THE NEON Opens FRANCES HA – Best Reviewed Comedy of the Year!

June 5, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

fhaHello Everyone,

If you still need to see MUD or TO THE WONDER, you’ll only have until Thursday (June 6) to see them at THE NEON. On Friday (June 7), we will open the new comedy FRANCES HA – directed by Noah Baumbach (director of THE SQUID AND THE WHALE). This new comedy has been receiving fantastic reviews (100% reviews from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post to name a few), and I think it is equal parts early Woody Allen and Francois Truffaut. In addition to this new movie, the beautiful film RENOIR will stick around for another week. For this week’s remaining showtimes, visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for FRANCES HA: “Frances (Greta Gerwig) lives in New York, but she doesn’t really have an apartment. Frances is an apprentice for a dance company, but shes not really a dancer. Frances has a best friend named Sophie, but they aren’t really speaking anymore. Frances throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Frances wants so much more than she has but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness. FRANCES HA is a modern comic fable that explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption.” (taken from IFC Films) Click this LINK to visit the film’s fun, official site.

Our special screening of GIRL RISING sold out…and many people were disappointed that they didn’t get tickets. Don’t let that happen to you for our upcoming screening of I DO. There are still tickets available for Thursday, June 20 at 7:30. (I saw this film at The Cleveland International Film Festival, and the audience adored it!) “A gay Brit living in New York is deprived of his immigration status, and risks losing his family and life in the U.S. He marries his lesbian best friend to remain in the country and stay with his family, but things get complicated when he meets the love of his life and is forced to make an impossible choice.” This one night only screening is part of Dayton’s PRIDE festivities. Tickets are $9 for General Admission. Members of The Greater Dayton LGBT Center get in for $7 (with valid membership card). Tickets are on sale now at THE NEON’s box office. Check out this trailer…if it intrigues you in the slightest, then I think you’ll love the film (as the trailer doesn’t really do the film justice).

THE NEON Opens RENOIR and New Terrence Malick This Weekend!

May 30, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

RENOIR9.jpgHello Everyone,

Another 2 new films are heading to THE NEON this weekend – RENOIR and TO THE WONDER…and MUD will stick around for another week.  We’ve had several really great, fun films come and go rather quickly around here (i.e. – STARBUCK, THE SAPPHIRES).  If you see a title that piques your interest, hurry down.  It may not stick around too long.

Every year, The Dayton Daily News holds a contest for “Best Movie Theater.” Special thanks to all of you who took the time to vote. WE WON…and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Synopsis for RENOIR: “Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, Jean Renoir — son of the Impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste — returns home to convalesce after being wounded in World War I. At his side is Andree, a young woman who rejuvenates, enchants, and inspires both father and son.” (taken from Samuel Goldwyn Films) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BENkbm28gNQ’]

Synopsis for TO THE WONDER (One Week Only!): “The anticipated new feature from renowned filmmaker Terrence Malick (Tree of Life, The New World), TO THE WONDER boldly and lyrically explores the complexities of love in all its forms. Parisian single mother Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Midwestern tourist Neil (Ben Affleck) fall madly in love in France and relocate to Oklahoma with Marina’s young daughter to start a life together. As their relationship wanes and her visa nears expiration, Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem) who is struggling with his faith, while Neil renews a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Jane (Rachel McAdams).” (taken from Magnolia Pictures) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site. If you’re interested in the films of Terrence Malick, you won’t want to miss this one on the big screen.

Advanced tickets are only available on the website listed above. If tickets remain, we will be able to sell them at the door on the night of the show. Watch the trailer…this film looks terrific!

On Thursday, June 20 at 7:30, we will host a special screening of the new film I DO. Down the Path from Novice to Filmmaker

May 26, 2013 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

A Web PhotoA quick update on one of the cool things happening in our community:

Sure, it takes a lot more than a weekend to become a filmmaker. The best are always learning, exploring and growing. But for a great jumpstart to a filmmaking hobby, career, education – FilmDayton offers the Filmmaker Boot Camp, a two-day intensive experience where participants are the writers, directors, cast, crew and editors.

Last weekend, eleven aspiring filmmakers joined FilmDayton instructors at DATV for this experience in filmmaking. On day one, they dove in with a mini-film school with workshops in visual style, writing, production techniques and editing. Over the course of just two days, they took this information and created their own short films.

Now, their creations are available on the FilmDayton YouTube page. Check out the work of the newest filmmakers in our community!

Some photos from the event.

The short films: 30 Minutes for Lunch, Passing Notes, Deadline.

Want to get involved?

  • The last Tuesday of every month, FilmDayton offers Film Connections – part networking and  part education, this is an opportunity for aspiring and professional filmmakers to come together around a topic of importance and share updates. Great topics coming up include actors and directors (May), animation (June) and a collection of updates from members (July).
  • Are you more of a film lover and less of a filmmaker? Don’t worry – you’re joining us at the right time. The 2013 Eichelberger FilmDayton Festival will host thoughtful, engaging, entertaining and fun features that are locally connected as well as show the best of shorts submitted from across the globe. Save the date for August 23-25, 2013.
  • There is not currently another boot camp scheduled, but you can get on the FilmDayton mailing list (scroll to bottom of page) to be kept in the loop for all future projects. We host boot camps as well as professional development workshops on varying topics. you can also bring an exclusive boot camp in for your class, business, organization.

Thanks for your many well-wishes during my European holiday. I had a magnificent time in Germany (visiting old friends & “family” from my time as an exchange student) and Spain (visiting one of my dearest friends in Barcelona). As I anticipated, Diana and Mike did a great job holding down the fort at THE NEON. Many thanks to them…their work makes it possible for me to escape now and then.

See you soon!

All the best,
Jonathan

Oscar Nominated NO Starts Friday at THE NEON

May 15, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

no!-film-posterHello Everyone,

We’re adding something to the mix this weekend, but you’ll only have one week to catch NO – the feature film from Chile starring Gael Garcia Bernal. NO was nominated for “Best Foreign Film” at this year’s Oscars, and it won an award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It also received 100% reviews from Entertainment Weekly, The Chicago Sun-Times, and Time Out New York. We will hold MUD and THE SAPPHIRES (though showtimes are changing). For this week’s remaining showtimes, visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for NO: “In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a referendum on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. With scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.” (taken from The Weinstein Company) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Food Matters Screening & Expert Panel

April 22, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

44d123xk58uz72seto8u6eapebguljnvThe Culpeper House, in association with Antioch University Midwest, present a free, public screening of the thought provoking documentary film, Food Matters, to be followed by an expert panel discussion featuring some of the Miami Valley’s most important voices in holistic healthcare, nutrition, and organic farming. The event will take place in PNC Bank Auditorium at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs. The screening will begin at 6:00pm with the panel discussion to follow. Coffee and tea will be available in the AUM lobby beginning at 5:30pm.

Please direct questions to The Culpeper House at admin @ culpeperhouse.com or 937 536. 9369. RSVP is encouraged, at http://foodmattersscreening.eventbrite.com/

About the Film, by Food Matters:

‘Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food’ – Hippocrates. That is the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial new documentary film Food Matters from Producer-Directors James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch.

With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what’s wrong with our malnourished bodies, it’s no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. Food Matters sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide ‘sickness industry’ and gives people some scientifically verifiable solutions for overcoming illness naturally.

‘With access to better information people invariably
make better choices for their health…’

In what promises to be the most contentious idea put forward, the filmmakers have interviewed several leading experts in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.

The focus of the film is in helping us rethink the belief systems fed to us by our modern medical and health care establishments. The interviewees point out that not every problem requires costly, major medical attention and reveal many alternative therapies that can be more effective, more economical, less harmful and less invasive than conventional medical treatments.

The ‘Food Matters’ duo have independently funded the film from start to finish in order to remain as unbiased as possible, delivering a clear and concise message to the world. Food Matters.

TRANCE & PLACE BEYOND THE PINES + Special Events at THE NEON!

April 18, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

MELTING2Hello Everyone,

I just got back from The Cleveland International Film Festival, and I had a magnificent time. Over the course of 5 days, I saw 15 films and met a couple filmmakers I greatly admire. Several of you have asked how one goes about visiting the Toronto Film Fest. Though I wouldn’t dissuade you from attending that fest, I’d be remiss if I didn’t encourage you to attend this great festival which is just a few hours away. This year, there were 180 features and 165 shorts to chose from, and this incredible fest just keeps growing. Keep your eye on it next spring!

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES had a terrific weekend at THE NEON, but TRANCE fell short of our expectations. That said, we’ll hold both films…but TRANCE will more than likely only play for one more week.  For this week’s remaining showtimes, visit our official site: www.neonmovies.com.

Musician/Filmmaker Henrique Couto Has Halloween Come Early With ‘Babysitter Massacre’

April 11, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Babysitter2

Scene from “Babysitter Massacre”

In just a little over seven months from now, people will put on costumes of the usual choices-policeman, firefighter, doctor, witches, devils, etc.  There will be an overly large group of people who will be dressing up like their favorite character from the hit show ‘The Walking Dead’, along with the possibility of dressing as a ‘walker’.  And don’t forget about the vampires.  Once the costume is chosen, the fake blood is applied, among a few other features to add to the whole presentation.  From that point, those individuals are ready to celebrate Halloween.

So, you are probably wondering why Halloween would be spoken about in April.  Most folks just want the sun to stay out and help the temperatures rise to a point where we don’t see our breath in the air anymore.  Well, Halloween is a holiday that clusters of the general public around the world celebrate year-round.  The scare and horror factors are what give the day its unique charm.  People come in droves each year to the haunted attractions that are sprinkled all around the area, from mazes to abandoned hospitals.  Local musician/filmmaker Henrique Couto will be adding his stamp on the calendar day with his upcoming horror film, Babysitter Massacre.  “I was watching some of these slasher/horror movies on Netflix, and I felt like I could make one that could be there with them.  So, I went to work on the script, and it really took off from there”, Couto explained when I asked him about how the idea for the movie came up.  The movie will be having its world premiere on April 12th at Englewood Cinemas in Englewood, Ohio starting at 10.

Babysitter1

Scene from “Babysitter Massacre”

Babysitter Massacre’s storyline takes place in the small town of Ray Falls, Ohio.  A group of young women that belonged to the same babysitting club in high school have gathered together on Halloween evening.  The group split from one another when one of the girls died suddenly.  Unfortunately for the ladies, a masked man  is coming after the women and killing them one by one.  The question is-who is this killer?!   Why is he coming after the women who were part of the babysitting group?!  Can anyone stop this person?!  “The movie is going to be a bloodbath”, Couto said jokingly when we recently sat down together to talk about the movie.

Couto is a duel threat in the area.  He has recorded a couple of albums playing his signature insturment-the raging electric ukulele.  Its unique in its way, and his music is full of angst and snarky lyrics.  However, working on films has been his top priority for most of his life.  When he was old enough to drive, he packed his bags and moved to New Jersey to work at a production studio.  At the production studio he would work on post-production and also go work at conventions to help promote the production companies upcoming movies.  Years being with the company gave Couto the experience that he would need to begin his own journey into the filmmaking business.  His move back to Dayton only has made the process much more enjoyable.  “This town (Dayton) really seems to be the place for me, with lots of supportive and creative people to work with.”

The horror aspect of the movie won’t be new for Couto.  HeadCheese, Slumber Party Murder Mania, Faces of Schlock, Marty Jenkins and the Vampie Bitches are some his films that are part of the increasing collection of the genre.  One thing that sets them apart from other horror films is an element of sarcasm to them.  Watching them you can’t help but laugh at times at the dialog with the characters.  The films tend to lean on the side of not taking themselves too seriously. Then without warning-Couto will send the shock value and supply some frightening moments.

Bleeding Through and Depression: The Movie took a different path than the earlier films.  Bleeding Through was a thriller about a young woman who descends into a life of chaos when her parents pass away.  Depression was a comedy that centered on a group of people whose lives are anything but smooth.  With Babysitter Massacre, Couto will be returning to his roots.  With this film, he will be making his viewers try to squirm and turn away to a new level.  “The torture scenes are very hard to watch, I am not going to lie”, mentioned Couto.

Couto is already hard at work on a couple of other projects, including one titled A Bulldog for Christmas, which is scheduled to be released in December.  The film is about a cynical college student being magically transformed into a bulldog until she learns the meaning of her family and the Christmas spirit during the holiday break.  “I love talking animal movies, so I thought that it would be great to make one.  Also, I needed something on the lighter side of things after working on Babysitter Massacre (laughter)”, Couto said.  “We have some really funny ideas to have put in place with the movie.  We also have a really cute bulldog.  What more could you want?!”  The project is currently going thru a fundraiser on the website IndieGoGo.com.  The project has a few weeks left to make its goal, which will help pay for production cost and help manufacture DVD’s and Blu-Ray discs.  To help contribute to the movie, go to this link.

To see the next great locally made slasher film Babysitter Massacre, come to the world premiere screening at Englewood Cinemas on April 12th.  Showtime is 10pm.  To add some fun to the screening, and being as how that this is a Halloween themed movie, whoever comes in costume will receive a prize from Game Swap in Kettering and Are U Game in Piqua.  Tickets for the showing are $8.  To see the trailer, click below.

42 – OPENS 04/11/13 @ 10pm!

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. “42” tells the story of two men the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.
