Joui Wine: A New Wine Bar with Small Bites and Retail

December 16, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Visited Dayton’s newest wine bar, Joui (pronounced Joy) Wine yesterday for a liquid lunch with a friend.  Located in the Fire Blocks on Third street, it makes an impression the minute you enter. My guest declared she loved it from first look.

Owner Lauren Gay, the former general manager of Sueno, wanted to put her sommelier talents to work, curating a downtown wine bar and retail spot, something she feels has been missing since The Wine Gallery closed. When describing her new place she shares that “the atmosphere is first and foremost fun. Wine is often times pretentious and stuffy, and it doesn’t have to be. I want the space to reflect the kind of explorative, relaxed approach that I take to wine. The space is bright, and will be full of light colors, flowing shapes, plants, and art. I want it to be a comfortable place for people to bring their laptop and work, grab a light snack, or have a pre-dinner drink. I want it to be a place of comfort and pleasure.”

We were there to take advantage of their liquid lunch and started with the Airmail and the Spiced Apple Bellini.

Then to decide on a snack:

We decided to share the cheese plate:

Along the back end are racks of wine to purchase and their kitchen area.

Overall for our first visit we liked it.  We dropped about $40 on 2 drinks and our snack, pre-tip. The service was very attentive and we have no doubt others will find joy here.

4 Course Wine Dinner at Sueño

September 30, 2021 By Dayton937

Sommelier Lauren Gay

On Sunday, October 3rd, join Sueño for a 4 course dinner expertly paired by Sommelier Lauren Gay with 5 wines from Mi Terruño. Traveling over 5,000 miles from Argentina to Ohio, Mi Terruño’s owner Gabriel Baigorria will be leading the event.

The Baigorria family has been involved in Mendoza’s wine industry since 1960; first with the purchase of their own vineyards and later, in 2004, with their own winery. Located in the picturesque town of San Roque, Maipu, the winery was retrofitted from an old glass tile factory – combining new technology with traditional wine making techniques. Mi Terruño, meaning “my terroir”, is managed by the brother-sister duo of Gabriel Baigorria and winemaker, Maria Eugenia Baigorria. Under Maria Eugenia’s guidance the Mi Terruño wines are driven by the unique expression of their own terroir and embodies their most important treasure, the grapes.

The Baigorria family

Chef Jorge Guzman and Chef Rico Thompson are excited to offer the following meal, inspired by and specially crafted to pair with Gabriel’s wines:

‘Expresión’ Cabernet Franc and Mayacaba Malbec with borrego (herb roasted lamb shoulder, frijoles blancos, hoja santa chimichurri)

Dessert:

Welcome is from 4pm to 4:30. Chef Rico and Gabriel will speak from 4:30 to 5:00. Dinner will last from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Tickets are $119 per person and can be reserved online.  Bottles will be available for purchase after the event. Limited seats available.

April 14, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

So what do you do when your brand new night club is open for just three days before the Governor’s Order shuts you down?  You pivot and become a pop-up bodega, for your booze and necessities for your neighbors. And that’s how Tender Mercy turned in to Mercy Mart. Selling beer, wine, loaves of bread, eggs, potatoes, rice  toilet paper, vinyl gloves, Tender Mercy merchandise and more.  They’ve added cheese from St Anne’s, Focaccia by Grist and soon they’ll be adding more goodies from some of the 2nd Street Market.

But that wasn’t enough for Lauren Gay, their Sommelier. This Dayton native left town to explore the world in 2010, did a stint in the Peace Core, spent some time in LA and Vegas and then she and her boyfriend, Brandon Fugate (now the Beverage Manager at Tender Mercy) came back to Dayton to work with The Idea Collective and open Tender Mercy.  She wants to use her wine knowledge, industry connections and help the Miami Valley use this Pandemic required slow down to explore new wines and become more educated about the industry. So yesterday they launched:

In what Tender Mercy hopes to become a weekly feature Lauren will host a weekly video featuring tasting tips, explores wine varietals and pairing recommendations.  You can actually see the video on their Instagram site. She’s hoping you’ll submit questions she can answer in future episodes and wants to help you enhance your wine experiences.  Lauren is available to consult with you on wine purchases, finding out what you like, what you’d tried and make suggestions on things she thinks you should try. You can purchase from the Tender Mercy menu, do a special order of at least 6 bottles, and if you buy a case you’ll enjoy a 10% discount.
