$500,000 in improvements for Triangle Park

November 17, 2022 By Dayton937

The City of Dayton announces the newest investment of Dayton Recovery Plan funds following the Nov. 16 City Commission approval of a $500,000-plus contract for improvements at historic Triangle Park.

A $577,118 contract for installation of new infrastructure and amenities as well as demolition of obsolete facilities at the 61.5-acre park was awarded to Double Jay Construction, LLC. The Triangle Park upgrades consist of:

  • Installation of two new park shelters;
  • Removal of nine obsolete shelters and one restroom building;
  • Installation of new modular restrooms;
  • Installation of fitness equipment, picnic tables and pathways.

The project is scheduled for completion in July of 2023. The City of Dayton Department of Public Works will oversee the contract, which has a minority business enterprise participation rate of 25.19 percent.

The planned enhancements continue the ongoing improvement of Triangle Park in north Dayton, one of the largest City of Dayton-owned parks. In 2015, the historic Howell Field baseball facility was rededicated following renovations supported by the Cincinnati Reds (Howell Field has been home to many of Dayton’s finest college, high school and amateur baseball for more than 55 years). In July of 2022, an all-new, four-acre dog park was opened for use at Triangle Park. The park was also the site of the first-ever NFL game, played by the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles in 1920.

About the Dayton Recovery Plan

The Dayton Recovery Plan is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to address the infrastructure, economic and equity issues that exist in the city by using a data-driven approach to analyze socio-economic, health, and demographic data to make informed funding decisions. These investments directly impact minority communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic and long-standing economic and social inequities in Dayton. The Dayton Recovery Plan is our city’s innovative plan to utilize our $138 million share of the American Rescue Plan Act funds, the largest grant in Dayton’s history. The Triangle Park project is another piece of the Dayton Recovery Plan’s $55 million Improving Our Neighborhoods component. For a plan overview, go to daytonohio.gov/drp.

Launched in  1936, the world-famous WIENERMOBILE was created to  lift the country’s spirits during the great depression. It quickly became a national Icon, visiting cities all over the country.

In 1963 they debuted their jingle,”My bologna has a first name, it’s ‘O-S-C-A-R’ My bologna has a second name, It’s M-A-Y-E-R. Oh, I love to eat it every day,And if you ask me why I’ll say, Cause’ Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A!!!!”  (Admit it- you just sang that in your head).

It went on to become one of the longest-running TV commercials in the country.

On November 18 and 19, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will make two stops in Montgomery County as part of its journey across the U.S.

While the Wienermobile is in town, guests can get a photo with the 27-foot-long hotdog-shaped vehicle, as well as a free ‘Wiener Whistle’.

You’ll find the iconic vehicle at  two local Walmarts :

A Total Lunar Eclipse Will Turn The Moon Blood Red

November 7, 2022 By Dayton937

According to our friends at Dayton Weather Spot we’ll “have a Total Lunar Eclipse tonight [11/08]. It won’t begin until 3:02 AM (WSW) as the Earth’s shadow begins crossing the moon’s disk from the upper left. You’ll only see a dimming at first.
It’ll reach maximum (totality) at 5:59 AM (WNW). The eclipse will end at 7:21 AM as the moon sets but the sky will be quite bright by then. By 5:16 AM the moon should take on a reddish glow. “

Total lunar eclipses, commonly known as “blood moons,” only happen during full moons when the Earth completely shields the moon from the sun. Once the sun, earth and the moon are exactly aligned, light from simultaneous sunrises and sunsets around the earth project onto the moon, briefly causing a coppery-red coat on the moon’s surface. The more dust or clouds in the Earth’s atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the moon will appear, according to NASA.

From the moon, the total lunar eclipse would shine a bright red aura around the Earth’s dark surface.

Unlike the blinding effect of solar eclipses, special equipment is not needed to see the reddish hues, but observing in a dark environment away from bright lights makes for the best viewing, according to NASA.

Astronomers can determine total lunar eclipses years in advance due to their knowledge of the moon’s orbital patterns.

“It all comes down to knowing the orbit of the moon very exactly where we can predict down to the minute an eclipse of the sun and moon,” says Noah Petro, a scientist with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Project at NASA.

This is the last time residents across the United States will be able to see a totally dyed moon until May 14, 2025.

RTA celebrates 50 years of service with a celebration & free rides

November 1, 2022 By Dayton937

Join the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) in celebrating 50 years of providing essential public transportation to the greater Dayton community at our public event on Nov. 25, 2022, at Wright Stop Plaza from 4 pm to 9 pm, as part of the annual Downtown Dayton Holiday Festival which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The family-friendly event will include a kids area with balloons, shirts, and coloring books, as well as an educational presentation on the history of RTA, a photobooth, and 50th Anniversary T-shirts for adults. This event coincides with the Grande Illumination and Dayton Children’s Parade held on Courthouse Square, across the street from Wright Stop Plaza.

To commemorate this historic milestone, RTA will also run a “transit happy hours” promotion. Starting Friday, Nov. 4, all rides after 5 p.m. will be free Monday through Friday until Dec. 30. The RTA got the idea from an old system map from the 1970s that offered a similar promotion. The free rides after five apply to both fixed-route and paratransit services. Riders can also still take advantage of free weekends every Saturday and Sunday through Jan. 1, 2023.

The Dayton region has built its transportation foundation on more than a century of progress. The first known public transportation system started in 1870, with a horse-drawn streetcar line that ran along a section of Third Street, from what is now James H. McGee Boulevard to Findlay Street.

In August 1888, the first electric line began service in Dayton. To this day, Dayton has the distinction of having the longest running, continuously electric-propelled transit lines in the United States.

On Nov. 4, 1972, the Miami Valley Regional Transit Authority was created after it purchased the assets of City Transit, serving the cities of Dayton, Oakwood and Kettering. Since then, a lot has changed over the past 50 years:

  • Service was expanded countywide in 1980.
  • In the late 1980s, the RTA Board considered dismantling the electric trolley system. Following widespread public support for the retention of the electric trolleybus system, the RTA board decided to retain electric transit in 1991. RTA is now one of four U.S. cities that have electric trolley buses.
  • Board of Trustees voted to change the name of Miami Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA) to the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (GDRTA) in 2003.
  • In 2014, the RTA tested its first NexGen model trolley. This was considered a prototype for RTA to see if purchasing more of this vehicle would be an effective move. In 2019, RTA procured a large number of NexGen trolleys.
  • Tapp Pay, Greater Dayton RTA’s mobile ticketing system, was launched in May 2020. By 2021, RTA became completely cashless, replacing the old fare box with Tapp Pay.
