Stillwrights Lives!

June 15, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

In May of 2021 Fairborn, Ohio-based Flat Rock Spirits, LLC, owner of the Stillwrights brand, announced the closure of its production facility and tasting room after eleven years of operation. Following that announcement Cincinnati Distilling Company and Flat Rock Spirits came to terms on a deal for Cincinnati Distilling to acquire the Stillwrights brand and intellectual property in order to resume production of the Stillwrights premium bourbons, rums and moonshines. Cincinnati Distilling has hired James Bagford, the co-owner and head distiller of Flat Rock Spirits to ensure continuity on the processes, recipes and finished products of the Stillwrights brand.

“Over the years we had the pleasure of working with the Flat Rock crew at various events and always enjoyed their outstanding line up. We loved working with their team and their Stillwrights products have always been top notch” said Josh Engel, Cincinnati Distilling representative. “We’re so excited to be able to keep Stillwrights in the market and couldn’t be happier to have James on our team. He will add tremendous knowledge and experience to the operation.”

James Bagford

“I’ve always had a great relationship with the Cincinnati Distilling team and had a blast every time I’ve worked with them in the past.  When I was contacted about continuing that relationship, it was a no brainer for me.” James Bagford added. “ I’m really excited about joining the Cincinnati Distilling team and looking forward to continuing the Stillwrights brand as well as getting to work on all of their other fantastic products.”

Production of the Stillwrights products will be consolidated into the Cincinnati Distilling facilities and there is no plan to reopen the distillery and tasting room in Fairborn. The additional capacity needed will ultimately be fulfilled in the state of the art production distillery being built in Milford, Ohio which is scheduled to open later this year. The Milford location will be home to Cincinnati Whiskeys and Bourbons, Voltage Vodka, Cooper Island Rums, Red Sky Gins, Rebellion Agave and now, the entire Stillwrights portfolio.

“Cincinnati Distilling company has not only the capacity to continue to produce Stillwrights products, more importantly they have the same focused passion that Shawn, James and I have always had, to create high quality spirits for our customers. I know James is excited to get back to distilling and bottling.  Stillwrights will be back on the shelves very soon and that is a great feeling.” Brad Measel, co-founder and co-owner of Stillwrights said. The shape of the bottles will change, as the original supplier no longer makes those bottles.
The full line of Stillwrights products can be found at your favorite local Ohio liquor agency. The Cincinnati Distilling team plans to immediately resume and ramp up production to expand Stillwrights availability throughout the state.

Local Bars Support Pride All Month Long

June 6, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

June is PRDIE month a celebration to recognize the sweeping impact that LGBT individuals, advocates and allies have on history in the United States and around the globe, according to the Library of Congress.

The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969. The Stonewall riots were a “tipping point” for the gay liberation movement in the United States. The uproar also paved the way for the modern fight for LGBT rights.  Dayton Pride is this weekend with a Friday’s Affair at the Square from 6-10pm featuring 3 bands and The Rubi Girls. Saturday starts with a reverse parade down Second Street from 10-11am and food, drink, vendor booths and live entertainment at Courthouse Square from noon-4pm.

Many Dayton area bars are joining together to show their pride, by offering drinks specials that will donate a portion of sales to the Greater Dayton LGBT Center for the entire month of June.

Crystal Head Vodka is proud to be an ongoing supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. and is the official Vodka sponsor of Dayton Pride. They’ve just released a  limited-edition Pride bottle. The 2021 Pride bottle release contains our original vodka, distilled 4 times from the highest quality, locally-sourced Canadian corn. Silky smooth with a hint of sweetness and vanilla. Filtered through Herkimer diamonds and blended with pristine Newfoundland water. This pure spirit is completely free from additives and made with pride.  As they explain it, “Colour plays a vital role in the world we live in, often used as a powerful communication tool and form of creative expression. Colour evokes feeling and has a direct link to creative thinking. Crystal Head Vodka is proud to bring creative spirits to life in celebration of diversity and equality with our newest limited-edition release. We are committed to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and related communities through our continuous involvement with LGBTQ+ foundations, charities and organizations.”

Billy Cavallo, the East Coast Brand Ambassador for Crystal Head, will be in Dayton this weekend to celebrate PRIDE, and visiting many of the bars supporting the LGBT Center promotion. The following bar have all committed to show their Pride:

Chaffee’s Brewhouse

June 4, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

Lisa Smith Richards and her husband, Shawn, are busy people! They opened Chaffee’s Brewhouse in Tipp City last year during the COVID epidemic, and they run their own farm. At their Hop Farm at Lock Sixteen, they grow their own hops for use in the Chaffee’s beers and for other customers like Mother Stewart’s brewery in Springfield. Shawn also owns a company that builds draft beer delivery systems for bars and restaurants.

Located just steps from the Great Miami River Recreation Trail, you can find Chaffee’s Brewhouse at 15 S. Second Street in downtown Tipp City. They love to welcome cyclists. “We have a group of about ten cyclists who come in at least twice a month after their Friday ride on the bike trail. Both my husband and I are runners and cyclists and we want to highlight that proximity as a way to grow our business” says Lisa

Named after Sidney Chaffee, who ran a distillery in the 1870’s in the same location where the brewhouse now resides. According to Dayton beer historian Tim Gaffney, Chaffee was an infamous Miami Valley businessman was once charged by the federal government with evading taxes after moving 200,000 gallons of spirits down the nearby Ohio Erie Canal without paying taxes.

According to Lisa, Shawn worked in the brewery industry in North Carolina, and they decided downtown Tipp City was the perfect place for a locally-owned brewery. “We felt like downtown Tipp City needed a brewpub, and we hope it also helps the economic momentum for other businesses as well,” she said. “We started construction in February of last year and then in March everything shut down. But we decided to just keep going, keep moving forward.”

They built the place themselves. Chaffee’s bar was built with wood sourced directly from Shawn’s local family farm. And given Shawn’s knowledge of draft beer systems, he designed and built the tap system that can handle 18 different beers.

As more people get vaccinated, and life begins to turn toward normal, Lisa says they’ve been able to welcome visitors safely back to the brewery. “We don’t want to be one of those places that packs hordes of people in. We want people to enjoy our beer, wine, and cocktails and be able to talk to each other”.

Tipp City, with the support of the Downtown Tipp City Partnership, recently instituted a DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) that includes Chaffee’s. “The DORA is working really well for us and other businesses. It’s a great way for local businesses in Tipp City to draw customers,” Lisa said.

The Great Miami Riverway Brew Trail includes 13 locally-owned craft breweries from Sidney to Hamilton, and Chaffee’s is a great addition to this trail. Congratulations to Lisa and Shawn on the opening of this great new asset to Tipp City.

So Pizza Now Open Across From Dayton Mall

May 28, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Simla Oscan is a college student majoring in business administration and gets some real life experience in running a business with her family’s new eatery, So Pizza. Originally from Turkey, the family lived in Italy for a while where Simla remembers her grandfather running restaurants, which is what sparked her dream to own a restaurant.  The family moved to Ohio about when she was in junior high for her father’s granite business. Which worked out well for furnishing the tables for the eatery.

When we asked about the name, Simla just smiled and said it was her initials. On the day we visited she was working the counter and her mom was doing the the cooking.  Opened just last week in the strip center across from the Dayton Mall on  Rt. 725 is open seven days a week from 10am -10pm during the week, staying open til 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

And while the name tells you it’s a pizza place, the menu is so much more. Offering spaghetti, lasagna, and fettuccini alfredo, salads, burgers, subs, calzones and even fried chicken.  You can enjoy your food in the spacious dining room with table and booth seating surrounded by artwork of cartoons enjoying food, get carryout or have their food delivered.

Pictured here the chicken bacon ranch pizza and the deluxe pizza,  which like all their pizzas comes in 10, 12, 14 or 16 inch sizes.

They offer a lunch special Monday – Friday from noon until 2pm that is a 3 topping small pizza, fries and a 20 oz drink for $9.99.  The also offer a Family Meal Deal all day which is a 1 topping XL Pizza, 16 wings and a 2 liter dink for $30.99.

Here’s the entire menu:

Food Truck Spotlight: I Heart Ice Cream

May 26, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Liz & Danny Cortes opened a new mobile ice cream business last week, just in time for a summer of serving up  ice cream around the Miami Valley. You’ll see Dayton’s first-ever rolled ice cream truck, e I Heart Ice Cream, all over town this summer.
A Dayton native, Liz shares she comes from a family of entrepreneurs  and she has fond memories of her grandmother’s vintage ice truck, which inspired their business choice. This husband and wife team are veterans of the food service business and during the pandemic they decided to make plans to launch their own family business.  So they commissioned a 6 x 10 trailer to be built with a 1950’s look to serve a delicious sweet cream liquid based ice cream that  is poured onto a frozen pan and then chopped, mixed, spread and rolled right in front of you!

Danny  says when they were doing research they had a friend in Thailand that told him about rolled ice cream and they where seeing it in other big cities, so they are excited about being something new to the food truck scene in the Miami Valley.   They pour a fresh cream based sweet vanilla  onto a frozen stainless plate, mix it up with ingredients, like oreo’s and chocolate sauce, pressed flat and in a couple of minute it’s pressed out and then rolled into strips of frozen ice cream.
They feature 10 different flavors including vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter, cotton candy, cake batter, strawberry  and they even have a vegan option.  They have a menu featuring a dozen suggestions,
like the Strawberry & Banana Rolls pictured here–  Sweet Cream Vanilla Base + Banana + Strawberry Syrup. Topped with Whipped Cream, Strawberry Drizzle, Strawberry Pocky Stick, Banana & Strawberry Garnish.
Since it’s a true family business, they’ve used their children, Ezra- 5 years old and Inez – 2 year olds  as taste testers, a job they are very willing to take on.
Here’s where you can find the I Heart Ice Cream cart this weekend:

5/28 4-8pm Xenia Food Truck Rally
5/31- 2-6pm Idol Swim Club Opening Day
or check their website calendar for future dates.
