar this Sunday). Remaining showtimes for this week are at www.neonmovies.com.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ0SupR0XgM’]

Though attendance was down for this year’s Oscar Party (we think some folks made other plans since we’ve been so busy in past years…and we realize there are lots of other options), we had a great time! Thanks so much to everyone who came…and Special Thanks to ThinkTV and Square One Salon & Spa for helping to make the night a success!

“This evening, February 28 at 7:30, Peace on Fifth brings you movie #2 in their series about human trafficking and exploitation. HALF THE SKY, based on the book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Dunn, takes you on a journey from oppression to opportunity. Because this film focuses on the oppression of women, we will explore the direct links of oppression of women and the growth of human trafficking locally and abroad during our after-movie discussion. This screening is sponsored in part by Gallery 510, Loretta Puncer.” (taken from press notes) Advanced tickets (before the day of the event) are only available at Peace on Fifth for $8.50 each (Peace On Fifth is located at 508 E. 5th Street in the Oregon District). Tickets on the day of the screening will be at THE NEON for $10 each.

Omari Matlock, a former Daytonian, will premiere his latest film – DESCENT OF A SUPERSTAR – this Saturday, March 2 at Noon. “When money power and fame is not enough, a young pop star turns to habits put in place by dark spirits.” A minimum donation of $10 is required for each ticket. Each ticket includes admission to the film and to the After Party/Networking event at Therapy Cafe at 3:00 (be sure to bring head shots, demo reels & resumes to this event if you are in or aspiring to be in the entertainment industry). Visit the facebook page for this film by clicking this LINK. Tickets are available at our box office.

Next week, we will share the line-up for this year’s Dayton Jewish International Film Festival and a few other special events on the horizon.

We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

The stylists of Square One Salon will have some hair raising do’s on parade this Sunday, April 29th, to raise funds to help the Sierra Club of Ohio.  Aveda’s April 2012 Earth Month campaign has inspired its network of beauty professionals and consumers in more than 30 countries to raise $4.5 million for the protection of clean water — a basic human right that nearly 900 million people worldwide fight for daily.

In support of achieving this goal, the Aveda Square One Salon And Spa will host a Hair Show to raise money for clean water.  Guests will enjoy a welcome cocktail compliments of The Venue, lite hors d’ oeuvres’ compliments of Olive, Coco’s, and Roost, a hair show put together by the staff of Square One, as well as a silent aution.

There will also be a a DJ playing great music, a cash bar, and each guestleaves with a goodie bag. The event will run from 1 – 3pm at The Venue, located at 905 East Third Street in Dayton.   Guests can RSVP at 937-461-2222 or daytonsquareone@aol.com.  Guest can purchase tickets for $15 at either Dayton Square One location or at the door the day of the event
