Dayton Children’s CEO Anounces Retirement

Today Debbie Feldman, President and CEO of Dayton Children’s Hospital made this announcement:

“As I look back over the last 13 years at Dayton Children’s, I could not be prouder of all we have accomplished. Through challenging financial years, an unprecedented pandemic, a pediatric mental health crisis and workforce shortages – all within one of the most competitive children’s hospital markets in the country – we have emerged stronger on every measure and have exceeded every goal we set for ourselves.

Therefore, it is bittersweet to share that I will be retiring, effective June 30, 2026. It was an incredibly difficult decision. I will miss Dayton Children’s and the amazing people who support it. I want you to know how much your support means to me and the hospital. The degree to which this community has rallied around our mission and vision is truly astounding. Your contributions take every project from good to great and allow us to transform care at an accelerated pace.

I also want you to feel secure in the knowledge that the next president and CEO will be selected through a rigorous process to find the very best candidate who will continue the mission and vision that we have worked so hard to build. The Board of Trustees selected the Spencer Stuart executive search firm. It has an excellent reputation and has completed successful nationwide C-suite searches for more than 20 children’s hospitals. We anticipate having a new CEO chosen by late spring 2026.

In the meantime, know that we will not take our foot off the pedal. We will continue the amazing odyssey of the relentless pursuit of optimal health for every child within our reach. We will keep children of our region at the forefront of every decision and continually look for ways to reinvent the path to their health.

It is my honor to serve Dayton Children’s. Thank you for putting your trust and support in me and our team.”

Women’s Board of Dayton Childrens Launch At-Home Virtual Interactive Auction

Get ready – Get set – BID!

The Women’s Board of  Dayton Children’s Hospital online auction is live!  This group of 40 community leaders who support the hospital through outreach, volunteerism and fundraising didn’t exactly plan for their spring fundraiser to be online, but with covid-19, things changed.

Today they have launched their “In This Together, At Home” virtual auction. You can bid on items from the safety of your own home. All winners will be notified when the auction closes at 10pm on May 8. The bonus- all items will be hand delivered within a 30 mile radius or shipped to your front porch, so that you do not have to leave the comfort of your home.

With about 30 auction packages you can bid on, they include

Local Soaper Creates Storybook Line to Support Dayton Children’s Hospital

When a rep from Dayton Children’s Hospital approached entrepreneur Katie Hall about having a coin jar at her 2nd Street Market booth, Katie saw an opportunity to make a much larger impact.

Next month, the founder of Fox in Socks Soapery will release a new line of storybook soaps to support the institution’s work.

The soaps — locally made and sourced, true to Fox in Socks’ mission — will be packaged to look like children’s books. Katie will open up sales Nov. 2 with a faux book launch party at 2nd Street Market that will feature face painting & a scavenger hunt through the market.

Katie will also be accepting children’s book donations during the launch party — and she’ll match every book donated with a bar of storybook soap that will be delivered to a patient at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

“I knew I wouldn’t make an impact with a coin jar,” Katie said, reflecting on her foot traffic. “I said, ‘I want to make you a specific line.’”

The solopreneur made the jump from hobbyist to small business owner about five years ago. She tapped the knowledge she gained studying biotechnology to create her formulas, then she set off visiting Ohio Proud farms to locally source as many of her ingredients as possible.

“I want to build community one bar at a time,” she said. “When you buy a bar of my soap, you’re supporting up to 15 small businesses. My dream for my business is to source enough product that I can impact other small business owners to reach their dreams, too.”

Katie will donate 25 percent of the proceeds from the upcoming storybook line to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

LAUNCH PARTY:

Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 8am – 3 pm

Stop by the 2nd Street Market on Saturday, November 2nd. The party starts in the Market Pavilion with family storybook activities, face painting, an Instagram photo booth and then you’ll be on your way to hunt for sweet treats throughout the market.

Your treasure hunt will end at the shop where you will get the chance to see (and smell!) the new children’s Storybook Soap. 25% of all Storybook Soap sales will go directly to Dayton Children’s Hospital. Still want to give more to Dayton Children’s Hospital…for every children’s book that is donated during the launch party, I will donate a swag bag full of goodies to a child at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Salar’s Reopening Benefits Dayton Children’s

Salar Restaurant and Lounge presented Dayton Children’s Hospital Burn Program with a $3,600 donation. The funds were raised by selling tickets for local eatery’s soft opening and grand opening events in September. Salar, located at 400 E. Fifth St. in Dayton, Ohio, reopened to the public on Oct. 1, just shy of a year after a devastating fire forced the local restaurant to shutter temporarily to rebuild.

The donation will underwrite the cost of burn kits for families in-need that financially cannot afford to purchase the necessary medical supplies to treat injuries.

Salar owner and executive chef Margot Blondet was touched by the support of the community during the time of the fire and felt that it was important to pay that support forward.

“Dayton has showed us the true meaning of community, that when things get tough, we come together to help one another,” says Blondet. “I felt a responsibility to share the kindness of my friends and neighbors to help families that are experiencing hardship.”

Children are especially vulnerable to burn injuries. Children under five years old are 2.4 times as likely as the general population to suffer burn injuries that require emergency medical treatment, according to the American Burn Association. Almost one-quarter of all burn injuries occur in children under the age of 15.

“We are so thankful for the generous donation from Salar Restaurant and Lounge,” says Franki Meier, BS, Donor Engagement Specialist at Dayton Children’s Hospital.  “It’s only through support like this that we can continue to provide the very best care close to home for the more than 350,000 children that need Dayton Children’s every year.”

The Legend of Geek Gala 2018

VR, old-school Nintendo, Blind Bob’s, and enough raffle prizes to make your head spin: it’s a party. Better than that, it’s a gala.

The official Dayton Geek Gala comes to Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District this Saturday at 7 pm “The Legend of Geek Gala” makes its return to Dayton with a Legend of Zelda theme and trust me: you’ll want to be in attendance.

The event is the brainchild of Dayton resident Josher Lumpkin — a neonatal nurse with a passion for community and all things geek. The gala hopes to bring a taste of the convention culture home to Dayton, providing a one-stop hangout for anyone geek enough to enjoy it. The inaugural 2017 effort brought in nearly $3000 for the Extra Life foundation and was such a success Josher was forced to relocate into a larger venue. It’s a party from wall to wall, with games, raffles, and fellow geeks packing in to Blind Bob’s.  

Come for the chance to win some one-of-a-kind Star Wars raffle prizes. Come for the chance to get your hands on the red-hot Nintendo Switch (including some of the latest and greatest games provided by Nintendo rep Ron Martin). Come for the chance to prove that through all these years of PS-whatever’s and Oculus-nonsense, you are still the undisputed king of Double Dragons, or the true master of the SNES. There’s something for everyone.

Be wary: while the drinks, raffle prizes, games are open to all who walk through the door, only the truest of geeks dressed in costume will get the cool $5 discount on the $10 cover charge. Not only that, but a costume contest — with prizes for the winners of course — will be held by Through the Ages Fabrics’ own Scott Bradley, and judged by Susanne Kern from The Human Race Theatre Company, Mary Stephens a competitive cosplayer, and Matthew Smith from Ohio Renaissance Festival.

Whether it’s that dusty Zelda outfit in your closet you’ve been aching to show off since you splurged for it two Halloween’s ago, or the ever-nagging thought of finally making your way to Through the Ages Fabrics to see how good you’d look in a Dr. Who get-up: now is your chance. Geek out, and geek out hard.

Rachel Morris of Hawthorne Hill Photography will be snapping photos of attendees in all their geek glory, so get your camera poses ready.

“It’s just a celebration of whatever you’re into” Josher describes, “and even if you’re not into that… it’s just fun. Who doesn’t like a costume party?” Good question.

As mentioned above, all proceeds will be donated to the Dayton Children’s Hospital through the Extra Life foundation. Partners Absolute and Tito’s vodka will be donating $1 and $3 respectively for every drink ordered.
