Dayton Ballet Barre offers fun holiday tradition with Sugar Plum Tea, a children’s tradition before the December 18th matinee performance of the Dayton Ballet’s The Nutcracker.This is the first Tea back since the pandemic shutdown, and organizers are planning a fun comeback event at the Dayton Woman’s Club, which is within walking distance of the Schuster Center.

The Dayton Ballet Barre is the Dayton Ballet’s volunteer booster organization, and one of their signature events is the long-running Sugar Plum Tea. Held prior to one of the matinee performances of the Ballet’s beloved Nutcracker production, it’s become a holiday tradition that families look forward to. Geared towards children and parents / grandparents, the afternoon tea promises to provide many cherished memories.

“We love hosting this children’s event!” Libby Ballengee, the Ballet Barre’s Secretary and past President, shared with us. “It’s like Prom for five-year-olds. We adore seeing all the kid’s sparkly dresses & suits. It’s a really special afternoon, and we’re so happy to be back hosting this after two years off.”

The Tea lasts for 90 min, enough time for to enjoy hot beverages & tea sandwiches, make a craft, learn a short dance from the Sugar Plum Fairy, and hear the story of The Nutcracker under the Christmas Tree. Each moment provides a beautiful photo opportunity against the gorgeous back-drop of the Dayton Woman’s Club.

All children and adults need a ticket to attend. The ticket includes tea party foods (cute sandwiches, fruit, & yummy desserts, with hot beverages including hot chocolate, tea, and coffee. This ticket does not include a ticket to the Dayton Ballet performance. Those are purchased separately through DaytonLive.org.

Jeff Murphy Brings Liza, Judy & Barbara To The Stage

At age 4, Jeff Murphy was mesmerized. He was watching “A Star is Born”, starring Judy Garland, on a tiny black and white TV in the family living room. He didn’t know the beautiful woman with the extraordinary voice, but he was certain of one thing; it was love at first sight.

Just as little Judy, then named Frances Gumm, watched her parents do eight shows a day in Vaudeville, Jeff watched his mother and father star as the local darlings of community theater. The theater was a comfortable second home, and he immediately went from front row center into the spotlight. In one form or another, he’s been there ever since.

As a Celebrity Illusionist, Jeff Murphy has channeled Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland & Barbara Streisand just to name a few. Traveling the world, he brought his leading ladies to Tokyo, Sydney, Atlantic City, and New York including Madame Tussaud’s and The Plaza Hotel. He guest starred as a ‘fabulously crazy’ Liza Minnelli impersonator, on David E. Kelley’s FOX television series, ‘The Wedding Bells’.

Jeff is an accomplished producer, director and choreographer with theatrical award nominations and credits. Busy on both sides of the curtain, Jeff is also an accomplished producer, director and choreographer. One New York production he created, produced, and stared in, “Below the Valley of the Dolls”, gained him a MAC award nomination. Backstage reviewer Martin Schaeffer writes; “Murphy is much more than a campy drag. Underneath it all is a germ of real dramatic depth. Of course is doesn’t hurt that he has lots of talent”. John Hoglund, of Cabaret Hotline, writes; “Murphy is a very talented singer, dancer, and actor.

Jeff attended the acclaimed American Academy of Dramatic of Arts and acting credits include creating the role of Hansel in the New York City Opera retelling of Hansel and Gretel “Babes in the Woods”, title role “Peter Pan”, Puck in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and the Artful Dodger in “Oliver!”.

This Friday, Oct 28th The Dayton Woman’s Club will present a Dinner and a show featuring illusionist Jeff Murphy as Liza, Judy & Barbara. Seating is limited to 112 so make early reservations!!!

Porgy & Bess is the Great American Opera, celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 2010! With beloved music like “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “Bess You Is My Woman Now”, the residents of Catfish Row, 1920’s Charleston SC, will vividly come to life on the stage of the Schuster Center. This production will bring together a broad-based community-wide collaboration and celebration fitting for the 50th Season opener!

Porgy and Bess Synopsis

Throughout the 1920’s, George Gershwin was one of the Broadway musical theater’s leading lights. By the end of 1930, he had composed the scores for 22 complete shows as well as collaborating on others; but it was Gershwin’s first instrumental concert work, Rhapsody in Blue in 1924, that made him famous. It may seem strange that a productive, sought-after songwriter would devote the better part of two years to a single large work, but Porgy and Bess was Gershwin’s magnum opus. It was nourished by more than a decade of technical study and a longheld interest in African-American experience. It boasts of a fine African-American play by DuBose Heyward and Gershwin’s music brings to the play dramatic power, humor, tragedy, rich atmospheric colors and finely drawn characterizations. Incorporating a wealth of blues and jazz idioms into the classical art form of opera, Gershwin considered it his finest work.

Nine of Dayton’s finest restaurants and clubs will salute Dayton Opera’s 50th Anniversary Season opener Porgy and Bess from October 14-31 with special low-country menus or features priced at $20.50.
