New Comedy HYSTERIA Opens Friday!

June 12, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

We had to change our plans for this Friday. Though I know many of you are anxious to see THE INTOUCHABLES, The Weinstein Company changed their plans and decided not to open the film in Dayton this weekend. We will eventually play the film, but an alternate date has not been determined.
Instead, we will open a new comedy with a great cast. It’s an English period piece set in the late 19th century…about the invention of the vibrator. Though HYSTERIA sounds like it could be tawdry material, it’s actually one of the most delightful comedies I’ve seen in quite some time.
If you still need to see THE KID WITH A BIKE, you’ll need to hurry down. This incredible film will only play through Thursday. THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL will stick around for another week.
Visit www.neonmovies.com for remaining showtimes for this week.

Synopsis for HYSTERIA: “Hysteria, a mischievously inspired romantic comedy set in the late 19th century, is based on the surprising truth of how Mortimer Granville came up with the world’s first electromechanical vibrator in the name of medical science. The film stars Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy, alongside Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones.” (Sony Classics) This charming comedy is more sweet than naughty, and our NEON regulars should love this summer treat. Check out the fun website at this LINK!

On June 28 at 7:30, The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and The Miami Valley Pride Partnership will present a screening of the new documentary VITO. This wonderful new film is about the life of Vito Russo – author, film lover, leader and activist. In addition to being educational and enlightening, I found the movie to be utterly inspiring. I’m anxious to see it again. Tickets, just $8 each, are available at our box office. (Below is an image of Vito Russo and Bette Midler…her appearance in the film is quite special!) As an added note, VITO is the opening night film of The Frameline Film Festival this month in San Francisco. It is also the opening night film of Outfest in L.A. next month. THE NEON, in little ole’ Dayton, Ohio, will have this film right between San Francisco and Los Angeles…that’s pretty wonderful!

“Allow yourself to be immersed in a world where perception is redefined by a mysterious drug called I Razor. Dr. Gregory Fleer, a once brilliant scientist and the creator of I Razor, is transformed by his own experiment, along with a portion of the male population, into a band of telekinetic freaks who must negotiate their way through a world twisted beyond all recognition by their altered perceptions… Circus Devils (Robert Pollard of GUIDED BY VOICES and Todd Tobias) present: I RAZOR a New Film directed by Todd Tobias, starring Steve Five, Cory Race, and Brad Visker – with music by Circus Devils. Saturday July 14th at 12:30pm. Tickets are $5 and are first come first serve and open to the public. Buying a ticket will enter you into a raffle to win cool I Razor/Circus Devils stuff (I Razor Movie T Shirts, posters) before the movie, and I Razor tickets for this event will be specially made and collectable.” (taken from press release)

And don’t forget that your movie ticket gets you 15% off your food order at Sa-Bai…located directly behind THE NEON.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Bob MARLEY Documentary Opens Friday!

May 16, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Over the past several weeks, numerous people have asked if we were going to play MARLEY – the new documentary about the brilliant musician Bob Marley. On Friday, it will finally arrive.
If you still need to see JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME, Thursday will be your last chance to see it at THE NEON. DAMSELS IN DISTRESS and FOOTNOTE will stick around for another week. Remaining showtimes for this week can be found at our website – www.neonmovies.com.

And speaking of customer requests…we’ve had more calls and questions about THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL than any other film in recent memory. Fear not! It opens Friday, May 25.

Synopsis for MARLEY: “Bob Marley’s universal appeal, impact on music history and role as a social and political prophet is both unique and unparalleled. Marley is the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend, from his early days to his rise to international superstardom. Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.” Join us for our OPENING NIGHT PATIO PARTY. Before Friday’s 7:15 screening, live acoustic music will be presented on our patio by M Hunter of Columbus (performance begins at 6PM)!

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSvXlZlm6Zg’]

On Wednesday, May 23 at 6:30pm, United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 75 has rented out our space for a special screening of INSIDE JOB – “the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008″…and they’re inviting you to join them. “UFCW 75 represents nearly 30,000 members along the I-75 corridor in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky; our members work mostly in supermarkets, drug stores, food packing and food processing plants, and in health care facilities. We are Ohio’s largest private sector union. For questions, more information, or to RSVP, email info@ufcw75.org.” (details provided by UFCW 75)

PARIAH Starts Friday at THE NEON (One Week Only)!

April 4, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Though neither SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN nor IN DARKNESS were big hits for us, they both performed well enough to stick around for one more week. (Interestingly, both films have received rave reviews from our NEON regulars.) On Friday, we’re going to add one new title into the mix – a film about a young African American woman coming-of-age in Brooklyn. PARIAH has received perfect reviews from numerous critics, and Meryl Streep even acknowledged lead actress Adepero Oduye during her acceptance speech at this year’s Golden Globes (this was big news for Oduye – as she was the only name mentioned by Streep who wasn’t nominated for the award).

Synopsis for PARIAH: “Adepero Oduye portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents Audrey and Arthur and younger sister Sharonda in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is a good student at her local high school. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the sometimes boisterous support of her best friend, out lesbian Laura, Alike is especially eager to find a girlfriend. At home, her parents’ marriage is strained and there is further tension in the household whenever Alike’s development becomes a topic of discussion. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague’s daughter, Bina, Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.” (taken from Focus Features)

On Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30, we have a special treat for lovers of documentaries and vintage aircraft. “Each year the famous Doolittle Tokyo Raiders from WWII have a reunion to remember their mission, their comrades, and their heroic leader Gen. James Doolittle. In 2010, an extraordinary event took place – seventeen B-25 bomber crews volunteered to gather in honor of the Raiders, and over 70,000 people turned up to witness it. THE RESTORERS – THEY WERE ALL VOLUNTEERS follows the journey of a Minnesota B-25 named Miss Mitchell. Join this restored bomber as she travels to Dayton, Ohio to attend the largest B-25 gathering since WWII. Help us commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic Doolittle mission. The filmmakers and participants will be on-hand for discussion and questions. Cost: $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for children and veterans.” (synopsis provided by Adam White)

“In celebration of National Record Store Day, GHETTOBLASTER MAGAZINE will be hosting a special screening of EMPIRE RECORDS on Saturday, April 21 at 10:15pm. In addition to the movie we’ll be giving away two tickets for this year’s Nelsonville Music Festival and all proceeds will go toward 2012’s Dayton Music Fest. Other events that day include music trivia at Blind Bob’s from 4-6pm, live music throughout the day at Omega Music, Record Gallery and Feathers in the Oregon District and Toxic Beauty in Yellow Springs (Omega and Toxic will also be selling special RSD releases) and many local businesses will be offering discounts with a shown receipt from one of our local record stores.” (taken from press notes) Tickets for this event will be just $6 each (and only $4 each if you have a receipt from one of the local, indie record stores). Tickets will only be available on the night of the screening.

Do you want to win a trip to Paris? THE NEON has been happy to take part in selling raffle tickets for an upcoming benefit for AIDS Resource Center Ohio. Raffle tickets are $25 each or 6 for $100…and we still have a handful left. The drawing will take place on Saturday, April 28, and we will keep selling this tickets for another week.

For those of you who use Facebook, we finally have an actual page…not just a “group” page. We will soon be fazing out the old group, so please LIKE us by clicking this LINK.

We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

THE NEON Gets To PAGE ONE

August 10, 2011 By Jonathan McNeal 3 Comments

Hello Everyone.

We’ve had a great summer so far…and you certainly helped to keep the ball rollin’ with BUCK.  Our weekend was fantastic, and positive word-of-mouth should keep this film going for a little while.  In addition to BUCK, we’re going to bring you another documentary which also has some great buzz – PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES.  In addition, we’re going to keep MIDNIGHT IN PARIS for yet another week.  Crowds keep coming to this little gem, and it’s quickly becoming one of our longest running and highest grossing summer films.

If you haven’t had a chance to see BEGINNERS, Thursday will be your last chance.  For showtimes for this week and next, visit www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for PAGE ONE:  “In the tradition of great fly-on-the-wall documentaries, Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times deftly gains unprecedented access to The New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk. With the Internet surpassing print as our main news source and newspapers all over the country going bankrupt, PAGE ONE chronicles the transformation of the media industry at its time of greatest turmoil. Writers like Brian Stelter, Tim Arango and the salty but brilliant David Carr track print journalism’s metamorphosis even as their own paper struggles to stay vital and solvent. Meanwhile, their editors and publishers grapple with existential challenges from players like WikiLeaks, new platforms ranging from Twitter to tablet computers, and readers’ expectations that news online should be free. But rigorous journalism is thriving. PAGE ONE gives us an up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for on-the-record quotes, and skillful page-one pitching that produce the “daily miracle” of a great news organization. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of journalists continuing to produce extraordinary work-under increasingly difficult circumstances.” (Magnolia Picutures)

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwTMFXgf95c’]

Click HERE to visit PAGE ONE’s Official site.  Click HERE to visit BUCK’s Official site.

In the next few days, I will release the entire line-up for The 6th Annual Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival.  The selection committee sorted through over a hundred hours of material in order to bring the best films to Dayton.  For a sneak peek, check out a trailer for our opening night film – THE GREEN – sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa.

Hope to see you soon.

Take care!

JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORKS – Opening at THE NEON!

September 21, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

I’m posting this update from Toronto…where I’m seeing three films a day (sometimes more) and sighting plenty of stars along the way.  Perhaps you’ve been keeping up with my blog, too.  Each day is posted separately, so just click on the day you’d like to read.

We are now playing JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORK.  Hopefully you’ve seen the fantastic trailer and have been waiting for this film (the trailer is below).  I saw it a few weeks ago and fell in love.  That said, you should hurry down to see it.  With the way we’re backed up right now, it might not stick around too long.  In addition to JOAN, we’ll hold both GET LOW and GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE for another week.

Synopsis for JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORK: “Joan Rivers- A Piece of Work exposes the private dramas of comedian and pop icon Joan Rivers as she fights tooth and nail to keep her American dream alive. A unique look inside America’s obsession with fame and celebrity – Joan’s story is both an outrageously funny journey and a brutally honest look at the ruthless entertainment industry, the trappings of success and the ultimate vulnerability of the first queen of comedy. With unprecedented, unguarded access, the film takes the audience on a year long ride with Joan Rivers in her 76th year of life; it peels away the mask of an iconic comedian, laying bare both the struggle and thrill of living life as a groundbreaking female performer.” (taken from fandango)

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is almost here, and festival passes are now on sale – just $40 for all six screenings and the opening night party!  (Single tickets are on sale, too – just $8.00 each.)  Check out the official website for images and trailers at www.daytonlgbt.com.  As of right now, we have 4 artists planning to attend the festival.  Casper Andreas – director of VIOLET TENDENCIES (Saturday, Sept. 25 at 9:30), Sarah Louise Lilley – star & producer of NOTHING HAPPENED and Jessica Provenz – writer and producer of NOTHING HAPPENED (Saturday, Sept. 25 at 3:00), and Heath Daniels – writer, star and producer of GO-GO REJECT (also on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 3:00) will attend the fest.  These guest artists will be flying in from NYC and LA…and I hope they’ll have a warm reception with an enthusiastic crowd at each screening – please help to make it happen.

Here’s more great news.  On Oct. 1, we will begin a one-week run of THE ELEPHANT IN THE LIVING ROOM – shot partially in Oakwood.  This film just won Michael Moore’s film festival in Traverse City.  “The Elephant in the Living Roomis an award winning documentary film about the controversial world of raising the deadliest and most exotic animals on earth as common household pets.  The story follows the journey of two men at the heart of the issue.  One, Tim Harrison, an Ohio police officer whose mission is to protect exotic animals and the public, and the other, Terry Brumfield, a big-hearted man who struggles to keep two pet African lions that he loves like his own family.  This critically acclaimed film has won multiple BEST DOCUMENTARY awards including one by Academy Award winning director Michael Moore who describes it as ‘One of the scariest, most entertaining and technically perfect films.'”  For more information on the film, visit the official website at www.theELEPHANTintheLIVINGROOM.com.

Living City Film Fest is at it again!  This year, the festival will be a celebration of the career of Jeff Bridges.  Titles include
THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and THE BIG LEBOWSKI (each on 35mm)…there will be 5 films in all…and a full line-up of titles, sponsors and dates (October/November) will be announced next week.

I’ll be back at THE NEON on Saturday, and I hope to see you this weekend for
JOAN RIVERS.

Take care,
Jonathan

Two Big Hits at The Neon AND LGBT Film Festival Preview

August 12, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal 9 Comments

Hello Everyone!

It’s rare to have 2 films performing well. It’s even more rare for 2 films to perform well during the summer months (arthouse attendance traditionally does better in the winter months – read “award season”).  That said, we have 2 films that are breaking summer records for THE NEON. If you haven’t seen WINTER’S BONE or THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, you need to make it down to THE NEON. We are going to hold both films for another week.

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is swinging into action for its 5th year! Mark your calendars for September 24-26. In the coming days, all details will be available on the official website. For now, you can view trailers of the opening, centerpiece and closing films – each has been winning awards at festivals around the world:

I KILLED MY MOTHER (Sept. 24) – CLICK HERE

A MARINE STORY (Sept. 25) – CLICK HERE

UNDERTOW (Sept. 26) – CLICK HERE

And Living City is at it again! This year, the festival will be a celebration of the career of Jeff Bridges. Titles include THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and THE BIG LEBOWSKI (each on 35mm)…a full line-up and dates (October/November) will be announced soon.

And now for FREE TICKET information.
Your odds are good to win. Only 3 people have posted reviews!!
If you see a movie at THE NEON, you can now comment on the film for everyone in town to see…right here on DaytonMostMetro.com.
During the month of August, write a review for a film that’s currently playing at THE NEON – by commenting on my posts.
At the end of the month, we’ll select two winners to win a pair of tickets to THE NEON. If the response is good, we’ll do it again in September. (You can only review a specific film one time…but if we have 5 films play in one month, you could possibly have 5 entries.) Good luck & Happy Reviewing! (Drop me a note if you have any questions.)

We hope to see you soon.
Take care,
Jonathan

Free Ticket Contest & THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT @ THE NEON!!

August 2, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal 4 Comments

Hello Everyone.

The booking fairy has granted us a wish!  THE NEON currently has Dayton’s exclusive booking of THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT…and that’s great for you, because THE NEON has Dayton’s best first-run ticket prices (not to mention a great selection of microbrews and imported beers).  We hope you’ll make plans to come out and support this film that is winning audiences & critics over across the country.

Synopsis for THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT: “The Kids Are All Right is the heartfelt new comedy from acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko, starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo. Two teenaged children (Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska and Journey to the Center of the Earth’s Josh Hutcherson) get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re-defined, and re-re-defined. The New York Times raves that it’s ‘a generous, nearly note-perfect portrait of a modern family,’ and Entertainment Weekly calls the movie ‘funny, smart and sexy!’” (taken from movieweb.com)  Click on the image below to be directed to the official site.

We had to move WINTER’S BONE back a week, so we’re going to hold CYRUS for another week and hold onto MICMACS for one screening a day for one more week.  Both of these films will leave next Thursday to make room for WINTER’S BONE on August 6th.  Hurry down if you still need to see either of these films.

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is swinging into action for its 5th year!  Mark your calendars for September 24-26.  The opening night film will be I KILLED MY MOTHER(an absolutely incredible film that has won awards and garnered high praise from numerous film festivals…from Cannes to Toronto to Frameline) – and you absolutely can’t miss it on the big screen.  In next week’s update, I’ll announce the entire line-up.  If you know someone who would like to sponsor the festival (either through a business or personally), please get in touch with me right away.

And Now – FREE TICKET Information. We want you to review our films!  Come to THE NEON and see our current films…then post your review on DaytonMostMetro.com under THE NEON’s weekly update.  At the end of August, we’ll collect all the names of people who have reviewed films – and we’ll draw 2 winners for a free pass (good for 2 admissions).  Each film review counts as an entry (though you can only review a film one time).  Please join in and help create some energy for THE NEON.  (If this goes over well, we’ll do it next month, too.)

We hope to see you in the coming week.
Take care,
Jonathan

MICMACS is Fantastic – But Only Through Thursday at THE NEON

July 25, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

AMELIE was a huge hit for us…and audiences adored it. If you were a fan, don’t miss MICMACS – now playing – but only through Thursday.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet is the briliant mind behind the truly charming MICMACS…and he’s also responsible for AMELIE, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, and DELICATESSEN.

Some friends of mine couldn’t decided which film to see this weekend, so I highly recommended MICMACS…and they were delighted.  They loved the film!

Synopsis for MICMACS: “First, it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain… Bazil (Dany Boon) doesn’t have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden and instant death.
Released from the hospital, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, our inspired and gentle-natured dreamer is adopted by a motley crew of secondhand dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba’s cave, whose talents and aspirations are as surprising as they are diverse…One day, walking by two huge buildings, Bazil recognizes the logos of the weapons manufacturers that caused his hardship. With the help of his faithful gang of wacky friends he sets out to get revenge. A gang of underdogs battling heartless industrial giants, they relive the battle of David and Goliath, with all the imagination and fantasy of Buster Keaton.” (taken from movieweb.com)

CYRUS performed well last weekend. Though a bit more serious in tone than anticipated, audiences are liking it.

I’m delighted to announce that the Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival is swinging into action for its 5th year! Mark your calendars for September 24-26. The opening night film will be I KILLED MY MOTHER (an absolutely incredible film that has won awards and garnered high praise from numerous film festivals…from Cannes to Toronto to Frameline) – and you absolutely can’t miss it on the big screen. The full line-up will be available soon. If you know someone who would like to sponsor the festival (either through a business or personally), please get in touch with me right away.

Don’t forget THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. We’d love to have opening weekend be a huge success. It opens Friday, July 30. Please spread the word!!

Take care & see you soon,
Jonathan

Final Days for I AM LOVE – MICMACS Opens Friday!

July 19, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

We’ve got to keep moving!

If you still need to see I AM LOVE, you shouldn’t miss it on the big screen.  Don’t wait for the dvd!  You only have through Thursday to see it at THE NEON.  Visit THE NEON for this week’s showtimes.

On Friday, we open MICMACS – the new charming & wonderful film from the brilliant mind of Jean-Pierre Jeunet…director of AMELIE, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN and A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT.  MICMACS will more than likely only play for 1 week, so make plans now for seeing it this weekend.

Click on the poster to find out more about the film (or watch the trailer below).

My full update – including a contest where you write the reviews of our films – will come later in the week.

We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

CYRUS – Opens Exclusively at THE NEON on Friday!

July 15, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal 1 Comment

Hello Everyone.

We begin our run of a movie on Friday that audiences have been swarming to see all over the country…and I’m excited that we’re getting the exclusive opening of the film in Dayton. CYRUS – a film by the Duplass Brothers – stars John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and Catherine Keener.

Synopsis for CYRUS: “Directed by mumblecore stalwarts Jay and Mark Duplass, Cyrus stars John C. Reilly as John, a middle-aged lonely divorced guy who, as the film opens, gets dragged to a party by his remarried ex-wife (Catherine Keener) — who remains his best friend. After a few clumsy, drunken passes at a variety of women, John encounters Molly (Marisa Tomei), an attractive single-mom who finds John’s social awkwardness appealing. They hit it off, and quickly begin a tender new relationship. Problems soon arise in the form of Cyrus (Jonah Hill), Molly’s twentysomething son, who has an off-puttingly close relationship to his mom. Soon the jealous Cyrus sets about trying to break them up, and John must figure out how to deal with this unhinged and unexpected rival.” (Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide)

If you still need to see HARRY BROWN or THE SQUARE, today is the last day (Thursday) to see them at THE NEON.

We’ll hold I AM LOVE – which has received interesting response from our regulars. Though some have had a luke-warm reaction to the film, others are swooning – with repeated viewings and complete admiration for everything about the film. Personally, I’m of the latter camp.
Madeline Breslin wrote me a note describing the film as “…breathtaking. Exquisite! Perfect! Searing!” and Chase Whiteside thinks “…it is brilliant.” Stuart McDowell thinks the film is “very powerful,” and I must agree!
Don’t forget about our cross-promotion with Coco’s Bistro. Plan on seeing the film the same day you have lunch/dinner at Coco’s Bistro – www.228coco.com – and you’ll save! (Click on their link to read more about the promotion.)

Our line-up is getting quite crowded over the coming weeks…so things may come and go quickly and opening dates may move around. Thanks for staying up-to-date with my weekly newsletter.

We hope to see you very soon!
Jonathan
