Remarkable Jazz Duo Returns to The Brightside!

March 8, 2020 By LIbby Ballengee

I run into lots of folks who have been missing the jazz offerings at Gilly’s, or the listening room vibe at Canal Street Tavern. At The Brightside Music & Event Venue, we are hosting an upcoming performance that is just for those missing those powerful, intimate performances. Jennifer Hartswick & Nicholas Cassarino Duo, are a  truly remarkable jazz duo that you don’t want to miss!

The Brightside is thrilled to host this duo, who are back after popular demand! Last year they moved our audience to tears with their powerful jazz-fusion originals featuring Jennifer’s beautiful voice and trumpet accompaniment, along with Nick’s masterful, and even sexy, guitar work. Blues guitarist Steven Gregory, kicks off this exclusive performance.  He wowed local audiences during the recent Dayton Battle of the Bands, earning himself a spot in the finals.

Jennifer’s live performances are renowned as spontaneous, joyful and contagious. Her natural charisma and sincerity shines through, and each performance is a celebration of musical collaboration. And whether she is wailing on the trumpet or singing an intimate vocal solo, her performance is all part of a single seamless instrument, one that is played not only with astounding technical proficiency, but also with sensitivity, conviction and heart. Hartswick is an original member of the Trey Anastasio Band and has recorded/shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Phish, Christian McBride, Tom Petty, Aaron Neville, Carlos Santana, The Rolling Stones, Big Gigantic, Dave Matthews and countless others.

Nicholas Cassarino was born in Vermont into a musical family. He started singing publicly at age 5 and at age 11 began playing guitar. Through the genres of punk rock, classic rock, and folk he began studying jazz. The doors of jazz opened him up to classical, gospel, soul, hip-hop, funk, and music from around the world. In 2013 he formed his current touring outfit The Nth Power with Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) and Nate Edgar (John Browns Body). They have been touring nationally and internationally since 2014 and have released an ep, full length studio album, live album, and will release a new studio album in the fall of 2018.

Ekoostik Hookah back in Dayton with Subterranean

February 25, 2020 By LIbby Ballengee

Ekoostik Hookah, the original Ohio jam band, returns to Dayton on Friday February 28, 2020 at The Brightside. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED.

For nearly 30 years, əkoostik hookah, Ohio’s original jam band, has been touring and inspiring musicians across the nation. Many of Dayton’s own psychedelic rock bands have been inspired by this talented group, including Subterranean, Dayton’s own up-and-coming powerhouse!

It’s been a few years since əkoostik hookah has performed on a Dayton stage, so it’s particularly exciting to have them back downtown for a show on the big ballroom stage at The Brightside Music & Event Venue on Friday February 28, 2020.

For old fans, seeing Hookah, as they are affectionally known, is a walk down memory late. Founding members, Dave Katz (keys, vocals, acoustic guitar), Steve Sweney (guitar), and longstanding drummer, Eric Lanese, have been the mainstays, providing the foundation and longevity that few acts have been able to maintain. Eric Sargent (guitar, vocals) arrived in 2010 and Matt Paetsch in 2018 (bass).

For new fans, this is an opportunity to rediscover not only one of  Ohio’s  most recognized and influential acts in the touring music scene, it’s also a chance to see the next generation in Subterranean! They approach improvisation with intent, pushing stylistic boundaries with  their  infectious grooves. Each show is truly a unique experience!

HOW TO GO?
When: Friday February 28, 2020. Doors 7:30pm / Music starts at 8:30pm
Where: The Brightside – 905 E 3rd St, Dayton. On site parking available.

Red Star” New Soviet-Era Russian Vodka Bar and Cocktail Lounge Opens in Downtown Dayton

February 24, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Alex Todd, who served as the GM of Proto Buildbar and Chris Wire, owner of Real Art were sitting around having a beer one day and got to talking about what might be next for that space. Chris shared they’d had a lot of fun with Proto, but were thinking after 5 years it might be time for something new.

Chris said they “were brainstorming and felt like craft beers were covered, the Cbar does bourbon better than anyone in the country and then they thought VODKA.  We’d both been watching Chernobyl and from there the ideas just spiraled out of control.  I’d been to a Vodka bar in NYC that was gorgeous and underground and pretty upscale.  But we wanted something much kitschier and fun.”  He went on to describe it as a being lots of leather and velvet, and dark. Hence Red Star, a themed, Soviet-Era Russian Vodka Bar was born.

According to Chris, Red Star, a “Proletarian Pub,” blends the opulence of the Cold War-era Kremlin with the vibe of a straight-forward working-man’s dive bar “in a look only your Ukrainian grandmother could love.”  The Grand Opening will be Friday, February 28th, from 4:00 pm–2:00 am. Unlike Proto Buildbar, this bar will be for those 21 and up.

Wire describes Red Star’s Soviet-era themed-decor as an eclectic mix of vintage Victorian and Mid-Century Modern furnishings dripping in red velvet accompanied by historical Russian photography and Cold War, propaganda-inspired graphics. With 2 bar areas and a mix of low tables, it will have a comfortable feel. Alex Todd will be the general manager and a few familiar favorites and some newbies will make up the staff.

Red Star features a full cocktail bar along and with eight select draft beers, an extensive selection of vodkas, and a rotating selection of more than a dozen house-infused vodkas. Flavored vodkas will include strawberry mint, tomato basil jalapeño, mixed berry, vanilla, espresso, apple pie, cinnamon, and a not-to-be missed pickle-infused vodka cocktail. Flights of the infused vodka will be available.  Come springtime they may event host some food trucks in the parking lot.

Those who may revel in Soviet-era, along with those who enjoy a darned-good dive bar (Pabst will be on draft for just $2.50), and not to exclude the odd Dayton-based Bolshevik—all will enjoy, real (non-electronic) dart boards, a premium sound system, and broad selection of music on vinyl that guests are free to pick and play.

“We’re really pleased to be able to add to the variety and quality of entertainment options that are part of the resurgence of downtown Dayton,” said Wire. “And, in our own way, we are adding to the fabric in this flourishing area of downtown with something that is cool, fun and funny, and a little off-center.”

Boney James Release New Album and Announces Dayton Tour Stop

February 24, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Four-time GRAMMY nominee and multi-platinum saxophonist Boney James has announced plans for a 2020 tour in support of his new album Solid, set to release on April 17 by Concord Records. Solid is Boney James’ seventeenth album and the follow-up to his smash 2017 release Honestly – his eleventh #1 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Album. The Solid Tour 2020 will stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Saturday, June 27th.

“A solid relationship is when someone has your back and will stand by your side no matter what,” explains Boney James about the title of his new album. “Solid is a word that has a few meanings, but this one really resonated with me and became the theme of the record.”

Sometimes, inspiration is slow in coming, evasive and stubborn. Other times, if an artist is very fortunate, it simply flows, the music practically writing itself. That’s how Solid, the latest release from Boney James came to be. “This record really flowed at an unusually quick pace,” Boney says. “There was a lot of positive energy in making this music. Solid is a very upbeat record. As I was writing them, these songs put a smile on my face.”

All of Solid’s eleven tracks were produced and written or co-written by James. Three songs – “Full Effect,” “Tonic” and the title track—were built from licks played at sound-check by touring guitarist Kendall Gilder on the road in support of Honestly. “I said, hey, what’s that riff you’re playing?” James recalls, “And Kendall said, ‘that’s just something I’m messing around with.’ I got my iPhone and recorded them, then took it home and wrote the songs!”

Four other songs were initiated by longtime James collaborator, acclaimed writer/producer Jairus ‘J-Mo’ Mozee (Anderson Paak, Nicki Minaj, Anthony Hamilton). One of those, “Be Here,” was ultimately transformed into Solid’s Adult Urban single featuring special guest Kenny Lattimore, best known for his Top 10 R&B hit “For You.”

Says James, “We met at the Soul Train Awards twenty years ago and he said, ‘Some day we need to work together!’ As I was working on ‘Be Here’, I started to hear his voice in my head. I reached out to him and he wrote and recorded the lyrics. It’s such a romantic song and it really reinforced the theme of the record, strong and positive relationships.”

James crafted many of the song titles (“Fresh Air”, “On The Path”, “Tonic”) to play off this theme, “Similar to my last CD Honestly, this new music is a reaction to how stressful the world feels these days. Music is a respite, it’s always ‘solid’ and it never lets me down.”

Boney James’ personal relationship with music has never been anything but solid. Picking up the sax at age 10 in his native New Rochelle, New York, “I immediately loved it, and it pretty quickly became my favorite thing to do.” By the time he entered his teens, James was gigging with bands, and he turned pro at 19. He apprenticed as a sideman for artists like Morris Day, The Isley Brothers, Teena Marie and many others, touring and doing sessions for seven years before cutting his first solo album in 1992. The independently released Trust led immediately to a major label deal and a string of increasingly successful recordings and nonstop touring.

Now a four-time GRAMMY nominee with four RIAA Gold records and career sales topping three million units, James continues to defy musical genres; A two-time NAACP Award nominee, a Soul Train Award winner and named one of the Top 3 Billboard Contemporary Jazz Artists of the Decade.

James says he’s looking forward to heading out on the road and seeing how the Solid material evolves from night to night. “I love playing live, maybe more than I ever did. A lot of guys get tired of the traveling but it’s still a joy for me every time I go out there and play.”

It’s still a joy to his multitude of fans too. “I try to ‘be there’ for the people who are interested in my music,” says James, “to beSolid in that relationship and to not let anybody down. I often get great compliments from the people that come to my shows, that I ‘never disappoint’ them, and that’s very gratifying to me. That’s what I was trying to express with this title, that sense of character… to stand for something principled.”

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 11:00am on Friday, February 28th at www.Ticketmaster.com and www.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Trace Adkins To Play Fraze!

February 18, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

A Nashville icon for more than two decades, Trace Adkins has made his mark on the country-music industry. 11 million albums sold. Time-honored hit singles. Momentous, fiery and always memorable live performances. GRAMMY nominations. CMT and ACM awards. Nearly 200 million plays on YouTube. Hell, even a slew of movie and TV roles have come the Grand Ole Opry member’s way. But ask Adkins what’s left to prove in his career and the small-town Louisiana native says it’s simple: the itch remains. To create. To collaborate. To continually feel the excitement that comes after whipping up a new song out of thin air and laying it down to tape.

It’s what, after all these years, he says he still craves. “It’s an adrenaline rush and I love it,” says Adkins, “There’s nothing else like that,” the Louisiana native offers. “That is still my favorite thing to do in this business. Go into the studio with just some lyrics and a melody and then let the finest musicians in the world help take it and turn it into something magical. It liberates me. I just dig it!”

Working with some of Nashville’s most respected songwriters, Adkins continues to find ways to connect with his fans through music while recording what he describes as autobiographical songs throughout his career. “Over the years people have asked me ‘How could we get to know you?’ Well, if you really wanted to know who Trace Adkins is go back and listen to the album cuts on the records I’ve done over my career. Those are the songs that reflect where I was in my head at the time I made that record.”

Keith Sweat Live at Rose Music Center

February 10, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

R&B singer/songwriter Keith Sweat is teaming up with SILK and Ginuwine for one night only to perform at Rose Music Center on Saturday, June 6th.

Legend Keith Sweat is a Harlem, N.Y born songwriter/record producer/vocalist/actor/ radio personality, with a career that spans 30+ years of record breaking and trail blazing contributions to the Pop and R&B genre. He is coined the genius behind the “New Jack Swing” phenomenon of the late 1980’s. Keith Sweat’s timely transition to the R&B mecca of Atlanta in 1992 added “label impresario” to his roster of talents. Keith has dominated the Pop and R&B worlds with an indefinable presence. His debut and now classic album Make It Last Forever sold more than three million copies, producing four R&B hit singles, including “I Want Her,” which also landed at #5 on the Pop charts. The album stats also include a nomination for the 1989 Soul Train Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Song of the Year award. Keith Sweat has delivered five straight #1 albums, selling a worldwide total of 25 million records. His self-titled 1996 effort, Keith Sweat, gained quadruple platinum status. His critically acclaimed collaboration with fellow superstars Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill on the double platinum LSG, was launched a decade after he first landed in the music business.

He has thrived as one of Atlanta’s first record industry moguls, building his own recording studio and discovering new artists such as SILK and Kut Klose – signing both multi-platinum groups to his Keia Record label. Sweat has become one of Atlanta’s leading mentors for young talent, its principle purveyor of R&B music. The unflappable Sweat points to his consistency as the key to his success and achievement of a dozen top ten R&B singles including seven #1’s, four top five Pop singles and frequenting Billboards Top Charts.

After being named Favorite Male R&B/Soul Artist by the American Music Awards in 1997, Sweat celebrated his longevity with his 1998’s aptly titled album, Still in the Game. His 2008 album Just Me made waves on radio and at cash registers and endorsed his claims to remain “in the game”. Keith released his tenth studio album Ridin Solo in 2010. This multi-talented artist masters his craft and expounds upon various interests that keep him fresh in the public’s eye. The state of Georgia authenticated Keith Sweat’s extraordinary talent in the music business with a coveted induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

He has appeared on both the Martin show and the Wayans Brothers show, among others, and has starred in a handful of independent movies. Keith Sweat’s initiation into the reality show craze, Keith Sweat’s Platinum House, yielded #1 ranking on the Centric network – of which, he was Creator and Executive Producer.

In his third decade in the spotlight, Sweat has almost become a genre unto himself, his pleading ballads a mainstay of radio’s “Quiet Storm” format. As if in acknowledgement of that, Sweat hosts the #1 nighttime nationally syndicated radio show, “The Sweat Hotel”. The live call-in program boasts 3 million listeners exchanging dialogue with Keith about matters of the heart. Like the steady beat of his up-tempo hits and tantalizing ballads, Keith Sweat, remains relevant – voted #11 on the list of the 20 Greatest R&B/Soul cd’s of all time for his epic album Make It Last Forever by the Georgia Informer magazine. Keith Sweat garners an impressive fan base in the fickle genre of Pop R&B and continues to redefine boundaries.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 11:00am on Friday, February 14th at www.Ticketmaster.com and www.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

John Legend Bigger Love Tour Coming to The Rose

February 6, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

EGOT winner John Legend today announced his Bigger Love Tour will kick-off on August 12 in Dallas and visit more than 25 cities across North America this summer, including a stop in Legend’s home state of Ohio to perform at Rose Music Center on Saturday, September 5th. The War and Treaty will join Legend as support.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 10:00am on Friday, February 14th at www.Ticketmaster.com andwww.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Legend jumpstarted 2020 with the release of his newest song “Conversations In The Dark,” which hit #1 on the overall iTunes songs chart upon its release. The song was featured on NBC’s Award-winning hit television show This Is Us featuring a performance by John on the show.

MTV says, “John Legend has written the world’s sweetest vows on ‘Conversations In The Dark’,” and calls it a “tear-jerker,” while Billboard declares that “Conversations,” is “his romantic new song….[that] details the moments while falling in love.” You can listen to “Conversations in The Dark” HERE.

“Conversations in the Dark” captures the warmth and sweetness of falling in love in the only way that Legend can. The song is a sweet, stripped-down love letter that echoes the quiet conversations that happen between two people when no one else is around.

Legend, the “King of Valentine’s Day,” recently lovingly parodied the “Queen of Christmas” Mariah Carey’s buzzworthy social media video on Twitter. PopSugar says Legend, “posted a hilarious video of him getting in the Valentine’s Day spirit. Taking a note from Mariah Carey, he started the video dressed in festive holiday-season-esque clothes….and eventually woke up to a room decorated with rose petals and hearts as he shamelessly blasted his song ‘Conversations in the Dark.’”

Legend recently won his 11th GRAMMY Award for “Higher” with DJ Khaled and Nipsey Hussle. Legend, Khaled and friends performed the song at the 62ndAnnual GRAMMY Awards in honor of Nipsey, which many lauded one of the most moving highlights including the New York Times calling it one of the “Best” moments of the night. PEOPLE magazine’s reigning “Sexiest Man Alive” is also currently a coach on his third season of NBC’s “The Voice” He won his first season as a coach with his mentee Maelyn Jarmon.

Coming on the heels of the band’s brand new 12th studio albumMiracle Pill [Warner Records], the 29-date tour will kick off on July 23rd and visit illustrious outdoor venues across North America including a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Wednesday, August 5th. Lifehouse and Forest Blakk will provide support for all shows on the run.

Today, the band has also released a vibrant new live concert video for “Autumn Leaves”, a standout track fromMiracle Pill that has been garnering rave reactions from audiences. The performance was filmed at the Kalamazoo State Theater in Kalamazoo, MI on their Fall 2019 headlining tour.

Miracle Pill officially arrived in September 2019 via Warner Records. The album was described as “potentially the biggest Dolls album released to date [Planet Rock]”, as well as one that “easily stands alongside the best of their career [PopMatters].” In addition to “Autumn Leaves,” the engaging and timely album also features numerous other instant-classics such as the smash single “Miracle Pill” and the massive pop anthem “Fearless”, which was added to the LA Dodgers in-stadium playlist last season.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 11:00am on Friday, February 7th atwww.Ticketmaster.com and www.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

ABOUT GOO GOO DOLLS:

Formed in Buffalo, NY during 1986 by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac, Goo Goo Dolls quietly broke records, contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, connected to millions of fans, and indelibly impacted popular music for three-plus decades. Beyond selling 12 million records worldwide, the group garnered four GRAMMY® Award nominations and seized a page in the history books by achieving 14 number one and Top 10 hits at Hot AC—“the most of any artist.” As a result, they hold the all-time radio record for “Most Top 10 Singles.” Among a string of hits, “Iris” clutched #1 on the Hot 100 for 18 straight weeks and would be named “#1 Top 40 Song of the Last 20 Years.” Thus far, A Boy Named Goo [1995] went double-platinum, Dizzy Up The Girl went quadruple-platinum, and Gutterflower [2002] and Let Love In [2006] both went gold as Something for the Rest of Us [2010] and Magnetic [2013] bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. 2016’s Boxes attracted the praise of People and Huffington Post as Noisey, Consequence of Sound, and more featured them. Their music has been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to Leona Lewis. Among many accolades, John received the prestigious “Hal David Starlight Award” in 2008 as well.

Following a sold-out 2018 twentieth anniversary tour in celebration of Dizzy Up The Girl, Goo Goo Dolls wrote and recorded their twelfth full-length album, Miracle Pill [Warner Records]—ignited by the first single and title track “Miracle Pill” and kicking off a bold and bright new era in the process. Miracle Pill arrived on September 13th, 2019 via Warner Records.
