Taras has finally slowed down and embraced farm life comfortably enough to send his son, Andrei, to a Polish school. In the time frame the Ukrainians are trying to free themselves and their land from the Polish. Once Andrei gets to the new school, he falls romantically in love with the daughter of a Polish man. From here, drama ensues, as the two struggle with their newfound love, family honor, and their national identities. The stars of the feature are Tony Curtis, Yul Brynner, and Sam Wanamaker.

A love  story that takes place in the 1970’s, Barfi! finds three popular Indian film stars learning about love and that love does not always find itself within “normal” societal boundaries. Barfi, a boy that has both hearing and speech impairments falls in love with Shruti, who ignores her feelings for him instead to pursue a “normal” lifestyle. Many years go by and Shruti and Barfi’s lives intersect again, but this time Barfi is seeking his love Jhilmil, who has gone missing. From this point weaves a love triangle that teaches life lessons.

Obama America and Fatboy Slim at Rave Cinemas + TICKET CONTEST

August 20, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Hello Dayton! Back to  school has started and the summer blockbusters are starting to slow down.  However, there are still plenty of special events to come see at Rave Cinemas. Now, on with the  show…

Opening 08/24 at  Dayton South, 2016 Obama’s America,  this film takes audiences on  a gripping visual journey into the heart of the world’s most powerful office to reveal the struggle of whether one man’s past will redefine America over the  next four years. The film examines the question, ‘If Obama wins a second term,  where will we be in 2016?’

Across the globe and in America, people in 2008 hungered for a leader who would unite and lift us from economic turmoil and war. True to American ideals, they invested their hope in a new kind of president, Barack Obama. What they didn’t know is that Obama is a man with a past, and in powerful ways that past defines him–who he is, how he thinks, and where he intends to take America and the world. Immersed in exotic locales across four continents, best-selling author Dinesh D’Souza races against time to find answers to Obamas past and reveal where America will be in 2016. During this journey he discovers how Hope and Change became radically misunderstood, and identifies new flashpoints for hot wars in mankind’s greatest struggle. The journey moves quickly over the arc of the old colonial empires, into Americas empire of liberty, and we see the unfolding realignment of nations and the shape of the global future. Emotionally engaging, 2016 Obamas America will make you confounded and cheer as you discover the mysteries and answers to your greatest aspirations and worst fears.

Love him or hate him, you don’t know him.

Eco-Rehabarama 2012

June 23, 2012 By Teri Lussier 1 Comment

If you missed the Eco-Rehabarama in Huber Heights, never fear. I took some great pictures of the homes and want to share them to inspire the Midcentury Modest home owners among us. These homes were a joint effort between CountyCorp’s The Housing Source, and the Home Builders Association of Dayton (HBA) and showcase not only the possibilities for Dayton’s older housing stock but also the creative minds of the builders who were involved in this tour.

Note: The Housing Source continues to renovate and sell homes throughout some of the first-tier suburbs of Dayton and their website is the best source for information about the Neighborhood Stabilization Program and homes that are for sale at any given time. In addition, The Housing Source allows local Realtors the opportunity to host open houses at some of their homes, so check their facebook page for updates.

Huber Heights to host Rehabarama 2012

March 5, 2012 By Teri Lussier 5 Comments

Okay, so officially it’s “Eco-Rehabarama”, not just “Rehabarama”, but the concept is the same: Older homes that have been rehabilitated, are open to the public. Rehabaramas and Citiramas have been in Dayton since 1993, when the very first Rehabarama was held in McPherson Town Historic District. What a treat it was to see those historic homes restored and updated. The whole neighborhood was energized, which was an added benefit. It’s true that once one neighbor starts to fix up their home, there is often a ripple effect throughout the neighborhood. It’s not so much keeping-up-with-the-Jones, but more seeing possibilities that we couldn’t see before. Enter Eco-Rehabarama.

For the first time in Rehabarama history, the tour will be held in a neighborhood outside the Dayton city limits. This year Eco-Rehabarama is in Huber Heights. Yes, that’s right, the brick ranch finally gets to strut its stuff. Before you roll your eyes, consider why this style home was chosen. From Home Builders Association of Dayton (HBA) Executive Director, Walt Hibner: “All those years ago, we gave Charles Huber grief. But he had something there that we couldn’t appreciate until 50 years later.”

The Huber brick ranch is a size and scale of home that lends itself to affordable rehabbing. The ranch home means no stairs, and the brick exterior is a low maintenance construction material, these are important issues for today’s home buyer. But as Hibner says, “These are not your father’s Huber Homes.” With renewed interest in Mid-Century Modern style, these classic, but affordable MCM homes fit that bill. Eco-Rehabarama is a builder’s showcase. Seven residential construction professional members of the HBA of Dayton took over the 10 homes that are on this tour. Eco-Rehabarama is a builder’s showcase. Each home was stripped to bare studs and the builders created a unique theme for each home. The focus is on energy efficient upgrades, hence Eco-Rehabarama, but floor plans have been altered, sometimes dramatically, and the upgrades are visually stunning. On this tour, Hibner says, visitors “will be able to see and touch the HGTV finishes.”

Themes for the homes run from “Breathe Easy” an “Allergy Friendly” home, to “Young. Hip. Fresh!” with a modern interior that is a little more edgy, to “Home for Life” with renovated space with an eye for ease of movement, convenient for someone in a wheelchair.

The Eco-Rehabarama Home Builders Association of Dayton, in partnership with CountyCorp’s The Housing Source is presenting Eco-Rehabarama, held in May- dates and times can be found here, and in up-coming posts, I’ll take you inside the homes, discuss what CountyCorp and The Housing Source are and what they do, and talk to the builders about what it takes to rehab a home, and how they created their unique themes.  All homes will be for sale through CountyCorp’s The Housing Source Signature Homes, for occupancy at the conclusion of the show. Meanwhile, if you are looking for inspiration and a sneak peek, take a look at the descriptions for the ten homes, here.

Granny C’s Bakery: A Family Affair

September 30, 2010 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Walking into a bakery can be an exercise in dietary discipline.

The very nature of a bakery is one of indulgence, with rows of sweet treats on display – seemingly begging to become one with all who walk through the shop doors.

Now keep in mind, when I say bakery, I mean a real bakery.

Not Wal-Mart.

Not Meijer.

A real bake shop.

Granny C’s Bakery in Huber Heights on Old Troy Pike is that genuine bake shop – where you’re greeted by the smell of sugar and warm dough fresh from the oven, the sight of crisp confections that were rolled, twisted and shaped by hand, and the sound of controlled chaos emanating from the back room as trays of cookies slide onto metal racks, mixers hum and whir in the background and bodies move vigorously to prepare the day’s delights.

Streaks of flour and frosting form abstract patterns across the aprons of bakers as these artisans create edible expressions early in the morn.

The true success of Granny C’s, however, isn’t in the frosting or fruit filling – it’s in family.

“My retirement was gonna go from my pocket to these four kids anyway,” jokes Rebecca McDaniel, owner of Granny C’s. “I may as well make ’em work and learn how to make a living.” Two of those ‘kids’ are daughters Tina Fiore and Sarah Taubert, co-owners of Granny C’s Bakery. Their husbands bake and help out as well. Travis McDaniels, Rebecca’s husband of 41 years, rounds out the nucleus of the bakery.

From left to right: Tina Fiore, Travis McDaniel, Rebecca McDaniel, and Sarah and Ben Taubert.

A true family affair.

Rebecca’s pastry experience began back in 1969, when she was employed at Dixie Donuts as a donut maker before being promoted to shift supervisor. “I was the first woman supervisor at Dixie,” recalls McDaniel. “I worked there about a year doing donuts. I never thought I’d use it again!”

After the stint with Dixie Donuts, Rebecca stepped away to have a family and operate an in-home daycare. “My kids never got store bought cookies or anything else,” she says. “I always liked to bake and I made them home-cooked meals. They loved it, and I got to stay at home with my kids.”

When the kids got older, Rebecca worked as a real estate agent before handling accounting duties for Southern Ohio Kitchens for ten years. When the opportunity presented itself, her baking and small business backgrounds gave her the experience she needed to open up shop in Huber Heights.

She flung open her doors on February 1 and hasn’t looked back since.

“I don’t care if I get one penny back from my investment,” she says. “If we get to be profitable and these kids can make a living…I’ll be happy.”

Who is Granny C.?

Kathryn Cope, "Granny C."

“Granny C. was my grandmother,” says Rebecca McDaniel. “She was a very nice lady. I loved my grandmother very much. She was a very special person. She was my only grandparent since I was one year old and she was always there for me. She was a very active, wonderful woman.

“Granny had a girl scout troop…she was with girl scouts her whole life. In the 1930’s, she drove her girl scouts to the West Coast. To this day the girls [from that troop] get together and meet every Christmas. She was very active in church, and very active in the Harrison Township community. Grandmother was just a special person.”

Everything at Granny C’s is original. The icing, cream filling, flavorings and glazes are all from scratch. “Nothing comes from a bucket,” says McDaniel. The store’s variety of fresh baked breads are all original recipes.

“We’re always looking for recipes.”

And she means it. Customers have brought in their family recipes for the bakery to make for special occasions. The only extra charge is the cost of the ingredients. They also take special orders on pies. “We do a killer pecan pie,” boasts McDaniel.

Sarah Taubert, head cake decorator, appreciates the freedom she has from working within the family environment. She’s responsible for about ninety percent of the wedding, birthday, graduation and specialty cakes that leave the bakery. “I worked at Sam’s Club for a while and couldn’t really be creative.  People walk in here and say, ‘this is what I like, this is the color I like…go for it!’

“You never know who’s going to walk through the door,” she adds.

But if you think Granny C’s is just about sweets, you’re mistaken. They have a robust catering menu from Maple Bacon Cocktail weenies, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon and smothered in brown sugar, to Southwestern Roll Ups, a zesty tortilla treat.

And if you’re on the road in the early morning driving either to or from work, the shop has an added convenience for you: a drive-through service that allows you to pick up the “Red-Eye Special”, a cup of coffee and two donuts for $2.00, without leaving your vehicle (from 6-8 a.m.).

With the commitment to quality and community, Granny C’s Bakery is poised to be around for a long time.
