TV Show Filmed in Springfield Airs Tonight

December 14, 2022 By Dayton937

This past May and June The Greater Dayton Film Commission (FilmDayton) worked with an LA production company that was shooting a tv pilot around Springfield.  As it often happens, the commission is working blind, not fully aware of what the production will be and with a non-disclosure act, that does not allow them to talk about the project until the production is ready to share the information publicly.  They use the filmmakers vision and their contacts  to help them secure  the appropriate spots.  One of the locations they secured for them was CO-Hatch.

Tonight, (Dec 14th) ABC, Disney and John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Company will debut the pilot filmed this past June. Here’s how they describe the show:

“For the last 13 years, chorus director David Brown has brought together complete strangers and healed communities by asking them to simply join a chorus. In this inspirational one-hour special, EGOT winner John Legend is calling upon David to bring his magic to his hometown of Springfield, Ohio. Will David be able to transform a fractured community into a powerhouse chorus in just one week? Audiences will see the magic of what happens when you invite complete strangers to sing together in this all-new special.”

While we’re excited to see “Finding Harmony” FilmDayton is even more excited to share the economic impact a shoot like this brings to the region.  They spent $58, 276 on hotel rooms for their crew of 55, rented $16, 381 of vehicles, contracted over $18,000 in catering and rented about $30,000 in local equipment.

Watch the pilot of the show on ABC’s Facebook page.

FilmDayton’s mission is to promote the art, craft and business of film in the region.  You can support FilmDayton by becoming a member.  Follow them on Facebook, where they often list cast and crew calls.  List your property as a possible film location in their database.

December 13, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Suwapat “Sue” Whitted, the owner of Thai Kitchen and Thai Table has confirmed they’ve outgrown their  Kingsridge location they’ve been in since 2017.  Early this month they introduced a new logo:

She describes it on their facebook page: “The custom hand lettering evokes a personal and exciting flavor as well as Asian art to match our Thai cuisine. The Tuk Tuk is an iconic vehicle in Thailand and is now our new icon! We’ll be using this Tuk Tuk moving forward on several different items so when you see this Tuk Tuk think ‘Thai Kitchen!”

They’ve posted signage at their new location, which will  at 2335 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Miami Twp. across from the Dayton Mall, where Rusty Taco closed this past October.

Whitted says they are currently waiting on permits from Montgomery County and will be doing some remodeling and hope to open in January of 2023.
She is also currently working on opening

Dayton Air Show Announces New Acts for 2023

December 13, 2022 By Dayton937

Today air show officials announced the return of the U.S. Army Golden Knights and two new acts that will join the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds for the 2023 CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger. The Red Bull Helicopter and MiG-17F Jet Demo will be part of the 48th annual show on July 22 and 23 at the Dayton International Airport.

The Golden Knights, the Army’s official demonstration team, will thrill spectators with their intricate canopy work along with skydiving formations and landings that require extreme precision. Formed in 1959 and based in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, these Ambassadors of the Army represent the skill and professionalism of U.S. soldiers serving all over the world. The 12-member team will travel to Dayton in their C-147A aircraft which will also serve as their jump aircraft. The Golden Knights last appeared in Dayton in 2022.

A 5,300 lbs. helicopter flying upside down? A piece of cake for the Red Bull Helicopter, a MBB BO-105C flown by Aaron Fitzgerald. The multipurpose light twin-engine German helicopter has flexible maneuverability and a fast-climbing performance that allows for rollovers and backflips to keep the audience on their toes. It’s the only helicopter fit for aerobatics to this day. The Red Bull Helicopter last appeared in Dayton in 2011.

The MiG-17F was the primary enemy aircraft during the Vietnam War. Up until the F-16 fighter jets entered service, it was the tightest-turning fighter in the world. The MiG-17F can maintain tight 8G turns and speeds up to 715 mph, climbing to 30,000 feet in only three minutes. It’s one of only a handful of vintage flying jets flying in North America. Pilot Randy Ball, one of North America’s premier jet demonstration pilots has performed in more than 1,500 performances. The MiG-17F last appeared in Dayton in 2013.

“We’re so pleased to continue to bring such phenomenal performers to our 2023 shows to give adults and children alike an unforgettable experience,” said Scott Buchanan, Chairman of the United States Air & Trade Show Board of Trustees, producers of the show. “We’re looking forward to continue adding elite performers to our lineup.”

Air show officials plan to announce more exciting attractions to the air and ground show over the coming months. Tickets are available for purchase online. Beginning mid-summer 2023, discount general admission tickets can be conveniently purchased at over 100 area Kroger stores in the Dayton/Cincinnati region. For more information, visit the show’s website at www.daytonairshow.com.

BUFFALO TRACE ANTIQUE COLLECTION

Fans of extra-aged and uncut, unfiltered whiskies can rejoice! Buffalo Trace Distillery is releasing its full lineup of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, including the triumphant return of perennial favorite, George T. Stagg.

The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection was introduced more than two decades ago, and remains one of the most anticipated annual releases in the category of whiskey. The five ensemble whiskies utilize three distinct mash bills from Buffalo Trace Distillery: rye mash bill #1, wheat mash bill, and straight rye mash bill. Aged and proofed at the pinnacle of their taste profile set by the distilling and lab team experts at Buffalo Trace, this collection is available only once a year.

EAGLE RARE 17 YEAR-OLD

This 101 proof whiskey was distilled in the spring of 2005 and barrels were aged in warehouses H, K, and L. This bourbon has a nose with a hint of tobacco, chocolate covered cherries and a touch of oak, followed by caramel, vanilla bean, dark chocolate and oak on the palate, yielding to a full-bodied finish of baking spice, vanilla, and butterscotch.

GEORGE T. STAGG

Last year, Buffalo Trace opted not to release its uncut, unfiltered 15-year-old George T. Stagg bourbon because it did not meet the usual lofty standards for the Stagg brand. This year, the 2007 Stagg barrels showed up strong with the classic Stagg presence: full of maturity, balance, and flavor, and at a delightfully hefty proof of 138.7 (its highest since 2016).

Created in 2002 at the request of a fan for a well-aged barrel strength whiskey, George T. Stagg bourbon is well respected amongst bourbon connoisseurs and spirit judges. This year’s offering was distilled in the spring of 2007, making it 15 years and five months old at bottling. The proof is 138.7, the highest proof for this whiskey in the past six years. This year’s barrels were aged in warehouse K. Tasting notes for this bourbon call out toasted pecan and chocolate sauce on the nose, a rich blend of baking spice, vanilla, and cherry pie on the palate, and a robust finish of black coffee, molasses, and oak.

SAZERAC RYE 18 YEAR-OLD

This Kentucky straight rye whiskey release symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans. The famed Sazerac Coffee House, founded in 1850, began using rye in place of French brandy in its signature cocktail. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born.

This is the whiskey that started it all, notable for its mellow spice and dry sweetness that jazz dances lightly on the palate. A rich nose of orange peel, lemon zest, and molasses anchors a bold blend of black pepper, coriander seeds, and maple syrup in the flavor profile before a well-rounded finish with mint, tobacco leaf, and oak.

THOMAS H. HANDY SAZERAC RYE WHISKEY

Named for the New Orleans bartender who first used rye whiskey in the Sazerac Cocktail, this uncut and unfiltered straight rye whiskey is bottled directly from the barrel, just as it was over a century ago.

This year’s Handy was distilled in the spring of 2016; aged in warehouses I, L, and M and weighs in at a hearty 130.9 proof, the highest proof for this whiskey since 2012. Full of rich flavors, this edition of the authentic American rye whiskey offers a nose with floral notes and tones of anise, marmalade, and meringue, followed by a palate of baking spice, a burst of orange peel, subtle dark chocolate, and a long finish of cinnamon, praline, and candied orange.

WILLIAM LARUE WELLER BOURBON

The Antique Collection’s uncut, unfiltered, wheated recipe bourbon is hand-bottled at barrel proof using a production method pioneered by its namesake. A Kentucky-based distiller, W.L. Weller became known in 1849 as the first to produce straight bourbon using wheat, instead of the typical rye grain, in the mashbill.

This year’s release was distilled in the spring of 2010 and barrels were aged in warehouses C, K, and N, and registers at 124.7 proof. Fragrant scents of toasted coconut, butterscotch, and caramel are followed by a touch of mint, and tones of dark cherry and molasses, on the palate as it builds to a full-bodied finish composed of leather, nutmeg, toffee, and vanilla.

VAN WINKLE COLLECTION

To the delight of whiskey enthusiasts everywhere, the time has come for Buffalo Trace Distillery’s annual release of all five Van Winkle whiskey expressions. This year marks a special milestone as it is the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the Van Winkle family and Buffalo Trace Distillery. In 2002, the Van Winkles entered into an agreement with Buffalo Trace to produce, age, and bottle all its whiskeys, entrusting its wheated mashbill exclusively to the distilling team at Buffalo Trace to continue the family legacy started more than 125 years prior.

Van Winkle bourbons are crafted with Pappy’s original “wheated” recipe. Distilling with corn, barley, and wheat allows the whiskey to age more gracefully giving it a softer, smoother taste. This time-honored aging process produces some of the most sought-after bourbons in the world.

OLD RIP VAN WINKLE 10 YEAR

This straight bourbon whiskey is bottled as close to barrel proof as possible with just a splash of Kentucky limestone water, added after emptying the barrels, to round out the aging process.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year is a big, bold, 107 proof bourbon that has great balance considering its high proof and robust flavor. A sweet vanilla nose, redolent of caramel, pecan, and oak wood notes, plays nice with a smooth, mellow flavor consisting of robust wheat, cherries, and oak and featuring a long, smoky wheat finish with hints of fruit, spice, and oak tannins.

VAN WINKLE SPECIAL RESERVE 12 YEAR

Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year is an enticingly sweet, full-bodied whiskey lovingly described by some as “nectar-y.” The 12 years of aging and medium proof of 90.4 come together just right for an exceedingly pleasant pour.

The overall impression is smooth and decadent; this fine bourbon can compete with any excellent cognac as an after-dinner drink. Highlighted by subtle aromas of dried mango, cocoa, fruit, and spiced peach, the tastes of honey, oak, and tobacco dance on the palate before taking a bow with a balanced, dry finish that has a lingering tingle.

PAPPY VAN WINKLE’S FAMILY RESERVE 15 YEAR

Crafted according to the exclusive Van Winkle family wheated recipe, this bourbon remains undisturbed for 15 years to age in deep-charred heavy oak barrels, untouched by human hands.

Then, at long last, it is specially selected from these barrels.

The 15 Year emerges as an unbelievably opulent 107 proof bourbon that takes wood and distillate to its absolute pinnacle. The elegant and sweet aroma, with hints of caramel corn and vanilla, escalates to a big flavor of leather, oak, and complex fruitiness and a finish smoothed by notes of spice and oak tannins.

PAPPY VAN WINKLE’S FAMILY RESERVE 20 YEAR

Few other bourbons can stand 20 years of aging, but this bourbon does it with style. Aged 20 years and bottled at 90.4 proof for a remarkably smooth and rich profile, there’s a reason it’s the #1 rated Bourbon Whiskey in the world with a 99 out of 100 rating by the World Spirits Championship.

Pappy Van Winkle was a true original and, like its namesake, this bourbon whiskey is full of character. The aromas and flavors are endlessly complex where each sip reveals something novel to discover. The aromatics boast impressive range: intense, tantalizing, and smooth with a citrus zest note. The sophisticated flavor profile comes in waves with sherry notes, dried fruits, and vanilla. The finish is long and elegant with layer upon layer of nuance.

PAPPY VAN WINKLE’S FAMILY RESERVE 23 YEAR

This very rare, limited edition bourbon takes generations of distilling know-how to produce. Only the most careful and intensive distilling method can be used to create a whiskey as special as this one. Barrels for the Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year were carefully selected from the heart of the warehouse to be bottled into one of the oldest bourbon offerings available in the world.

This signature whiskey is considered best enjoyed neat, as you will not want to dilute this unique 96 proof experience. The forefront aromas of caramel and cream mingle with soft notes of oak, nuts, and leather, cresting to a sweet (but not cloying) taste composed of vanilla, maple, and honey joined by complementary flavors of citrus and spice, culminating in a lengthy, oaky finish that echoes the earlier flavors as well.

Doritos® Super Bowl Ticket Giveaway

December 10, 2022 By Dayton937

Doritos® is taking its triangle-shaped brand icon to Another Level® once again by encouraging fans to display their bold self-expression in the form of a triangular haircut and to #NameThatTriangle.

In addition to weekly prizes, one lucky winner could win tickets to Super Bowl LVII

Inspired by Buffalo Bills linebacker, 2x Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl 50 Most Valuable Player Von Miller and his own triangular haircut, which caught viewers’ attention earlier this football season, #NameThatTriangle is a national social contest that champions the power of triangles and rewards fans who adopt the style and come up with a clever label for their new ‘do. Plus, Miller is someone who understands that the triangle is a shape that goes beyond the connection of three lines and becomes a symbol of strength, change and uninhibited expression.

“Triangles have always represented a path to enlightenment and revelation to me, and it’s no secret Doritos are the ultimate triangles,” said Von Miller. “As a symbol that directs energy and power, the crunch, the shape, and the taste of Doritos gives me, and people everywhere, that extra boost to be bold.”

“Doritos is known for elevating far beyond the snack aisle and into cultural moments, and we’re privileged that snackers think of Doritos when they encounter triangles everywhere,” said Stacy Taffet, senior vice president of marketing at Frito-Lay North America. “When Von debuted his daring and personalized triangle hairstyle, it inspired us to further connect with football fans and encourage them to take on the swagger that comes with the iconic style.”

Now through January 15, 2023 those with a triangle-inspired haircut can simply submit a photo or video of their new hairstyle along with their proposed name of the haircut using #NameThatTriangle and #Entry on Twitter or Instagram for the chance to score two tickets to the Super Bowl LVII.

Additionally, every week during the contest, Doritos will also select the top entry from that week to be featured on Doritos’ Instagram. The five weekly winners could also win an autographed Von Miller helmet and a Triangle Hair Kit to help maintain their cut.

Dayton Battle of the Bands taking applications through December 12th

December 8, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton Battle of the Bands is taking applications for the 3rd annual competition now through December 12th. The annual winter concert series shines a spotlight on the up-and-coming local talent within a 35-mile radius of Dayton (including Middletown, Springfield, and Greenville).

Dayton Battle of the Bands finalists from 2022

One problem local venues and promoters run into is that there are so many great bands in the Dayton region, it can be challenging to wade through all the songs, samples, and videos that are sent to them on a regular basis. Plus with auto-tune and effects, it’s hard to take those and know what a live show will be like.

The Brightside, Levitt Pavilion, and others use the Dayton Battle of the Bands as an audition space for opening acts for national acts, or even stand-alone shows. This “competition” is much more of a networking event and an opportunity to get on the radar so your band has a better chance at getting booked at future events.  (Clarification – does not need to be a band, solo artists are welcome too!)
The competition starts on January 12, 2023 at The Brightside, and runs through February.  The finale will take place on Saturday, March 11th. Tickets for the public will be made available soon.
Band rules and info can be found here: https://www.daytonbattleofthebands.com/official-rules
The application portal closes on December 12th!

Sleigh Rye’d and The Return of ‘Season’s Greetings!’

December 7, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

Who doesn’t love an immersive, family-friendly, holiday cabaret with adult beverages on-hand? I can’t think of a person! With that in mind it is time for the Season’s Greetings Cabaret at the PNC Arts Annex! I had the opportunity to interview one of the stars of the show about the return, Philip Drennen. It went something like this:

Josh:  So, you are at it again. Bringing joy and laughter to the PNC Arts Annex. Y’know last year, we had a hoot! What can we expect this year?

Deron Bell

Philip: Well, we are giving you some fun music this season. You will recognize some of the traditional songs in their traditional format, but we always like to ‘soul’ things up with the help of Deron Bell and the Melody Makers. They have that great sound people love.

Josh:  I remember! Some of us even got up dancing for a bit. Any of that?

Philip:  For sure. You know the way the seating is? This year  it is 100% Cabaret Style, you are literally part of the show. It lends itself to more interaction and more fun. I’m sure there will be a couple dancers!

Josh: And Prancers,,,,and Vixens. Anyway. It’s you and Gina Handy again…right? I requested ‘Merry Christmas, Darling’ last year and she KILLED IT! (Yes, you can request!)

Gina Handy

Philip:  It is! So, it is Gina, Deron, Daniel and Mark. Just like last year. It’s such a great combination. Gina, once again, has written a song to reflect the theme of the show. That was great fun last year as well.  AND, we will have our mailbox where people can request their favorites as we perform! You have any songs you are thinking of asking to hear this year, Josh?

Josh: Ok, so let me say first, I’m interviewing you…and yes, I do! You know that crazy version of ‘Jingle Bells’ Streisand does….I want you, Gina or anyone you can find to do it. It’s so silly, and uplifting! Now, back to the concert. People want specifics. How long is the show? Are there drinks? Snacks? Parking? and of course, how much?

Sleigh Rye’d

Philip: In order…here we go….The show is about 90 minutes in length. We take breaks so people can mingle and grab our signature drink ‘The Sleigh Rye’d!’ Get it…RYE! Whiskey.

Josh: I get it and I’ll get at least one. Thank God for UBER!

Philip: Right! I’m sure they will have little snack items. There is plenty of parking at the Schuster garage. The admission is $25. I really think people will have a ball. We Need a Little Christmas!

Philip Drennen

Josh:  I see whatcha did there! All of you are local celebrities. I know that has to be a major draw as well!

Philip:  Well, as you know, TheatreLab is my second home these days. Gina has performed with Human Race and runs the Magnolia Theater. Deron and the Melody Makers are selling out the Levitt Pavilion…so yeah, people will recognize at least one of us! And speaking of local, some of the arrangements we are doing come from Springfield native, John Legend!

Josh:  Shout-out my hometown!! Hey Springfield! Well, my friend you know I adore you and look forward to the big Cabaret party! Anything else you’d like to share?

Philip:  Just so glad things are a lot more normal this year! (We were all masked last year.) I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Please, join us for the fun 12/8 – 12/11!

Josh:  Thank you Philip! Happiest Holidays!

Details?

The Show Runs 12/8 – 12/11 (Thu-Sun.) with showtimes at 7:30pm. There is one matinee on 12/10 (Sat.) at 2pm.
