Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction Online

December 2, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) has some unique gift ideas for the craft beer enthusiast on your holiday shopping list. The inaugural Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction features dozens of beer-centric experience packages donated by Ohio breweries and other supporters of the state’s brewing industry. Available experiences include canoe and bike trips with brewers, private brewery tours, opportunities to create and brew new beers, and much more.

The Ohio Craft ExBEERiences Auction will be held online from Dec. 3-12, 2020. Many of the donated experiences are designed for individuals or small groups in order to comply with protocols designed to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Several have an outdoor component or can be redeemed at a future date when public health conditions are favorable. Proceeds from the sale of each package benefit OCBA, the non-profit organization formed to promote, protect, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft breweries.

In normal times, OCBA relies on income from popular beer tasting events like Winter Warmer Fest in Cleveland and Six One Pour in Columbus. OCBA uses those funds to advocate for craft beer-friendly legislation at the Ohio statehouse, provide educational resources to member breweries, offer valuable marketing reach through programs like the Ohio On Tap app, and to facilitate collaboration and cooperation among Ohio’s breweries so they can continue to make world class, award-winning beer.

With state and local restrictions on large gatherings still in place to slow the spread of coronavirus, OCBA has been forced to cancel several fundraising events in 2020 and 2021. To generate revenue crucial to furthering the organization’s mission, OCBA has launched several new campaigns this year. Ohio Brew Haul was rolled out in May to encourage craft beer fans to order beer for carry out and delivery from their local breweries. Ohio Pint Day followed in October with more than 110 breweries offering a collectible pint glass with art by Adam Hernandez. OCBA is also offering limited edition sweatshirts in connection with next year’s planned Winter Warmer Cask Day, to be held in place of a large public tasting event.

“Craft beer has always been about more than just the liquid in the glass,” said OCBA executive director Mary MacDonald. “Our members have graciously donated their time and effort to create these unique experiences to connect with craft beer fans. We greatly appreciate the support of our breweries and Ohio beer enthusiasts as we continue to navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic.”

Founded in 2007, the Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit guild that exists to promote, preserve, diversify and unify Ohio’s craft brewing industry. We aspire to be recognized as the industry leader at both state and national levels for preserving the art of making high-quality, unique craft beer; to serve as the unified voice for craft brewers across the state; to advocate on behalf of the Ohio craft beer industry; to contribute to systemic, local community development by driving economic and job growth, while creating experiences that bring people together; and to serve as a beacon for local production and manufacturing through craft beer, resulting in diverse choices for consumers.

City Auctions Items From Two Former Golf Centers

June 23, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The City of Dayton is auctioning surplus materials from two now-closed golf centers, including 100 golf carts, golf course components, landscaping equipment, commercial kitchen equipment and more.
The auction is online at www.govdeals.com/cityofdaytonohio. Bidders can complete a free registration at www.govdeals.com/register.
In May, the City of Dayton announced the permanent closure of Kitty Hawk and Madden Golf Centers. The closures presented the City with a special set of assets–the entire contents of two regional golf complexes.
The surplus features 100 Yamaha golf cars in a variety of ages, conditions and colors. Other golf items offered include granite tee marker holes, golf bag stands, flags, golf cups and more.
Additional golf center surplus includes a 12-ft tall gazebo with its contents (two chairs and a window air conditioner), plus several commercial lawnmowers, landscaping tools, commercial kitchen equipment, bar equipment, picnic tables and park benches.
Several auction clusters will go live, continuing well into July. Bidding is open to anyone with an interest, including businesses, vendors, contractors, restauranteurs, homeowners, and collectors.
“Lots of items are up for auction, from course supplies to memorabilia. Be sure to check back often so you don’t miss a great find,” said Kelly Pressel, City of Dayton Golf Division manager.
Since 2008, Dayton has utilized the online auctions of GovDeals.com to sell City equipment including cars, trucks, and vans, as well as computer and laboratory equipment, and more. GovDeals offers a platform for state and local agencies to sell surplus and seized items.

10 Must Attend Miami Valley April Fundraisers

April 1, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton long ago earned a reputation for being a city that gives back. According to the history of the Dayton Foundation, NCR founder and Chairman John H. Patterson championed innovative projects for the betterment of the community. Joining him in his enthusiasm was his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson, son of John Patterson’s brother, Capt. Robert Patterson, all active community leaders in their own right. A leading businesswoman, Julia Patterson Carnell helped establish the Dayton Art Institute by donating works of art, a mansion that served as the museum’s first home and $2 million towards the construction in 1930 of its current facility.

Robert Patterson was a senior executive at NCR and a leader in community affairs. He helped to found the local Boy Scouts and the Dayton Rotary Club and was active with the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce and Miami Valley Hospital.

Today there are over 4000 nonprofits in the region, and to continue the legacy of taking care of our community, there are hundreds of fundraising events to support them. To see our complete list of charitable events for 2018 check our DMM calendar.

Vue Ultra Lounge Contents Up For Auction

January 29, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

For almost 14 years, this Washington Township bar was the place you went for a good time.  With  plasma screens displaying the latest music videos and sporting events in sync with an awesome sound system, a jammin’ dance floor and aLight Show  that could rival the hottest NYC night clubs the Vue Ultra Lounge was Dayton’s hippest bar.   Not to mention the coolest ladies restroom around- with your own bartender and camera’s to watch what’s happening at the bar when you’ve excused yourself to powder your nose.

The VUE offered a sophisticated atmosphere and the friendliest staff.  Many of us have some great memories of nights spent there, or at least we’ve heard the stories of the fun we had! But all good things come to an end and on New Year’s Eve, the Vue threw it’s final bash.

Now you have a chance to own a piece of Vue Ultra Lounge.

Worley Auctions has posted the catalog of  352 items for sale as a part of the online auction.  So whether you’re nostalgic for one of the plush benches, a martini flight  or one of the many neon’s, you’ve now got the chance to buy one.

You can check it all out online, or preview the items on Tues, Feb. 20th between 4 and 6pm at the club, which is located at 1004 Miamisburg Centerville Rd.   The auction will close on Wed, Feb 21st at 2pm and winning bidders can pick up their items on Thurs, Feb 22nd between 10am and 6pm.

A Family in Art – The Dayton Visual Arts Center 20th Anniversary Auction

April 15, 2014 By Brian Petro 1 Comment

The Dayton Racquet Club view

A view from the top.

The Dayton Racquet Club sits on top of the Kettering Tower, offering an amazing view of the city from any window you choose. Heading into this venerable Dayton establishment is special for any reason. This past Thursday night was no different; people mingling, smiling, and filling the 29th floor of the Kettering Tower with light conversation and laughter. If you did not know better, you would think that this was a family reunion. Everyone knew each other, and any stranger that came up was warmly greeted and introduced to the rest of the group. You would have been hard pressed to find two people in the room that were complete strangers. The only difference on this night is the main focus of the room. The views of all things grand in Dayton fades back as thirteen pieces step into the spotlight.

The thirteen pieces of art ranged from photography to ink drawings, from sculpture to charcoal drawings. This gallery represents just a fraction of the art that has been purchased over the past 20 years through various shows, Artist’s Palates, and auctions sponsored by the Dayton Visual Art Center (DVAC). DVAC is celebrating the 20th anniversary of this yearly tradition. The actual auction this year is on April 25th, but on this past Thursday evening they had a kickoff party leading up to the main event. Being on the top floor in the tallest building in Dayton can almost be seen as a metaphor of how far this institution has come.

DVAC started in 1991 in the Biltmore Hotel, where they were able to set up a small gallery for local artists to share their work with the community. Their goal was a simple one; expose Dayton to the original artistic talent they had in the city and provide a setting for art lovers to meet and discuss their passion. They had a few fundraisers in the early days through various shows, such as their Masquerades where they invited artists to create masks for auction. It was not long before the idea of organizing an auction where artists would donate work and the community at large could come in and bid on it was suggested. The first auction in 1994 was at the Dayton Art Institute. It was organized by artists and members Pam Hauk, Linda Lombard, and Ray Must, and it started a tradition that has helped build this community into a family over the last twenty years.

Just one of the beautiful pieces on loan for the show, Caryatids by Don Williams.

Just one of the beautiful pieces on loan for the show, Caryatids by Don Williams.

Everyone in the room had a story to tell. Each piece of art that silently drew all of the attention in the room belonged to a member. They sat as examples of some of the art that has been auctioned over the lifetime of the events. Eva Buttacavoli, the Executive Director of DVAC and host for the evening, did not just introduce each piece of art in the room, she was able to entice almost every owner to narrate the history of the piece and why they love it. Each piece was impressive, created by names like Andy Snow, Homer Hacker, and Palli Davis. What is equally impressive were the stories told by the collectors about the impact the piece had in their lives. Some did not just collect art from the artists, but were able to develop personal relationships with them. Relationships that led to deeper understanding of the art that was being produced. Some purchased from a variety of artists; some would buy every piece from one artist (if they had room in the house). As one of the collectors told her story, she spoke about how “DVAC becomes a part of your life” and how they “never buy work we don’t love to see every day.” Another woman spoke about how her children, growing up around all this amazing art, were able to not only meet these talented people, but pick out their work on the street. More than a few pieces were bought while the speakers spouse was away. There was a bond among all the people in the room, being either lovers of art, creators of art, or both.

Many of the people attending that night had memories of DVAC that went back to the beginning. Ray Must was there, one of the original three creators of the auction and an artist in his own right. He has been an active member in the Dayton art community for decades as an artist and an educator at Wright State University. His works range from large scale murals in acrylic paint to smaller, more detailed etching. In the opinion of one of the collectors, “what Ray has done for the community cannot be measured.” One of his works, “Edwin Moses and the Dayton Carousel”, will be available at the live auction on April 25th. Bobette ”BK” Olsen was also in attendance, carrying a file that showed some of the history of DVAC’s shows. Names like Connie Hanselman, Ernest Koerlin, Abner Cope and Bobette herself showed up over the years of shows. Sculptor Susan Zurcher, was also there as an early supporter. She chaired the second artist auction, helping to “expose all the hidden gems” within the city. She sees the organization as a microcosm of the city, “helping each other without blowing our own horns.” These three and many more have been involved with this organization over the years, building it slowly but surely. All of the people in the room that night helped build it from the ground floor of a donated space downtown to the top of the town.

The Friday, April 25th show is going to be the 20th Anniversary artist auction. Ten pieces will be on display at the live auction, with over one hundred more pieces being available online for a silent auction. The curators see this event less as a party and more of a family reunion. It is a chance for the art collectors in the community, some who may not have seen each other for years, to speak with old friends and meet new collectors in the community. This event has outgrown the auction’s home of the last few years, the Ponitz Center in Sinclair Community College, and has moved into a new home at The Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center. It is a perfect opportunity for veteran art collectors to see all the newest talent Dayton has to offer, or for new collectors to meet the artists and patron that make Dayton such an original. Ms. Buttacavoli stated it best at the kickoff; this is a celebration “of a generation of artists giving to the community and people supporting art.”

Men For Sale… (for a good cause, of course)

August 16, 2011 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

For those ladies out there that want to give to a good cause AND get a date out of it, the Dayton Racquet Club is the place to be this Friday August 19th as PUSH holds their second annual Men in the City Bachelor Auction event where 17 eligible bachelors will be sold… er, “auctioned” off to the highest bidders.  Oh yeah – your’s truly will be one of those eligible bachelors, and I promise a nice evening out for the woman who bids the highest amount for me!  (Did I just actually write that?)  Well, it is for a good cause so if you need no further info then just buy your auction tickets here; otherwise continue reading AND THEN buy your tickets!

Checking out the goods at the 2010 Bachelor Auction

PUSH (Professionals United for Sexual Health) is a group that formed two and a half years ago to engage the next generation of volunteers and supporters in education, outreach and fundraising efforts for Planned Parenthood.  PUSH raises money specifically for its free condom program (over 80 thousand condoms have been distributed in 23 Ohio counties since its inception) and for a comprehensive health educator position that covers the entire Miami Valley.  Their first Bachelor Auction took place last year and was a great success, and organizers hope that this year will be even better – which should be no problem since your’s truly will be in this year’s auction.  Yes, I just wrote that.

The doors open at 7pm at the Dayton Racquet Club (top floor of the Kettering Tower in Downtown Dayton – best views in town!) and tickets cost only $20 – and only $15 if you purchase your tickets in advance.  Advance ticket purchasers will double their door-prize chances and the first 100 to buy tickets will get a sweet swag bag (settle down, I said SWAG not SHAG) so you’ll want to get those tickets in advance.  Not to mention that last year’s event sold out!

Each man comes with (I can’t believe I just wrote that) a dinner at a local restaurant and “activity” package, with activities ranging from couple’s massages to rock climbing – all donated by generous area businesses.  I’ll assume that a free hotel room is probably not one of the donated activities but who knows.

So who will you ladies be bidding on?  Well here is the list – and yes I will shamelessly start with myself (click on each picture for a whole profile including IQ, Income Bracket and Bicep Measurements).  I’m very sure the auction night will be a blast, much money will be raised… and I’m praying that I go for more than the minimum bid.  So come out and help a good cause – and my ego!  Buy your tickets today!
