As we all know the COVID 19 greatly affected the restaurant industry, forcing many restaurants to reduce hours, cut entire service shifts and close on days they were usually open. Almost two years from when the Corona virus first started to spread, restaurants are still feeling the effect. Many struggled to recover from lost profits, pay back debts, and fill staff openings amid a labor shortage.

The following restaurants closed their doors for good in 2022:

The Bun Bros. ConeyLand

Opereated as Coneyland over 10 years with 3 operators but then closed until  Mike Davis relaunching it in the summer of 2021 as The Bun Bros Coneyland.  After his unexpected deat

5 Days of Giving at Greek Street

December 18, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Greek Street, which started out as a  food truck run by Chef Chris Spirtos then opened a brick and mortar eatery in Cross Pointe Center this past May will be hosting “5 Days Of Giving” this week.
For every customer order, Greek Street will donate $1 to the charity of that day!
*Monday 12/19- Washington Township Fire Department
*Tuesday 12/20- Centerville Citizens Police Academy Alumni
*Wednesday 12/21- SICSA
*Thursday 12/22- Ronald McDonald House
*Friday 12/23- Dayton Children’s Hospital
General Manager Doug Shie says they chose the charity’s based on staff connections.  Helping first responders made the fire department and police academy easy choices. Doug adopted his dog from SICSA and owner Chris’s family stayed at the Ronald McDonald house when he was born and at Children’s Hospital.   Each charity will be given the dollars earned on their day as well as a $50 gift card they can use as they like.
Shie also says they will be moving forward with support of other area nonprofits in 2023 and if you’ve got one you’d like to have considered email him.  He also shared that the food truck will be going out this spring/summer for community events.

Thai Kitchen Will Be Moving Into Larger Spot

December 13, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Suwapat “Sue” Whitted, the owner of Thai Kitchen and Thai Table has confirmed they’ve outgrown their  Kingsridge location they’ve been in since 2017.  Early this month they introduced a new logo:

She describes it on their facebook page: “The custom hand lettering evokes a personal and exciting flavor as well as Asian art to match our Thai cuisine. The Tuk Tuk is an iconic vehicle in Thailand and is now our new icon! We’ll be using this Tuk Tuk moving forward on several different items so when you see this Tuk Tuk think ‘Thai Kitchen!”

They’ve posted signage at their new location, which will  at 2335 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Miami Twp. across from the Dayton Mall, where Rusty Taco closed this past October.

Whitted says they are currently waiting on permits from Montgomery County and will be doing some remodeling and hope to open in January of 2023.
She is also currently working on opening

Neighborhood Bakery to Close Dec 17th

November 28, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

A bakery has been on the corner of 700 Troy Street for 125 years.  In 1969 Bill Evans bought the business and ran Evans Bakery with his family  for about 35 years before he sold it in 2004.  That new owner operated it for about 7 years, but eventually closed it.  Evans, who still owned the building, found a new owner for the business, his daughter Jennifer.

Jennifer has never envisioned herself running the bakery.  She’d gotten an engineering degree and had been working in that field for about 15 years in Michigan. But she was looking for a change, and her partner Matt Tepper, who was a city manager in the Detroit area, also felt the need for a change.  So they both moved to Dayton and on Dec 17th of 2012 they reopened Evans Bakery. Jennifer felt inspired to restore the bakery and bring vibrancy to the neighborhood she’d grown up in.

And for ten years, six days a week she worked 16 hours days baking.  She says making their biggest seller, their donuts takes up half of that time.  Jennifer shared that though an introvert, she has loved getting to know her neighbors and regulars through the bakery. She told us about one of her regulars, who became a friend, “Toshio who commissioned this amazing rendering of our beloved bakery. The very talented Loretta Puncer Art captured every last detail to perfection. Now while you’re admiring our showcase of donuts, pastries and baked goods you can also admire fine art.”

Artist Loretta Puncer, Jennifer Evans, Toshio and Matt Tepper

Jennifer says, “it’s been a wonderful 10 years and it’s hard to articulate exactly why, but this is hard work, my body is starting to break down and I want more time for other things, but the bakery consumes my life.”

One of the things she’s looking forward to is the freedom to travel up to Michigan to visit her daughter and grandkids.  You can hear the joy in her voice when she shared how thrilling it was be there over Thanksgiving, when her 2nd grandchild came home from the hospital.

So on Thursday, December 17th, exactly 10 years from the day she started as the bakery owner,  when she locks the doors at their 3pm closing time, it will be for the last time.   Though she does say they will fulfill holiday orders of pies, breads, and cookies placed by Dec 17th for pick up through Dec 24th, but no more donuts.

Puncer’s painting of the bakery.

And while she says she looks forward to never baking another thing, she’s happy to entertain offers from others that may want to lease or buy the bakery and or the building.  She’s also quick to point out she’s not leaving the neighborhood.  She lives above the bakery currently and has several rental properties in the neighborhood.

Soul Food Pop Up Shop Serving Out of Butter Cafe

November 10, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Chris Hunter spent 17 years in prison on a non-violent drug charge, and spent his time cooking in prison kitchens. With hard word and earned time for good behavior he was released early this past May.  He quickly got a job working at Butter Cafe. After working there a few months, he approached Amy, the owner, about being able to do a pop up business out of the building, similar to how Isiah Davis of The Cookieologist launched his business.  Chris has been eager to use his  second chance, to share the flavorful soul food he loves to cook.

He’s operating a pop-up shop operating out of the Butter Cafe kitchen on Brown Street.  You can pick up your orders out of the window on the south sided of the building from 4-9pm  everyday except Tuesday.

His menu includes nachos, chicken and pepperoni stromboli, pork chop platters and sides like fresh collard greens, baked macaroni and cheese, fried cabbage and A New Soul rice.  Chris shared he’ll soonbe adding fried catfish to the menu.

Demnika’s Italiano Opens in Spot Formerly Run By Current Owners Dad

November 3, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

In 2008  Mefail “Meef” Demnika open an Italian Restaurant at 2667 S Dixie Drive and ran it for 10 years and then sold it in 2017 to Randy Fontana, a U.S. Army veteran and his son. The restaurant struggle during Covid and was shut down by the health department after they failed to renew their food service license in April of 2022.

Meef went on to open the Tuscany’s Grill in Market in April of 2020 at at 881 E. Franklin St. just east of Centerville High School.

Just recently Meef’s son Ali, with the help of his Mom, have taken on the S. Dixie property to open Deminka’s.  They plan on opening Demnika’s Italiano this Thursday November 3rd at 11am, but it will be cash only until they get their register system up and running.  They will be open Monday through Saturday serving up pizza and pasta dishes like lasagna, ravioli, manicotti and stuffed shells, as well as calzones and sandwiches.

They’ve applied for a liquor license, but until they get it, guests are encouraged to bring their own wine or beer.  They’ve partnered with DoorDash for delivery and will eventually add Grub Hub and Uber Eats.

Ali told us the restaurant is family owned and all their staff will be family, with the exception of his girlfriend, who is almost family.  They will take reservations, and on the weekends you can do call ahead seating.

Ali shared it felt a little weird to be back in the space after five years away from it, but he’s looking forward to bringing the space back to life.
