Shot Heard Round the World 19 April 1775

Wright Memorial Public Library in partnership with the Oakwood Historical Society will host local historian Andrew Lloyd as he presents “Shot Heard Round the World 19 April 1775.” Lloyd’s talk is part of the Far Hills Speaker Series and addresses the local impact and local heroes of the American Revolution as part of the America250 celebration.

Guests can attend in person at Wright Library or virtually by registering at wrightlibrary.org/calendar.

Following the program, all are invited to an America250 tree planting at the neighboring Oakwood Historical Society’s Long-Romspert Homestead, 1947 Far Hills Avenue, Oakwood, Ohio.

About the Program

Their families originated from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and more. They fought in the American Revolution – a cause that took them from New England to Virginia, the Southern Campaign of General Greene and the battlefields that brought forth the United States of America. Veterans of Valley Forge, Brandywine, and Yorktown lie at rest in Montgomery County, Ohio – a county named after General Montgomery of the Continental Army and adjacent to Greene County, after another Continental General, Nathaniel Greene.

This talk looks at those veterans of the American Revolution, their links to Montgomery County, Oakwood, and Centerville, and their roles in the war that changed the Continent. It aims to put some context into the incredible sacrifices and achievements of those individuals and bring to the fore anecdotes on their road to Ohio.

Join us for fabulous jazz from the Greg Abate Quartet as they take the stage at Whisperz Speakeasy on Wednesday, February 11th. Greg Abate is a jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer, and recording artist who tours internationally and spends 2 months in the UK playing clubs and festivals. Greg is proud to have been selected as the second-place winner of Favorite Alto Saxophonist on the Downbeat Magazine Readers Poll in 2022 and has been in the top 10 for 3 years now. At the beginning of his career, Greg played lead alto saxophone in the Ray Charles Orchestra. They’ll play from 7-10 pm with a fabulous set of eclectic, elegant jazz alongside our Whisperz Whiskey Wednesdays, when standard whiskey, bourbon, and scotch pours and cocktails are 25% off all evening long!

Joui Wine Goes Underground with “Gin & Sin” Speakeasy Pop-Up

Dayton, it’s time to step back into the shadows.

Joui Wine is turning down the lights and turning up the heat for its first-ever Gin & Sin: A Speakeasy Pop-Up, a late-night Prohibition-era party designed for those who prefer their cocktails strong and their secrets stronger.

Beginning at 10:00 PM, this isn’t your standard walk-through-the-front-door affair. Entry details will be shared the day of the event, and yes — a password will be required. Consider it part of the fun. Discretion is strongly encouraged.

Once inside, guests will find themselves immersed in a moody, jazz-soaked atmosphere where the spirit of the 1920s comes roaring back to life.

Expect:
• Prohibition-era cocktail specials crafted for the occasion
• Sultry performances by Gem City Burlesque
• Live jazz from Ayn Swann and The High Standards
• A dance floor ready for the Charleston, Fox Trot, Shimmy — and maybe even a modern-day Twerk

This isn’t just a party. It’s participatory theatre with a splash of bootleg bravado.

Guests are encouraged to lean all the way in on the aesthetic: flapper fringe, Gatsby glamour, vintage sparkle, pinstripes, suspenders, gangster chic, or full bootlegger elegance. The crowd becomes part of the spectacle, and the more dramatic the entrance, the better.

With intimate lighting, clandestine vibes, and a soundtrack built for late-night revelry, Gin & Sin promises a stylish escape from the ordinary.

Kettering Restaurant Starts Carry Out Orders Before Opening Next Month

Rum Runners Cafe is now doing a soft opening- for online orders with a LIMITED menu. Carry out is available or you can order through Doordash! The available menu offers burgers, chicken sandwiches and loaded baked potatoes.  When the restaurant opens they’ll add pastas, salads and salmon dishes. View the available menu here, items will be added throughout the month as they feel their kitchen can handle it.

Located in the former Christopher’s space on E Dorothy Lane, the owners signed a 5 year lease this past December and have done a lot of remodeling themselves  in the 3,500 square foot restaurant.

It will have seating  for 75 guests, with a decor that’s described as prohibition-era art deco, with black and gold colors and geometric patterns reminiscent of the glam associated with the Jazz Age. There is a separate bar area that will have eight taps for draft beer and the cocktail program will feature rum based drinks, as well as gin, since it was a popular spirit in the 1920s. Furthering the 1920s theme will be some of the menu items, which will be named after gangsters, flappers, Irish mafia members and female rum runners of the period.

While the restaurant has rum in its name, guests won’t be able to order a cocktail with their meal, at least not at first. The eatery plans to get its alcohol licensing in the fall, at which time it will serve alcohol in addition to food.

Owner Jamie Campbell said it’s been she and her partners dream to open a restaurant for about a decade and they’re excited to make it a reality.  They share a love of rum and  have a rum-based BBQ sauce line that is currently sold locally at Dorothy Lane Market and Dots Market.  The sauce offerings include honey rum, sweet rum and spicy rum as well as a forthcoming rum and Coke sauce as well as a glaze in the same flavor. All the sauces will be available to add as side for any order as well as a sauce option for the restaurant’s chicken wings.

They expect to open the restaurant for in house dining in mid to late June.
