Marion's Piazza

Dave Portnoy’s “One Bite” Pizza Reviews For Dayton

March 30, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

David Portnoy is an American blogger and founder of the sports and popular culture blog Barstool Sports. One Bite with Davey Pageviews is an internet show that Portnoy created, which consists of him reviewing pizza restaurants around the world ranking them for 0 to 10.

In town for the NCAA basketball he asked on Twitter for pizza recommendations in Dayton to do his One Bite reviews. His first  visit was to the  the Marion’s Piazza on Shroyer.

“This is Midwest pizza,” said Portnoy after tasting a corner piece. “The thin, like crispy — which I’m starting to grow to appreciate if you do it right.”

He continued on, trying another piece and commenting on the little grease and sizes of the slices. “I actually like this,” he said. “I’m gonna score this higher than people think. I’ll go 7.4.”

Next he went on to visit Old Scratch Pizza‘s downtown location. He shares that this was the most recommended spot from his online survey.  Not normally a fan of Neapolitan pizza, but owner Eric Soller points out that their pizza is “Midwestern Neapolitan.”  He rated this cheese pizza a 7.7 and said “Old Scratch be proud of yourself.”

He even posed for photo’s with the Old Scratch crew:

Jo, GM, Eric the owner, Dave Portnoy and Erin, Director of Operations.

His parting comment, “Dayton, I’ve gone to two places and I would go back to both happily.” To see more of his One Bite Review, check him out on YouTube.

In 1965, a local theater company initiated Summer Stock, bringing in big-name celebs to star in a play for 12 weeks. Each week of the production, from 1965 to 1995, Marion’s hosted the cast party, serving up pies to hundreds of entertainers—including Betty White, Mickey Rooney, Barbara Eden, Joan Rivers and Zsa Zsa Gabor—whose photos now fill the walls. Over the decades, Marion’s steadily expanded to nine locations, each with seating for hundreds, while maintaining a focus on quality ingredients, edge-to-edge toppings, and warm service and ambience.

In his later years, Glass became a philanthropist supporting causes across the community.  Sponsoring the city of Dayton Fireworks,  Chaminade Julienne High School’s athletic facility, which opened in August 2016, is named Roger Glass Stadium and most recently The University of Dayton’s first building dedicated to visual and performing arts which will be named for the 1967, president and CEO of Marion’s Piazza.

The Roger Glass Center for the Arts, at the southeast corner of Main and Stewart streets, will elevate the arts on campus and provide greater connection with the Dayton community through concerts, dance and theater performances, and art exhibits featuring students, faculty, visiting artists, and community members. DAYTON LGBT FILM FEST Heading Into 12th Year!

September 4, 2017 By Jonathan McNeal

What do Bette Midler, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, Laura Linney, Ian McKellen and Laverne Cox all have in common? They all have films playing at The Dayton LGBT Film Festival this year!

Titles are locked down, marketing materials are ready to go, and visiting artists are securing their travel plans for The 12th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Fest – taking place next month at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

During the weekend of Oct. 13-15, the festival will screen 17 films (a combination of shorts and features) with ties to the LGBT community – ranging from American comedies to International dramas…from narratives to documentaries. Directors, stars and other creative individuals from a handful of the selections are slated to attend.

One special guest will be Jill Alexander, an accomplished actress and co-star of SENSITIVITY TRAINING (pictured above on the left). The committee selected the film from over 100 submissions this year and was unaware (until after booking the film) that Alexander grew up right here in the Miami Valley and attended Beavercreek High School. The festival is thrilled to bring Alexander back home to share her work with the community and her family.

On Friday, October 13, attendees of the Opening Night Film FREAK SHOW will be invited to the Opening Night Party at The Mudlick Tavern – just a few blocks from THE NEON. For $8, guests will see the movie and then enjoy a complimentary cocktail and appetizers – this is certain to be a very hot ticket.

Though festival passes sold out in record time this year, patrons will have a chance to get single tickets for each of the screenings beginning Friday, September 8. Details about the films and how to get tickets can be found on the official site – www.daytonlgbt.com

Sponsors for this year’s festival include PFLAG Dayton, The Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus, Sue Spiegel & Lisa Hanauer, The Human Race Theatre Company, Miami Valley Fair Housing, AARP Ohio, The Greater Dayton LGBT Center, MJ’s On Jefferson, Johnny Dangerously, Equitas Health, David Lauri, Square Once Salon & Spa, Marion’s Piazza, Ken Byers, Kurt Fleagel & Warren Riffle, and Westminster Financial.

THE NEON is located at 130 E. 5th St in downtown Dayton. For additional information, visit the official site – www.daytonlgbt.com – or call THE NEON at (937)222-8452.

Marion’s Piazza’s 52nd Anniversary Sale Starts Today!

July 9, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

On August 19, 1965, after investing his life savings, Marion Glass opened a pizza restaurant at 460 Patterson Road in Dayton Ohio called Marion’s Piazza.

Marion’s Piazza

When Marion opened his restaurant, it was a first for pizza establishments in Dayton, as he offered seating for over 200 customers in his dining room (all other pizza parlors at that time only offered carryout service with no inside dining).

Marion selected the name Marion’s Piazza because he liked the idea of an outdoor cafe but realized that this concept would not be successful in Ohio’s climate.

Marion therefore, successfully brought the outdoors inside with an Italian piazza, or courtyard, and thus the name Marion’s Piazza was born.

Marion developed a thin crust pizza (now often referred to as “Dayton Style” pizza). conversationGlass-314x400By using only the finest ingredients on his pizzas, sandwiches, pastas and salads, Marion’s Piazza soon became a Dayton favorite!

To date, Marion’s Piazza has been voted “Dayton’s Best Pizza” in over 37 local newspaper and magazine surveys and has been rated “Second In The Nation of Independent Pizza Establishments” in Pizza Today Magazine.

Over the years, Marion’s Piazza has grown to nine locations in the Dayton area. Since dine-in has always been king at Marion’s Piazza (the nine locations seat between 275 to over 500 each), the restaurants have been a gathering place for sports teams, birthday celebrations, reunions, graduation parties and anniversary celebrations.

A longstanding relationship with Kenley Players Summer Theater from 1966 through 1995 brought many of Hollywood’s best known stars to Dayton and to Marion’s Piazza; stars like Frankie Avalon, Mickey Rooney, Joel Gray and Sally Field to name a few.

Daytonians Rob Lowe and Martin Sheen still frequent Marion’s Piazza when in Dayton. Of the over 250 Hollywood Stars to dine at Marion’s Piazza, Henry Winkler drew the largest crowd in 1975 when over 2,000 people made reservations to see him.

Marion’s Piazza has shipped thousands of its pizzas throughout the United States to former customers who have moved from the Dayton area. Even actress Pam Dawber, author John Jakes and singer Phyllis McGuire have had pizzas sent to them.

Although Marion’s Piazza founder Marion Glass, passed away in 2006 at the age of 92, the business continues to be owned by the Glass family and run by Marion’s son Roger Glass. Today, Marion’s Piazza is still serving its award winning pizzas the way it has for the past 52 years!

To celebrate their 52nd anniversary, Marion’s will be offering 52% off pizza’s with a coupon on July 9th- 13th.   According to Marion’s website you can get the coupon in the Dayton Daily News and also on the Local Flavor app and in the local reach magazine

Festival Passes have sold out, but single tickets remain for The 8th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Festival – scheduled for Oct. 11, 12 & 13 at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

The exciting weekend will kick off on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 with G.B.F. – sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa. From the maker of JAWBREAKER comes another hysterical satire of high school clique culture – this time focusing on the latest fashion accessory – the G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend). Attendees will be invited to the Opening Night Party at CADC on the corner of East 4th and St. Clair – where they’ll be greeted with complimentary appetizers from Roost Modern Italian and live music by Sandy & Michael Bashaw. The opening night party is sponsored by Sue Spiegel and Lisa Hanauer.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6DJSGrfNbk’]

On Saturday, the films will continue at 1:00 with BRIDEGROOM – sponsored by PFLAG Dayton. This touching documentary recounts a romance between a young couple…and how one man was forbidden from attending the funeral of his lover. (This documentary started as a youtube video called “It Could Happen To You” – which has attracted close to 4 million viewers.)

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lhsXr2jbkg’]

Always a festival favorite, at 3:00, TOP DRAWER SHORTS will showcase the latest and best in short films from across the country and around the world. This program is sponsored by The Human Race Theatre Company’s production of “Torch Song Trilogy.”  Below is the trailer for DIK.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry1wypccGQg’]

REACHING FOR THE MOON, a beautiful period piece, chronicles the long-lasting love affair between poet Elizabeth Bishop and architect Lota de Macedo Soares. This film has won numerous audience awards and has played at prestigious film festivals around the world. It is sponsored by The Greater Dayton LGBT Center and starts at 7:15 on Saturday evening.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27YqB_UZ9u8′]

Later on Saturday night, the festival will play a fresh and fun documentary about the cult legend and John Waters favorite – I AM DIVINE. Sponsored by MJ’s Café & Johnny, this film will begin at 9:45.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJqw0hTAhXY’]

On Sunday afternoon, the festival will continue with THE NEW BLACK at 3:00. This film, sponsored by The Miami Valley Fair Housing Association, tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights…and it has a local connection. Steve Bognar of Yellow Springs shot a portion of this film!

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX4XiTSuuF0′]

The closing film – THE HAPPY SAD – will screen on Sunday, October 13 at 5:15. In the age of polyamory and blurred lines of sexuality, what really makes for a happy relationship? Two young couples in New York – one black and gay, one white and heterosexual – find themselves intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy in this captivating new film directed by Rodney Evens (Brother to Brother). Sponsored by Marion’s Piazza, this wonderful film has been playing at film festivals all summer.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmb5_S_DNmI’]

In addition to a line-up of critically acclaimed new films from across the country and around the world, this year’s movie-goers will be treated introductions and Q&A’s from at least two visiting filmmakers.

Darren Stein, director of the Opening Night Film G.B.F., will be flying in from Los Angeles. Last week, G.B.F. screened in Atlanta, and he’ll be off to Austin after the Dayton premiere. In addition to film and television work in California, one of Stein’s well-known films, JAWBREAKER, is currently being turned into a musical in NYC.

Guy Shalem, the award-winning director of the short film SOMETHING REAL, will also attend the festival. SOMETHING REAL is a celebrity packed short with a musical twist about today’s contemporary bar scene. The film marks Shalem’s first collaboration with Tony award winning composer and lyricist Jeff Marx (AVENUE Q) and 5-time Grammy-award winning producer, composer and lyricist, Mervyn Warren. Shalem has heard great things about the film community in Dayton, and he’s excited to get to town.

The Dayton LGBT Film Festival wishes to extend a special thanks to AIDS Resource Center Ohio for their sponsorship and assistance in bringing these filmmakers to town.  Additional sponsors include Ken Byers, Kurt Fleagle & Warren Riffle, and Chase Whiteside.

The Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival presents films that have thematic ties to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community – stories that aren’t often represented or celebrated in mainstream media. This year’s selections were picked from over 100 films, and though many of these films will not find mainstream distribution, they are strong pieces of work that merit being seen by a wider audience. The festival encourages film lovers from around the Miami Valley to support these strong films.

Single tickets – just $8 each – are moving fast.

THE NEON is located at 130 E. 5th Street in downtown Dayton. For more information about the festival, including full descriptions, links to official sites & trailers, and ticketing details, please visit www.daytonlgbt.com.
