TIFF Day #3 – 2024

Today was busier than I had initially planned.  When I wasn’t able to score a ticket to the new Mike Leigh film (HARD TRUTHS), I ended up booking tickets to two films that were a little further down on my list.  In addition, I ran into a colleague in distribution who invited me to a party – so That meant that I had four films and 2 parties instead of three films and 1 party…but things can change on a dime (I’m not complaining).

My first film of the day was one I had been waiting for – ANORA, dir Sean Baker (USA) “This Palme d’Or winner follows a turbulent relationship between a New York–based exotic dancer and the son of a Russian oligarch.”  We’ve played Baker’s work in the past at THE NEON – RED ROCKET and THE FLORIDA PROJECT…and this is certainly one to watch with a lot of early award season buzz. Despite the rambunctious and exuberant nature of the first hour, there’s always a feeling of sadness under the surface. Baker’s work is very sex positive and he doesn’t judge his protagonists, but you can feel that Anora really wants more than she’s got. VARIETY wrote that this film makes PRETTY WOMAN look like a Disney movie.”  (Quite interestingly…it was.  It was made by Touchstone Pictures – a subsidiary of Disney in the 1980’s.) This film has lots of laughs, lots of sex, and lots of heartache.  It’s rough and subversive – but you’ll fall for Anora. Mikey Madison in the lead role is quite a discovery.

Next up was something I hadn’t necessarily planned to see – SKETCH, dir Seth Worley (USA) “When a young girl’s peculiar drawings come to life, leaving a wake of chaos and crayon dust, a grieving family has to band together to fight them off in this feature debut.” (taken from TIFF catalog) The screenplay for this film is great right of the bat – it feels honest and genuine.  But I have to admit that I started to roll my eyes a bit when the monsters came to life…they just seemed a little too silly for the world that had been set up for us.  But I stuck with it…and I’m glad I did.  I had a true emotional response to this little gem, and the kids were fantastic.
The director introduced this film as “INSIDE OUT meets JURASSIC PARK,” and the curator from TIFF who introduced it said we haven’t seen a group of kids work together like this since THE GOONIES.  I agree with both sentiments.   (The Q&A had me in tears when one of the cast members was asked how he related to his character.). I’m not sure where this will land, but I can see audiences getting behind it.

My next film was a surprise ticket – K-POPS, dir Anderson .Paak (USA) “A father hopes to ride the coattails of his long-lost son’s rocketing stardom in this feature debut from eight-time Grammy winner Anderson .Paak.”  This polished film had a very invested audience…and many of the people on screen who elicited cheers and screams from the audience were actors/performers I don’t know (I knew folks like Earth, Wind & Fire, but I didn’t know the K-pop icons). Though the film is really about a father connecting with the son he never knew, the setting of a “reality” talent/gameshow couldn’t be further from a setting that interests me.  Though there was a lot of talent on display, I wasn’t fully invested in the story.  And though know there’s an audience for this film (I was surrounded by people who adored it), the movie (with moments of slapstick and some animation and montage scenes that seemed like fluff and filler instead of motivated plot devices) wasn’t really for me.

Before I went to my last film of the day, I stopped by Searchlight’s NIGHBITCH PARTY – a reception celebrating the premiere of the new Amy Adams’ film NIGHTBITCH (which I will hopefully see tomorrow).  I mingled with and met people who curate other cinemas and film festivals, and I chatted with one of the actors from the film.  Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy and others were at the party and posed for a few photos with the little boys who played her child in the film.  I only stayed for about an hour because I head to get to the film I’ve been most excited to see.

The last film of the day was my most anticipated – THE ROOM NEXT DOOR, dir Pedro Almodovar (Spain) “Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore star in this visually exquisite and intimate adaptation of What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez, Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature.” I’m anxious to see this film again.  The story centers around two friends who are reunited after years apart…and how one of them asks the other to be “in the room next door” when she decides to take her own life instead of enduring another round of what seems like unhopeful Cancer treatment.  This film is full of references – to art, literature, film and event Almodovar’s own work (I found references to TALK TO HER, WOMEN ON THE VERGE, and PAIN AND GLORY – and I’m sure I’ll see more with another viewing). Sadly, Pedro was not in attendance…but he had good reason – only hours before, he won the Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival…so he was in Italy accepting that award.  That said, Tilda, Julianne and John Turturro were there.  Their Q&A was pretty wonderful.  And even though a couple people asked seemingly inane questions, the ladies were able to steer their responses into philosophical and moving responses.
Almodovar films are known their production design, and Tilda said that most of the sets incorporate things from Pedro’s own apartment…the films really do seem like extensions  of his worldview and personal surroundings.
Tilda corrected one audience member when being asked about euthanasia.  She said, this film isn’t about euthanasia, it’s about someone taking their own life into their own hands and dying with dignity.  It was a powerful night.

I had one more party to stop at…but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  It’s already 1:00, and I knew I wanted to get this posted before too late.  I also just needed some quiet time after such a strong film.

TIFF Bound! Submerging In Cinema!

Thanks so much for checking in.  I’m making a list and checking it twice…and three times…and four times…all in an effort to squeeze in as many films as possible from the 50+ films I’d like to see over the next several days at The Toronto International Film Fest.  In the end, I’ll only have room for 30-35 screenings, so some films will have to wait.

It’s early morning on Wednesday, Sept. 4, and I’m about to head to the airport.  When I get to Toronto, I’ll head right to the industry hub where I’ll get my credentials for the festival.  My pass will allow me to see a handful of public screenings (those are the ones with directors & stars in attendance with interesting Q&A’s) as well as numerous press and industry screenings (which are generally no-frills – but full of folks like me as well as some high profile journalists and studio execs…all kinds of people from the industry).

I’m staying in a condo just a couple blocks from the middle of everything,  and I’m very excited about several films…and it’s always fun to discover films I didn’t know I needed to see.

Here are couple titles I’m excited about:

THE ROOM NEXT DOOR – Pedro Almodovar’s English-language feature film debut – starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.  If you’ve read my blog and newsletters before, you might know that Almodovar is my favorite director of all time.  I can’t wait for this one.  It just received a 17-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week.

WE LIVE IN TIME – the new film from John Crowley (director of BROOKLYN) – starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.  I think this film looks lovely, and I’m a big fan of BROOKLYN.

MISÉRICORDE, the new film from Alain Guiraudie (director of STRANGER BY THE LAKE) is on my list as well.

In addition to movies, I’ll get to sit in on an interview with Cate Blanchett at an event called IN CONVERSATION: CATE BLANCHETT.  I’ve been a fan for years (and there was even that time when I was a co-worker of sorts)…so I’m anxious to see her in this scenario.

Every day, I’ll take notes when I’m seeing movies.  I’ll assemble those notes each night and publish my posts.  This serves as a way for me to get my thoughts down on a daily basis…and to take you along for the ride.

TIFF Day #3 – 2023

Just three screenings today…but a solid day.  It’s hard to believe that 3 days have flown by so quickly.  I’ve seen 11 films, spent time with Jake (before he returned to Dayton earlier today) run into a handful of old friends and colleagues on the street, watched a movie with a filmmaker whose work we’ve screened at OUT HERE DAYTON FILM FEST (formerly known as The Dayton LGBT Film Fest), and still managed to keep up with this blog.  That said, I have yet to do the whole late night party scene…things have changed a bit since I’ve been gone – the festival and myself.

My first film was made in Montreal.  SOLO, dir. Sophie Dupois (Canada). “Set in Montreal’s vivacious drag scene, this tender character study from writer-director Sophie Dupuis (Underground) focuses on a talented young performer whose past and present merge in unexpected ways.” (TIFF Catalog) Simon is a successful makeup artist and drag performer, but when a Oliver, new guy shows up in the dressing room, he sets his eyes on something new.  At first, the chemistry is wonderful – but eventually we realize that Simon is willing to compromise himself for what he thinks he needs in his life..and Oliver is a master manipulator.  This film is well done with great, fleshed out performances…and full of people I “know.”

HIS THREE DAUGHTERS, dir. Azazel Jacobs (USA). “A tense, captivating, and touching portrait of family dynamics starring Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne as sisters who converge after their father’s health declines.” (TIFF Catalog) What this film lacks in visual appeal (there are some very strange choices about shooting people up against a blank wall), it makes up for in screenplay and performances.  This little gem’s third act is terrific…and the claustrophobia of being in a relatively small New York apartment for the majority of the film works on a lot of levels in creating tension and drama.  These women are all terrific.

IN CONVERSATION WITH PEDRO ALMODOVAR (with screening of STRANGE WAY OF LIFE, dir. Pedro Almodovar (SPAIN)).  Today’s event with Almodovar was a treat.  Almodovar talked with Cameron Bailey for about 45 minutes about his career – and it was insightful and delightful.  He talked about the “transition” from screwball comedies to melodrama and the industry’s rating system.  Then he screened the short film STRANGE WAY OF LIFE – a gay Western with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal…which Almodovar explained was his sort of answer to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (which he had been asked to direct years ago).  “Two lovers reunite after 25 years apart, but secret ulterior motives threaten to spoil the relationship, in this emotional western from Pedro Almodóvar.” (TIFF Catalog)  Pedro then returned to the stage to talk for a bit more before taking questions from the audience.  Sadly, there wasn’t much time for questions and I didn’t get to ask mine.  (Almodovar apologized to the audience that neither of the lead actors would be seen naked in the film.)

 

I’m about to head out and meet one of our Board members for a cocktail this evening.  Susan and her husband are at the festival for the first time, and I’m anxious to hear what they’re seeing and how they like their experience so far.

Returning to Toronto International Film Fest – 4 Years Later!

It’s been 4 years since I’ve made the trip to Toronto for TIFF (The Toronto International Film Festival), and my soul has truly missed it.  I know that this year will be very different.  Not only has COVID changed how festivals work, the ongoing writer & actor strikes will also likely change the energy at this year’s festival.  Regardless, I’m anxious to go and submerge myself in multiple screenings of international cinema for 9 days.

I’m feeling a little out of practice, but I hope to update you every day with details about the films I’m seeing, the Q&A’s I’m observing and the glitterati I’m spotting.  I’m not sure how many parties will be happening this year, but I hope to pop in on a couple.

For industry folks, the fest works a little different.  I will have an opportunity to see 10 films with the general public.  These are the screenings where directors, producers and stars might walk the Red Carpet and be interviewed for television.  When people think “glamorous film festivals,” these are the screenings that come to mind.  That said, the majority of the films I screen will be in multiplex settings with other press and industry folks.  I might get sandwiched between an international sales agent on one side and someone writing for HOLLYWOOD REPORTER on the other.  It’s fun to rub elbows with a variety of people who make this industry tick.

I already have a handful of tickets to screenings and events.  In addition to the premiere of NORTH STAR on Opening Night (the directorial debut of Kristin Scott Thomas – starring Scarlett Johansson), Taika Waititi’s latest NEXT GOAL WINS and the anticipated feature WILDCAT (directed by Ethan Hawke and produced by Dayton’s own Karri O’Reilly), I’m so delighted that I scored a ticket to IN CONVERSATION WITH PEDRO ALMODOVAR – a sit down interview (Charlie Rose-style – but in front of an audience)  with my favorite filmmaker of all time!

I’ll try to stay on top of updating this blog on a daily basis after my first day of movie watching.  (Screenings start on Sept. 7 – and I’ll have a full day!)  I’ll screen films through the 15th and head back to Dayton on the 16th.

TIFF 2019 – Day #2

Hello Dayton NEON Fans!

Today was my second day, and I’m calling it an early night…in bed by 11:00.  It has been a wonderful and emotional day.  I was delighted to see my all-time favorite director just steps away from my seat.  (This wasn’t the first time I’ve seen Almodovar, but it’s been several years…and tonight’s film will be a stand-out for the festival as well as the year.)  I quickly snapped the picture to the left.

RADIOACTIVE was my first film of Day #2.  “Based on Lauren Redniss’s award-winning graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi’s (Persepolis) biopic stars Rosamund Pike as two-time Nobel Prize–winning scientist Marie Curie, highlighting the groundbreaking discoveries she made with her husband, Pierre (Sam Riley).” (taken from TIFF catalog)  This film gave a great historical background on Curie and posed a lot of interesting questions (through the use of flash-forwards to historical nuclear events) as to whether her discoveries and work were “for good” or ultimately the destruction of societies.  Though not without some wonderful moments that were both enlightening and even powerful, this film seemed rather clunky with its attempts to keep it “fresh and modern” while telling a very true story about an incredible woman.

VARDA BY AGNES “The last film from the late French New Wave filmmaker Agnès Varda (Faces Places) traces her legendary career and life with characteristic humour and vibrant energy, presenting a portrait of an artist who lived through her films and revealed the extraordinary in the ordinary.” (taken from TIFF catalog) This film, largely assembled from numerous lectures/master classes from recent years, is a long-form, cinematic essay as to how and why Varda worked.  It’s full of wonderful moments, incredible artistry and ultimately a realization that there’s so much more of her work for me to discover.   There was a lovely post-screening discussion with three women working in the industry…one being Lulu Wang, director of THE FAREWELL – who had incredibly insightful and inspiring things to say about Agnes and particularly THE GLEANERS AND I (a film that truly resonates with me, too).  Though I don’t see this film getting a traditional release, I would love to bring it for a couple special screenings. PAIN AND GLORY “An aging filmmaker (Antonio Banderas) grapples with an uncertain future and the circumstances that shaped his successful but troubled life, in Pedro Almodóvar’s self-reflexive consideration of identity and desire.” (taken from TIFF catalog)  This gorgeous new film starring Antonio Banderas as well as other Almodovar favorites like Penelope Cruz Cecilia Roth, is a true winner – with the trademark Almodovar touches like a great score and incredible production design.  It’s about recalling childhood, dealing with physical and mental pain, and the return of an old lover.  I got emotional several times during this film, and I think we’ll be seeing it on some level this Oscar season.  Almodovar and Banderas were in attendance.  They gave a very moving and fun curtain speech and then returned to the stage after the screening for an insightful Q&A.  For various reasons, there were tears throughout the evening, and Almodovar is always a charming and appreciative festival guest.  I’m so glad I got to see him in conjunction with this wonderful film – which received a very long and heartfelt standing ovation.

I’ve got a few films tomorrow and will meet up with a couple different folks throughout the day.  Looking forward to perhaps one more night of good sleep before some of the crazy long nights begin.

Preparing for The Toronto International Film Festival

I’m leaving early tomorrow morning for Toronto…a favorite part of my job.

I’m so glad I can use this platform to once again report back home (as well as sort my thoughts) regarding my time and screenings at The Toronto International Film Festival. There are over 300 films to chose from over the next several days, and I have secured several tickets for films that I’m greatly anticipating.

Though my screening schedule is never 100% locked down, here are trailers for a handful of films that I’m excited to see:

2 New Films, 2 “Best Actresses” at THE NEON

We’re moving along in a big way this weekend. If you still need to see LA LA LAND – now the highest grossing film in THE NEON’s history – Thursday will be your last chance to catch it with us. If you still need to see 20TH CENTURY WOMEN, Sunday will be your last chance to catch this gem at THE NEON. On Friday, we will open two very different films that have something in common. JACKIE and ELLE both have lead performances that have been nominated for “Best Actress” at this year’s Academy Awards. Natalie Portman gives an incredible performance as Jackie Kennedy – one that has garnered her numerous awards this season. Isabelle Huppert, one of my favorite actresses, has never been nominated for an Oscar before (which is hard to believe given her stunning body of work) – but she just won “Best Actress” and ELLE also took home “Best Foreign Film” at this year’s Golden Globes.

TIFF 2016 – Day #4

I’m up to my old TIFF tricks now.  Long days/nights…minimal sleep.

My first film today was The Weinstein Company’s big Oscar hopeful for this year – LION, directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel.  This is the story of a little Indian boy who gets lost in the streets of Calcutta – hundreds of miles away from home.  After eventually being adopted by an Australian family, 20+ years later he begins a trip to find his birth family.  Once again, I found myself interested in trimming this film down.  Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I’m watching dozens of movies…but I’m finding most material would be better if trimmed down.  This film shouldn’t be 2 Hrs & 10 Min…it should be 20-30 minutes shorter.  That said, what it accomplishes is indeed lovely, and the story is wonderful.  The final bit of archival footage at the end resulted in even more tears.

I met up with a friend to catch the next film on my list – A UNITED KINGDOM, directed by Amma Asante (director of BELLE).  This is the film about the relationship between Seretse Khama (a former African royal) and his wife Ruth Williams.  Being a black man, alarm bells go up on each side of the fence when he courts and eventually asks for a white Englishwoman’s hand in marriage.  This film feels old-fashioned in a good way.  The storytelling is very direct – nothing edgy here, just solid storytelling, and I came away feeling as though I’d just had a good (and entertaining) history lesson.  David Oyelowo is fantastic as Khama – his speeches are particularly moving and seem like they could stand alone as inspirational messages about race and patriotism.  Rosamund Pike plays Williams, and she’s lovely as usual.

After lunch with a friend from Dayton I hadn’t seen in almost a decade – who now works at Almo Drafthouse (in Austin), I took a little nap before heading to my two evening screenings.  Next up was a film I had already seen at an exhibitor screening.  I almost never see a film at TIFF that I’ve already seen…but because I got a tip that Pedro Almodovar was in town, I got a ticket to JULIETA.  Unfortunately, the tip was some bad intel. He wasn’t there. That said, I had tweeted a hopeful message that I wished Rossy de Palma would attend…and imagine my giddiness when she was introduced – her first time to Toronto.  The film was even better with a second viewing – it’s richness in color and layers of storytelling all the richer.  This is the story of a woman who decides to stay in Madrid in hopes that her daughter will return – someone who left her side 20 years before.  With an exceptional score and great performances (Julieta is played by three different actresses in different stages of her life), this film is lovely.  It’s hard to let an Almodovar film stand on its own without comparison.  When compared to his other work, it falls short of being one of Almodovar’s masterpieces…if it stood alone, it would be heralded as superb.  And P.S.  The Q&A was delightful…and Rossy was so funny, warm and personable. I got my picture taken with her at the stage door, and my day was made!

Tom Ford’s second feature film NOCTURNAL ANIMALS was my final film of the day.  I’ve been waiting 7 years since A SINGLE MAN to see what Tom Ford would do next, and this new film is exceptional!  Starring Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon, this is the story of a woman who receives an advanced reading copy of her ex-husband’s novel which is a terrifying story that hits a little too close to home.  The film uses certain visual devices to distinguish three different stories happening at once – the present story, the story of the novel and flashbacks to the relationship that spurred the novel.  The costume design, sets and photography are stunning, the performances are incredible, and the story is intense and emotional.  With a late 2016 release in store, I think this film will certainly begin to create some award buzz. (no trailer is available yet)

Toronto – Day #6 – 2013

Today is my last day of needing to wait in line for early-morning tickets…thus my last day of waking up at 6:00am.  How refreshing!

In addition to seeing 3 films yesterday, I got to hang out with a dear friend, Bill Taylor, who I met in line at a screening of TALK TO HER (one of my favorite Almodovar films) back in 2002 (my first year at TIFF).  Bill just completed his first feature film (which I will soon get a chance to see), and we have played 2 of his short films at the Dayton LGBT Film Festival over the years.  It was great to catch up.

VIOLETTE was the first film of the day, and it made me want to go out and pick up a bundle of books.  This is a film about Violette Leduc and how she became a well-known author.  A large portion of the film focuses on her relationship with Simone de Beauvoir, and several other renowned French authors work their way into the narrative.  The film is gorgeously directed by Martin Provost – director of SERAPHINE (if you haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it – available via netflix, etc.), and it’s a wonderful story of self-discovery through writing.

IDA, perhaps the most visually stunning film I’ve seen this year, is a lovely, quiet film (shot in black & white in a 1:37 aspect ratio (which means it appears more like a square than a rectangle)).  A young Catholic girl – about to take her vows as a nun – goes into the city to meet her aunt for the first time.  During the trip, she discovers her true roots and the life she had before being brought to the convent.  I loved this film.

TOM AT THE FARM is the new film by Xavier Dolan.  Based on a play, this is the first time Dolan has directed material that was in-part written by someone else…and it works.  I felt that Dolan’s last film suffered from its length – this one feels just right.  Tom visits the family of his recently deceased lover, and the mother didn’t know of her son’s homosexuality.  Very different in tone from Dolan’s first three films, this is a psychological thriller that becomes rather creepy.  Though I questioned a couple script choices, I ultimately really liked this film.  (The clip below doesn’t do the film justice…but at least you’ll get a small glance.)

I’M SO EXCITED – Almodovar’s Latest & BIG LENS News at THE NEON!

Tomorrow (Fri, Aug 16), we will open the new film from my favorite director Pedro Almodovar – I’M SO EXCITED. This film is a return to the tone of his earlier work. It’s a sex farce that’s more in the vein of WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN than ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, but it’s certainly not without social commentary. Even though Almodovar’s work runs the gamut in regards to stories and themes, you can always tell his work by the incredible design and color palette.

Synopsis for I’M SO EXCITED: “A very varied group of people are in a precarious situation aboard a plane flying to Mexico City. A technical failure (a kind of justifiable negligence, even though it sounds contradictory, but that’s what human actions are) has endangered the lives of the passengers on Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots, hardened, experienced professionals are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could be summarized in two: sex and death.” (taken from Sony Classics) Click this LINK to visit the official site.

The FilmDayton Festival is ready to kick off next weekend with the opening night film of IN A WORLD! Film screenings will take place at THE NEON, but the festival is about a whole lot more…and it’s scheduled for August 23-25. Check out their line-up on the official site.

And speaking of FilmDayton, WSU’s Annual Big Lens Film Festival will kick off the festival this year. “The 21st Annual Big Lens Film Festival will premiere on Thursday, August 22nd at the THE NEON…Every year, Big Lens screens a selection of the very best short films to come from the Wright State University Motion Picture program, and this year is no different! Ranging from documentary to narrative, these six films cover a wide variety of subjects and emotions. There will be two screenings shown concurrently, one at 7:30pm and one at 8:00. Following the screenings, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers, emceed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Julia Reichert. Tickets to either screening are $7 each, and are now available at THE NEON. The India Foundation is also gearing up for another special screening. “When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13 years old, her family locked her up for 25 years, forbidding her to study and forcing her into marriage. During that time, words were Salma’s salvation. She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house, eventually getting them into the hands of a publisher. Against the odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet: the first step to discovering her own freedom and challenging the traditions and code of conduct in her village.” The India Foundation Celebrates One Hundred Years of Indian Cinema with this month’s selection – SALMA – the critically acclaimed documentary by Kim Longinotto – Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 12 noon. This is the first public screening in Ohio and outside the festival circuit!

Arlena and her late husband Azariah could not have children of their own, so they regularly welcomed troubled teenagers into their modest West Side home. One of those was Roger Brown. Among the greatest young basketball players in New York City history, Brown in 1961 had been unfairly implicated in a gambling scandal just as he was finishing his freshman year at the University of Dayton. Though never charged with a crime, he was kicked out of school and banned for life by the NBA. The Smiths came to the rescue. We’re moving right along at THE NEON. Though we’re holding both of our current attractions (BEFORE MIDNIGHT and THE EAST), we also had room to open a new romantic comedy that I saw at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival – LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED. On Saturday, July 6, THE NEON will host the premiere of Meladi McNair’s new film THE OMISSION. “Marissa tries to hide from her friends that she is in an unfortunate, yet common situation that afflicts many young adults. A violent, controlling relationship. Three flashbacks paint her birthday bash as the platform for a series of unfortunate events in which five long-time friends learn of her situation, and turn on each other… THE OMISSION, a dark, abuse awareness film debuts at 3 pm on July 6. The film was written and directed by Dayton’s own Meladi McNair; a Journalist and social-conscious author, artist and filmmaker. She is also the author of the anti-bullying book, ‘The Vexing.’ Tickets are $5 each.” (taken from press notes)

There’s another potential Gathr screening on the horizon. Once again, 50 tickets need to be reserved in order for the screening to be locked down. The movie is BACK TO 1942, and it’s an epic film set during a drought in China’s Henan province in 1942. The tentative screening is scheduled for July 17 at 7:30. There’s only about a week left to reserve a ticket in order to secure the screening…and right now, it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen. MELANCHOLIA Opens Friday at THE NEON!

I’m sad to report it, but THE SKIN I LIVE IN did not perform well enough to stick around for a 2nd week. If you still need to see the latest from master filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, Thursday will be your last chance to see it at THE NEON.

On Friday, we will begin the latest film from Lars von Trier (director of BREAKING THE WAVES, DANCER IN THE DARK and DOGVILLE). MELANCHOLIA has received a 100% rating from numerous sources including Entertainment Weekly, Variety, The Los Angeles Times, and the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, and Charlotte Rampling. (Dunst won “Best Actress” for this part at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.)

Synopsis for MELANCHOLIA: “In this beautiful movie about the end of the world, Justine and Michael are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister Claire, and brother-in-law John. Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships fraying. I’m certain that some of you will be happy to know that we’re trying out a couple new wines. In addition to the Woodbridge Merlot and Chardonnay, we are trying Carernet Sauvignon and Moscato. If you want to make certain that we keep these two wines in the mix, please order a glass during your next visit.

Current opening dates are moving all around. We don’t know when MY WEEK WITH MARILYN will be available in our market, and we’re disappointed that THE ARTIST has been bumped to sometime in January (which is going to be a very busy time for specialty cinemas). I’ll keep you up-to-date as best I can…that said, this e-mail is the best place for the latest details.

This Saturday marks the 2nd film in The Holiday Family Movie Series…sponsored by The Downtown Dayton Partnership, DP&L and THE NEON. Movies begin at noon and are free for children 12 and under; other tickets are only $2 each. This Saturday will be – THE POLAR EXPRESS. And next week, on December 17, we will play A CHRISTMAS STORY. All of these movies will be presented via digital video projection.

Last week, I mentioned a list of some of our friends and partners in the area, and I’d like to continue that list by thanking 2 additional businesses for their continued help and willingness to spread the word about what’s happening at THE NEON. Omega Music and MJ’s Cafe & Dance Bar always allow me to hang up posters.  Without grassroots marketing, positive word-of-mouth and community support, we’d be long gone by now. Thank you!

New Almodovar Film at THE NEON!

Hello Everyone,

Special thanks to all of you who came out over the weekend.  This was our best Thanksgiving Weekend ever, and THE DESCENDANTS is certainly a hit!!  (Interesting to note, 2nd place goes to the Thanksgiving weekend we opened AMELIE in 2001…3rd place to our Thanksgiving opening of SIDEWAYS – also Alexander Payne – back in 2004.)

If you haven’t had a chance to see MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, Thursday will be your last chance to see it at THE NEON.  On Friday, we will open the latest film by my favorite filmmaker of all time – Pedro Almodovar.  THE SKIN I LIVE IN is a melodramatic thriller that reveals itself in a brilliant way.  I sat in the front row during its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival – when the film was introduced by its stars Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya.  The film has stuck with me ever since – and I’ve grown to like it even more.  That said, I wish I hadn’t read much about it before seeing it on the big screen.  (Due to that reason, the description below will be relatively vague by comparison to the content of the film.)

Synopsis for THE SKIN I LIVE IN:  “Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years, he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed three things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. Marilia, the woman who looked after him from the day he was born, is his most faithful accomplice. And as for the human guinea pig…” (Sony Classics)   Visit the film’s official website.

As you can tell by now, the Weinstein Co. decided not to open MY WEEK WITH MARILYN in Dayton on December 2.   Right now, we don’t know their intentions for the film in this market.  Though we would certainly love to play the film, it will all be a matter of screen availability when they decide to move forward.

SENNA and LIFE, ABOVE ALL at The Neon

We’re opening two new films this weekend.  First is a documentary for which we have received numerous requests – perhaps as many as we received for BUCK.  This time, instead of a horse trainer, the subject is regarded as “the best driver who ever lived” – SENNA.  We will also open a small African film which will only play for one week.  If you’ve been to THE NEON recently, I’m almost certain you’ve seen a trailer for LIFE, ABOVE ALL – a film for which Robert Ebert gave a 100% review.

Synopsis for SENNA:  “Senna’s remarkable story, charting his physical and spiritual achievements on the track and off, his quest for perfection, and the mythical status he has since attained, is the subject of SENNA, a documentary feature that spans the racing legend’s years as an F1 driver, from his opening season in 1984 to his final, tragic race a decade later. Toronto – THE FILM – Day #4, Part 1

OK…

Once again, I find myself getting in much too late to type a full recap…so I’ll make it short and sweet…with more to come.

The Tilda Swinton Interview/Q&A was a divine experience.  The 75 minutes flew by – I could have stayed for hours!!!

BARRYMORE – a film with Christopher Plummer reprising his role as John Barrymore (from his one-man-show on Broadway) – was solid, but not cinematic enough to get a theatrical release.  I think it will make a better Masterpiece Theatre evening.

Next, I saw SHAME – the new Steve McQueen film starring Michael Fassbender.  A film about sexual addiction, this film is highly charged and quite wonderful.  Fassbender and McQueen were at the screening.  I was in the front row.  Below is a clip.

The last film I saw today was the new Pedro Almodovar film – THE SKIN I LIVE IN.  I won’t say too much…as I’m a little sad that I knew plot points before seeing the film.  The movie is 100x’s better than the trailer (which is below) – and I suggest not knowing a whole lot about the plot.  Just enjoy Pedro’s new highly stylized thriller that is both shocking and emotionally charged.  Both leads – Antonio Benderas & Elena Anaya – introduced the film.  Once again, I was in the front row!

Additional sightings…IndieWire conducted interviews in the industry lounge today with Morgan Spurlock and Emily Blunt (along with the director from YOUR SISTER’S SISTER – also known for HUMPDAY).
