DIOR & I Starts Friday and Partnering with Ghostlight Coffee at THE NEON!

June 2, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

DIOR websiteHello Everyone,

We’re adding a new film to the mix this Friday. It’s a rare, inside look into the creation of a couture collection for one of the world’s most luxurious fashion brands – Christian Dior. It’s called DIOR AND I, and it had quite a nice run at film festivals over the past year. In addition, we will hold onto both of our current selections – IRIS (for limited screenings) and FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD. For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for DIOR AND I: “Frederic Tcheng’s solo directorial debut brings the viewer inside the storied world of the Christian Dior fashion house with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons’ first haute couture collection as its new artistic director-a true labor of love created by a dedicated group of collaborators. Melding the everyday, pressure-filled components of fashion with mysterious echoes from the iconic brand’s past, the film is also a colorful homage to the seamstresses who serve Simons’ vision.” Click on the image below to visit the film’s official site.

Carol Quinones is bringing a special, one-time screening of TRACE AMOUNTS to town on Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30. Click this LINK to reserve your ticket – they’re $12.50 each. “After recovering from a sickness that would bring him to the edge of despair, Eric Gladen began researching the science behind what had made him so sick. His research led him straight into one of the biggest medical debates of all time, the question of whether or not childhood vaccines are causing Autism. He would end up quitting his career, moving into an RV, and traveling the country interviewing experts and piecing together thousands of studies and leaked documents. But Eric wasn’t focused on the vaccines themselves, he was focused on something that belongs nowhere near vaccines- mercury.”

Don’t miss the chance to see the SXSW hit documentary TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL. This film will only screen one time – Thursday, June 18 at 7:30. Tickets, just $8 each, are available now at THE NEON’s Box Office! “In the 1950s, Tab Hunter is number one at the box office and number one on the music charts. He is Hollywood’s most sought-after star and America’s boy next door. Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren are just a few of the actresses he is romantically linked to. Nothing, it seems, can damage Tab Hunter’s career. Nothing, that is, except for the fact that Tab Hunter is secretly gay. Now, Tab Hunter’s secret is out. In TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL we will meet, for the first time, the real Tab Hunter as he shares with us the whole story of a happy, healthy survivor of Hollywood’s roller coaster.”

Director Kevin Nam will be debuting his first short film on Monday, June 22. “What if you were given a chance to traverse your own subconscious? Would you be afraid of what you may see? We all have our demons kept at bay buried under the lies we tell ourselves. Keaton, a heartbroken man, is given this chance to reshape and reform his memories. With the help of Dr. Darren Vonnuxley at Entropy’s Enlightenment, Keaton is plunged deep into his own subconscious, where he must confront and conquer his demon, face to face. HOW TO MURDER YOUR MELANCHOLY is a short dark psychological drama with horror elements filmed entirely in the Dayton, Ohio region. This one and only screening of the short film is the directorial debut of local resident Kevin Nam. The director requires a mature audience due to scenes of graphic violence, blood, and gore. The director will also be in attendance for a brief Q & A immediately following the film. Please arrive early, screening will promptly begin at 8 pm. Tickets are on a first-come first-serve basis. Admission is FREE.” (taken from Kevin Nam’s press notes)

Next Friday (June 12), we will open a Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys) biopic – LOVE & MERCY. Please help us spread the word.  Click HERE to visit the official site.

Ghostlight Coffee is now in the baking business. We currently offer a delicious variety of cookies and biscotti from their brand new kitchen, and we’re so happy that we’re able to partner with another independently owned downtown business. Give them a try the next time you’re in!

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you this weekend!
Jonathan

KINGS OF SUMMER & Great News at THE NEON!

July 18, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

The-Kings-of-Summer-Poster-Art-Orange-Coming-SoonHello Everyone,

If you’ve been to THE NEON recently, you’ve more than likely seen the trailer for the Ohio-made film THE KINGS OF SUMMER. It will open on Friday, and it’s a gem. That said, it will only play for one week! If you still need to see MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING or KON-TIKI, tomorrow will be your last chance. 20 FEET FROM STARDOM will stick around for a 2nd week, but it will also wrap up on July 25. I’m delighted to announce that we have 2 new films cemented to begin on July 26 – FRUITVALE STATION (a powerful true story that was a big winner at Sundance this year…and it was art directed by Hannah Beachler – a WSU Motion Picture alum...stay tuned for more details about special Q&As with Beachler during opening weekend) and THE WAY WAY BACK (a comedic & touching hit at Sundance). For this week’s remaining showtimes, visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

ONE WEEK ONLY!! Synopsis for THE KINGS OF SUMMER:
“Premiering to rave reviews at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, THE KINGS OF SUMMER is a unique coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends – Joe, Patrick, and the eccentric and unpredictable Biaggio – who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. Free from their parents’ rules, their idyllic summer quickly becomes a test of friendship as each boy learns to appreciate the fact that family – whether it is the one you’re born into or the one you create – is something you can’t run away from.” (taken from CBS Films) This film, shot in Ohio, was produced by Tyler Davidson – producer of TAKE SHELTER! Be sure to check out the really fun website by clicking this LINK. ONE WEEK ONLY!!

“Roger Brown — the greatest basketball player Dayton has ever known — will be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame on Sept. 8. Without the love and sacrifice of 84-year-old Daytonian Arlena Smith, it wouldn’t be happening. Join us at THE NEON on Aug. 15 at 7:30 for a benefit screening of the acclaimed documentary UNDEFEATED: THE ROGER BROWN STORY, with all proceeds going toward Arlena Smith’s trip to Springfield, Mass., for Brown’s Hall of Fame induction. Arlena and her late husband Azariah could not have children of their own, so they regularly welcomed troubled teenagers into their modest West Side home. One of those was Roger Brown. Among the greatest young basketball players in New York City history, Brown in 1961 had been unfairly implicated in a gambling scandal just as he was finishing his freshman year at the University of Dayton. Though never charged with a crime, he was kicked out of school and banned for life by the NBA. The Smiths came to the rescue. They opened up their home, found Brown a job, gave him the strength to move on. And finally, Brown bloomed anew. In 1967, he became the first player of the ABA’s Indiana Pacers. He led them to three championships, and became an Indianapolis City Councilman. All along, until his death at age 54 of cancer, Brown credited the Smiths — his ‘second parents’ — for making it possible.” (taken from press notes) Mark your calendars now! Tickets, just $10 each, will be available soon.

I’ll hopefully have some details for you next week about an upcoming screening of the documentary FARMAGEDDON – slated for August 8 and hosted by the Libertarian Party.

Hope to see you this weekend!

All the best,
Jonathan

Secrets: Why Movie Theater Popcorn Tastes So Good

February 28, 2013 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Buttery Popcorn from Rave Cinemas

Buttery Popcorn from Rave Cinemas

A night at the movies can become a Food Adventure.  Envision your buttery fingers reaching again and again into a bag of addicting theater popcorn.  They charge outrageous prices for it, yet still will buy it.  The Big Ragu and Crew took a moment from munching on kernels and reaching for the giant soft drink, to ask : “Why is movie theater popcorn so good?”

We never do things half-baked, so we scoured the 4 major cinemas in the Dayton area to get to the bottom of this mystery.  Our investigation took us to the popcorn making experts at The Neon Movies, Danbarry Dollar Saver, Regal Cinemas and Rave Cinemas.  Our findings lead us to some differing opinions.

Let’s start with a local icon, The Neon Movies’ explanation of why their popcorn is so good.  They say the secret is in the canola oil.   Popping in canola oil allows for a clean taste and it is a healthier alternative to other oils.  Also, The Neon Movies pops their popcorn right before showtimes.  They feel this gives them a freshness advantage over other theaters and produces a tastier treat.  The prices are cheaper too !  The popcorn here is delicious, and served in round cups or buckets.  There is more here than just popcorn.   This Food Adventure minded theater, also serves beer, Esther Price chocolates, and specialty coffees.  If you have not visited the locally owned Neon Movies, get downtown to the corner of 5th and Stone streets, grab some corn and watch an award-winning movie.

Danbarry Cinemas also pops their popcorn in canola oil.  But Danbarry’s management feels the secret is in the buttery topping.  The staff uses these buttery topping machines to shower a glistening coating onto moviegoers’ popcorn.  Definitely something you don’t have at home.  This dollar saver theater near the Dayton Mall has great popcorn and even better movie prices.  Their “Bargain Tuesdays” offer tickets at the insane low price of $1.75.  Any other day, admission is $3.  Sure the movies are a few weeks old, but what a deal!  Also, don’t forget to take advantage of free refills of any large popcorn or soft drink.

Regal Cinemas had another take on the mystery.  Their local management said the secret is the use of coconut/canola popping oil.   No other cinemas use this combination.  They claim this mix of oil gives a base flavor that is unmatched anywhere else.  They also say their particular brand of buttery topping is key.  It is different from anything one would use at home or in any other cinema for that matter.  Regal’s employees also felt the “butter salt” adds a great finish to the masterpiece in a bag.  These cinemas, located near the Fairfield Commons Mall, feature tiered stadium seating in a 20 theater complex.  What a great way to enjoy a huge bag of popped goodness.  Again, go large and get free refills!

Rave Cinemas on Mall Woods Drive and at The Greene would tell you the secret is how they cook the popcorn.  Rave actually cooks their popcorn in an oil and butter salt mixture.  This unique method is what they claim gives their popcorn a tremendous flavor.   The reasoning is, that by adding the buttery salt to the oil before popping, the seasoning ends up perfect.  so at Rave, it is all in the preparation.  Rave is yet another cinema that offers free refills for any large popcorn or large drink purchase.  So make sure you share as it helps keep the cost down.   Also worth mentioning is the “self serve” flavored salt station.  There is also a “self serve” buttery topping machine at Rave Cinemas.  The Big Ragu practically uses this as a drinking fountain.

The Big Ragu abusing the self serve butter machine

The Big Ragu abusing the self serve butter machine

In conclusion, we were surprised to find that the secret is not the type of popcorn cinemas use.  We were also surprised that the secret is not the popping machine itself.  Why does movie theater popcorn taste so good?  It seems the style of preparation, particularly oil and seasonings is the answer to this mystery.   Each theater not only had an answer for why theater popcorn was so good, but they also answered why their particular product was better than other cinemas.  So next time you you are at a movie, grabbing a handful of buttery popcorn dashed with salt, share the mystery with your seated friend.   Smile as you reach for a swig of soda to wash it all down.   You may not know the ending of the movie, but you know the origins of that great popcorn taste.

Dayton Music Scene Celebrates Record Store Day

April 16, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro 1 Comment

Dayton MostMetro.com is a proud media sponsor for Record Store Day!

If you haven’t been keeping up with music trends in the past few years, I have some news for you: vinyl records are making a comeback. Surprising, right? I have even more news for you, then: there is an entire day devoted to vinyls and the stores that sell them. Hopefully you’re getting excited now. This Saturday, April 21st, is the fifth-annual Record Store Day, and it is a chance for Dayton’s music stores and scene to step forward and shine. (check out our calendar for complete Record Store Day schedule)

Record Store Day celebrates exactly what is in its name. The thing that is unfortunately starting to fade away with the advent of digital music. On this day, multiple artists and bands release exclusive vinyl albums and singles to independent record stores around the country (and world!), with the stores putting on live shows, various festivals, and anything else they can think of in celebration of actual physical music.

Omega Music (down in the Oregon District) and Toxic Beauty Records (out in Yellow Springs) are both getting in on the festivities. Both stores will be carrying the aforementioned exclusive Record Store Day releases, while featuring music and giveaways all day. Omega Music will have a full slew of local bands performing, including Buffalo Killers, Me & Mountains, and The Rebel Set. Toxic Beauty will be holding a performance by local band Wheels around 2PM, along with a ticket giveaway for Primus, and many other exclusives. Both Record Gallery and Feathers will also be featuring live local music.

Record stores aren’t the only ones getting into the celebrations. Other venues will be offering discounts when you bring in a receipt from any of the four stores mentioned above. Both Thai9 and Blind Bobs will be offering 50% select appetizers, while 5th Street Deli will be offering 20% off all food. Basho Apparel will be offering 10% off products with the receipts as well.

Ghettoblaster Magazine is hosting a screening of the movie Empire Records over at The Neon at 10PM, with all proceeds going toward the funding of this year’s Dayton Music Fest. Tickets for this screening will be running $6 on Record Store Day, and only $4 with a receipt from Omega, Toxic Beauty, Record Gallery, or Feathers.

Fans of music, the local scene, or just Dayton in general would be doing themselves a disservice by not checking out the festivities going on this Saturday. It’s a great chance to hit the town, listen to some local music, and start rebuilding that vinyl collection you got rid of back in the 80s. It’s going to be a great time, so don’t miss out!
