December 25, 2022 By Dayton937

Communities used to bid adieu to the old year and welcome the new one by ringing bells, often in churches. The tradition may have grown out of other occasions where bells marked an end “passing bells” tolled when someone died—or celebrated a beginning (like wedding bells).

Dayton Earns Awards For Sustainability Accomplishments

December 24, 2022 By Dayton937

The City of Dayton’s sustainability efforts are getting noticed.

Power a Clean Future Ohio, a statewide, non-partisan coalition, has acknowledged Dayton with three awards:

  • The Climate Action Community Award recognizes Dayton’s “Strategy for a Sustainable Dayton,” the City’s comprehensive sustainability plan.
  • The Clean Energy Community Award recognizes Dayton’s 100% renewable energy electric aggregation program.
  • The Energy Justice Champion Award recognizes Dayton’s commitment and actions to achieve energy justice for all Dayton residents.

Meg Maloney, City of Dayton sustainability specialist, was also presented the Clean Energy Staff Champion award for her leadership and dedication to building a clean energy future for Dayton.

Mayor Jeffrey Mims accepted the awards on behalf of the City of Dayton at a Dec. 16 awards ceremony co-hosted by Power a Clean Future Ohio and the Ohio Mayor’s Alliance. The two organizations highlighted these initiatives as the driving reasons behind Dayton’s recognition:

  • A 100% by 2035 electric vehicle fleet goal.
  • A carbon neutrality by 2050 goal.
  • A renewable aggregation program saving residents 30% on electricity bills when compared to AES Ohio pricing.
  • Work to install solar generation facilities at the former Kittyhawk Golf Center.
  • Partnering with local organizations to tackle energy burdens on residential households.
  • The equity commitment in the City’s sustainability plan and budgeting process.

Dayton was one of Power a Clean Future Ohio’s founding cities; the coalition now consists of more than 40 cities. For more information on Dayton’s sustainability plan, go to daytonohio.gov/sustainability.

ArriveSafe Program is Back For The Holiday

December 21, 2022 By Dayton937

Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced that his ArriveSafe program will be offered over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weekends, thanks to the continued support from Heidelberg Distributing/Budweiser and Key-Ads.

Prosecutor Heck said, “I am happy to announce that over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, there were no fatal traffic crashes in Montgomery County. In large part because so many in our community made the smart choice and did not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and instead used ArriveSafe. I am proud to announce that 189 people got home safely by getting a free Uber ride home.”

Prosecutor Heck noted that his ArriveSafe Program has provided nearly 8,600 free rides home for Montgomery County residents since the program was started in 2007.

Over the past five years, due to a deadly combination of drug and alcohol-impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and excessive speed, Ohio motorists had over 78,000 OVI-related traffic crashes, which resulted in more than 3,000 fatalities.

ArriveSafe will be offering free Uber rides home for Montgomery County residents over Christmas from 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2022, through 6:00 a.m. Monday, December 26, 2022, and again over New Year’s, from 6:00 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2022 through 6:00 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2023. Those residents who need a ride home can scan the QR code at www.mcpo.com which will add a voucher to their Uber account.

Prosecutor Heck added, “Let’s work together and make sure there are no fatal traffic crashes in Montgomery County this Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Let ArriveSafe provide you with a free ride home.”

Dear Santa, All for I Want For Christmas Is A New Bike

December 19, 2022 By GreatMiamiRiverway

About ten years ago, I purchased a bike at a local shop and it served me well. The kind of bike you take out on short trips. I rode it all over the Riverway on our bike trail system. However, this year I joined with some friends for a 2-day, 200+ mile cycling adventure. I realized very quickly that my old bike needed an upgrade. We averaged 60 miles a day for the first two days, then 75 miles on day three. If I am going to do that again I will need a faster bike, and one with more comfort features.

Joyce and Dennis, J&D Bicycles, with Dan Foley, Riverway Director

One thing that makes the Riverway so special is the regional paved trail system. No other place in the country can boast of more than 300 miles of interconnected trails. It was almost fifty years ago that the first mile of trail was laid in the City of Troy through a partnership with the Miami Conservancy District. This first mile led to many other communities embracing bike trail development of the benefit of us all.  And while the number of miles of trails have grown, so has the number of locally-owned bike shops in our Riverway communities.

If a bike is on your Christmas list, or someone you are buying for – shop local! The bike shops listed below sell new and used and let you test ride them before you buy. They also do repairs and tune-ups, sell parts and accessories, and other bike related items.

To get help choosing a new bike, I visited J&D Bicycles in Troy. The shop owners Joyce and Dennis Ferguson patiently showed me five or six different brands and models, all of which I test rode. I selected the C:1 Hybrid City Bike from Roll Bicycles, an Ohio-based bike manufacturer. I love the bike!

So for all of your bicycle needs, support a local business! Riverway bike shops:

J&D Bicycles

Troy Family Bike Shop

Tipp Cyclery

Carty’s Bike Shop

Whitman’s Bike Way Shop

Spoken Bicycles (Ohio’s only bike shop where you can order a beer while you wait)

Dayton at Work and Play: Ryan Qualls

December 17, 2022 By Bill Franz

After Ryan Qualls posed for me I asked him how he came to be a National Park Service Ranger.
“I started out as a volunteer at Dayton History. Then I started working for the National Park Service as a student employee.
One of my assignments after a few years with the park service was at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in the Outer Banks. Now I manage the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park visitor centers and the interpretive programming.”
I loved hearing that Ryan’s volunteering lead to a great career.

Dec 17th is Wright Brothers Day

December 17, 2022 By Dayton937

A proclamation from President Biden:

On Wright Brothers Day, we celebrate the ingenuity and perseverance of Orville and Wilbur Wright, whose aircraft expanded the limits of human discovery and lifted this Nation to new heights.

From their home in Dayton, Ohio, the Wright Brothers were captivated — “afflicted,” in Wilbur’s words — by the belief that humans could fly.  They researched and experimented, redesigned and repaired, and braved dangerous early trials.  When their Wright Flyer finally took to the skies over Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903, they launched the future of aviation and helped define the American spirit:  bold, daring, innovative, and always asking what is next.

That same spirit has delivered ground-breaking discoveries in American air and space technology for almost 120 years.  America has broken the sound barrier, put a man on the moon, collaborated to create the International Space Station, and achieved powered flight on Mars.  Just last year, we launched the most powerful deep-space telescope ever sent into space and gained a new window into the history of our universe.

We are also carrying on the Wright Brothers’ legacy by always striving for better safety and comfort in air travel.  Our Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is investing $25 billion to renovate airport terminals; upgrade air traffic control facilities; and improve runways, taxiways, and other vital infrastructure that make flying easier and more secure.  We have pushed airlines to rebook travelers’ tickets for free when flights are significantly delayed or canceled, and to disclose fees, like for checked baggage, clearly and up front.  And we are exploring new technologies that can decrease carbon emissions coming from airplanes.

As inheritors of game-changing innovations and torch-bearers of the spirit of American ingenuity, we have so much to be proud of and so much to look forward to.  We can lead the world in the technologies of tomorrow, change the course of human health and disease, tackle the climate crisis, and continue shaping a fairer, more equitable planet.  With shared purpose, unyielding faith in our future, and a drive to make the impossible possible, there is nothing beyond our capacity.  I have never been more optimistic about our Nation’s future –- especially in our skies and in space.

The Congress, by a joint resolution approved December 17, 1963, as amended (77 Stat. 402; 36 U.S.C. 143), has designated December 17 of each year as “Wright Brothers Day” and has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation inviting the people of the United States to observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 17, 2022, as Wright Brothers Day.

2nd Film by Julia Reichert Added to National Film Registry

December 15, 2022 By Dayton937

Every year, the Librarian of Congress names 25 motion pictures that are at least 10 years old and register as “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant.

For a filmmaker to get one of their films in the registry is an honor.  “Growing Up Female” (1971), which Yellow Springs filmmaker Julia Reichert made with her future husband, James Klein, a classmate at Antioch College in Ohio, was selected by the Library of Congress for the National Film Registry in 2011.

Julia, who  won an Academy Award for “American Factory,” a documentary feature about the Chinese takeover of a shuttered automobile plant in Dayton, Ohio, died December 1st after a 4 and 1/2 year fight with cancer.

According to her partner Steven Bogner, “Julia was told, shortly before her death  that UNION MAIDS would be added to the National Film Registry, joining Julia and Jim’s debut film GROWING UP FEMALE on this prestigious list of historically significant works of American cinema. She was grateful and proud.”

The Oscar-nominated “Union Maids,” one of nine documentaries were chosen this year, told the story of three female union workers in the 1930s.

“For the longest time, women’s voices, especially working-class women’s voices, were not respected let alone heard,” co-director Julia Reichert, who died earlier in December from cancer, wrote in a statement. “Documentaries presented men as the experts, the historians, the authorities. We hoped this film would just show you how vital, wise, funny and essential these women’s voices were and are, to the struggles of working people to get a better deal.”

Dayton Air Show Announces New Acts for 2023

December 13, 2022 By Dayton937

Today air show officials announced the return of the U.S. Army Golden Knights and two new acts that will join the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds for the 2023 CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger. The Red Bull Helicopter and MiG-17F Jet Demo will be part of the 48th annual show on July 22 and 23 at the Dayton International Airport.

The Golden Knights, the Army’s official demonstration team, will thrill spectators with their intricate canopy work along with skydiving formations and landings that require extreme precision. Formed in 1959 and based in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, these Ambassadors of the Army represent the skill and professionalism of U.S. soldiers serving all over the world. The 12-member team will travel to Dayton in their C-147A aircraft which will also serve as their jump aircraft. The Golden Knights last appeared in Dayton in 2022.

A 5,300 lbs. helicopter flying upside down? A piece of cake for the Red Bull Helicopter, a MBB BO-105C flown by Aaron Fitzgerald. The multipurpose light twin-engine German helicopter has flexible maneuverability and a fast-climbing performance that allows for rollovers and backflips to keep the audience on their toes. It’s the only helicopter fit for aerobatics to this day. The Red Bull Helicopter last appeared in Dayton in 2011.

The MiG-17F was the primary enemy aircraft during the Vietnam War. Up until the F-16 fighter jets entered service, it was the tightest-turning fighter in the world. The MiG-17F can maintain tight 8G turns and speeds up to 715 mph, climbing to 30,000 feet in only three minutes. It’s one of only a handful of vintage flying jets flying in North America. Pilot Randy Ball, one of North America’s premier jet demonstration pilots has performed in more than 1,500 performances. The MiG-17F last appeared in Dayton in 2013.

“We’re so pleased to continue to bring such phenomenal performers to our 2023 shows to give adults and children alike an unforgettable experience,” said Scott Buchanan, Chairman of the United States Air & Trade Show Board of Trustees, producers of the show. “We’re looking forward to continue adding elite performers to our lineup.”

Air show officials plan to announce more exciting attractions to the air and ground show over the coming months. Tickets are available for purchase online. Beginning mid-summer 2023, discount general admission tickets can be conveniently purchased at over 100 area Kroger stores in the Dayton/Cincinnati region. For more information, visit the show’s website at www.daytonairshow.com.

Dayton Battle of the Bands taking applications through December 12th

December 8, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton Battle of the Bands is taking applications for the 3rd annual competition now through December 12th. The annual winter concert series shines a spotlight on the up-and-coming local talent within a 35-mile radius of Dayton (including Middletown, Springfield, and Greenville).

Dayton Battle of the Bands finalists from 2022

One problem local venues and promoters run into is that there are so many great bands in the Dayton region, it can be challenging to wade through all the songs, samples, and videos that are sent to them on a regular basis. Plus with auto-tune and effects, it’s hard to take those and know what a live show will be like.

The Brightside, Levitt Pavilion, and others use the Dayton Battle of the Bands as an audition space for opening acts for national acts, or even stand-alone shows. This “competition” is much more of a networking event and an opportunity to get on the radar so your band has a better chance at getting booked at future events.  (Clarification – does not need to be a band, solo artists are welcome too!)
The competition starts on January 12, 2023 at The Brightside, and runs through February.  The finale will take place on Saturday, March 11th. Tickets for the public will be made available soon.
Band rules and info can be found here: https://www.daytonbattleofthebands.com/official-rules
The application portal closes on December 12th!

Low-Cost Carrier Announces 2 New Nonstop Routes From CVG

December 7, 2022 By Dayton937

Breeze Airways, which announced in October its arrival at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport with non-stop flights to Charleston, S.C. and San Francisco. Those flights launch  Feb. 8 flying on  on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“Breeze always looks for underserved routes where we can add nonstop flights, low fares and our brand of Seriously Nice service,” Tom Doxey, Breeze Airways’ president said in a release. “Today we’re excited to announce more service from Cincinnati before we’ve even flown our first flight from the airport.”

They’ll be adding routes to  Providence, Rhode Island and Orange County, California for as low as $59 and $109 one-way. The airline will launch the routes on March 30 and flights will be every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

These drastically discounted flights are limited and up-charges will apply for checked or carry on bags.

Rent A Live Christmas Tree This Year!

December 6, 2022 By Dayton937

Want a live tree but don’t want to cut one down? Love the idea of a live potted tree but don’t have space outside to plant your tree?
Deeply Rooted Landscapes  will rent you a tree. Your tree will hang with you for the holidays and then return to the nursery. Your tree buddy may be a holiday tree again or end up in the yard of someone in the community.
The point is, the tree LIVES ON! This is a sustainable, zero-waste option for the holidays. Perfect for apartment dwellers and renters!
After the holidays, the trees return to Deeply Rooted Landscapes, producing oxygen, contributing to the ecosystem, and creating wildlife habitat. Locally grown and raised, their trees are potted early in their lives, and their roots are undisturbed. The result is a healthier, better-looking, and happier tree, losing very few needles while in your home. Their potted trees are Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and White Spruce* (Picea glauca). *Not native to Ohio, but native to North America – fast growing tree that does well in Ohio!
See their Potted Native Christmas Tree Sale at the 2nd Street Market in Dayton. They will be there on  Saturday, December 10th, from 9 am to 3 pm. Trees will be 2 to 3 feet tall in 3-gallon pots. Prices start at $50.
If you are renting a tree, you will pay the full amount. You must return the tree to 2nd Street Market on Friday, December 30th, or Saturday, December 31st. If the tree is determined by DRL to be healthy, half of the paid amount will be returned to you.

Dayton Ballet Barre offers fun holiday tradition with Sugar Plum Tea

December 3, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton Ballet Barre offers fun holiday tradition with Sugar Plum Tea, a children’s tradition before the December 18th matinee performance of the Dayton Ballet’s The Nutcracker. This is the first Tea back since the pandemic shutdown, and organizers are planning a fun comeback event at the Dayton Woman’s Club, which is within walking distance of the Schuster Center.

The Dayton Ballet Barre is the Dayton Ballet’s volunteer booster organization, and one of their signature events is the long-running Sugar Plum Tea. Held prior to one of the matinee performances of the Ballet’s beloved Nutcracker production, it’s become a holiday tradition that families look forward to. Geared towards children and parents / grandparents, the afternoon tea promises to provide many cherished memories.

“We love hosting this children’s event!” Libby Ballengee, the Ballet Barre’s Secretary and past President, shared with us. “It’s like Prom for five-year-olds. We adore seeing all the kid’s sparkly dresses & suits. It’s a really special afternoon, and we’re so happy to be back hosting this after two years off.”

The Tea lasts for 90 min, enough time for to enjoy hot beverages & tea sandwiches, make a craft, learn a short dance from the Sugar Plum Fairy, and hear the story of The Nutcracker under the Christmas Tree. Each moment provides a beautiful photo opportunity against the gorgeous back-drop of the Dayton Woman’s Club.

All children and adults need a ticket to attend. The ticket includes tea party foods (cute sandwiches, fruit, & yummy desserts, with hot beverages including hot chocolate, tea, and coffee. This ticket does not include a ticket to the Dayton Ballet performance. Those are purchased separately through DaytonLive.org.
