On Friday, we will open Danny Boyle’s TRANCE (Boyle directed SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (our biggest hit ever), MILLIONS and 127 HOURS) and Derek Cianfrance’s THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (Cianfrance directed BLUE VALENTINE – which also starred Ryan Gosling).

Synopsis for TRANCE: “Simon (James McAvoy), a fine art auctioneer, teams up with a criminal gang to steal a Goya painting worth millions of dollars, but after suffering a blow to the head during the heist he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Frank (Vincent Cassel) hires hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb (Rosario Dawson) to delve into the darkest recesses of Simon’s psyche. On Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30, Five River Metroparks will host a screening of WHERE THE YELLOWSTONE GOES. The film “follows a 30-day drift boat journey down the longest ‘undammed’ river in the lower 48. Intimate portraits of locals in both booming cities and dusty, dwindling towns along the Yellowstone River illustrate the history and controversies surrounding this enigmatic watershed leading to questions about its future. “The India Foundation celebrates One Hundred Years of Indian Cinema: 1913 – 2013 with a Tribute to Dada Saheb Phalke – Father of the Indian Cinema. The first Indian silent film produced, written and directed by Mr. Phalke was released in Bombay on May 3, 1913. A screening of selected clips entitled Silent Movies – Early Years will be presented on Saturday, May 4th at Noon (the collection includes digitized clips from Phalke’s RAJA HARISHCHANDRA and KALIYA MARDAN (1919) and clips from the only surviving Bengali silent film JAMAI BABU (Son-in-Law) by Kalipada Das). FilmDayton in the Community

You hear great updates from Jonathan at The Neon and Jeff at Rave here on Dayton Most Metro regarding the films coming to town – but what about the film projects FROM town? What about the creative and talented filmmakers who are here in our community making a difference and doing great work? I’m happy to catch you up on just some of the work of FilmDayton and our film scene today. To stay in the loop on all the projects, follow FilmDayton on Facebook for join the email list.

FilmDayton is dedicated growing our own film community with classes, workshops, networking opportunities, screenings and the annual festival. Plus, FilmDayton works to support projects that come to the region – like the upcoming feature We’re Doing Fine shooting in Dayton this fall.

Networking and film talk at 2012 Festival

Here’s a quick update on how you can learn more and get involved in our film community!

1) The 2013 Eichelberger FilmDayton Festival will be a major leap forward for our region’s festival – coming up August 23-25! We are truly an international film festival with shorts from multiple continents already submitted. Save the date, because you won’t want to miss:

Juried shorts in the genres of narrative, documentary, horror, Ohio-based, and animation/experimental. Encourage the filmmakers you know to submit!
The Festival is known for our great shorts, features, workshops and fun. Last year, we launched the FilmDayton Awards. The team is now accepting submissions for nominees in our community who have great achievements in career film work, demonstrated support for the film community, and emerging artists demonstrating innovation and skills.
FilmDayton has partnered with Sundog Film Festival – a showcase films from talented high school media arts students across the state. Teachers and students can submit now to be a part of this networking/education event for young filmmakers.

2) Education is at the core of what we do. And this spring, the schedule continues. FilmDayton’s popular Film Connections welcome filmmakers and film lovers to network, learn and share updates on great projects. Often hosted at ThinkTV, this spring we’ll be taking a couple field trips to DATV and Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. Only $5 to attend a FREE for members.

3) And for those aspiring filmmakers who wonder how to get into the game and what it’s all about, FilmDayton is excited to bring back our popular 48-hour Filmmaker Boot Camp. This is an intensive weekend introduction to film making including writing, shooting, directing, editing and more. Participants walk in green and walk out having complete their own short film.

4) Freak Club – In 2012, FilmDayton tackled a wildly ambitious project – to create our own Web series. Started as an out-growth of Film Connections, this project challenged us to put our money, time and efforts where our mouth was. We advocate for the Dayton region as a great film community – saying that we’ve got the talented cast/crew and varied locations needed for film projects. The Web series set out to prove it! After hearing story pitches, re-writing scripts, location scouting, casting, lots of pre-production, three full weeks of shooting, and months and months of editing – we’re in the final stages. FilmDayton is welcoming local musicians to put the final touch on the Web series – titled Freak Club – by submitting two minutes of an original composition to be used as the closing credits. Get involved today!

EXHIBITION: MANET:PORTRAYING LIFE – 04/11/13 @ 730pm!

The eagerly awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, Manet: Portraying Life will be captured for cinema screens worldwide. This is the first ever major exhibition in the UK devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet, spanning his entire career. The exhibition will bring together great works from across Europe, Asia and the USA. Cinemagoers will see exclusive behind-the-scenes moments of the Royal Academy’s exhibition preparation — moments usually hidden from view — and experience a detailed, superbly crafted biography of Manet and 19th century Paris. Host Tim Marlow along with expert guests examines the work of one of the all-time great artists.

EVIL DEAD – OPENS 04/04/13 @ 10pm!

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

JURASSIC PARK 3D – OPENS 04/04/13 @ 10pm!

Universal Pictures will release Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking masterpiece “Jurassic Park” in 3D on April 5, 2013. With his remastering of the epic into a state-of-the-art 3D format, Spielberg introduces the three-time Academy Award-winning blockbuster to a new generation of moviegoers and allows longtime fans to experience the world he envisioned in a way that was unimaginable during the film’s original release.

This Thursday at 7:30, “Peace on Fifth will present movie #3 for their trafficking awareness campaign – Start Freedom Dayton (Sponsored by Love146 Dayton, Stop Human Trafficking Dayton and Peace on Fifth). FLESH, a documentary about sex trafficking in the U.S., challenges our ideas of slavery, human trafficking & prostitution. The story is told by the girls who have escaped and those who are currently enslaved, former and current pimps, and modern day abolitionists. The post-screening discussion will be led by Elizabeth Ranade Janis, Ohio’s first human trafficking coordinator. Tickets: $10 day of show at THE NEON. Advance tickets: $8.50 at Peace on Fifth (508 E. 5th 937-367-7215).” (taken from press notes)

This year’s edition of LUNAFEST – a collection of 9 short films made by, for and about women – will take place on Sunday, April 7 at 3:00. In addition to the nationally touring program (which you can read all about by clicking this LINK), this year’s local line-up will also feature a short film by WSU student Megan Hague – WOMEN WHO YELL. (I previously announced that Hague would be at the screening, but that has changed. She will not be able to attend.) Proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Fund and Planned Parenthood – Southwest Ohio. The suggested donation for tickets is $10 each (minimum of $5 per ticket). You can purchase advanced tickets by visiting this LINK.

Downtown resident and NEON regular Hector Escobar wants us to screen the film BLESS ME, ULTIMA. In order to make the screening happen, we need to “sell” 65 tickets by the end of March. If that many tickets are reserved, the screening will take place Wednesday, April 10 at 7:30. (This is a lot like our screening of THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE. There’s no gamble. Well if you haven’t already heard, they recently unveiled a new website about Dayton, and new content (the 2nd part of a 3-part documentary found on the site) was just released last week. We’re moving along this weekend. If you still need to see QUARTET, you only have through Thursday to catch it at THE NEON. On Friday, we start a new, stylish thriller which clearly pays homage to Hitchcock – STOKER. We will also begin a one-week engagement of the new documentary WEST OF MEMPHIS. Synopsis for STOKER: “After India’s father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother. EMPEROR and QUARTET Continue Successful Runs at THE NEON!

The first quarter for 2013 has been very good for us at THE NEON. Thanks to all of you who continue to support our films! QUARTET has been huge, HYDE PARK ON HUDSON and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK were big hits, and EMPEROR is off to a very good start. We appreciate your patronage and your great word-of-mouth marketing that you do for us. Thank you!

We will hold both of our current titles for another week – QUARTET and EMPEROR. It’s almost certain that this will be the final week for QUARTET…so if you need to see it (or see it again), hurry down. Remaining showtimes for this week are at: www.neonmovies.com.

And The Oscar Goes To…

During 2012, the 5,856 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were captivated by such subjects as Abraham Lincoln, a teenager battling a tiger, the Iran hostage crisis, and the postapocalyptic universe of a young girl named Hushpuppy. As the 85th annual Academy Awards beckon, period drama “Lincoln” leads with 12 nominations, but the technically striking “Life of Pi” and popular frontrunner “Argo” are major contenders. As always, anything is possible when winners will be revealed Sunday, February 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Here are my predictions in the top six categories.

BEST PICTURE

I really wish the Academy would return to five nominees here. Still, this slate, deemed the nine best out of 282 eligible films, is uniformly strong nonetheless. “Lincoln” has it all from thought-provoking historical context to cinematic expertise, but Ben Affleck being snubbed for Best Director has shockingly propelled the underdog narrative of “Argo” throughout the award season. However, the intimately sublime “Amour,” a poignant foreign film about an elderly couple shaken by sickness, could garner enough votes from older members of the Academy to surprise everyone when the final envelope of the evening is opened.

Lee defied the odds by adapting Yann Martel’s challenging novel into a visceral, visual stunner, but Spielberg’s splendidly understated work, which extends to the brilliance of his cast and creative team, will not be ignored. Still, it would be cool to see Zeitlin win for his bold and imaginative indie bayou concoction.

I’m a huge admirer of Chastain’s superbly nuanced performance but must admit I was blown away by Lawrence, whose magnetic, jaw-dropping range of emotions and innate sex appeal signified her dynamic growth as a formidable leading lady. Even so, Riva’s devastating decline as a former music teacher immobilized by a stroke was an utterly heartbreaking, meticulously skillful feat. And at 86, Riva would become the oldest Oscar winner, which adds to her recent momentum as a sentimental favorite. But foreign language winners are rare. Marion Cotillard was the last to prevail for “La Vie en Rose” in 2008. As so, I’m going with Lawrence but would love to see the adorable, mesmerizing 9-year-old Wallis, the youngest-ever Best Actress nominee, take her rightful place in Oscar history alongside former child winners Tatum O’Neal and Anna Paquin.

The great thing about this highly competitive category is that the losers can return home to the Oscar (or Oscars in De Niro’s case) they already own. Jones’ gravitas and impressive grasp of screenwriter Tony Kushner’s grandiose language gives him the edge over Hoffman’s commanding mastermind and De Niro’s surprisingly tender patriarch. However, watch out for the scene-stealing Arkin benefitting from the “Argo” groundswell even though he basically played a variation of himself again.

If Day-Lewis deserves three Oscars so does Field, who absolutely gave one of the finest performances of her career as the feisty, grieving first lady. I also found Hunt at the top of her game after a long absence portraying a kindly sex therapist. Even so, Oscar loves musical theater so look for Hathaway to reign for rediscovering the melancholy beauty within “I Dreamed a Dream.”

Thank you! We had a tremendous weekend…our best in over 6 months. We will hold both films – QUARTET (which is a crowd-pleasing, huge hit) and AMOUR (which won’t stick around nearly as long…but is a powerful, amazingly crafted film). Remaining showtimes for this week are at www.neonmovies.com. In addition to our 2 current hits, we will present an encore screening of the Oscar-Nominated Shorts Films. The Animated Shorts will play on Friday at 1:00, and the Live Action Shorts will play on Sunday at 1:00.

“On Saturday at Noon, the Junior Leaguers of Dayton – an African American Women’s Service Organization – will hold an annual fundraiser which raises money for scholarships. They will screen the film RED HOOK SUMMER (directed by Spike Lee and written by James McBride) – a coming of age movie about a young African American male who visits his grandparents living in the projects of Brooklyn New York. The discussion following the movie will be led by Dr. Michael Williams, a psychologist. The price is $30.00 which includes a movie ticket, glass of wine, soda, and popcorn. Next Thursday, February 28 at 7:30, Peace on Fifth will hold a screening of HALF THE SKY. We don’t yet have all the needed details for this event. Omari Matlock, a former Daytonian, will premiere his latest film – DESCENT OF A SUPERSTAR – on Saturday, March 2 at Noon. “When money power and fame is not enough, a young pop star turns to habits put in place by dark spirits.” A minimum donation of $10 is required for each ticket. Each ticket includes admission to the film and to the After Party/Networking event at Therapy Cafe at 3:00 (be sure to bring head shots, demo reels & resumes to this event if you are in or aspiring to be in the entertainment industry). I’m excited to announce that Square One Salon & Spa has once again donated a prize for our Oscar contest! This Sunday marks the date of our Free Annual Oscar Party. Ballots are now available in our lobby and prizes have started to arrive (though you must be present at the party in order to win prizes). We hope you’ll make plans to spend this fun night with us. We will begin seating for this party as close to 7pm as possible…which is when the Red-Carpet pre-show begins. (We will begin collecting ballots on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Noon…collected ballots (only one per person present) will result in our seating priority for the party.) Make a Date for the Academy Awards: Dessert with Oscar

Dayton LOVES the movies! Art houses, local theaters, megaplexes and drive-ins all across the region guarantee you can see all the nominated pictures. Plus – beyond watching the movies, we’ve got a great collection of professional and aspiring filmmakers working and living right here. We’ve got the connections to the movies, and on Hollywood’s biggest night – Oscar Night – we’ve got the parties, too!

One of those parties is Dessert with Oscar – a fundraiser for local nonprofit, FilmDayton. FilmDayton hosts the annual FilmDayton Festival (scheduled for August 23-25, 2013), offers professional development for filmmakers, networking and educational opportunities, and acts as the regional film commission – supporting indie and commercial film projects that want to use the backdrop of the Miami Valley for their project.

This Oscar watch party puts the emphasis on party. Instead of seeing the action on the big screen in stadium seating, they welcome guests to The Venue on Third (905 E. Third Street) where multiple TVs will broadcast the show, allowing you to watch the action while enjoying the party. What’s included?

Local chefs from great places such as Ovations, Baked, Scratch Event Catering, Carmen’s Deli, J. Gumbo’s UD, and the Sinclair Culinary Competition Team create tasty desserts themed after the Best Picture Nominees. You might get some authentic bread pudding out of Louisiana for Beasts of the Southern Wild or perhaps enjoy a twist on some ‘white cake’ for Django Unchained. Come and see what kind of creativity connects the desserts to their films!

As a fundraiser for the organization, we’re keeping ticket prices affordable, but bringing the bling with an exciting film-themed silent auction! See the pictures of some of the great prizes. Everything for the practical bidder (you have to go to dinner anyway) to the film lover (autographed photos, DVDs, pilot scripts and more) to the Dayton Connoisseur (tickets to great local experiences) to the true adventurer with a Specialty Background Role on a hit TV comedy with extra casting by Calltime Casting. You never know what stars may show up when you’re on set at the reality-TV spoof The Real Husbands of Hollywood – see the clip below to get an idea!

Food, prizes, and so much more. If you know your movies, you can submit a ballot and make your predictions on who is taking Oscar home.
