Exciting Local Music Showcase at The Brightside on Thursday, August 1st

The Brightside Music & Event Venue is known for it’s Dayton Battle of the Bands series that showcases up-and-coming local musical talent. Last year’s DBB winners, crabswithoutlegs, a 9-piece jazz fusion band, is releasing their very first vinyl record and celebrating this achievement with their friends Six Foot Blonde and Eastwood.

Six Foot Blonde is a talented powerhouse coming from Bloomington, Indiana. They’re celebrating their own album release, And Then Some, with a major regional tour across the US. This stop in Dayton at The Brightside is extra special because they get to share the stage with their musical peers.

Eastwood, from Columbus, kicks off the evening at 7:30pm. They made their Dayton debut last year to high accolades, leaving local music fans wanting more! They are back and ready to knock our socks off once again.

Crabswithoutlegs members hail from both Dayton and Columbus, and have been wowing audiences across the state. Not only did they win Dayton Battle of the Bands, they won The Ohio State University Battle of the Bands too! If you have not yet seen them perform – this is your opportunity to see what all the hype is about.

This show is a also great opportunity to stock up on new music! Skeleton Dust Records, a local record shop, is posting up at The Brightside with crabswithoutleg’s vinyl. Six Foot Blonde will have merch and music available as well. Buying original music directly from the bands is a wonderful way to support local music!

Troni Pizza & Pasta Opens Downtown

Beto and his wife Qelja are following in the family business, opening Troni’s Pizza & Pasta in the spot that formerly housed Carmen’s Deli in the Stratacache Tower on North Main Street. Beto is the son of the late Jimmy Troni, who owned Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen in Kettering and Deroma Italian Restaurant in Huber Heights. When his dad died in 2015, he moved to Florida, which is where he grew up.

He returned to Dayton in fall of 2023 where he worked with his Aunt and Uncle at Demnika’s Italiano on S. Dixie Drive in Kettering. Most recently we helped his father’s best friend Mo Jusufi open Jimmy’s Italian Cuisine at 824 E. Fifth St this past May. All while working on getting his downtown eatery open. Beto shares it took him four months to clean up and and source the equipment needed to open his place.m He shared his landlord was very helpful during this time. He says he grew up making pizza’s and when he moved back, he sold his Troni’s Pizza in Delray Beach pizza shop to his younger brother to run.

When asked Beto shared he came back to the Miami Valley because “Dayton needed good pizza.” He’s excited about being a part of the neighborhood and creating local jobs.

Troni describe his pizza as “New York Style with a hand tossed crust that looks right at you when you hold it up to eat it.” He cuts the pizza’s into 6 huge pieces that sell for $5- $8 and he’ll offer different slices each day to grab and go, from the classics like pepperoni and sausage to gourmet pizza’s like chicken, bacon ranch, Southwest Spicy Chicken, Hawaiian and more. Of course you can also order a whole pie made to order.

Beto shared that when it comes to his food he doesn’t cut corners, he uses the best ingredients, something his father taught him, that makes for the best food.

Centervill Elks Cheerleaders Liquor Raffle

Centerville Middle School Competition/Gameday Cheer squad is having a liquor raffle to raise funds for their team to attend an overnight cheer competition in January.

The Ugly Duckling 2.0

After closing down their Springfield Street location this past February, this morning at 7am Mason Schindler, Dexter Clay, also known as “Uncle Boof,” who owns Uncle Boof’s World Famous Pancake Mix and Zach Jeckering, opened the doors to their new restaurant on East Fifth Street in St. Anne’s Hill. With almost no fanfare, the eatery was packed when I visited this afternoon.

The new place will be open later and serve 6 days a week! The art on the walls is eclectic and colorful and each table also had a small dice/tee game on it to play while you are waiting on your food.

I had the Eggs N’ Stuff breakfast and added the sausage gravy to my tots and I left there stuffed! It was a lot of food for $10. Can’t wait to go back and try some of Uncle Boof’s World Famous Pancakes! They even have gluten-free waffles.

New ‘DDQ’ Video Podcast Kicks off with Dayton’s Own STAR!

If you love ARTS in Dayton…and you love video podcasts…meet DDQ, Dayton’s Drama Queens. This New Video Podcast will feature all things ARTS in Dayton. The stars of the show are Philip Drennen (yes, the one who has a show heading to NYC) and Joshua Stucky (yes, the one who created Dayton’s own RubiGirls.) The premiere features an interview with Drennen, one of the creators of ‘The Big Gay Jamboree‘ which is headed to the Orpheum theater in NYC this September!

D937: WOW Philip!! This is amazing news. Congrats. Tell us, what was your part in all of this?

I co-wrote the music and lyrics for The Big Gay Jamboree with Marla Mindelle, one of my best friends from college for over 20 years! We also graduated from CCM with the book writer, Jonathan Parks-Ramage and the director, Connor Gallagher. We all got our degrees in Musical Theatre from Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.

D937: SO COOL! Where did this crazy idea come from??

The Big Gay Jamboree started as a screenplay for a movie musical about 10 years ago and Margot Robbie was attached. It was written by Mindelle and Parks-Ramage and after Marla’s success in the off-Broadway hit Titanique (where she wrote and stars in the show), got back in touch and they decided to give BGJ another go as a stage musical. They brought me into the mix to write the score about a year and a half ago and we hit the ground running. We got picked up by Wagner Johnson Productions (who just had huge success on Broadway with Stereophonic winning 5 Tonys this year including Best Play) who are co-producing BGJ with LuckyChap, Margot’s production company. This is LuckyChap’s first stage show after years of producing films like Saltburn, Barbie, and my personal favorite, I, Tonya.

D937: I, TONYA! WHAT A HOOT! What has this experience been like….any surprises?

Being granted the time to really workshop a show can be so key to its success. Many Broadway shows can take up to 10 years before it’s debut and we are very lucky to have been fast tracked in this way. But our producers know the importance of workshopping and making sure it’s the best it can be and we’ve learned so much from being in those rooms and experimenting.

D937: In Dayton, we know you from your work with TheatreLab. Has that experience helped??

I have worn a lot of hats with TLD and I’m so grateful to have gotten training in Arts Administration, theater tech, marketing and so much more. There is a need for a group like TLD in Dayton and I hope it’s able to continue to survive in such an arts rich city!

D937: Agreed! So, how do we get to see the BGJ?

Previews begin at the Orpheum Theater off-Broadway on September 14 (open to the public) with our official opening night on October 1. Right now we are scheduled to run through January 31. Ticket info can be found at biggayjamboreethemusical.com.

9 Places For Oysters in the Miami Valley

Oysters are highly nutritious shellfish that offer a wide array of health benefits. They’re packed with high quality protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants — all of which benefit health.

East Coast oysters are known for their briny, salty, and complex flavor, with hints of seaweed, minerals, and sometimes butter. West Coast oysters are known for their sweet and fruity flavor, with notes of melon, cucumber, and citrus.

East Coast oysters are long and smooth, with a narrow base and tear drop shape. West Coast oysters are round with rough, fluted edges.

The size of the oyster doesn’t much matter, it’s a personal preference whether you look them big or small, but it should look full within the shell. A quality oyster won’t be too thin or too salty.

While some people believe you should let it slide down your throat without biting it, chewing it one or two times will allow you to get all the flavor.

While it’s not necessary to use condiments, and some people actually prefer their fish plain, there are a variety of garnishes that can add an extra pop of flavor! Lemon, cocktail sauce, or a shallot mignonette are all common choices. These all add a little zing, without completely overpowering the taste of the oyster.

The annual United Irish of Dayton Celtic Festival – one of Dayton’s largest and most popular outdoor festivals – returns July 26-28. A downtown Dayton tradition since 2002, this free festival attracts more than 90,000 attendees to RiverScape MetroPark.

Saturate your senses in the sights, sounds and tastes of Celtic heritage, as you delight in the enchanting melodies of traditional Celtic music, witness captivating dance performances, and savor authentic culinary delights. The 2024 festival features six headliner bands and several regional performers on various stages of continuous entertainment, in addition to cultural exhibits and food and merchandise vendors.

The Dayton Celtic Festival also serves as the unofficial kick-off to the late summer/early fall festival season in Dayton – but more on that shortly! First, here’s a brief look at this year’s festivities.

The Experience

Rated one of the top festivals in Dayton, the Celtic Festival boasts three solid days of non-stop entertainment. In addition to three stages with continuous live entertainment, the festival experience includes a 5K/10K run/walk, Whiskey Tastings, Cultural Exhibits and Demonstrations, a Sunday Celtic Mass, a Celtic Marketplace featuring over 40 vendors with unique items from the Celtic nations, numerous food vendors offering tastes from around the world, and extensive selection of beers to enjoy.

Table 33 to Open In Former Est! Est! Est! Space at Arcade

In October of 2022 Table 33 announced they would be building out a new space on the first floor of the Arcade. But according to owner Charlie Carroll, those plans changed and yesterday he inked a deal with Cross Street Partners to take over the Est! Est! Est! space.

Space Table 33 is set to open at the Arcade in early fall 2024. With a dedication to local dishes and a community-centered environment, Table 33 aims to captivate diners with innovative dishes, a welcoming ambiance, and impeccable service. Dinner service will be from 4-9pm and the restaurant will be open 7 days a week.

The restaurant’s interior will undergo a transformation that will enhance the Table 33 brand and create a setting that invites guests to linger and savor each moment. Table service will be back and you can expect table cloths and linen napkins when they open. Table 33 plans to retain its current breakfast and lunch menu that showcases a blend of local flavors and inspirations with high-caliber options.

The Lights Will Go Off at Ghostlight Midtown

Ghostlight Coffee Midtown opened its second location in Dayton on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 800 S. Patterson Blvd, next door to Old Scratch Pizza. Today they announced via social media that Tues, July 23rd will be the last day for that location.

“It is with a very heavy heart, but one full of memories, that it is time for us to say goodbye to Ghostlight Midtown. Tuesday, July 23rd will be our last day of business at 800 South Patterson Blvd. Thank you Dayton for your support of this location over the past five (almost) years.

Local Coffee Shop Gets National Attention

ContempoRoast was chosen Distilled Brewed & Reviewed to represent Ohio in host John’s a one year project to feature a coffee roaster in a different US state each Sunday.

Here’s his feature on Centerville’s ContempoRoast owned by Mindy Hoffbauer and her son Andy in August of 2021.

The coffee shop feature a coffee lab where guests can order flights and attend tastings or classes. They also offer flavored lattes, affogatos with ice cream, espresso drinks, drips, pour overs, cold brews, teas, lemonades and more. They also feature treats from various local bakers like Seasoned with Love and Adelaide’s Wholesome Baked.

Area Foundation receives the single largest gift from Dayton Biz owner

The Breast Wishes Foundation, established in 2015, is thrilled to announce the first planned gift in the organization’s history. A generous $100,000 planned gift will significantly enhance our ability to grant more wishes to individuals battling breast cancer throughout the Dayton region.

The donor of this transformative gift is Breast Wishes Board Chair, Jan Hillman.
Jan has faced breast cancer three times, including her current diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. Reflecting on her gift, Jan shared, “It brings me joy to bring joy to others with breast cancer, who, like me, are fighting for their lives. The Breast Wishes Foundation’s mission to bring joy to those with breast cancer resonates with me strongly. I can think of no better way to invest funds that will bring hope at a time when it is needed the very most.”

Vice Chair and Co-Founder Elesha Snyder expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thanks to Jan’s leadership, we are one step closer to granting wishes to 500 breast cancer patients by the end of 2025. The Breast Wishes Foundation is blessed to have Jan’s guidance, support, and determination to bring JOY to hundreds of women with breast cancer fighting to survive.”

Taco Bell’s Cheesy Street Chalupa and Jalapeno Ranch Nacho Fries Hit The Menu

Hitting the Mexican fast food chain’s menu Thursday, July 18, is the Cheesy Street Chalupa, made with mozzarella and pepperjack cheese and topped with fresh onions and cilantro and creamy Jalapeño Ranch sauce. You can get two for $5.49 and choose to have them filled with slow-roasted Cantina chicken or grilled, marinated steak.

“The Chalupa has taken many delicious forms over the years, but with the Cheesy Street Chalupas, we set out to create a new flavor-rich way for fans to enjoy the beloved menu item,” said Luis Restrepo, Taco Bell’s vice president for product innovation, in a press release. “The fresh onions and cilantro atop layers of cheese and premium proteins seasoned to perfection adds a different flavor profile and is our playful nod to the street taco that we all know and love.”

The Chalupa was first introduced in 1999 and has since featured several iterations such as the XXL Chalupa, the Baja Chalupa, and the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Chalupa. The street-sized cheese-stuffed Chalupa shells were inspired by the Quesalupa shell, one of Chalupa’s spinoffs that was introduced in 2016 for a limited time.

Taco Bell is adding a twist to its fan favorite nacho fries, but it won’t stick around. The new jalapeno ranch Nacho Fries hit menus Thursday, July 18, at participating Taco Bell restaurants nationwide, according to the fast-food chain. For $4.49, customers can get a bed of seasoned fries “topped with a tangy and creamy jalapeño ranch sauce” and pico de gallo, a product description reads. Customers can add their choice of protein. Nacho fries reappeared on menus in April, a spicier iteration that featured a blend of ranch and Serrabanero hot sauce by Secret Aardvark, McClatchy News previously reported. “With the latest edition of Jalapeño Ranch Nacho Fries, this is the longest Nacho Fries run to date for Taco Bell, bringing fans more chances to grab their favorite fries with more flavor innovations to enjoy, while supplies last,” Taco Bell said in a news release.

Restaurants Taking a Summer Vacation

Summer break isn’t just for students. While the warmer days of summer mean “ramp-up time” for restaurants in many beach cities, industry folk here in Dayton are accustomed to the opposite. As students go on sabbatical, many restaurant owners have created a habit of following suit, closing up shop from days to weeks.

Whether giving their teams time to refresh or using the time to freshen up their space, we thought it would be nice to spread the word on those we’re aware of and invite you to use their summer break as an extra excuse to try somewhere new.

Ashley’s Pastry Shop | 21 Park Ave, Dayton

will take vacation on Saturday, July 20th reopening, Tuesday, July 30th

Baker Benji’s | 700 Troy Street, Dayton

will close Sunday, July 28th and reopen Tuesday, August 6th

Big Sky Bread Company | 3070 Far Hills Ave, Kettering

Closing for our Family Vacation July 13 Through July 24. Will reopen July 25th at 7am

Bill’s Donut Shop | 268 N Main St, Centerville

Bill’s will be closing for renovations on Sunday, July 7th no later than 9:00 PM (earlier if we run out of donuts), and
will re-open (carry-out only) at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, July 17th. We will be back in full operation by August 1st.

Grist | 46 W. 5th Street, Dayton, OH

will be closed July 15- Aug 1st while they take a culinary adventure to Italy for research
