Dayton Dinner Theater launches new season on Sunday with “Star Wars”
Dayton Dinner Theater is back! This fun Sunday tradition starts back on November 21, 2021, with the showing of Star Wars (A New Hope) at The Brightside Music & Event Venue from 6-9pm.
“I think it’s the perfect cure for the winter blahs,” says Dayton resident John Boucuvalas and founder of the Dayton Dinner Theater which opens back up on Sunday, after being shut down last year due to Covid. “I think it’s important to have something fun to look forward to when the days are short and the weather is cold and grey.”
The time off has allowed time for exciting new upgrades and partnerships such as having the renowned Dr. Willie Morris and the University of Dayton Jazz Ensemble to feature live music before the movie. They’ve also partnered with local caterer Brock Masterson, to create themed food and drinks specific to each film.
“We were getting some big crowds and momentum when Covid hit, and now we are ready to be back and better than before,” says Boucuvalas. “Partnering with UD and Brock Masterson’s is great and adds a touch of class and familiarity for folks around here.”
With a full Sunday liquor license at The Brightside, the fully stocked bar features our signature $5.00 themed drinks along with a wide variety of mixed drinks, wines, and beer.
During the movie, Dayton Dinner Theatre features their famous interactive quote contest, fun facts, theme spotting, with a trivia contest during intermission. They truly make movies a social and interactive experience.
This year’s lineup mostly features comedies and quotable classics that line up with the interactive nature of the event. Tickets are $35 and must be purchased in advance. More information can be found at www.daytondinnertheater.com. Note: Tickets must be purchased in advance to allow for accurate food preparation.

Bryan’s Favorites for 2020
Confession: I am 8 weeks overdue for an article here at Dayton Most Metro.
I’ve been working on my latest piece in my Quest for the Best series. See past Quests here. I just can’t pull the trigger. Calling a place the best is hard to do. Too much drama from the local foodie scene when you label it the best.
My Quests started a long time ago. 5-6 or 7 years ago I created a Pad Thai crawl. My group ponied up $50 and we ate Pad Thai 5 times in one afternoon. Eat. Rest. Drive. Eat again. Repeat. Started at noon at the Greene and finished at Thai 9 at 5:00. A while later I wrote it up as my quest to find the best Pad Thai in Dayton. I don’t recommend that volume for anyone in a day.
I repeated that same format with a taco crawl, four stops, three hours. I’ve done epic 8 or 10 restaurant crawls in Kansas City in 48 hours. Same in Memphis. Austin. Once did 4 BBQ places in one day here in Southwest Ohio.
In case you are wondering, my favorite BBQ in all of Southwest Ohio is either Just Q’in (Walnut Hills) or Combs BBQ in Middletown. Here in Dayton I like most all, City, Oink, Smokin, Fat Backs, and FlyBy are all legit and doing good stuff with BBQ here. If I didn’t list a local brick and mortar store in Dayton just now, that was on purpose. Either I don’t like it, or it doesn’t count as a BBQ spot for me.
I later wrote about the best Reuben in Dayton. I had Reuben sandwiches at 17 restaurants over an 8 week period. That’s two a week or more for two months. I thought I found the best. I really just found my favorite.
All this to say, in recent weeks and months I have seen the worst in foodies when the subject of “Wheres the Best?” arises in a conversation.
If I have learned anything its that best is subjective. There are no standards for best Pad Thai and when you factor in regional tastes or the chef putting it together its impossible to decide on the standard for best. Same with biscuits and gravy. Or tacos. Tacos people! Tacos are more regional in Mexico than pizza in the US.
What people are asking, when they ask for the best, is this: What is your favorite?
Asking that question takes away the debate. My favorite my not be your favorite. But no matter what the sauces are, or the cut of meat, my favorite is still my favorite.
In third grade, Jennifer Whitley quietly smoked the rest of Mrs. Hopkin’s class in the 50 yard dash. She was not the best runner. She was simply the fastest runner in the class that day. And for many days and years ahead. There’s a difference. Best. Fastest. Favorite. That is also the day I learned I would never be on the track team.
When we say best, we say favorite, and when we say favorite, we often mean personal or nostalgic. I am an unabashed Skyline Chili guy and Cassano’s pizza guy. I love them both. Unashamed. Those two places were a big deal in the small town I grew up in. I have close personal memories of dining with my family at the Lebanon London Bobby’s and later Cassano’s pizza. Up here, closer to Dayton, Marion’s is an institution. For many of the same reasons.
Recently I had the best service and the best complete dinner I’ve had this year. It was at Jay’s Seafood in the Oregon district. I had never been there. My tastes tend more to Abners, Taco trucks and low brow BBQ, not fine dining.
But. Jay’s did not disappoint. If I shared the menu with you, someone would tell me how they got better scallops or white fish or spinach salad somewhere else in town. Maybe the fried oyster was not the best. But it was perfect for me. Delightful crispy fritter with a well cooked tender oyster tucked inside. Having lived in Florida on the coast and in Louisiana near the coast, it was as good as I ever had. If I called it the best, someone would call me out for knowing nothing about fried oysters. If there was a technical error, it was never observed under the lighting of perfect and attentive service, a romantic dining room and gorgeous dinner partner.
I’ve had similar perfect nights at Mamma Disalvos, Treasure Island, Oakwood Club, Pine Club, and Thai 9 has never let me down. Some will comment and disagree with my experience, saying theirs wasn’t the same. Your experience and my experience don’t have to be the same for them both to be true.
So, for my best of list this year I offer this instead, my favorite foods and where to get them:
Italian – Mamma Disalvos
Deli – Zink’s Centerville (Pork tenderloin is ridiculous)
Burger – Disalvo’s Deli (Thursday’s only)
Taco – Garcia Mobil truck (3rd and Huffman)
Pizza – Cassano’s or Old Scratch
Pad Thai – House of Thai (Beavercreek)
Cuban Sandwich – El Meson (best con gris too)
Biscuits and Gravy – Tanks or Mom’s (if you know you know) (Franklin Ohio)
Falafel – Carmen’s Deli
Reuben – FlyBoys Deli
Fried Chicken – Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Gas station, Stroop and Far Hills
Bakery – Big Sky
Chili – Slyder’s Tavern
Wings – Lock 27
Patio – Trolley Stop (I can’t wait to be there again)
Bar – Lily’s
I know what is going to happen. People are gonna see this list. They are going to comment, sure that is good, but have you had…..? The chances are I have. I probably really have tried your spot. So let’s remember. I’m not saying the best. I am saying this is my favorite.
For the record, Zink’s makes a fantastic burger, always cooked perfect. Carmen’s Deli makes a great Reuben. FlyBoy deli has a reuben pizza that will have you rethinking your life. It’s that good. Tank’s burger and those fries. Killer. Thai-9 has my favorite Red Curry and their sushi is top notch. Yummy Burger has great Pad Thai if a burger isn’t your thing. Company 7 has great wings and bbq too. Jimmy’s Ladder 11 has a shrimp po’ boy that reminds me of Baton Rouge. For a burger and beer, its hard to have a better experience than Blind Bob’s and their wings are legit too. Fastest lunch under $10? Falbs.
My favorite calamari ever was at Oakwood Club, my most memorable black and bleu burger came from there too, same night. That night was a celebration. Friends. Drinks. War stories. The food just came and we shared and ate. I remember the people as much as the calamari, cocktails and that burger that arrived just as the kitchen was closing. Are there better burgers? Maybe, but that night, well that can’t be done again. You see, the calamari was just one part. It was the experience as much as the perfect cut, tasty tempura or the accompanying sauce. Favorite. Not best.
So, tell me your favorite, leave a comment and tell me yours!

PorchFest – 40 Mini-Concerts In One Day
Play Music on The Porch Day started out as an idea…“What if for one day everything stopped…and we all just listened to the music?”
Even though this seems like a simple idea, if it worked, it could produce profound results. So in 2013 the organizers of the first “Play on a Porch Day” decided to share this idea with the world and to their surprise the idea spread even faster than they could have ever imagined.
In 2017 thousands of musicians from at least 40 countries and over 400 cities – including Dayton for the first time – participated and the movement continues to grow every day. Musicians from across the globe, regardless of their differences, are finding common ground through music.
This year Dayton again participates in this growing international music phenomenon as the now annual event known as Dayton Porchfest, a free, family friendly event for all ages. The festivities take place in the historic St. Anne’s Hill neighborhood, just east of downtown. There you will find over 40 live Dayton musical acts performing on home owner’s porches. Not only do you get to listen to music all afternoon, you get to experience one of Dayton’s most charming neighborhoods!
This event celebrates Dayton’s rich and diverse music scene, with musicians and bands covering funk and blues to indie rock and jazz, classical and country, to bluegrass and old time muisc that has deep Appalachian roots here. This event also celebrates our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade.
Dayton Porchfest is organized by The Collaboratory, a non-profit incubator for community enterprises and initiatives, located on Courthouse Square. Proceeds from Porchfest go to benefit The Collaboratory. Tips for the musicians are appreciated!
St Anne’s is home to the Fifth Street Brew Pub, who will be open during the festivities. Four food trucks will also be on site, including: McNasty’s, Courtland’s Mobile Grill, Pa’s Pork, Chi-Dogs, and Gary’s Italian Ice. Be sure to scroll below for map and music schedule.
How to Go?
When: Saturday August 25th from 1:30pm – 7pm aka “International Play on the Porch” Day. See schedule below.

Your Mother Lied
Yes, you CAN eat the cookie dough!
We’ve all been there. You’re ready to bake 2 dozen cookies, so you assemble the ingredients. You get to stirring. The dough forms. You take a taste. Then 2. Then 27. You’ve got enough left to make 6 small cookies, are on a sugar high but possibly ready to be sick because you’re full.
Then it happens.
You hear the voice of your mom, grandma, or auntie in the back of your head. “Don’t eat raw dough, you’ll be sick!”
But, you can. You really can!
Cake, Hope & Love to the rescue!
Beginning this week, you can purchase ready to eat cookie dough at the cutest lil cake shop in Beavercreek. CH&L will be offering cookie dough Fridays & Saturdays only in the beginning. If the demand is there, they will happily add more days.
YOU GUYS! ARE YOU READING THIS? YOU CAN BUY COOKIE DOUGH THAT IS MADE FOR EATING!
Ok, so I may have screamed from excitement, but I calmed down enough to ask Shannon what made her put this voodoo in our lives inspired to create this concoction.
I saw the shop Do in New York & I knew this was something Dayton would love! Plus, who doesn’t love cookie dough?! I’m so excited about this new sweet!
Yep, Shannon, we all are. We. All. Are.
Yay for Dayton!
Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to try these new treats. They fit right into our New Year’s Resolution of “doing what we want because we are grown-ups”. It’s pretty great knowing this adorable little bakery is right in our backyard, just changing the culture of crave-worthy treats on a regular basis. No ticket to New York required.

National Coffee Day Tipple: Irish Coffee
We all take coffee for granted as just part of the daily routine. Wake up, brew or buy a cup of coffee, then get to doing something productive with your day. Before it was grown, roasted, boiled, and consumed, first it had to be discovered. The story is that a shepherd in Mocha saw his flock frolicking about after eating berries from a certain shrub. He took the berries, then to make them palatable roasted them then boiled them. He found the drink gave him vast amounts of energy, and the technology spread through the Middle East and Africa. It had to fight various bans for its mind altering effects, as scholars debated on whether or not it counted as being intoxicated when you were hopped up on caffeine. It passed the test with Muslim imams and eventually the Catholic church. According to the story, Pope Clement VIII was charged by his followers with banning the drink of the Muslims. He tasted it before the ban and chose to allow the drink to spread, stating it should be baptized as Catholic to get it from Muslim hands. This is all around 1600.
Coffee has always warmed us up and given a little jolt of energy. It also encourages conversation and the spreading of ideas. From the coffee houses of Shakespeare’s time to Starbucks, people who were looking to connect with others came together under one roof. The chef at an airport bar in Ireland concocted the drink for passengers coming off a plane looking cold and miserable. He offered hem some coffee with a little shot of Irish Whiskey in it. The passengers loved it, and it became a menu item on at the bar in question. One of the travelers that eventually enjoyed the cocktail was Stanton Delaplane, who brought the drink to San Francisco with him and championed it to the city. It was first served at the Buena Vista Cafe in 1952, and embraced by the city. It has been served there, and anywhere else that had coffee and Irish whiskey, ever since.
Irish Coffee
1.5 oz./ 45 mL Irish whiskey
2 tsp. brown sugar
4-6 oz./ 120 – 180 mL hot coffee
Glass: Irish Whiskey
Garnish: Whipped cream
Ice: None
Prepare the glass by warming it with hot water. Empty the glass when warmed, then add the coffee and sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar, then add the Irish whiskey. Stir again. Evenly spread the whipped cream over the top of the coffee and serve.
I love this drink. It is delightful any time, day or night. It is just warm and inviting, the bite and sweetness of the whiskey just peeking through the coffee flavor. You may be tempted to stir the whip cream in, but don’t. The layer of cream on top gives you a little with each sip, and acts as a delicious insulator for the coffee. If you are looking for some caffeine to add to your liquor, I suggest this over vodka and Red Bull any day. And you get whipped cream!
This is day 27 of a series, #100DaysOfCocktails, being done by Smart Guy In A Tie Cocktails. You can follow along daily on my Instagram page on Facebook, and on Twitter.
Lunch from a Gas Station?
Bring All The Cupcakes!
So, the best/worst thing just happened to my life.
First, OMG, Cake Hope & Love DELIVERS NOW!
Second, oh no, Cake Hope & Love delivers now.
Cupcakes on demand!
I have been a very vocal supporter of my favorite little bakery ever since they started in their home kitchen. I ordered a cake a few years ago that needed to be “a little sparkly, with maybe some green, and some zebra stripes” and Shannon whipped up the most fabulous birthday cake that any lil 10-year-old has ever seen. From that day on, my obsession with Cake Hope & Love has been unshakeable.
CH&L owners, Shannon & Mike Teague, have developed quite a large following of fans over the past few years, myself obviously included. It’s always great to see what inventive flavors they’ll have on the Big Red Counter, especially on those #treatyoself days (also known as every day). It’s likely that you may have tried their most popular, THE Buckeye (yes, you have to say the THE in front of it) at an area event. I’m personally partial to Queen Frostine with extra Disco Dust, because some cupcakes just NEED sparkle on them. The flavor combinations they come up with are out of this world.
And now, these little magical cupcakes can just appear at your door step like magic. Like freaking magic, I tell you.
After losing my mind over the slightly subtle Facebook post on a random Wednesday afternoon, I immediately sent Shannon a message that was artfully crafted and extremely eloquent asking her for more information so I could write up a little story on it. Okay, it only said, “WHAAAAAAAAAAAATTT?!?!?!?” and luckily she knew what I meant.
I was able to make real words and I asked what prompted this. “This is a test roll out for delivery. If it is successful we hope to expand to after hours delivery and beyond.” said Teague.
AFTER HOURS!? Can you even imagine how long you’ve been missing the ability to have cupcakes delivered to your door whenever you wanted? I can’t even.
So, maybe you’ve made it this far and think that the names Shannon & Mike Teague sounded familiar but aren’t making the connection to the cupcakes (hey, it’s possible?). You may know them from New Media Dayton or other area workshops where they have taught their play by play success in social media marketing. So naturally, I had to get a little techy with the next question. Okay, it was basically just, “Hoooowwww?!?!?!”. The beauty is that the tech that makes it all possible is the Uber platform. This keeps the delivery charge low for Greene & Montgomery Counties. Shannon said they are “always looking for new ways to expand the business and we’re excited to use an up and coming on demand service.”. Expand the business? More like expanding our waistlines, amIrite?
I’m sure in the next few days someone somewhere will publish a more detailed article, possibly hitting important information that I skipped because I am just too dang happy that Cake Hope & Love cupcakes will now be available without driving out to their shop in Beavercreek.
I am so happy I could cry…and so will my personal trainer.

Say It Ain’t So, Rinaldo !
One of Dayton’s Iconic bakeries is closing September 14th. No more huge elephant ears, half moon cookies, Italian wedding cake, tiramisu, or “adult” birthday cakes. Rinaldo’s Bake Shoppe, located just north of downtown at at 910 Fairview Ave., plans on closing its doors forever in less than 2 weeks.
The Food Adventure is over for Rinaldo and Anna Stolfo, who came to Dayton from Italy and have been making baked goods for 45 years. The bakery has been a staple for local Italian specialties and Kosher items. The closing will come a day after the Dayton Italian Festival weekend aka “Fall Festa,” which depends on Rinaldo’s Bakery for many dessert items. The date of closing also coincides with the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
Rinaldo and Anna’s son, John had taken over most of the operations of the bakery, but John’s health concerns and the work load proved too much for the family to keep bearing. Daytonians will miss this one of a kind bakery.
We at Dayton Most Metro and Food Adventures would like to congratulate the Stolfo family on the success of their life’s work, since opening the bakery in 1970. Every time we visited we were met with a smile, and treated like family. We have enjoyed spending time with the family at the Bella Villa Hall as club members, and appreciate all the specialty cookies they made for us and each specialty cake that made our party a success.

Who was Dougie Apple?
Sometimes a Daytonian’s story bears repeating.
As you know we go on many fantastic Food Adventures. One you can’t miss is about 2 weeks away.
Friday, May 15th is the Big Brews and Blues Festival. This is a blues festival with a cause. The event raises money for the Dayton Diabetes Association.
It is an amazing event, with Blues Bands, dozens and dozens of Beers to sample, and food vendors. The 2015 event is being held at Riverscape Metropark. It is not only a terrific night, but it is a festival with a purpose. Dougie Apple was a Dayton native who also had a purpose.
In fact, at the festival, a banner typically drapes a booth selling beverages for his foundation. This is where the Food Adventures Crew first learned of his story. If you have attended the festival, you may remember seeing the booth yourself.
Sometimes a person who spends a small amount of time on this earth, has a very big effect on those around them.
Such is the case of Dougie Apple, one of 6 kids who grew up in a Miamisburg, with his 5 sisters. He was boy who at the age of 12 found out that he had diabetes. When he was diagnosed it was a surprise, since there was no one else in his family who had this typically genetic disease.
He was active in sports like soccer, and he loved the Cincinnati Reds. After his diagnosis he decided to attend a camp with other kids battling his diabetes. This camp, called “Camp Ko-Man-She,” changed his life. Dougie continued to visit the camp each year, and it helped him cope with the disease. After his diagnosis as he grew up he took a job at King’s Island. He even worked at a local car wash, to feed his interest in cars. He then decided to work at the camp as a counselor, helping mentor other children with the disease.
Dougie’s journey from camp attendee, to counselor and eventually camp director. He affected literally hundreds of lives for the positive, by comforting kids, and making them forget about their illness.
Meanwhile Dougie was dealing with an illness of his own. He received a kidney transplant and pancreas transplant from a donor family who lost a child named Daniel. The Apple family and Daniel’s family became close, and still are to this day. As Dougie continued to have a positive influence on Dayton area kids with diabetes at camp, his illness unfortunately took an unexpected turn for the worse. On February 3rd, 2012 Dougie Apple succumbed to the diabetes, which he fought so hard to conquer.
At his funeral, his family was overwhelmed by the crowd of young people who made the trip to his funeral. They shared stories about how Dougie helped them get through a tough time in their childhood, or helped them get enough courage to give themselves diabetes shots. He had affected so many lives, and the result was staggering. The family wants to keep Dougie’s intentions alive, so they set up The Dougie Apple Tree Fund, and continue to raise money in his name.
Over the past 3 years, the Dougie Apple Tree Fund has raised approx 5 thousand dollars per year. They donate the funds to the Diabetes of Dayton charity. The request is that some of these monies go to send children to the camp that Dougie attended. It is a chance to help these kids to live a normal existence. If you attend the festival, please stop by the Dougie Apple booth and buy a bottled water or a soft drink can, you will be quenching your thirst and helping quench the desires to find a cure for diabetes.
So please, consider attending the

This Saturday the place to be is the Yellow Cab building. Tucked back on fourth street between Garden Station and the Dublin Pub is a community art space that hosts all kinds of events, most notably the Food Truck Rallies, art shows, concerts, movie showings and even farmers markets.
This weekend the Night Market is happening. Night Market is a night time farmers market with craft beer, food trucks and entertainment. This is a fun way to fill your table full of local goods, drink some craft locally brewed beer, grub on some of the best food trucks around and listen to some tunes from DJ Etch. All ages are welcome for this party atmosphere market.
With spring time here our farmers will be selling their veggies. Brickel Creek will be bringing her organic goodness. Flying Mouse will have maple syrup. Homefull will be bringing items from their 150 raised beds.

Also featured are vanilla extracts, jams and jellies, spice blends, granola, cookies, and cinnamon rolls from Baker’s Vegetable Market & Greenhouse. Baker’s will also have hand pies, sprouts, lettuce and baby vegetable plants, so you can get your own garden started.

The Greatest Donuts in the World + **Win a Dozen of Them !**
Every glazed must kneel, every jelly must bow…. Dayton, Ohio is home to many things, including the World’s Best Donuts since 1960. Bill’s Donut Shop is no doubt a Miami Valley icon, located at 268 N. Main Street in Centerville. They have won countless local awards, and have been featured nationally in Saveur Magazine, USA Today, and even recently on the Ellen Degeneres Show. We think it is not a big step to proclaim these the “World’s Greatest Donuts.” If you don’t believe it, let the Food Adventures Crew edify you.
***** Want to win a dozen of the WORLD’S GREATEST DONUTS? ***** All you have to do is comment on the story below and one winner will be chosen at random next week (one comment per person please).
Local celebs like ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, WHIO’s Mike Hartsock and University of Dayton legend, Don Donaher have named Bill’s as their favorite. Even national talk show host Phil Donahue, Congressman Mike Turner and singer Chet Atkins have given the donut shop accolades. We have also found many Daytonians who have moved away, always take time to stop at Bill’s Donuts and get their fix. Many who come in form out of town introduce their spouses or kids to the donuts, so the next generation can worship the legend. The shop has a cult following of regulars, some sit at the coffee bar, others in booths, One notable patron Kevin, who is also called “Dewey” is a friendly man who has been a fixture there since the 80’s.
This place is popular… like grass roots popular. Even without the celeb endorsements. For example, this Saturday Bill’s Donut Shop is hosting the annual Superhero 5k run for A Special Wish Foundation. The 5k had room for 500 runners and it sold out a week in advance. We think the 5k’s “donut after party” had something to do with the sellout.
So, with all the press, popularity and endorsements, why is Food Adventures writing an article on Bill’s Donut Shop? The answer is simple, we dig deeper. We dig into not only which individual donuts are the best of the best, but we ask “WHY?” What is the secret that makes these the most delectable donuts on earth?
HERE’S THE SKINNY:
— Original owners Bill and Faye Elam opened Bill’s Donuts in 1960. In 1995, they sold the business to two of their children, Lisa and Jim Elam.
— One of the biggest attractions is that the donut shop is open 24 hours a day, except for certain holidays.
— The best donuts in the world run about 80 to 85 cents each. There are 2 different types of donuts the yeast ones (glazed) and the cake donuts, but in recent years they have added some delicious danish, creme horns, muffins and more. All of them live up to the delicious standards of Bill’s, especially the huge chocolate brownies with chocolate icing.
— Also known for their coffee, typically Boston Stoker, they also offer milk, juices and hot chocolates and a mini cappuccino bar.
— The booths are old and tight, the coffee bar seating is definitely a throwback style. Warning – you may find long lines on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but the lines go fast. It is worth it for the magic inside the display cases. Another thing.. we call it one of our “fat kid tricks.” If you have the donuts a day or two later, pop them in the microwave for about 15 seconds. It makes them taste brand new again.
— Bill’s Donut Shop is also a huge supporter of local causes. They donate to dozens of charities and have been sponsoring local sports teams for many decades. They have a strong family belief in giving back to the community, which is deeply ingrained in their corporate philosophy.
— The Secret to the “Best Donuts in the World”, according to owner Lisa Elam is in 3 parts:
1) Bill’s uses only the purest, top quality oil to fry their donuts.
2) Top quality sugar and flour go into the donut recipes. Only the best ingredients have been used since 1960.
3) Cooking expertise from decades of experience. There is something to be said for experience and knowledge of workers who have been employed for 20 years or more. They know their craft, they know their industry and have developed a skill and a style. Most of the workers are truly seasoned veterans and expert donut makers overseeing the operation, not someone who has been working there a few months.
We now explore the ultimates in donut world.. which ones are the best? Which ones are the MUST EATS… The Food Adventures Crew has done their homework on this one. The King, Hungry Jax, Chef House and The Big Ragu have literally eaten dozens and dozens of these donuts over the years. Probably enough to fill up Vin Diesel’s car trunk. So here is the result of our years of research….
MUST EATS:
—THE PRETZEL DONUT: A huge pretzel shaped, glazed monster you have to twist to pull apart. Some parts of the donut are gooey and fresh, while other parts have the cooked glazed crust. This is the Big Ragu’s favorite donut of all time. It is a melt in your mouth delight.
—THE CHOCOLATE ICED ROUNDS WITH CREME FILLING: A simple round donut, iced with chocolate icing and injected with light cream.
Hungry Jax points to these as her favorites. The creme texture mixed with the icing and one of a kind Bill’s Donut flavor will put you on Dream Street.
—THE PEANUT BUTTER FILLED LONGJOHNS WITH CHOCOLATE ICING: Chef House’s favorite donut from Bill’s is one of their most sought after. This large rectangle pastry is iced with chocolate and stuffed with peanut butter creme. It’s one of those treats you bight into and say with a full mouth, “are you kidding me?”
—THE BUTTERY TWISTS: Are resident sweets expert, The King, will tell you that this is the best choice in Bill’s display case. A big donut that is buttery glazed and big on taste. Melt in your mouth delicious.
— THE CHOCOLATE GLAZED: WARNING! A glass of milk must be within 3 feet of you when eating these. These devilsfood cake donuts are the cats meow. We could eat a dozen of these ourselves.
— THE PERSIAN WITH NUTS: Huge cinnamon buns with peanut butter icing and crushed peanuts on top. Rich, filling and sinful, what a great way to start a morning.
— THE SOUR CREAM DONUT: It tastes nothing like it sounds. this is an old fashioned style, almost crunchy donut made with a bit of sour cream. The result is the inside is a lightly fluffy, vanilla flavor. The outside is a nice crunchy brown coating with a glaze.
— APPLE CRISP MUFFINS: How did they fit an apple pie into a muffin? This is the dark horse of the whole place and a rare sight. So grab ’em when you can. Thank us later, it will bring tears to your eyes.
Honorable Mention: The Blueberry Donuts are amazing. Also, you cant go wrong with a Jelly Donut with Vanilla Icing or a Powdered Donut filled with Cream. They also have a few donuts that are Custard Filled. The Big Ragu says the custard filled donuts will knock your socks off. There are so many others like the Apple Fritters and the Crullers, which when you say it sounds like you are gurgling salt water. Even the “Doughnut Stix” kick butt.
Again we say, every donut hole must kneel, every Long John must bow. Sprinkles or not, you have now experienced the upper echelon of the breakfast / dessert world. You have experienced the pinnacle of pudding in a glazed bun. You are lucky to live in Dayton, Ohio.. for you have experienced Bill’s Donut’s… The Greatest Donuts in the World.
