‘Tip Jar’ virtual concert raises funds for hospitality workers

May 29, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

On Saturday, May 30th, Dayton musicians come together in a virtual concert called ‘Tip Jar: A Show of Thanks’ to raise funds for Dayton’s hospitality workers.

The idea stemmed from the staff of Tender Mercy, the chic new underground bar that opened right as the coronavirus shutdown was happening. The team wanted to help fellow workers who are struggling financially from lack of income.

The Kiwis, Photo by Libby Ballengee

Led by co-owner Chris Dimmick, the team partnered with the Dayton Foundation and the Ohio Restaurant Association to set up a special fund for Montgomery and Greene County workers.

Dimmick and team also partnered with three local production companies to film the pre-produced show: Ambient Productions, Sound Valley Dayton, and Venus Child Productions. The filming occurred over 3 days and 4 locations: The Brightside, Ned Peppers, Tender Mercy, and Toxic Brewery. Fourteen local acts took to stages in empty rooms to film their favorite songs.

Cincinnati Native Nominated for an Independent Music Award

April 18, 2020 By Mitch Miley

The supremely talented up-and-coming singer-songwriter Olivia Frances will look to add another award to her already impressive collection of accolades. Musical from a young age, Frances started playing piano at age six and composed her first song on guitar at age 12. Her dedication from such young age has paid off by having written over 300 songs. Frances credits Fleetwood Mac, Bon Iver and Kacey Musgraves as her musical inspirations.

This month, Music Resource Group announced the Nominees for The 18th Annual Independent Music Awards (IMAs). Nominations in 100+ Music, Video and Design categories were awarded to an eclectic roster of established and emerging talent from around the globe.

Frances is nominated in the Story Song Category for “The Bee & the Rose” a sweeping, environmentally-driven song off Orchid (2019), her latest bouquet of songs and stories. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette describes the album as “irrepressibly sweet — and eminently likable.” Written with the talented Nashville-based songwriter Michael Astrachan and produced by the distinguished Pat Lassiter, “The Bee & the Rose” reminds listeners of the natural beauty of the world and uses it on stage as a catalyst to discuss the current bee crisis.

Frances is no stranger to the Independent Music Awards. In 2018, she won the VOX Pop Love Song Category and the awards ceremony took place at Lincoln Center. Frances is a multi-award-winning artist, placing 1st in the Singer-Songwriter Category at the 2018 New England Songwriting Competition and winning Best Pop Song of the Year at the 2017 Ohio Music Awards.

Musical legends Lucinda Williams, Steven Van Zandt, Ellis Paul and Jonatha Brooke are nominated alongside Frances. The winning projects will be selected by influential judging panels including: Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan, Robert Smith, Ziggy Marley, KT Tunstall, and many more indie creatives, top recording artists and industry influencers.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The 18th annual Independent Music Awards ceremony originally scheduled for June in New York City will proceed as an online showcase for this year’s top-ranked artists and music projects. Now in its 18th year, The Independent Music Awards honors artistry and daring rather than streams and social reach, and celebrates everything that makes indie music authentic and unique.

Daughtry 2020 Tour At The Rose in August

April 13, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

GRAMMY® Award-nominated and multi-platinum selling band Daughtry has announced 2020 tour dates with special guest The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band. The tour will include a stop in Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Thursday, August 20th.

As the frontman for the band bearing his name, Chris Daughtry has become one of the most visible and consistent rock & roll torchbearers of the 21st Century. Daughtry has released five albums, all of which reached the Billboard Top Ten and have combined sales over 8 million copies in the U.S.

Daughtry’s self-titled debut was the best-selling album of 2007, which contained four Top Twenty hit singles including the Grammy-nominated smash “It’s Not Over.” Leave This Town also reached Number One in 2009, while 2011’s Break the Spell was certified gold. 2013’s Baptized, featured the platinum-selling “Waiting for Superman,” which the singer points to as a turning point in his songwriting.

“It was a nice hybrid of where we had been and where we’re going, and it opened my eyes a bit,” says Daughtry. “Everything was so serious and doom and gloom, and ‘You broke my heart,’ but we never saw ourselves as those people outside the music — onstage we were always joking around. That helped me wrap my head around the fact that we can be light-hearted and still be us. And that really changed the way I approach the songs in general.”

Daughtry and his band have been performing together for over a decade. “Like anything with a ten year relationship, you know more about each other than you do most of your family,” says Chris Daughtry. “It’s a love-hate thing — you get sick of being around them, but after two weeks at home you’re ready to get back out on the road and do it again. The fan base really keeps us alive. That’s the key ingredient to keeping a band together — that’s the gasoline, and without it you can’t run.”

One thing that has kept the fire burning for Daughtry has been the need to constantly challenge himself creatively. This kind of ambition has also extended to the work of Daughtry the band. “We always try to push ourselves outside of the familiar parameters,” says the singer. “If it’s anything like we’ve done before, then it’s not good enough for the record.

“If you look at the groups doing it for twenty-plus years,” he continues, “they were always changing their style, testing the water, going off the rails from what people expected — Zeppelin, Elton, Prince, they never did the same record twice. So there’s always that effort to push yourself as an artist, but I never want to abandon that sense of melody and sense of something that people can grab onto, whether it conjures up memories or helps them through a tough time. That’s what I love about music, when it makes me feel something.”

More than ten years after launching with a massive splash, Chris Daughtry claims that he and the band have grown the most on stage, and that it’s altered his whole sense of his work. “When we first came out, I’d only known what I’d seen,” he says. “I didn’t know how to be vulnerable, with no pretense. Now it’s walk onstage and, especially in our acoustic shows, just be flat-out honest and open. It’s really helped me realize that’s actually what fans want — they want 100 percent honesty and feeling like they got to know you better.”

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, April 17th at www.Ticketmaster.com andwww.Rosemusiccenter.com. Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

Discover Classical and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Join Together to Broadcast Concert Night with the DPO Every Saturday

April 7, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Discover Classical and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra are pleased to announce that every Saturday night beginning on Saturday, April 11 at 8:00 pm, Discover Classical will broadcast a previously recorded concert from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra for the southwest Ohio region to tune in and enjoy from the comfort of their homes. In this unprecedented time when concert halls are closed, Discover Classical and the Dayton Philharmonic are thrilled to partner together to bring the joy of music and maybe a little hope back into the lives of the greater Dayton community.

“The music of our Dayton Philharmonic is so important to the cultural life of our community,” said Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman. “So it’s a particular shame that we can’t be playing live music to lift people’s spirits, expose them to beauty, and give them hope now, when we all need it so much. These concerts from the DPO and DPAA archives are, I suppose, the next best thing until we can once again all be together in person.”

“If there is a silver lining to be found in the current turmoil surrounding the coronavirus, perhaps it’s that we will recognize and embrace the things that we sometimes took for granted, something as simple as sharing a common musical experience,” said Shaun Yu, President and CEO of Discover Classical. “It is my hope that these concerts will remind audiences of what a treasure we have in our Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and what we have to look forward to…until we can all be together again.”

Concert Night with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra will air Saturday evenings at 8 pm on Discover Classical 88.1FM WDPR Dayton/ 89.9FM WDPG Greenville/ 89.1FM WUSO Springfield, and online at discoverclassical.org.

The series will begin with Neal Gittleman’s ten favorite concerts from the last five seasons. This new series kicks off this Saturday, April 11, 2020 at 8:00 pm with a broadcast of the previously recorded first Masterworks concert of the 2018-2019 season entitled Pictures at an Exhibition, featuring guest violinist Yevgeny Kutik.
