The Beauty of Boudoir

August 30, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

During my career as a makeup artist there have been few things as rewarding and yet questioned than boudoir photography. I have been in the beauty industry for over ten years and what orginally attracted me to it was both my early career in the theater business and retro/pin up style. When I began in the boudoir business almost 6 years ago with Dayton photographer Tracy Abston, I knew this was where I wanted to be and also wanted to get the stigma that boudoir is anything less than tasteful. It never comes as a surprise that when I tell someone I do makeup for a boudoir studio they look at me like I work in porn! Boudoir is not porn and it is also not glamour shots lol.

Boudoir photography is nothing new to the world. Since the beginning of time we have been obsessed with capturing soft curves, swells, skin, and general beauty of a female in relaxed poses capturing the attention of not only men, but also other women. The female form is a curiosity, and a beauty to withhold in and of itself. The resurgence of boudoir has taken off once again the last five years. Women from all walks of life have once again started celebrating the female form. Many women do this for a gift for someone but most times it is a gift to themselves. It most circles it is now seen as perfectly acceptable to do these photos and not only that but it is a sought after service.

What makes boudoir so beautiful is not only the actual art of the photography but how it can affect a client who comes in. Women do these sessions for multiple reasons; weight-loss, a recent divorce, a loss of self esteem, new boobs, a wedding or anniversary present or even to remember themselves in a certain way.  These sessions are not a one time thing, once women see themselves in this new image they always want to come back for another one and I can personally attest to that! The beauty of boudoir is that it can change a person. As women we are constantly judging ourselves and expecting to look a certain way. Our stomachs will never be flat enough, our thighs small enough or lips full enough. We are our own worst enemies. Not only do we constantly obsess about our looks but so many women lose themselves over the years. We have had so many women come in who have put themselves on the backburner for years in order to make other people happy whether in their personal lives or at work. Boudoir is about bringing that woman back and letting her see that she still has it in her!

There are so many memorable women that I have had the the pleasure of working with but there a few that really stand out as what boudoir is about.

Miss A

Miss A is very dear to my heart we nearly had to beg her to come in after she tried backing out but her daughter talked her into it. She was turning 50 and had a very rough few years with family issues and losing herself in general. Her daughter had recently been diagnosed with a horrible disease and Miss A was really having a rough go at life. The funny thing about her is that she is not only absolutely beautiful but this is also a woman who has biked across Ohio in a day, ran marathons and dedicated her spare time to children in need! This is a woman who had so much to give that literally forgot to give back to herself. There are no words to describe her reaction when she looked in the mirror at herself in fact when we heard the silence we knew….it was a good thing she was waterproofed 🙂 She said she had never felt so beautiful in her entire life. The smile in her pictures brought her back to life and you could see the woman she had lost. I can only hope that on days where she is feeling down about herself that she will look at her pictures and see the woman that she is. Beautiful. Strong. Deserving.

Miss D

Miss D was another woman who came in for a very different reason. She was in late forties and had recently been diagnosed with a disease that would eventually cripple her within 5 years. She came in to the boudoir studio to have pictures made for both her husband and for her child who was under the age of 10. She wanted her child to remember as being beautiful and healthy rather than sickly. She was reserved and did her photos wearing jeans and a tshirt in the courtyard but by the end she had an inner diva in her that produced some stunning sexy photos! Once Miss D let her inner model come out she was amazing. I often think of her and wonder how she is doing. For her, boudoir was about preserving a moment in time that she felt beautiful and wasnt thinking about what the future would bring. Miss D’s photos showed a woman who was living for the moment and doing a fabulous job at it!

More Boudoir reactions:

“Thank you so much for my sneak-peak!! I have been nervously but anxiously checking my e-mail repeatedly over the past two weeks!! I would literally jump every time my e-mail chime on my phone went off. When I finally saw the e-mail from you I quickly scrolled down to the photos and I was in complete shock. I can’t believe the woman in the photos is me. I’ve looked at them ten times already and I’m still amazed. You have such an unbelievable talent which is not limited to actual photography. You’re amazing at what you do and how you make your clients feel. I remember thinking after my session that I had never felt so comfortable in my own skin nor had I ever felt better about myself than I did at that moment. The experience of the session alone was well worth it and did so much for me and I love that I will have the photos to remind me. I can’t say thank you enough and I absolutely can not wait to give my husband his 1st anniversary gift!!”

“Although it’s been over a year since my session and my little black book wedding gift to my husband, the pictures are still making quite the impact! I originally wanted to get boudoir pictures done because my husband was deploying overseas …for the military, but it was perfect timing to give the book to him as a wedding present. I was just as nervous when he was opening it as I was when I got the e-mail from you with password to the album. But the look on his face made me feel as happy, sexy and confident as I felt when I looked at them for the first time. Anytime I am having feeling bad about myself or having a “fat” day, one glimpse at those images and remember the look on my hubby’s face. How could I feel bad knowing what he sees and how looking at me makes him feel? Thank you for helping me create the perfect wedding present and for giving me the confidence to just be me!”
“When I found out that my husband was searching the internet for a boudoir photo session for me, I sort of panicked. I’m 63 after all and why would it be a good thing to have photos of me at this stage in my life? But, after reading the information for ‘blush boudoir’, I agreed to do this for him. After my photo shoot, I felt like a new woman! We love the coffee table books and as I age, we will look back on this experience with a smile on our faces. I am so glad I did this!”
Boudoir is not about how you think you should look. Boudoir is about who you are as a woman and the woman that you should be celebrating today. You dont have to be a size 0 and you certaintly dont have to wait to celebrate something in your life to do one of these sessions. Boudoir is about being comfortable in your own skin and taking time for yourself. If you give or show these pictures to someone then that is just an added bonus. This is about you and how you see yourself. I will warn you however, that these sessions are addicting and you will probably be back for more 🙂

Eyebrows… Sisters not Twins.

August 21, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The first thing most people notice about you will be your face and as a makeup artist I notice all the little things. Now to all my friends reading this dont think I stare at you and pick you apart lol. One of the biggest things I notice that often goes over looked are eyebrows. Yeah you know the lines of fur above your eyes? Many people dont realize just how important they are to framing your face. I have done makeovers on women who are shocked by the transformation just by changing their eyebrows. There are tons of ways to manage brow fur these days and along with that are price points for every budget. I hear all the time that “I cant afford brow waxing” “my skin is too sensitive” “it hurts” Ladies there are no excuses these day and there is way for everyone to have perfectly manicured brows for a mere cost.

Plucking- Tried and True?

I cannot and have never plucked my own eyebrows or anyone elses.  In my opinion it is painful and unecessary. With that being said I have several friends and clients who do pluck and do a wonderful job. It’s just not for me. Here are a few tips:

  1. Exfoliate and apply teething gel for pain. Brush brows up and out.
  2. Situate yourself near a window with light pouring in or under a bright light with a good mirror (magnifying mirrors are best, but be sure and flip it over to see your overall effect in the regular mirror).
  3. Make sure you have a good pair of tweezers with a slanted edge. I recommend Tweezerman.
  4. Tweeze hairs in the direction they grow. Don’t grab too many hairs at a time. You can hold skin taut as you pluck.
  5. You can start anywhere, but I usually tweeze the area under my arch first, then I move above the brow and I clean up in between my brows last. It’s a myth that brows should never be tweezed from above. You want both the bottoms and tops to be smooth. So be careful, but tweeze the top AND the bottom.
  6. The best brows have a slight arch. To find yours, take a long eyeshadow brush or pencil and hold it parallel to the outside edge of the colored part of your eye (the iris). Where the brush meets the brow is where the highest part of your brow should be. Tweeze the hairs underneath the arch.
  7. The space between your brows should be equal to, or a little wider than, your eyes. To find where your brow should go, take the brush or pencil and hold it parallel to the side of your nose. Where the brush meets your brow is where your brow should begin. Tweeze the strays in between.
  8. Stop every few hairs to step back and look at the job you’re doing. If you overpluck, you’re stuck. Unlike most hairs on your body, your brows won’t always grow back once they’re yanked. In fact I have seen many women who’s do not come back 🙁
  9. Once you’re done plucking, you can apply aloe vera gel, which will calm the redness right away.

Waxing Vs. Threading the Debate

When it comes to eyebrow grooming, many ladies debate which method is best threading or waxing. Threading is an ancient technique where a string is used to remove hair. Whereas waxing, Uses a wax-based resin that is placed on the skin and then rips off the unwanted hair.

Many women have extremely sensitive skin and are more prone to threading. Threading has little to minimum contact with the skin. Waxing however, tugs at skin when the hair is removed, and causes irritated sensitive skin making it turn pink to extremely red. Threading solely uses a string to remove the hair, unlike waxing that contains resins and preservatives; artificial fragrances and ingredients that can be a problem for sensitive skin. Sometimes having an allergic reaction is mistaken as sensitivity. Waxes are often based on a certain ingredient like: lavender, tea tree, chocolate, acaí berry and the list goes on and on. With threading eyebrows there’s no need to worry.

So who should wax?

Wax works well for skin that is not overly sensitve and should always be done by a professional. It shoud not be overly painful. Technicians will often go through after the wax and pluck unwanted hairs they were missed. You may have some slight redness and swelling but it should only last a couple hours. Here is what you can expect at your appointment:

An upscale salon or spa will lead you into a private room onto a facial bed where you will lay down, and they will wrap hair in a towel or push it back with a head band. A bright facial and magnifying light will be turned on to see the brows closely. Some salons that mostly specialize in hair services, simply clip hair back and do the waxing at the shampoo bowl.

Professional Eyebrow Waxing Consultation

At this time they should consult with you on how you want your eyebrows shaped. Do you like them full and defined, just cleaned up, or a large arch?  The technician should never just start waxing at away at your brows without knowing what you want your brows to look like.

The Waxing & Shaping

If needed, your brows will be trimmed with scissors. Don’t be scared and think they are taking your entire brows away. The excess bulk that’s removed makes for a much cleaner look.

They will cleanse your eyebrow area, apply powder and then the warm wax and strip (for soft wax). When hardened, it’s ripped off quickly. Your first wax will probably hurt a bit, but will get better each time. The hair underneath, in the middle of brows and on top (if you wish) will be removed.

Post-Wax

Wax cleanser will remove any residue, and a skin soother helps calm skin and ease redness. Any tiny hairs that were missed by the wax will be cleaned up with tweezers to fine-tune the brows.

The technician will then give you a mirror so you can see how your brows look. If they were shaped too thin, unfortunately there’s not much you can do but use an eyebrow pencil until they grow back in. But, if they are too thick then ask the technician to make them thinner.

If you like the way they’re shaped, make a standing appointment. Your brows will always look great, and never over-grown.

So who should Thread?

If you have sensitive skin or are prone to break out threading may be a better option for you. Although it is mildly painful the threading has no direct contact with your skin. It is very important to go to a reputable threading expert. If you do not you could end up with uneven brows, ingrown hairs or experience unecessary pain. I personally have never tried threading but am curious to see how it feels as compared to waxing.

Now you have the low down on what is involved these days in the brow world and this is just the beginning. There are even more options of penciling, tattooing, dying and even using laser hair removal. Here are my final tips for you:

1. Find a REPUTABLE salon for any service. If it sounds to good be true it probably is.

2. Even if you over pluck dont panic you can always pencil them in until they come back.

3. Irritation from waxing is short lived dont freak out it will go away!

4. Dont obsess over matchy matchy brows they are “sisters not twins”

5. At home waxing may seem like a good idea……it’s most likely not especially after that second glass of wine 🙂

If you have brow experiences please share them with us. We always want to hear the good, bad and the wonderful in the beauty world!

xoxo

Dayton Gives Back-Sidebar Benefit Show

August 18, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

When you walk around the Oregon District, you take in some of the great places that people frequently visit.  You have Omega Music and The Record Gallery for all of your music needs.  If you are looking for an establishment to have dinner at, Thai 9 has become one of the premiere places to partake in.  If you are looking for a night involving drinks, you certainly have your fill of the many options, with Lucky’s to Trolley Stop to Oregon Express and more.

The former Sidebar (photo by Tommy Johnson)

One establishment that you couldn’t help and check out when you were in the Oregon District was the sophisticated and trendy Sidebar.  The lounge was very distinctive as opposed to other nearby bars with their exposed steel beams, old brick walls and hardwood pine floors that creak with every step.  Sidebar’s sleek layout with a very stylish vibe gave the bar its own staple in the area.

Sadly, the crowds that flocked to the business each and every night will no longer be coming.  The dim lighting that gave the bar an intimate vibe will no longer be turned on.  The building that gave the neighborhood a suave, New York/Chicago vibe will become a building that will sit empty, collecting a colony of dust in the inside.

On July 30th, Sidebar owner Brian Higgins decided to close the doors of the bar for good after unpaid rent and taxes.  Employees were not only told about the closing, but they also weren’t paid for weeks.  If they received a paycheck, former employees would only see that check bounce.  The men and women who gave their life to the bar, who sacrificed everything, now were left with nothing.

With the people of the now-obsolete hotspot becoming a thing in the past, and the folks of the Sidebar now having to find jobs, they still needed to figure out how they were going to make ends meet in their everyday life.  With rent, utilities, insurance, children, and other things piling up, times are sadly going to be tough till they can get on their feet.  In spite of all this, light streaked through the clouds.

Bob and Lisa Mendenhall, owners of the Oregon District’s popular watering hole Blind Bob’s hosted a benefit concert for the former employees of Sidebar that took place on August 7th.  Also that night, a raffle took place of prizes that were donated from companies located throughout the Dayton area.  Some of the prizes were a certificate for a $50 payment to any utility company, pieces of art from local talent, t-shirts, 2 bottles of Grateful Dead vino, ton of CDs, steel tipped darts and a schnapps branded dartboard just name a few.

M Ross Perkins onstage at Blind Bob's (photo by Tommy Johnson)

The turnout was simply astonishing.  The weeks leading up to the event, people went to  the Facebook event page to not only voice their frustrations about the undoing of the establishment, but also show support.  The closer the event came closer, the number of people going increased.  As the night of the benefit show went on, Blind Bob’s became jam-packed.

The live music from all the bands was filled with a little bit of everything.  The first band that came out to perform was Orange Willard.  The five member band that is known for the grunge/prog rock sound stripped down and performed acoustic.  The set was raw, intense, and emotional.  M. Ross Perkins sang songs of businesses corruption and being hurt by phony people.  Roley Yuma changed the pace of the show with their brass, unapologetic set of punk blaring thru the bar.  Me & Mountains finished the show with their smooth indie rock sounds, giving the crowd a little bit of everything.

The night raised over $3300, giving some of the former employees of Sidebar a little help.  The night also raised awareness of  the depth of love that Dayton residents have for one another.  Strangers coming together at a moment’s notice to help others in the time of need.  Giving back to others who they have never met.  It didn’t matter.  The former employees of Sidebar will always remember this generosity.

Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival Band Spotlight – Volume I

August 15, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro 5 Comments

On September 8th and 9th, Dayton will be participating in the first annual Downtown Dayton Revival, a festival that will celebrate music of all kinds.  With three stages planned to be set up, people that attend the festival will be enjoying chart-topping entertainers, up and coming talent, along with some artists and bands that have become classics over the years.

Buffalo Killers

Andy Gabbard, Joe Sabaali, Zach Gabbard

One of the bands that will be taking the stage is the boys from Cincinnati, Buffalo Killers.  The trio consist of brothers Andrew (vocalist and guitarist) and Zachary Gabbard (bass guitarist), along with drummer Joseph Sebaali.  In 1999, Zach formed a garage rock band Thee Shams.  The band released four albums before disbanding.  In early 2006, Sebaali joined the brothers to form what the band is today.

Buffalo Killers have released four albums since their inception.  The first self-titled album was released in 2006.  The album was originally set to be a five-song demo that was going to be released independently.  However, the band received a call from Alive Records wanting the band sign with them.  The band agreed, and went to the studio and recorded an additional five songs.  The band quickly developed a following that included The Black Crowes lead singer, Chris Robinson.  Robinson loved the band so much he had the band open up for the The Black Crowes fall tour in 2007.  In 2008, Buffalo Killers released their second album, Let It Ride.  The album was produced by Black Keys guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach.  3, the band’s third album, was released in 2011.  And just recently, the band released Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.

Buffalo Killers’ undeniable sound is pouring with their influences from the music they grown up listening to-Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones.  With their garage rock roots still embedded, they also have a Southern psychedelic sound with them.  Without question the minute you start to listen to the band’s music, you instantly become infatuated.

Burnt Sugar

Our second band that will be highlighted helms from the streets of New York.  In 1999, guitarist and writer Greg Tate wanted to start a band and experiment with playing music outside of the boundaries.  Burnt Sugar, as he named the band, started to dig into the libraries of great soul and funk legends Chaka Khan, Nina Simone, George Clinton and the P-funk All Stars, along with jazz musician Miles Davis, and big band great Duke Ellington.  As the band improvises while playing, Tate will direct them by doing conducting them.  The unusual 12 person mash-up themed band has seen over 40 musicians come and play.

Burnt Sugar has over 15 albums out, with their latest in 2011 All Ya Needs That Negrocity.  Each album highlights the bands distinctive sound of soul, jazz, funk, blues, rock, and reggae.  A perfect blend of styles soar through each album.

Rusted Root

90’s music is still widely popular throughout the United States.  Many consider the decade to be the best time for music ever.  One band that is still seeing fans come in hordes for their live shows, and will see their share of fans at the Downtown Revival is the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania band, Rusted Root.

Rusted Root released their first major-label album in 1994, When I Woke.  Now, in the 20th year as a band, the band have released 7 albums and sold over 3 million records worldwide.  In the fall of this year, Rusted Root plans on releasing their new album, tentatively titled Fortunate Freaks.  “Send Me On My Way” has become the band’s most popular song, both commercially and with fans.  Rusted Root’s blend of acoustic and rock, mixed with influences from the many musical styles of the world have given the band a following that many compare them to the likes of the Grateful Dead and Dave Matthews Band.  Having talked to some people that have seen Rusted Root perform live, I have been told that their jam sessions during their live shows is simply poetic.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGMabBGydC0′]

The Cliftones, Robert Randolph and the Family Band

The Cliftones

The Cliftones will be generating some dancing with the crowd at the Downtown Revival.  The 10 piece Cincinnati-based band will be supplying the masses with rich reggae music.  On the band’s website, they declare that ‘the crowd always leaves their show a sweaty mess every time’.   If you are a fan of The Gladiators, The Congos, and of course the best reggae singer possibly of all time-Bob Marley, then you won’t be disappointed with The Cliftones performance.

If Rusted Root, and The Cliftones are not simply enough to satisfy your appetite for soul music, Robert Randolph and the Family Band are going to make sure that changes in a hurry.

Randolph was trained as a pedal steel guitarist in his church at the age of fifteen.  By the age of nineteen, he started to get interested in listening and watching guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan.  The influence of the way Vaughan played gave Randolph the fuel to evolve his way of playing the pedal steel.  The change caused people to take notice quickly.

Randolph and the Family Band started playing together around 2000.  They started like most bands do small venues and local watering holes.  Rapidly, the band started to sell out clubs.  The band has played with great musical talent.  Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, B.B. King are some of the people who have had the pleasure of performing with the band.

According to Randolph, the group’s sound is inspired by successful 70s funk bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone.  The live shows are legendary.  Randolph is known to bust a moves while the band’s go into a jam session.  Crowd involvement is greatly encouraged.  Dayton-you have been put on notice.  You better be ready to get down, and dance the day and night away as the smooth soul and vibrate funk come out of the band during their performance.

Downtown Dayton is going to the dogs…

August 15, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

"Woof!" (translation: "We want our own downtown park!")

Just over the pedestrian bridge spanning the Mad River as it converges with its sister rivers in Downtown Dayton, and past the beautiful Deeds Point where statues of a couple of famous Dayton brothers look over the downtown skyline, exists an abandoned park that is getting a new life with the help of some dedicated downtown dog owners with a mission of creating downtown dog park.  The group was started by David Hurwitz, Uli Fiedler, Karen Stephens, Darryl Demure (aka Ms. Demure from Bazzaroworld), and Aaron Sorrell – Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Dayton.

While this team of dog enthusiasts is fairly new and not yet an official non-profit organization, their goal is to obtain their 501 (c)(3) status very soon with money they hope to raise at a benefit on Thursday August 16th at Club Aquarius.  They’ve already made quite a bit of progress in cleaning up the lot and even installing a fence with a double-gate (a must in any dog park), and they have bigger plans that include transforming the existing building that sits on the lot into a hot dog and/or mocha stand.  If they win a $500,000 prize through the 2012 Beneful Dream Dog Park Contest, that could soon be a reality!

To keep up with progress, you can follow their Facebook group page called Dayton Unleashed.  And if you have a dog and live in the downtown area (or even if you don’t), be sure to come out on Thursday night for an entertaining event with Ms. Demure at Club Aquarius.  This is a group that is doing great things and deserves support from the community!

Two Dayton Seamstresses Need Your Help To Sew Their Dreams

August 8, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Sew Dayton is a fun new sewing shop located in downtown Dayton, Ohio with a modern style and a pinch of vintage inspirations. It’s not your grandma’s traditional sewing store but she would still love to shop here!

[yframe url=’http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2071372453/sew-dayton-fun-trendy-pinch-of-vintage’]

Our Dayton, Ohio community has an amazing group of emerging crafters and artists. Dayton is thriving with creativity and it’s exciting to see the arts develop in our community. With all this talent you might be surprised to know that Dayton, Ohio is missing a place for people to learn how to sew! Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced level sewer, there is a need for a space in Dayton that offers private lessons, group classes, high quality fabrics & notions, modern & vintage patterns and knowledgeable staff.

Sew Dayton is dedicated to helping clients solve problems and answer questions about sewing projects of all levels at any step in the process. Our goal is not only to be a great resource for all sewers but to offer sewing materials you can’t find anywhere else. Sew Dayton will stock both modern and vintage fabrics which is lacking in our area. If you’re looking for materials that are on target with current trends, then Sew Dayton is your store!

Core Values at Sew Dayton:

·       Customers and clients should be treated like family.

·       Every customer is welcomed with a smile (and a hug)!

·       We gladly help all clients no matter the size of the project or the experience of the sewer.

·       Your projects are important to us.

·       Customer service is a top priority. We will take time to listen and understand your needs.

Tracy McElfresh of Dresses by Tracy McElfresh, LLC will be part of Sew Dayton!

Sew Dayton is passionate and energetic about the art of sewing. We are excited to share our knowledge with others and we are dedicated to our community and to the success of arts in Dayton.

One of the goals of the Greater Downtown Dayton Plan is to help launch entrepreneurs down the path of owning their own business while revitalizing Dayton’s downtown abandoned store fronts. Activated Spaces was developed as a partnership between the Downtown Dayton Partnership, UpDayton, and Generation Dayton to see this goal come to life. Sew Dayton has applied to be a part of this amazing project.

Working with Activated Spaces allows us to set up shop in an empty street level store front in Downtown Dayton. Sew Dayton will receive a reduced rate rent and a start up lease term that works for us.

Sadly, some storefronts in Dayton have been left vacant and neglected over the years. Activated Spaces requires that we give our space some TLC in order to get the doors open. With a donation from you, it will be possible for us to revitalize our storefront space and open the doors with Sew Dayton up and running within the 30 days. Sew Dayton needs your help!

Jesy Anderson of JKessel Design will be part of Sew Dayton!!

In order for Sew Dayton to flourish we will need to set up an account with a modern and trendy fabric distributor, purchase additional fabrics, notions, patterns, sewing machines for classes, and make over our storefront. This is where the initial start up cost exceeds our current savings.

Donations will help us achieve our goal of opening a new shop in Dayton! You can give now through their Kickstarter Campaign.

We want our dream to succeed and with your help it will blossom and become a reality. We want to keep our dollars local and help our community thrive while we fulfill our dream of opening Sew Dayton.

Thank You,

Tracy McElfresh and Jesy Anderson of Sew Dayton

Dayton Playhouse presents ‘Side by Side by Sondheim’

August 8, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Dayton Playhouse will present Side by Side by Sondheim as its 2012-2013 Season extra September 7 – 16. This energetic musical, highlighting the most endearing of Sondheim’s early work, will be directed by Brian Sharp with musical direction by Ron Kindell, both of whom won acclaim for last season’s sold-out production of The Sound of Music.

Side by Side by Sondheim will feature local actor Saul Caplan as the master of ceremonies and vocalists Carol Chatfield and Bonnie Dobbs of Kettering, Kathy Clark of Centerville, Laura Bloomingdale of Beavercreek, Shawn Hooks of Dayton, and David Moyer of Springboro. Nancy Perrin and Bryon Dobbs are featured pianists.

When, in 1976, the owners of a small, struggling theater asked Stephen Sondheim for permission to produce a musical revue of his work as a fundraiser, the composer said he “couldn’t think of anything more boring.” However, Sondheim underestimated the appeal of his music, and when Side by Side by Sondheim opened, it charmed its initial audiences and caught the eye of a young Cameron Macintosh, who moved it to the Mermaid theater in London, where it became one of his first successful productions.

Widely produced, and popular with regional groups, Side by Side by Sondheim is often given credit for solidifying Sondheim’s reputation beyond London and New York theaters. This “boring” show has enjoyed numerous revivals, five Tony nominations, and over 800 performances on three continents.

Shawn Hooks and David Moyer in 'Side by Side'

Side by Side by Sondheim  is unique in that it is the only revue of Sondheim’s work to include music from West Side Story and Gypsy, shows for which Sondheim wrote the lyrics, but did not compose the music. It is also one of the only places for audiences to hear some of his lesser-known works such as “Love is in the Air,” which was initially intended to be the opening number for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but was replaced with the well known “Comedy Tonight.”

Other musicals highlighted in the revue include the popular Company, Follies, and A Little Night Music, as well as rarely performed shows such as Evening Primrose, Anyone Can Whistle, and Pacific Overtures. The show features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by  Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers, and Jule Styne, and Continuity by Ned Sherrin. It was produced on Broadway by Harold Prince in association with Ruth Mitchell.

Side by Side by Sondheim opens September 7th and runs through September 16th, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, and Sundays at 2PM. Tickets, priced at $17.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and seniors, are available at www.DaytonPlayhouse.com or through the Dayton Playhouse box office at 937-424-8477.

Poet and activist Christine Leclerc at Antioch College

August 7, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Christine Leclerc

Vancouver-based poet and activist Christine Leclerc will read her new works and present a workshop on craft at Antioch College August 16 and 18. While the reading and workshop are free and open to the public, registration is required for the workshop, for which seating is limited to 12 participants.

Leclerc will read her poetry at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 16, in Olive Kettering Library. She will present the workshop “Energy, Collaboration, and Form,” from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, in McGregor Hall, Room 130. To register for the workshop, send an email to [email protected].

Leclerc is the author of Counterfeit (Capilano University Editions, 2008) and an editor of The Enpipe Line (Creekstone Press, 2012), 70,000+ km of poetry written in resistance to the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. She studied creative writing at the University of British Columbia, and her poetry, fiction and essays have appeared in magazines and journals across North America. She has been known to direct community theater in corporate headquarters and board oil rigs at sea.

The three-hour poetry workshop will focus on energy, collaboration and form. Participants will discuss poetic engagement with energy issues and dissect the formal or structural elements of these poems. The shared vocabulary generated by this exercise equips participants with the ability to collaborate on a new poetic form or structure. The guided writing that caps off this workshop allows participants to explore the results of their collaboration.

The Writing Institute at Antioch College sponsors Leclerc’s visit to Yellow Springs. The institute supports Antioch College’s mission and Learning Outcomes by providing members of the College community with opportunities for focused study of the writing craft. In the last year, the institute has sponsored visits and workshops by poet Ann Filemyr (A Healer’s Diary, Sunstone Press, 2012), writer and artist Nikki McClure (To the Market, To the Market, Abrams Books, 2011), journalists Liz F. Kay and John-John Williams (The Baltimore Sun), local author and Wright State professor Jeffery Alan John (A Bird in Your Hand, Lucid Books, 2010), and National Book Award winner Jaimy Gordon (Lord of Misrule, McPherson, 2010), the latter co-sponsored with The Antioch Review.

Adam Parker Smith: An Artistic Conversation

August 1, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Adam Parker Smith

Adam Parker Smith is a Brooklyn based multidisciplinary artist who constructs kinetic, animated and static paintings, sculpture, video, assemblage, and collage to form visual paradoxes and parodies.  Smith received his BA from the University of California at Santa Cruz and his MFA from Tyler School of Art.  His work has been shown throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Blue Sky Project is a summer experience that empowers professional artists from around the world and local youth to collaborate and build community through the creation of ambitious works of contemporary art and performance.  Adam Parker Smith participated in Blue Sky Project in 2007.  At that time the program was stationed in McHenry County, Illinois before being relocated to Dayton, Ohio in 2009.   Smith is now paying his first professional visit to Dayton as one of six returning resident artist who have come back to the program for the summer of 2012.  I had the opportunity to sit down with Adam and discuss his work.

Philip Titlebaum:  How did you first find out about and get involved with Blue Sky Project?

Adam Parker Smith:  When I first moved to New York, I was looking for any excuse to get out of the city, so I found myself applying for as many residency programs as possible.  Luckily one of the programs that I applied to was Blue Sky.  I took an interview with Mequitta [Ahuja] and Peter [Benkendorf] and everything seemed to be a good fit so they asked me out for the summer and I had an incredible time.

"Bold As Love" 2007

PT:  Could you discuss the work you did with Blue Sky Project in 2007?

APS:  Collaborating seven high school students I created seventy heads  on wooden pikes constructed from felt and pins form a landscape of imagined creatures and American icons including Mike Tyson, Anna Nicole Smith, and John F. Kennedy.

PT:  Can you speak a little about your installation “This Side of Paradise (I Lost All My Money in the Great Depression and All I Got Was This Room)” and what led you to reimagine it?

“This Side of Paradise (I Lost All My Money in the Great Depression and All I Got Was This Room)” 2012

APS:  The original installation that I did was in a unique location up in the Bronx.  The show that I was involved in that the piece was constructed for was put on by the organization, No Longer Empty.  In an attempt to connect with the community and bring together different arts organizations from the Bronx, No Longer Empty had taken the Andrew Freedman Home and converted it into a large environment for collaborative and installation based art projects.  The Andrew Freedman Home has an interesting history.  It was opened in the late 30’s for a retirement home for formerly wealthy individuals who had lost all their money in the Great Depression.  Abandoned in the 70’s, large portions of the house laid vacant until the opening of the show.  My installation piece that I did at the Andrew Freedman Home related to the economical history of the community and past residents as well as the current socioeconomic status of the Bronx and also the nation as we struggle through another recession.   The installation took the form of a three-dimensional wall treatment for a former bedroom at the Andrew Freeman Home that underscored the fact that the “wealth” that manifested itself there was in fact an illusion, created for the comfort of its residents. The greatly enlarged pattern emulated a traditional wallpaper motif, and was articulated with an array of plastic flowers and fruit, varnished baked goods, elegantly wrapped hard candies, jelly beans, and costume jewelry. While the materials alluded to opulence, they were purchased inexpensively at a dollar store. There was a cheery hopefulness to the arrangement that suggested both optimism in the midst of loss, and the absurdity of keeping up a good facade.  Also important to the piece was the idea of the involvement and engagement of the surrounding community and the population that visited the site while my work was installed.  These elements made for an easy transition to the Blue Sky Project, which at its core holds collaboration as a crucial element.

“This Side of Paradise (I Lost All My Money in the Great Depression and All I Got Was This Room)” 2012

PT:  How has your experience with the first manifestation of this project informed your process this time around?

APS:  The initial installation was constructed primarily by myself, so upon completion I was eager to get a larger community involved in the project.  Blue Sky has such a great network here in the Dayton community that this is now possible.

PT:  What is your other work like?

APS:  My work is a mixture of animated and static painting, sculpture, video, assemblage, and collage.  I try and form visual paradoxes and parodies to make visual tableaus that are taken from my daily experiences and glorified. I try and draw moments from a range of political, personal, and fantastical scenarios to establish psychological sites for different elements to coagulate.  I gather my materials from vernacular culture, hardware stores, and museums. Most of the work starts with simple pranks and tongue in check humor and then erodes to display undercurrents of dissatisfaction and dysfunction.  There is humor in the work, but it is mostly related to a more academic definition of comedy with origins in the theatre of Ancient Greece where dramatic performances pit two societies against each other in an amusing conflict. The vantage point taken of this agon of comedy is a struggle between the powerless youth and societal conventions where the youth is left with little options other then to take dramatic unconventional action.

Adam's collaborators in the midst of the creative process

PT:  What inspires you as an artist?

APS:  Inspiration for me comes from many different sources, but for this installation, almost all of my inspiration comes from the young artists that I get to collaborate with.  Most of the piece for this installation will be constructed by the artists that I am working with.  Although the original framework is in place for the piece the creative energy will be fueled by the community and my collaborators.

Please join us this Friday, August 3 between 5 and 8 pm for the opening of Adam Parker Smith’s installation “This Side of Paradise (I Lost All My Money in the Great Depression and All I Got Was This Room)” at 8 North Main Street, Dayton, Ohio.  This event is free and open to the public.  It is presented as a part of Downtown Dayton’s First Friday Art Hop.

Ross Bros and Zanders Create the Magic of Tchoupitoulas

July 31, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

(submitted by Deb Lukjanovs, FilmDayton volunteer)

Two brothers whose careers as filmmakers began when they documented the everyday people and events in their hometown of Sidney, Ohio have come full circle, to film three brothers on the move in their own vastly different hometown of New Orleans. Bill and Turner Ross—whose first feature length film, “45365″, won a number of accolades including the 2009 SXSW Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature—have now turned their cameras and their creative genius to Tchoupitoulas.  The name means “river people” in Choctaw Indian, and shares its name with a New Orleans street, a restaurant, and a district outside the city.  Tchoupitoulas, which premiered at SXSW this year, has also brought in several  awards, including the 2012 Hot Docs HBO Documentary Films Emerging Artist Award, the 2012 Dallas International Film Festival’s award for best documentary, and the 2012 Ashland Independent Film Festival’s best documentary award.  The film’s Dayton debut, along with a Q and A session with the Ross brothers, takes place at the FilmDayton Festival, on Sunday, August 26 at 7:15 PM at the Neon Movies.

The Ross brothers have deep roots in both Ohio and New Orleans.  Their mother still lives in 45365 (the zip code in Sidney), where their first film takes place.  Dayton filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar have served—in Bill Turner’s words—as the brothers’ “cinematic parents” following their first film effort. The couple reached out to them through an email greeting them with “Greetings from 45387” after seeing 45365.  The Ross’ father lives in New Orleans, so the brothers have had a long term relationship with the city of New Orleans as well.  That early exposure to the city informed their vision of the film.  “We had spent a decent amount of time in New Orleans as kids,” said filmmaker Bill Ross, who shared camera time with his brother Turner and also edited the film.  “We wanted to sort of get to feelings and images that had stuck in our heads as little guys. We were hoping to find some kids and just go along with whatever adventures they were on.”

The two brothers found the three brothers entirely by accident—and the result of that chance meeting is the surreal and dreamlike Tchoupitoulas, their second  feature documentary, which follows the three boys through the sometimes scary but always interesting landscape of nocturnal New Orleans.  The Ross brothers began by filming some of the strangeness of NOLA’s late night life, but seven months later they happened upon the three Zander brothers and Tchoupitoulas began taking shape.  “We were up every night, filming all night long,” said Ross, who has lived in NOLA intermittently for most of his life.  “One day, we were up and out during the day, and these kids walked right past us.  We immediately said ‘These are the guys’ and went up to talk with them.”

The kids turned out to be the Zander brothers, Kentrell (16), Bryan (15), and William (11).  They were immediately interested in the idea of the movie, but talking them into being in it was not easy.  “The two older ones tried to talk us out of having William in it because he was ‘too annoying,’” Ross said.  “It took us about 20 minutes to talk them into letting him be in the film.”

Single tickets will be available online beginning August 3, 2012. For the rest of the story and information on attending the Dayton Premier of TCHOUPITOULAS on August 26, visit FilmDayton.com.
