SICSA to offer Mediocre Pet Portraits on Giving Tuesday

November 22, 2022 By Dayton937

“The definition of mediocre is ordinary, common, or average.  That accurately describes how many of us draw.  With that in mind, our Giving Tuesday event was appropriately named Mediocre Pet Portraits,” said Nora Vondrell, CEO and President of SICSA Pet Adoption and Wellness Center (SICSA).  “No one thinks of their pets as ordinary, but for a minimum donation of $10 to SICSA on Giving Tuesday, we’ll provide a Mediocre Pet Portrait of their pet.”

The Mediocre Pet Portrait event will take place on Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2022.  Giving Tuesday is a global movement unleashing the power of generosity that encourages people to give to or collaborate with charitable organizations.  Members of the public can participate in Mediocre Pet Portraits through SICSA’s Facebook Fundraiser page where they will be able to provide their donation and then upload a photo of their pet in the comments section.  Later that day, the completed mediocre pet portraits will be uploaded into a Giving Tuesday Mediocre Pet Portraits Photo Album on SICSA’s Facebook page.

“Local SICSA supporters and volunteers have signed up to help us draw all the portraits,” stated Vondrell.  “Last year we had close to 30 people drawing more than 300 portraits in this fun event!”  At the conclusion of the event, people may pick up their completed drawings from SICSA’s Adoption Lobby during business hours.  SICSA is located at 8172 Washington Church Road, Dayton, OH 45458.  The fundraiser can be found online at facebook.com/sicsapets.

SICSA Presents The Poop Show

August 13, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

We can all agree that 2020 has been an all-around crappy year. SICSA, like so many other nonprofits has had to change their fundraisers, moving their annual Lift Your Leg run in June to a virtual event and they have canceled our annual Cat’s Meow cocktail party fundraiser this fall.

So too help SICSA stay on track for their fundraising goals, they have put together a tongue-in-cheek game of chance that will give purchasers a shot at winning $10,000! To go along with the “theme” of this year, they have created a new fundraising idea: The Poop Show!

Turn that frown upside down with a chance to win $10,000!

On September 19, 2020, They will hold a live event online featuring our game of chance, along with promoting SICSA and their sponsors through an engaging show hosted by Josh Stucky and Gabrielle Enright and with fun in mind, and sharing the important mission of SICSA. Here are the details of the event:

  • A dog play yard will be divided into one foot squares. This means you have a one in 1,584 chance to win!
  • At the top of the event, they will randomly draw and assign names to those squares based upon those who purchased chances. Only 1,584 chances will be sold. In the event the winning square is not assigned to a chance purchaser, the proceeds of the winning square will be retained by SICSA.
  • Once all squares are assigned chances the day of the event, they will bring out a dog to play in the yard with his/her handler. When nature calls – and it will – the square where the poop lands wins the $10,000!
  • Chances are only $50 each. The first 100 people who purchase 4 or more chances will also receive a VIP (Very Important Pooper) Paw Pack with gifts valuing over $50!
  •   You need not be present on event day to win, but why wouldn’t you? Just log onto SICSA’s Facebook page or YouTube Channel at 2:00pm and watch the fun all the way to the big event–the grand pooper!
Tickets can be purchased online.

Pizza Party for SISCA Aug 15th

Boy, have we got a Food Adventure for you this Wednesday! Pizza and Beer!

Wednesday August 15th SICSA – Pet Adoption Center teams up with Heavier Than Air Brewing Company for a fundraiser, featuring some pizzas off of local menus!

With all of the breweries in town, it is hard to keep a handle on this booming industry.  One of the new kids on the block deserves some love and an honorable mention.

“Heavier Than Air Brewing” in Centerville has been recognized with some awards at the Ohio Craft Brewers Cup.   Heavier Than Air‘s European Pale Ale ESB and their Stout McCook both were gold winners.

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THE SUMMER PIZZA PARTY FOR SICSA:

WHEN: WEDNESDAY AUGUST 15th from 5:30PM to 8pm

Submarine House Philly Cheesesteak Pizza

WHERE: HEAVIER THAN AIR BREWING COMPANY, 497 MIAMISBURG- CENTERVILLE RD, CENTERVILLE, OH 45459

COST: $5 each to attend the PIZZA PARTY all of which is donated to SICSA.

CASH BAR – $1 will be donated to SICSA for every pint of beer sold.

Beer and pizza sounds great.. so whatcha gonna eat ????

MUST EATS:

Pizza from the following restaurants:

— BARGO’S PIZZA
Thin crust, delicious pizza that is always great with beer!

— CENTERVILLE PIZZA and  BBQ’s PIZZA
Hand tossed, nationally award-winning pizzas. They will surely have a unique pie on hand.

— DOUBLEDAY’S MONSTER PIZZA
A cult following has quietly kept this place making hand tossed specialty pies with lots of inventive toppings for decades.

— KING’S NY PIZZA:
Formerly “Johnny’s Slice of NY,” This pizza is authentic New York City Style Pizza. Big Slices, big flavor.

— MACKS TAVERN’S PIZZA
Thin crust pizza cut into tiny squares, this is the only pizzeria that uses diced pepperoni like the serve in school pizza.

— POUR HAUS’ PIZZA
Thin crust pizza, the sauce is delicious too. Look for them to turn some heads with their pizza pies.

Mack’s Pepperoni pizza

— SUBMARINE HOUSE PIZZA
Thin and crispy pizza, we are hoping they feature one of their Philly cheese steak pizzas. Great stuff here !

You gotta wash it down ….

MUST DRINKS:

— “EARN YOUR WINGS GOLDEN ALE” with BLACK CURRANT:
This is the best beer we have ever had here, hands down. It is a light beer with a hint of blackberries.

— “EARN YOUR WINGS GOLDEN ALE”
This is their lightest beer and it is delicious. Easy drinking and promises to please the “non craft beer crowd.”

Heavier Than Air Brewing on 725

— “MCCOOK BOUND STOUT”
Not our style, but it won an award at the Ohio Craft Brewers Cup. So if you like dark, dark beer… go for this one !

Heavier Than Air Brewing Co. will donate $1 for every pint sold to SICSA, and again, entry to the pizza party is $5 per person.  All pizza entry funds will be donated to SICSA, which is set to break ground on a new $5 million facility in Washington Township this fall!   There will also be a chance to win a Heavier Than Air Brewing Co. growler!

ISLE OF DOGS, FINDING YOUR FEET, DAYTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL – Busy Times at THE NEON!

April 19, 2018 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Everyone!

This past weekend was pretty incredible. From the enthusiastic crowds to the cute pups in the lobby from SICSA, we had an exciting, packed weekend. Thanks to everyone who helped to create such good energy here over the past several days. ISLE OF DOGS will certainly stick around.  If you still need to see THE LEISURE SEEKER, you’ll need to hurry – Today (April 19) will be its last day. On Friday, we will open the new uplifting British comedy starring Imelda Staunton – FINDING YOUR FEET. This new film is only scheduled to play for one week – so don’t delay!

Synopsis for FINDING YOUR FEET: “When ‘Lady’ Sandra Abbott (Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton – VERA DRAKE, PRIDE, HARRY POTTER) discovers that her husband of forty years is having an affair with her best friend, she seeks refuge in London with her estranged, older sister Bif (Celia Imrie – BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL). The two could not be more different – Sandra is a fish out of water next to her outspoken, serial dating, free-spirited sibling. But different is just what Sandra needs at the moment, and she reluctantly lets Bif drag her along to a community dance class, where gradually she starts finding her feet and romance as she meets her sister’s friends. This colorful, defiant and energetic group start to show Sandra that retirement is in fact only the beginning, and that divorce might just give her a whole new lease on love and life.” (Roadside Attractions) Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Last Thursday’s premiere (and its encore screening) of WE’RE DOING FINE was fantastic. Audiences loved seeing Dayton all aglow on the big screen, and we’ve had several requests to play the film one more time during the day. So we’ve added a screening – you’ll have one more chance to catch it at THE NEON. We will screen WE’RE DOING FINE on Saturday, May 12 at Noon, and tickets are just $7.50 each. LIVES WELL LIVED celebrates the incredible wit, wisdom and experiences of adults aged 75 to 100. Through their intimate memories and inspiring personal histories encompassing over 3000 years of experience, forty people share their secrets and insights to living a meaningful life. These men and women open the vault on their journey into old age through family histories, personal triumph and tragedies, loves and losses – seeing the best and worst of humanity along the way. Their stories will make you laugh, perhaps cry, but mostly inspire you.” (Shadow Distribution) Director Sky Bergman will be here for this special one-time screening on Sunday, May 13 at 3:00. This year’s unique films range from animation to fictional drama, covering topics such as women’s health, body image, relationships, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. From the comedy of a young Indian-American woman who wants to follow her dreams to the harrowing first-person account of a young girl’s escape from Boko Haram, each story will inspire and enlighten. All proceeds from LUNAFEST will go to the Ohio Domestic Violence Network and to Chicken & Egg Pictures, a nonprofit organization that supports women nonfiction filmmakers whose artful and innovative storytelling catalyzes social change. The festival is sponsored locally by Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance. Tickets are $10.00 ($5.00 students) with donations over this amount gratefully accepted. Tickets can be purchased in advance for this popular one-time showing which sold out last year.” (Dayton Women’s Rights Alliance) Tickets available now at THE NEON’s Box Office or via this LINK. SICSA Assists Florida with Dogs Displaced by Hurricane Irma

September 26, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Staff from the SICSA Pet Adoption Center traveled to the Licking County Humane Society on Saturday, September 23 to help rescue efforts as a result of Hurricane Irma. The SICSA team, along with the Cleveland Animal Protection League, met the Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team who had transported 19 dogs from the Charleston Animal Society in order to make room for homeless animals displaced after Hurricane Irma.

The SICSA Pet Adoption Center is currently caring for and will have 6 of the 19 dogs up for adoption. Two of them are available for adoption today – Charleston and Cleopatra. The other four are awaiting medical check-ups.

“The response to both hurricanes from the animal welfare community has been tremendous”, states SICSA Executive Director Nora Vondrell. “To be able to take some of the burden of caring for, and eventually finding homes for these pups, has been very rewarding for staff and volunteers who have wanted to help since the first hurricane made landfall”, states Vondrell.

Vondrell and the SICSA team have been on standby to help with the transport of animals displaced by both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They have also assisted by collecting monetary donations to give to the shelters most affected in Houston and across Florida.

“The animal welfare community learned many lessons after Hurricane Katrina”, replied Vondrell. “One of the hardest to carry out was waiting until we were called up to help. Many of us wanted to immediately dispatch teams and send physical supplies such as food, leashes, crates, etc. However, we didn’t want to create work and an eventual rotting mess with which those already exhausted would have to deal. Now, our community can help further by finding homes for these Charleston pups so we can help more down the road”, concludes Vondrell.

Families interested in meeting and potentially adopting one of the Charleston dogs can do so by visiting the SICSA Pet Adoption Center at 2600 Wilmington Pike in Kettering.

There will be several food options available, as well as canine entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. And don’t forget the RUFFle Raffle, where you can enter to win a $3,000 gift card to Elizabeth Diamond Company! Tickets for this terrific raffle item will be available for purchase  on event day (you can also purchase some when you register!). Raffle ticket prices are $5 each, $10 for three, or $20 for seven.

LYL2They will also have several human and furry friend contests you can participate in while you are awaiting course awards. Fun contests include Best Dressed Human/Pet Pair, Oldest Present SICSA Alumnus, and a Dog Talent Contest.

LYL3 You may register individually or as a team. In addition to awarding prizes to runners in several different categories (best times by race length, age, and with dog), SICSA also awards the largest fundraisers in team and individual divisions.  Teams of 6 or more receive a free upgrade to an athletic performance t-shirt, a $5 value per participant!

LYL4For more information on fundraising, the course map, schedule of events and to register, please visit www.sicsa.org/liftyourleg. For additional information about Lift Your Leg, please contact Development Coordinator Julie Crusenberry at (937) 294-6505 ext. 15 or  jcrusenberry@sicsa.org.
