Flyboys Deli
“Dear valued customers and friends of Flyboy’s:
By Lisa Grigsby
As many may have heard, Steve Crandall, owner of the local restaurant, Flyboys Deli, recently endured a life-altering stroke. His left side of his body is unresponsive and he recently has been moved to a nursing home. His wife Eunice is simultaneously recovering from cancer and a broken leg. Due to these circumstances they have made the decision to close the downtown location, which opened in June of 2021. Their final day at the Patterson Blvd. location will be Thursday, August 31st according to acting manager Nikki.
Their eldest son is running the Oakwood location, which opened in 2013 and assures us that location is going strong and will remain open.

A year ago I would have told you that I don’t even like Reubens or Melts at all. Generally I do not like rye bread. I have never ordered corned-beef on purpose and swiss cheese ranks nearly last on my list of preferred cheeses. However, a year ago, without reason I ordered the Reuben over lunch. It wasn’t bad. Since that day I’ve been searching for Dayton’s best!
During this time I’ve come to love this sandwich and this is where you can find the best of the best.
The Reuben is a melt by definition and a modern deli staple. Having worked in a deli in college I was no stranger to the sandwich but it seemed to be stacked against my preferred taste. The Rye, Russian/Thousand Island dressing, corned beef and kraut all work together, each ingredient made better as part of the whole.
Before I give you my list, let me tell you where not to stop. Stay clear of the chain delis. I have been to both Schlotsky’s and Subway as a point of comparison. There are too many great restaurants in Dayton creating these works of art from scratch to settle for a $4.99 fast food version. Do yourself a favor and hit one of these spots I’ve visited for you.
6) Archer’s Tavern in Kettering and Centerville does it all. I love their wings, my kids love the burgers, but their Reuben deserves some consideration. Nicely sliced corned beef, generous sauerkraut and lots of cheese made theirs a real contender. Their sauce wasn’t anything to write home about, but it was grilled perfectly making the sliced Rye a bit crunchy the way I like. Get the fries. They are double fried, fresh cut, a nice addition to this sandwich. The grilled Reuben and fries are just a bit over $8.00.
5) The most expensive on my list and with the best dressing is Christopher’s in Kettering. Christopher’s is often overlooked on Dayton food lists and their Reuben stands out like the restaurant itself. They start with great Rye bread toasted perfectly, with a homemade dressing and plenty of kraut atop of the sliced corned beef. I asked for extra dressing for my chips and that was no mistake. Go ahead and get the half sandwich. The full size was 3 napkins big and I needed a nap back at work 2 hours later. The half sandwich is plenty and easier on the wallet. The half is $5.95, whole sandwich is $9.95 and stick with chips and extra dressing for dipping.
4) Zinks Meats and Fine Wine in Centerville makes their own Corned Beef and slices it in house. They cook the sliced beef and cheese on the flattop before assembling the sandwich. A thick toasted marble rye held the 1/3 pound of beef and supported the saurekraut well. No complaints. Zinks had the right amount of dressing and the cheese melted a got that nice cheese crust on the edges, giving the sandwich additional texture. The meat didn’t fall apart and came with full flavor and chew. With chips and pickle, you are in for $8.99. Knowing that beef and dressing is made in house, makes it worth the price.
3) The Dublin Pub. The Irish know corned beef and Dub Pub delivers a couple of versions of the Reuben. I stick with the original with extra dressing for my fries. The Dub Pub has more of a shaved slice to their beef which ensures every bite is easy and tender. The Pub offers an Uptown version of their Reuben that adds cole slaw and pastrami to an already hearty sandwich. At 8.99 with fries, this Reuben is a great lunch, grab a Guinness while you are there, call the boss, you’re gonna be late getting back to the office.
2) FlyBoy’s Deli. Contrary to popular belief, the Reuben is not a New York Deli original. Folklore suggests that the Reuben originated in Kansas City. FlyBoy’s doesn’t care about folklore and makes a sandwich tough enough for NYC. The Rye bread holds up after being buttered and crisped in a Panini press. The Corned Beef is tasty and tender like you’d expect from a big city deli. It’s a big sandwich and worth every penny. $7.99 and I would recommend the New York potato salad as a side.
1) DiSalvo’s Deli. Ronnie Disalvo is doing something right. I’ve had the Reuben two ways and both were tops. Order it with Pastrami or Corned Beef. Get there early for lunch, the corned beef goes fast. Secret to their success? It’s the butter and grill press they used to really get a great crust on the bread while melting the swiss to perfection. The corned beef is prepared in house and the Rye is the best in town. Grab the Reuben, a deli side and a Coke and you are out the door for $10.00.
Where am I headed next for a Reuben? Great question. Two stops are in my near future. Tanks on Wayne, famous for breakfast, chili and burgers is rumored to have a Reuben worth writing about. Corner Kitchen has also rolled out a Reuben that has a spicy slaw in place of Kraut and a fried egg. That is moving the Reuben to another level.
You’ve seen my list, now you tell us Dayton, where do you go for the perfect Reuben?
Still feeling it in the pocketbook from all those back to school clothes and supplies? Then listen up, because we have some Food Adventure scoop for you.
We have compiled a list of The Big Ragu’s and Crew’s favorite “Kids Eat Free” places. Gather up the gang, but make sure you know these basic guidelines:
— Generally each “free kid’s meal” is earned with 1 paying adult. So if you are in the Brady Bunch, it looks like only Bobby and Cindy get free grub. Well, unless you bring Alice and Sam the Butcher.
— Also, there are age limits on the “kids” (typically 10 and under). Don’t expect your Senior Prom King son to get a zero cost meal anytime soon. Make him mow some lawns or something.
Without further ado, here are our favorite KIDS EAT FREE spots in the Dayton area.
Whether your kids are angels or brats, it won’t cost you a dime at these Miami Valley eateries:
STEAK THYME: Kids eat free Wednesdays after 5pm at this underrated restaurant in Kettering. May we suggest a cheesesteak? If not, how about a burger or gyro ?
LA PINATA: Niño’s eat free every Sunday at this hot spot in Centerville. Kids love the free chips and salsa. It really doesn’t matter what they order, it will be a delicious combo of corn tortilla, beans, rice and cheese. Great, cheap Mexican food here!
THE SUBMARINE HOUSE: Kids eat free everyday after 4pm at this East Coast style sub shop . We don’t suggest they try the super duper cheesesteak challenge until they are 21. Instead they will want to go with winners like the cheese pita pizza or the chicken tenders and fries.
FRICKER’S: Every frickin day, kids 10 and under eat free. Wings, chicken chunks, boneless wings and burgers are the most popular. Gourmet kids love the Frickin Chicken Pizza.
OINKADOODLEMOO: Tuesdays, kids eat free in the Oakwood restaurant. That is a good deal, because good bbq isn’t cheap.
SKYLINE CHILI: Wednesday nights, kids eat free! Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that this Cincinnati style chili place is an acquired taste. Finicky kids will eat the plain hot dogs all day long !

Steve Crandall and his wife Eunice Kim are giving new life to the restaurant at 2515 Far Hills Ave that closed at Cooper’s Deli back in October. Oakwood Mayor Bill Duncan welcomed the small crowd of community leaders at the official ribbon cutting ceremony, sharing that Oakwood needed Flyboys Deli. Duncan pointed out that downtown Oakwood is really working at helping assist small businesses succeed. He shared with enthusiasm that they’ve added new parking, not only with the public lot across the street, but there are added spots on the side of the building as well as parking behind.
Mr Crandall then acknowledged Dan Apolito and Mike Fullenkamp for getting the deli started, and his banker for helping him to buy the deli from them. He explained that changes he’ll be making will make them more successful then their predecessors. He shared 3 key points that will differentiate Flyboys Deli. First their concept- they’ll be a traditional New York style deli, where you order from the menu, as opposed to the table service Coopers tried. He was also quick to point out that the prices will be about 30% less and the menu much more extensive. They’ll also be open Mon – Sat at 7:30am so you can start your day off with a bagel, breakfast sandwich and Boston Stoker coffee. He then pointed out that as a newcomer to Dayton, he’s realized in his four years here, that Dayton is a city of invention and innovation. He’s been inspired by the history of the town and loves to share those tidbits with former Air Force buddies. Crandall is a retired Colonel and currently works as a VP at SAIC, a firm that specializes in national security, health, energy and cybersecurity.
He points out the “Did You Know” wall in the deli that will highlight many of the region’s inventions. He said “the deli is a work in progress, we have some empty walls on purpose. We want the community to bring us more innovative things to help fill in the blanks on the walls and help us build on the success of Dayton. I never realized how much small business plays into a community’s success and I sure want to be a part of that.” Many of the items on the menu are named after area inventions, like The Starter – a shareable plate of cheeses, pastrami, salami and crackers or the Liberty Reuben- named after the Statue of Liberty as well as the Liberty engine develop
ed right here in Dayton. He then explained that the entire second floor decor will celebrate the region’s aviation heritage.
Crandall then beamed as he mentioned the other key to Flyboys success will be his wife. Eunice’s experience as a restaurateur goes way back. She used to own a Blimpie’s franchise and together they also currently own Akashi Sushi Bar, which may explain the the California roll on the menu. Eunice said that The Flyer Roll, with ham, turkey, cheese, cucumber, carrot, green pepper, avocado, sprouts and lettuce is her favorite. She went on to say that she’s “excited to share her own idea’s and recipes after years of following the franchise rules of Blimpie.” Many of their sandwiches will be served on bread baked for them by neighborhood favorite Ashley’s Pastry Shop. Ms. Kim suggested that the Hot Paninis should be on our must taste list. She also told us to expect some international nights, celebrating her Korean heritage, Sushi nights to bring in their other restaurant, and even Mexican nights, inspired by one of the cooks she hired. She also envisions family fun nights, perhaps showing aviation inspired films on the second floor party room and even puppet shows. You’ll be able to reserve the second floor for private parties (it seats about 35) with a minimum food purchase. Flyboys Deli has 15 employees and hopes that business will demand they hire more.
