Jonathan Larson’s RENT @ C{Space in Downtown Dayton

May 26, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro 32 Comments

Jonathan Larson's RENT at C{Space June 3-5 www.RENTdayton.org

Jonathan Larson's RENT at C{Space June 3-5 www.RENTdayton.org ~ Win Tickets Below!

On June 3rd Encore Theater Company will open it’s summer season of musicals with a show which has become a cornerstone for the musical theater world of the past decade and a half.  ETC will present Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway musical RENT in C{space on three evenings next week, and if you don’t plan ahead, you just might miss out this highly provocative production in a truly unique downtown venue (Saturday is nearly sold out & tickets are selling fast for the other performances).

The musical, which is based loosely on Puccini’s opera La Boheme, follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York’s East Village.  AIDS and both it’s physical and emotional complications pervade these characters as they struggle to find their place in a quickly changing world.

Maureen & Joanne in RENT www.RENTdayton.org

We think of RENT as this iconic “rock opera” legend but what RENT was saying and how it was saying it was revolutionary in 1996 and the theater world has never been the same.  The number of doors RENT opened for new musical theatre writers was unprecedented.  Shows that have followed – like SPRING AWAKENING & 2010’s AMERICAN IDIOT (Yes, the GreenDay one) –  are indebted to Larson & his show for their success.  RENT’s influence is still profound in shows opening today, fourteen years after it quietly opened it’s Off-Broadway run the night after Larson died of an aortic aneurysm.

When talking with cast members of the show, it’s interesting, almost comical actually, to realize that for many of them, their first knowledge of this show was the 2005 film version.  As depressing as that is to this almost-40-year-old, who could’ve been in the original Broadway cast (if he could act & sing that is), it’s also refreshing.  This cast is approaching this material with such an infectious energy!  They are exploring the souls of these characters, but through a new point of view, in a very different world.

Drew Bown as "Roger" in RENT www.RENTdayton.org
“To be able to experience something so beyond myself in sharing with my fellow castmates and it’s viewers, the very real struggle that these characters live through has been life-changing.  This chance to live in love, to spread the message to carry on and be thankful every single day has been a gift.”

Drew Bowen, “Roger”

JJ Parkey as "Mark" in RENT www.RENTdayton.org
“Being a part of RENT is something deeply profound that I’ve strived for in my art and I finally have the chance to play my dream role.  I’ll carry with me the artistic lessons that I’ve learned from this production as I pursue my stage career.”

JJ Parkey, “Mark”

Since ETC carries as its mission the development and preservation of new musical theatre, it seemed only fitting that we honor Jonathon Larson – the pioneer who made our work and our mission possible.  Along with a unique group of collaborators including C}Space, Sinclair Community College Theatre Department, AIDS Resource Center of Ohio, and Project Runway Finalist Althea Harper, ETC invites you to rediscover why you fell in love with RENT all over again and see this generation-defining musical in a fresh innovative production against the backdrop of one of Downtown’s Dayton’s most unique spaces.

Maureen & Joanne in RENT www.RENTdayton.org

Jonathan Larson’s RENT will play June 3, 4 & 5 in downtown Dayton’s C{space at 7:30pm each evening. An additional 11:30pm performance will take place on Friday, June 4th. Tickets for the event are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.  You can order tickets by visiting www.RENTdayton.org

WIN TICKETS to RENT!

It’s easy!  Just COMMENT to this post before midnight Saturday, May 29th to be entered into a drawing to win a set of tickets to the Encore Theater Company production of RENT.  We will be giving away one set of tickets for each 7:30 performance (Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 1 winner per performance)…but you can help DOUBLE the number of tickets we will be giving away!  If 50 readers “SHARE” this post, by clicking the FACEBOOK SHARE BUTTON before midnight Saturday…we’ll give away two sets of tickets for each evening’s performance! Young Professionals in Dayton: Who, What and Why

May 11, 2010 By Megan Cooper 2 Comments

There are so many organizations that encourage involvement in the Dayton region – clubs and associations focused on topics from entertainment to networking to recreation to hobbies to philanthropy to professional development and more.  But there’s a certain niche of organizations that are specifically directed toward “young professionals,” and that’s what I’ll be sharing with you through DaytonMostMetro.com.

First, let’s get the *full disclosure* out of the way.  I’m on the team that put together the updayton “Young Creatives Summit,” so obviously this is something I feel passionately about.  I also volunteer as the co-chair of the Culture Works Associate Board that puts together deals and events to better connect young professionals to the many arts opportunities in the region.  I’ve been to events sponsored by DULYP, DCS, GenD, the Red Cross Associate Board, and more;  I like what’s going on in the region for YPs and I’m looking forward to keeping you in the loop.

Now for this term “young professional.”  Some people I’ve talked with have been turned-off by the stigma of the term “young professional” thinking that it still carries the negative Yuppie stereotype that it did in the 80s & 90s.  Others fear the term neglects those who love their careers and callings, but are not considered 9-to-5 “professionals.”  And people who are unemployed, in temporary positions as they search for their career, or doing amazing work as volunteers, may feel left out by not being “professional”  at all.  If you have better suggestions (remember, I’m part of the group who took a shot with “young creatives”) – leave them in the comments.  The term young professional is what we have, so that’s what you’ll see throughout these articles.  I’m talking to you if you’re in your 20s/30s – regardless of career choice or lifestyle.  And if there are any stipulations about the type of young professional you have to be to participate, I’ll let you know.

There are a lot of ways that people in their 20s and 30s are getting connected, making a difference, and having fun in the region.  And these organizations aren’t necessarily working against each other.  I’ve seen some true partnerhsips developing; just over the past year, a quarterly lunch has been held so that representatives from some of the local YP organizations can gather to coordinate schedules, cross-promote events, and share ideas and resources.  There is collaborration happening where groups are supporting one another and encouraging members to explore different events.  Although our region may appear super-saturated by YP organizations, I think it speaks to the critical mass of YPs in the region that so many unique organizations can exist and remain sustainable.

So, moving forward, I’m going to try and keep you up-to-date on opportunities specifically for young professionals throughout the region. For those who claim, “there’s nothing to do,” it’s because they’re not looking hard enough.  Lots of great YP organizations, events, and people making a difference will be highlighted in the future.   If there’s anything specific you’d like to see on these pages or if you’re interested in a certain topic, leave it in the comments.

Just a few events coming up this week for YPs:

Generation Dayton: May 11 at 5:30 at the Ohio Coffee Co. – Downtown Dayton: Present and Future– A great opportunity to hear about the role of YPs in changes happening downtown, learn about great opportunities to get active this summer through Five Rivers MetroParks, and talk about how DaytonMostMetro.com is working to bring the region together online.

United Way Young Leaders Series: Connecting Career with Community – Marketing yourself in the Dayton region
May 12th from 8:00 – 9:30 am at the Sinclair Ponitz Center

GenD keeps the week moving along with their monthly Thirsty Thursday.  On May 13 it’s at Brio at the Greene starting at 5:30 PM.

Dayton Urban League Young Professionals: check out the YP at Play night at Therapy Cafe on the second Friday of each month (May 14).  They pull out the old school board games, get active with Twister and Musical Chairs, and have an all out great time.

JumpstART:  JumpstART is the activity arm of the Culture Works Associate Board.  You know you’ve wanted to check out Urban Nights (Friday, May 14), but if you don’t know what to expect or where to go – they’ll take the mystery out with a hybrid art hop/pub crawl around the city.

Things To Do In Dayton (10/7 – 10/11)

October 7, 2009 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

Dayton Featured EventsAh yes, October in Dayton – a favorite time of year for many.  Football, jacket-weather, leaves changing color, Halloween… and many things to do, which we conveniently let you know about every week with the DMM Event Calendar…

Starting with Wednesday 10/7 check out Pacchia’s Local Food Week Farmer/Chef special made entirely with locally grown & produced ingredients.  Speaking of local – looking for local music?  Go no further than the Oregon Express for the weekly Buddha Den NTRO/XPO, or for jazz check out the weekly Jazz – Dave Greer Classic Jazz Stompers and spectacular city views at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

Then on Thursday 10/8 do some drinking and networking with Generation Dayton’s Thirsty Thursday at the Engineer’s Club.  Of course, the polar opposite of that young professional’s group is the Dayton Circus and they have their weekly Burrito Jam at Garden Station.  And since this is Local Food Week, go check out the cooking demonstrations and a Benefit Screening of Fresh, The Movie at Second Street Market – this movie may completely change your perspective when it comes to what you eat!

Friday 10/9 starts out with Wright State University’s Social Work Alumni Society First Annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser at Therapy Cafe.  Or if you still have your Z Cavaricci’s and Aqua Net from 20 years ago then bust them out and get down to the 80’s Dance Party at Playhouse South.  Got kids?  Then get them in the Halloween spirit with Young’s Dairy Haunted Wagon Rides!  Don’t got kids?  (or DO have a babysitter?) – then get your pre-Masquerage groove on at Poelking Lanes for Masquerage On The Fringe!  And yes, we have that listed under Participatory Sports – The Dude abides!

So did you think festival season was over? Think again – on Saturday 10/10 in the southern neck of the region in Waynesville we have the Sauerkraut Festival – who knew that Sauerkraut had its own festival? And then of course to the east we have one of the most popular fests of the year – the Yellow Springs Street Fair!  Lots of good food, local art and excellent music will be happening in YS (and while you’re there be sure to get your pumpkins at Young’s Dairy)!  To the north up in Troy we have the Fall Farm Fest and to the west (well, if you live in the ‘creek, anyway) we have the Garlic Fest – which is good timing since we’ll be needing a good defense against those pesky vampires that will appearing in a few weeks!  Finally, if you haven’t checked out the Creative Soul of Dayton Exhibition then do yourself a favor and do it, at the Armory Building in the OD!

Finally to close out the week on Sunday 10/11, you’ll have a chance to hit any of the festivals you missed on Saturday (except YS Street Fair so you better have done that on Saturday!).  If you’d like to sit inside and be entertained then we suggest you check out the ScreenPeace Film Festival showing The Emerald Forest (at the Little Art House in YS or The Neon in Downtown Dayton), or The Miracle Worker – a play at the Dayton Playhouse.  Or finish out Local Food Week and get your hands dirty at Garden Station and learn The Magic of Compost!

These are just some featured events from the DMM Calendar – go over there for even more things happening this week and beyond. And if you have an event you’d like to promote or just want to help us become the number one event calendar in the Dayton Region (we’d like to believe we already are) then be sure to submit your events.

Cheers!

Things To Do In Dayton (9/30 – 10/4)

September 29, 2009 By Dayton Most Metro 2 Comments

Dayton Featured EventsIt is looking like another very busy week in the Dayton Region! Here are some featured events from the DMM Event Calendar…

Starting with Wednesday 9/30 we have The Original Students of Stand-Up – an improv comedy night at the Dayton Dirt Collective (they do more than assault ear-drums with loud-ass music there? Who woulda thunk it?) Of course, if you need a local music fix that night then check out The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO at Oregon Express – a free weekly event featuring two acts every Wednesday night.  And if you want to get involved with an emerging cycle advocacy group then hook up with the same folks that bring us Courteous Mass at Brixx for the first Grassroots Cycling Meet-up.

Then on Thursday 10/1 get ready for city politics with the Updayton Candidates Forum at c{space – will Gary Leitzell and Rhine McLin get into a wrestling match? Will Esrati go full ninja? (which would actually be cool) Come bring your questions to what may be the biggest candidate’s forum of this Dayton election season and get to know who will be leading our city into the next four years – and tell them that we want longer recess and NO MORE HOMEWORK!!! Oh, and if you want your ear-drums assaulted then just head on over to the Dayton Dirt Collective for some Thursday Noise Aktion (whew, we thought they were going comedy club on us!)

Friday 10/2 is going to be another crazy night in Dayton… yes kids, it is First Friday! First up for you emerging artist fans (emerging artists, not emerging fans) we have the Creative Soul of Dayton Reception at the Armory Building in the OD (that cool red brick building on Patterson just south of the tracks) where regional artists will be presenting their art and competing for prizes. If urban bike riding is more your thing then get your wheels out and join the Courteous Mass as we (yes I’ll be there) ride from downtown to Eastwood MetroPark where GearFest will be getting started (more on that below). And just after that there is more urban adventure happening with Dayton’s first Urban Excursion – a local take on the Amazing Race. And finally if you’re down in Centerville and itching for some pre-Masquerage action then check out Pour Haus as they present Masquerage on the Fringe – a crazy time indeed!

On Saturday 10/3 (if you can recover from Friday) get your butt up and your walking shoes out for a cause – the JDRF 5K Walk to Cure Diabetes at Island MetroPark. And speaking of MetroParks – if you are an outdoor adventurer or might like to see what it is all about then you MUST go to the annual GearFest at Eastwood MetroPark (remember these words: Dayton, Ohio – The Outdoor Recreation Capital of the Midwest!)  Oh, and yes it is now October so time for some seasonal fun – first there is that Harvest Party @ Garden Station – if you haven’t seen this amazing transformation of a formerly vacant & overgrown city lot then this is a good time to check it out.  And for some of your first Halloween family fun of the season head out to Young’s Dairy in Yellow Springs for Pumpkin Pick’n & Corn Mazes during the day and Young’s Dairy Haunted Wagon Rides at night. Finally, if local music is your thing then you MUST head to the Oregon District for the annual Dayton Music Fest where you can see 32 bands at 8 clubs for only $10!!!

Finally to close out the week on Sunday 10/4, we suggest you just chill after the crazy week you just had in Dayton by enjoying some peaceful films at the ScreenPeace Film Festival with screenings at The Neon in Downtown Dayton and The Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs.

These are just some featured events from the DMM Calendar – go over there for even more things happening this week and beyond. And if you have an event you’d like to promote or just want to help us become the number one event calendar in the Dayton Region (we’d like to believe we already are) then be sure to submit your events. Especially if you know of things happening on Mondays or Tuesdays for the benefit of our Facebook Fan Michael H. because he works weekends and deserves to have fun too!

Cheers!
