REVIEW: Paws Benefit Show At JD Legends

July 15, 2013 By Mike Ritchie Leave a Comment

The 725 Band (photo by Mike Ritchie)

On Saturday May 18 the Paws benefit was held at JD Legends in Franklin featuring Jadis, 725 Band and Clockwork Soul. The benefit organized by Jadis’ Dawn Rose was to help raise funds for PAWS, a no-kill non-profit animal adoption center serving the community for 32 years. Don’t shop, adopt! All donations are tax deductible. The Progressive Animal Welfare Society is a 501 (c)(3) organization which, through community help, finds good loving homes for shelter animals. Funds to help support PAWS can be donated through Network For Good; you can set up PAWs as your Kroger Plus card chosen charity, join Dorothy Lane Markets Good Neighbor Program or Gordon Food Services on the PAWS website.  Over 20 contributors and sponsors donated for the cause raffling off $150 worth of Monster Ink, an evening at the Funny Bone, 100 minutes of free tanning at Simply Brown, Grease Monkey, Options Hair Design, Patricia Rose Art and Quick Fix PC repair among others.  By the sunny volleyball beaches and the sun drenched cantina, the show begins.

The 725 Band started the evening with a collection of cool covers fronted by the powerhouse 4 octave voice of Ashley Watson who appears to have inherited the vocal talent of Janis Joplin and Nancy Wilson among others. She starts out showing she’s a little Runaway, singing from the heart on Barracuda and only a certain amount of voices can truly do that song justice. Paws doesn’t adopt out leopards, but they break out one of the 80’s hard rock giants songs of the ages adding a little bit of gunter glieben glauten globen.  Armegeddon It, are you? Some early Van Halen gets some love tonight, then Jackyl brings the sun shining down on us. In a unique medley of rock and metal riffs, Metallica’s Sandman becomes a Believer in Boston.  As the drinks, daiquiris and pina coladas, flow the crowds gets Lit, booze are often one’s Own Worst Enemy.  Watson lets out a rebel yell as band shirts are handed out for best fan yell. The sun gets Outshined by 725 as they finish with a Whole Lotta Love for Sabbath and the War Pigs.

Jadis (photo by Mike Ritchie)

Jadis (photo by Mike Ritchie)

Next up Dayton’s blonde debutant Mystie Rose and Clockwork Soul announced it was time to rock out with your clock out. Opening with the Pretenders and some Brass in her Pocket using her arms, legs, senses, fingers to get your attention, she’ll wink at you to make you use your imagination. They cranked out originals Until the End and the Masquerade portrayed in abusive relationships. They break out the chains with Would then sing about Lady Ga Ga. They bring back the 80’s nostalgia with an all skate Summer of 69. The dance floor opened for Count the Ways then everyone toked up Smoken with Charlie Sheen, then finished with some Straight Jacket Love.

Event organizers Jadis took center stage and you really can’t go wrong when half your group is comprised of hot chicks with instruments. They start out with a favorite because all their friends like a Low Rider. Let the Train Blow the Whistle the Man in Black says, causing a crowd dance off/hoe down. The Roadhouse Blues took over with some hardcore harmonica playing, hard living tales of yesteryear. The Zeppelin returns with a whole lot more love. Miss Tracy Chapman makes an appearance for One Reason while the screaming soul banshee wail of Miss Joplin wreaks havoc on Bobby Mcgee. They finish up with Sweet Mary rolling down the river and their own group Rebel Yell.

A special thanks to everyone who donated, sponsored, played and showed up to help support the PAWS.

The Last Waltz: Bringing The Movie To Life

February 13, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The Last Waltz

A still image from The Last Waltz

“You never know what to expect when they came on stage.  However you know that it was going to be great.”  This is what Jeff Opt said to me while the two of us sat around inside the Yellow Cab building.  What he was referring to in his statement about of the iconic groups of the 60s, The Band.  Jeff Opt is truly special.  He is one of the main coordinators of the yearly event Dayton Sideshow, an annual two day event that highlights the unique art that is being done in town.  Each year, the Sideshow will have a theme to the exhibition that will include a variety of work, which includes video, sculptures, paintings, photography, and live music from local bands.  What the Sideshow aims to do is to help individuals obtain a platform to show off their creations, and also to celebrate the local art scene.  If you haven’t been to one of the previous shows, do yourself a favor and check it out this year during the spring Urban Nights event, which will be taking place in May.  While sitting at the Yellow Cab building, Opt talked about the joys of helping others achieve their dreams.  “It’s a passion of mine.  I love being able to help others.”

For a couple of years, Opt had been dreaming of doing a show that recreated The Last Waltz, the final concert that The Band would perform as a group on November 25, 1976 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco (the same venue the group made its debut in 1969).  The Band comprised of Rick Danko (vocals, trombone, bass, fiddle), Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboard, trumpet, saxophone), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, saxophone) and Robbie Robertson (guitar vocals).  The Band was a hybrid of many musical influences, with the Americana folk sound blending in with the psychedelic traits that bands from Cream to Led Zeppelin were built on.  The statement mentioned earlier by Opt was true.  The Band wasn’t the most polished group to come to the stage, but you always were in awe of the way they played music.  It was beautiful how they would bring all these different components into their music.

Sadly, with Robertson wanting to have the group become strictly a studio-only band due to the exhaustion of always being on the road, along with Manuel suffering a severe neck injury after a boating accident, the group decided their to disband and have a farewell concert that will have some of the artists and bands that influenced them along the way, with a large horn section backing them. During the concert, artists from Eric Clapton, to Neil Young, to Bob Dylan performed as well.  The show was filmed by director Martin Scorsese.  In 1978, Scorsese released the documentary of the same name as the show, The Last Waltz.  The movie featured concert performances, and interviews with the band.  The Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made in many circles you talk to.  On February 24th, Opt’s vision of bringing the show to town will become reality.  “It is one of my favorite movies.  I just think that it’s cool watching this great band play one last time.  I thought it would be cool to recreate that movie.”

An all-star lineup of Dayton musicians rehearses for Such A Night in the Old Yellow Cab Building

An all-star lineup of Dayton musicians rehearses for Such A Night in the Old Yellow Cab Building

Such A Night: A Celebration of The Band’s Last Waltz will be taking place at the legendary jazz club Gilly’s Niteclub, located on 132 S. Jefferson Street, in Dayton, Ohio.  Close to thirty local musicians along with an eight piece horn section will bring the awe-inspiring film to life.  “All these musicians are excited about being part of this project”, explained Opt.  “Most of these guys have never played together.  So, to see this coming together is really cool.” Opt has been working on this project since last October/November, calling up people that he knew would be great for the show.  Each member will tell you one thing when it comes to the show, including Opt, “This show is going to blow some minds.”

The evening will not only be producing excellent live music, but it’s also going to be helping a cause that is going to help a great deal of people.  All the proceeds from people walking in will go to one of the Miami Valley’s great nonprofit organizations, The Foodbank.  Since 1976, The Foodbank has been helping a network of food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and backpack programs among others.  Being the largest hunger relief agency in the Dayton area, a single dollar will be able to provide eight meals to the hungry.  Nearly 5,000,000 meals a year are provided to children, adults, and the elderly.  It’s just another gesture of gratitude that Opt gives of himself.  “I am firm believer in helping others.  I want to be a good role model for my kids.”

The buzz of Such A Night: A Celebration of The Band’s Last Waltz has been astonishing.  The show was kept under wraps until the past couple of weeks.  It’s now gotten to the point where a small amount of advanced tickets are able to be purchased.  “I didn’t want to have a lot of people not be able to get to see the show.  So by doing just a limited number of advanced tickets, it just gives people a chance to come and watch, and not be turned down”, Opt said.  Opt believes strongly that the show will be something that people will be talking about for days after.  He hopes that maybe if all goes well, maybe we will do something like this again next year and beyond. “I was asked about doing The Who’s Tommy.  I think that would be cool, but let’s get Such A Night out of the way first (laughs)”, Opt mentioned.  Something tells me that Such A Night is truly just the beginning.

Such A Night: A Celebration of The Band’s Last Waltz  once again is on February 24th.  Show time is 7:30pm, and admission is $5.  Donations will be accepted at the door.

ARBITRAGE Now Playing at THE NEON!

October 5, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Special thanks to everyone who came out and supported THE DOWNTOWN DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL. With enthusiastic crowds, 3 visiting directors, and 4 sold-out shows, this turned out to be the most successful festival in THE NEON’s history. I’m pleased to announce that the votes for our audience awards were very tight…which means that audiences were really liking several selections. Our “Audience Award – Best Feature” went to LOVE FREE OR DIE, and our “Audience Award – Best Short” went to SABBATICAL. Many congrats to those filmmakers!

We’ve moved forward this weekend at THE NEON.  ROBOT AND FRANK just left, and today we opened the new thriller starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon – ARBITRAGE.  If you still need to see THE MASTER, you have one more week.

Synopsis for ARBITRAGE: “When we first meet New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller on the eve of his 60th birthday, he appears the very portrait of success in American business and family life. But behind the gilded walls of his mansion, Miller is in over his head, desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire to a major bank before the depths of his fraud are revealed. Struggling to conceal his duplicity from loyal wife Ellen and brilliant daughter and heir-apparent Brooke, Miller’s also balancing an affair with French art-dealer Julie Cote. Just as he’s about to unload his troubled empire, an unexpected bloody error forces him to juggle family, business, and crime with the aid of Jimmy Grant, a face from Miller’s past.” (Roadside Attractions) Click this LINK to visit the official site for ARBITRAGE.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmJSV9ePx7c’]

We’re less than 2 weeks away from our big benefit…and I’ve got some new details for you (if you didn’t read the e-mail I sent out a few weeks ago, you can check it out here). Tickets can now be purchased at our box office and on-line via paypal. WDTN recently did a story about our conversion and benefit…if you didn’t catch it, you can see the video by visiting their site. I also stopped by LIVING DAYTON last week…to see that piece, visit their site. The items for our auction are rolling in. J Todd Anderson of Oakwood – well-known for being the storyboard artist to The Coen Brothers – has donated a hand-signed print of a storyboard from THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Martin Sheen has donated 2, autographed screenplays from THE WEST WING (we even sent the pilot to Allison Janney and had her sign it, too). Local filmmakers Julia Reichert, Steve Bognar and Jim Klein have added an exciting package of award-winning films – A LION IN THE HOUSE, THE LAST TRUCK and GROWING UP FEMALE. I’m supplying a copy of THE RUBI GIRLS documentary (which has yet to be released on DVD) as well as an autographed poster of the Girls. And lastly, THE NEON will auction off naming rights to the small auditorium. Stay tuned to next week’s newsletter for your chance to submit a bid if you’re unable to attend the benefit. Click the AMELIE picture below to visit the benefit website – where you can purchase tickets or make a donation to our campaign.

SLEEPWALK WITH ME – a film that many people have been asking about (due to Ira Glass urging his listeners) – is set to open October 12!

All the best.
I hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

ROBOT AND FRANK Opens Friday at THE NEON

September 4, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Once again, we’re moving forward this weekend…but not quite as we had planned. Though we outperformed all the multiplexes with CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER (Thank you, NEON regulars!!), it opened far wider than we had ever anticipated (a total of 4 screens in town). Because of that, combined with the fact that THE INTOUCHABLES had a fantastic weekend, we have decided
