Buch Rant- “Im Pissed”

August 4, 2019 By Guest Contributor

After hearing the horrible news this morning about another mass shooting this time in my hometown, I reached out to my good friend Lisa Grigsby with Dayton Most Metro asking if she was writing about the tragedy. She said ‘yes, but don’t know where to begin.’
Well let me … I’m pissed!
You knew this cancerous, hateful violence was coming here. Just didn’t know where and when.
Now, we have more thoughts and prayers from one side of the political aisle, and the other, get rid of guns.
I’m not here to take a position or make enemies, but rather ask some questions.
Do we really need average citizens armed with military grade weapons, designed to cause as much damage to the opposite side in conflict or war?
Wait, you’re saying, but the 2nd Amendment says … ENOUGH!
That was written a long, long time ago when people used muskets to kill game for food.
I really did think our representatives would do something, anything after young kids were slaughtered at Sandy Hook.
But once again the powerful gun lobbies with massive amounts of cash won the day.
Now Orlando, Parkland, Vegas, El Paso, dozens of others and now Dayton, nothing, zero, absolute zilch has been done.
Oh, except for thoughts and prayers.
What’s wrong with background checks? Prohibiting the sale of assault rifles, more funding for mental illness, hate sights targeted and removed from the web.
Come on already! We can’t just continue business as usual.
Congressman Turner, Senators Portman & Brown, Governor DeWine, elected leaders, this is ALL on you. We elected you to represent us. Now do your jobs. I’m tired of saying ‘enough is enough.’
Mike Turner posted his daughter was down in the Oregon District well, mine was on her way and to Ned Pepper’s, but her friend couldn’t get a baby-sitter and the other friend was too tired. So, she hung at the house.
Thank God.
After closing at her restaurant job, she would have been there by 1am and who knows, maybe in the line of fire.
Unfortunately one of her friend’s cousins was a victim. Gunned down at the age of 25.
25 people.
Just think out on the town to have some fun with friends. That’s the only thing he did wrong.
I would have never forgiven you and don’t know how the families effected ever will.
It’s time, well overdue, for all of us to rise-up and if our reps in D.C. don’t wake-up. then vote them out. Simple as that.
And one final note, the crap our police officers receive on a daily basis must stop. Yes, just like anywhere there are rogue cops, but day in and out they handle a myriad of calls from being a referee in domestic disputes, helping stranded motorists, directing traffic, et al. We see the awful things on-line and not the 100’s of wonderful things they do.
Also, not sure who the officers were who bravely took this ‘threat’ down, but they should receive the highest honors. :30 they neutralized the situation. God speed my friends.

Remember them the next time you bitch about a cop.
In closing, I’m not saying take away your guns. I’m a believer in the 2nd Amendment.
Hand guns for protection is one thing folks. Rapid fire weapons are not.
Is this really enough?
Your thoughts? Please no prayers!

What’s Up With Jim Bucher?

April 3, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro 3 Comments

white-head-300x298Who do you send to interview a local celebrity?  Who will give them the respect they deserve, not be intimidated in their presence and yet push to get the answers to the tough questions everyone wants to know?  Well, how about having them interview themselves? We did and here goes, Dayton Most Metro presents Jim Bucher on Jim Bucher:

BUCH: so how have you been?

BUCH2: good, it was a bit of a surprise to be out of the TV biz after almost 30 years.

BUCH: really?

BUCH2: yes, it’s funny, I’ve seen many people come and go and guess it was my turn.

BUCH: so what have you been up to?

BUCH2: about 6.1! Lol No, really I’ve been reinventing myself. Launched a website buchtvguy.com that sells my unique services.

BUCH: and those services are?

BUCH2: well, TV spokesman, emcee, media consultant for businesses or events. 59407_438250593826_4451764_n

BUCH: sounds cool, but let me ask you Buch.

BUCH2: yes Buch shoot.

BUCH: so what’s changed and what is the most memorable moment or event of your career in broadcast news.

BUCH2: wow great questions.

BUCH: thanks

BUCH2: well, when I started there was cable TV and a few channels but now with satellite and Internet there are so many choices.

I think the biggest change is,  it’s still commercial TV,  so advertisers support it. The pie is the same, but now the pie is cut up in little teeny tiny slices so everything is sold.

Weather brought to you by, sports is sponsored by, etc.

I was waiting for ‘the following knife fight is courtesy of the knife show this weekend!’

623_38864052156_8409_nBut my worry is that everything is sold out.

For instance, way back a certain station’s investigative reporter reported on an alleged Used Car Lemon that was sold to a woman that wanted her money back.

So this certain reporter did his job and tried to get compensation from the local dealer.

Well the stories on problem used cars stopped when the dealer pulled his ads and money.

So what stories aren’t getting told?

Back when TV stations and investigative units went after everyone and everything if there was an injustice. That’s gone for the most part.

BUCH: and what about events you have covered?

BUCH2: wow, been so many. The Wire to Wire Reds run to the World Series in 1990.

The Oklahoma City bombing.

Miamisburg train derailment and the list goes on.

BUCH: a favorite?

BUCH2: without sounding corny…19253_1340834754500_3828162_n

BUCH: you made a career out if corny.

BUCH2: watch it, but I’ve met and interviewed many stars, Tony Randall, Carol Channing. Chris Rock, Phil Collins and tons of comics, but my favorite is talking to the people in my hometown about fairs, festivals, new local businesses or a charitable event to help someone or an organization raise money.

And the opportunity to tell those stories where I grew up and live and all the great local history here.

Stuff I didn’t know about.

One thing about the job that I’m forever grateful for is the opportunity and support channel 2 gave me and the TV platform in which to do it.

BUCH: bravo Buch!

BUCH2: you taking me to Bravo,  cause I’m hungry.buchmonster

BUCH: Buch!

BUCH2: Buch2!

BUCH: always a jokester.

BUCH2: wouldn’t have it any other way.

BUCH: say goodbye Buch.

BUCH2: goodbye Buch, but not so long.

DIY, Riverscape-style

August 8, 2010 By Dayton937 1 Comment

A century ago, Orville and Wilbur Wright looked at their bicycles and said, “I think we might be able to fly these things.”

Today, some hearty fellow Daytonians followed in their footsteps, sort of. They looked at piles of debris and said, “I think I can row this.”

And then they tried.

At Riverscape, in the shadow of the Engineers Club and a statue of the Wright Brothers taking flight, we watched do-it-youselfers take part in Dayton’s Outrageous River Derby. If I heard emcee Commodore Jim Bucher of WDTN Channel 2 correctly, this was the 14th one.

But it was my first, and it turned out to be a beautiful day to hang out by the river for some silly fun. The gist of the event is this: Make a raft, any kind of raft, get it in the river, and race it down the river a hundred yards or so. Try not to sink.

Themes included a Lady Gaga boudoir and an Abe Lincoln who looked suspiciously like a plastic Jesus with an electrical tape beard. A last-minute entry was made of a pipe frame, cardboard, saran wrap and duct tape.

Was there lots of duct tape, you ask?

Did Wilbur wear a funny hat?

The paddle prizes didn’t go only to the swift. The judging panel included an engineer, some student artists from Stivers and K-12 gallery, who gave out prizes in categories like creativity and most-likely-to-sink before the race even started. I can’t tell you who won the superlatives because we’d taken a pause from the sun to get snacks for our boys.

Poor Man's Kayak, the derby winner

But then again, I can tell you who won: Everyone there because it was just goofy fun, a gorgeous blue sky, a soft breeze and a great time at Riverscape.

After we downed our snacks, we sat at the river’s edge and watched the race. Honest Abe got a little dishonest help from someone pushing, and Lady Gaga was surprisingly strong. What I mean by that is that I still have no idea how she stayed afloat.

But they finished second and third. The race went to Poor Man’s Kayak, which turned out to be a fine kayak indeed, held aloft by rows and rows of one-liter soda bottles on its underside and sped along by a very able rower with a great sense of balance.

I’m not sure we’d have made Orville and Wilbur proud, but I have no doubt our hometown ingenuity would’ve made them laugh.
