Dayton On Tap
Beer! 2nd Annual Craft Beer Festival at Yellow Cab
The craft beer scene in Dayton is exploding with breweries opening and expanding throughout the Miami Valley. With 12 breweries in operation, a craft beer festival is bringing them all together under one roof to celebrate the growing local, craft beer culture. On Saturday, July 1th from 3-9pm the Yellow Cab building will host BEER!, where attendees will be able to sample a 6 ounce beer from each brewery. “We want to host an event that showcases the diversity of our local breweries. Additionally, the Yellow cab is a central location, so attendees may be able to try a new brewery that they haven’t traveled to yet,”said organizer Brian Johnson.

Attendees of Beer!, will be able to vote on the Dayton’s Best Brewery, People’s Choice Award. Each of the breweries will be submitting one beer, and attendees will vote for their favorite. Last year Fifth Street Brewpub took home the prize but, like the Stanley cup, this award travels from brewery to brewery every year.
There will also be other local beverage favorites such as Boston Stoker coffee and specialty sodas from Lily’s Bistro. “We want to have some cool drink options for people who would like to attend the event but maybe aren’t big beer drinkers, and we’ll also have“designated driver” tickets available for $5 that get you entry to the event and a complimentary cup of coffee or soda” said Johnson.
With any good beer event you have to have good food to match. “It’s really exciting, we have a brand new food truck that will be debuting at BEER! called Bad Dog. They serve over sized, locally made hot dogs with a variety of gourmet toppings to choose from.” Johnson said. Organizers also plan to have local favorites Harvest Mobile Cuisine and Smokin’ Bee Bee Q on site.
Tickets are $25 presale and $30 at the door. Attendees get a 6 ounce beer from all 12 of the local breweries, entry to the venue and live music, and a complimentary tasting glass that you can take with you. Tickets are available at your local participating brewery or on their website, beerdayton.com.
Participating Breweries: Yellow Springs Brewery, Warped Wing, Toxic Brew Co., Star City Brewing Co., The Dayton Beer Company, Eudora Brewing Co., Lock 27, Nowhere in Particular Brewing, Hairless Hare Brewery, Lucky Star Brewery, Carillon Brewing Co., Fifth St. Brew Pub
Ohio ABV Increase Bill Gaining Traction
Representative Dan Ramos, D-Lorain, continues to push legislation that would increase the maximum ABV for beer from 12% to 21% to modernize Ohio’s antiquated beer laws with H.B. 68. Neighboring states of Kentucky and Pennsylvania have no limits while Indiana limits beer to 21%.
This bill and other variations have been circling Columbus for years but it appears that the current group of legislators may finally be ready to act. A committee testimony hearing will be held on June 23rd and beer industry professionals are invited to attend to speak about their support for the bill.
All other supporters of the bill are encouraged to contact their local Representative to declare their support for a bill that will continue to drive Ohio’s thriving brewing industry.
Use the the link below to quickly find your Representative and send them an email.
Why It Matters
There are a few reasons why this increase makes sense for the State of Ohio.
First, from an economic perspective it keeps Ohio tax revenues in state. There will be less travel to neighboring states to pick up highly sought after beers that exceed 12% ABV. We also saw the Stone Brewing East-coast brewery slip away from Columbus. Although, BrewDog will help fill that void (just don’t try to brew any Tokyo).
Second, it allows Ohio’s very talented brewers to be more creative when developing their recipes without worrying about ABV. There are many great beers in the 13-18% ABV range produced outside our state. More extreme malt bills and spirit barrel treatments can have an effect on the final alcohol content but create memorable flavor profiles.
Third, the current laws are antiquated and nonsensical. Raising the ABV limit on more limited production and generally more expensive beers will not lead to an increase in alcohol abuse. Some delicious 17% bum wine can be easily scored at nearly any gas station or thirsty folks can grab their favorite 40 proof plastic bottle vodka at Kroger.

Jackie O’s Tap Takeover At The Barrel House
We are excited to host this Tap Takover with special guest Johnny from Jackie O’s. Come on out and enjoy four of their awesome beers on tap!
Mandala Citra … This double IPA is solely hopped with one hop allowing both the brewer and the consumer to fully taste and smell all the pure hop character
Morning Cloak … A true session hop delight with grainy character from munic and wheat to add lightness to the grist. Aroma is full of oranges, lemon rind, floral nuances, and touches of grapefruit pith
Razz Wheat … 40% white wheat and 60% malted two row create a nice subtle wheat ale. 420lbs of all natural raspberry puree is added during fermentation giving this beer a unique and playful personality. The rosy haze and sticky head embody a continuum of sour sweetness held together by a wheat back bone
Hop Ryot … Hop Ryot has a unique character thanks to the use of Rye malt and Simcoe hops: rye malt adds some soft spicy notes to the beer, and a generous amount of Simcoe hops adds a big sticky-citrus aroma and flavor. It finishes very dry and pleasant, beckoning another sip
Big Day for Owner of Dayton Beer Company
It’s a huge day for the owner of The Dayton Beer Company – not only is he getting married at his new brewery today, but his “Batch 100” golden strong ale was also chosen from over 350 beers to win the Alltech Commonwealth Cup. The competition is the only professional beer competition in Kentucky and boasted 350 beers from 20 countries and five continents competing for the title.
The top award was announced at the Alltech Craft Brews and Food Fest Saturday in Lexington, an event that in its second year, drew 51 national and local craft breweries to nearly 50,000 square feet in Heritage Hall, double the size of last year’s space.
180 brews were sampled by thirsty patrons, with special tappings every 15 minutes that kept the excitement level high. Kentucky craft distillers from across the state were pouring samples, for those looking for a bourbon, rye, brandy or even absinthe fix.
Food vendors dispensed samples and meals as many patrons stayed and socialized, and debated which brew or cider to sample next from breweries across the country as local bands played onstage.
Batch 100 from The Dayton Beer Company of Dayton, Ohio, is a Belgian-style ale filtered and tank conditioned and made with can
dy sugar. The judges noted its subtle malty sweetness, pleasant dry finish, high carbonation, and nice hop quality.
The small brewery is headed by Pete Hilgeman, the groom getting married today.
Brewery representative John Wiley (co-host of What’s Brewing Dayton) traveled from Dayton, Ohio to accept the award. The brewery won eight medals last year in the competition, and won another five this year. The brewery is “proud to be the first true microbrewery in the Dayton area in over 50 years and describes its beer as “hand-crafted with no automation in small batches.”
Other entrants received gold, silver and bronze medals for quality brews. Lexington’s Blue Stallion Brewing Co. won four silver medals and five bronzes. Country Boy Brewing Co. of Lexington was awarded one silver medal and two bronzes. The brewery winner last year, Zip’s Brewhouse of Hungary, also picked up several medals for its brews.
Winners were chosen by an expert panel of judges based on blind judging of appearance, aroma, flavor, body, style and quality.
Stop by Dayton Beer Hall and Production Brewery at 41 Madison Street in Downtown Dayton to congratulate the happy couple. The hours are:

Warped Wing Releases Summer Saison Thursday
A motivated group of engineers, the likes of Deeds, Patterson and Kettering to name a few gathered in a small barn out behind a house. These men, Dayton’s most formidable heavyweights of invention contemplated the future of industry. And discussed scientific and technological issues over long hours, cold nights and yes, Saison. The result? Some of the most important inventions known to mankind. These Dayton drivers of forethought were appropriately named the “Barn Gang”.
Warped Wing has brewed this beer to celebrate the efforts of these hard working gentlemen. This Farmhouse ale is hazy, opaque, golden straw in color. Its Dry hopped with Vic Secret hops, which provides a melon and white grape aroma and flavor with a mild citrus note. There’s an ever so slight bitterness with just enough bite to balance the beer. The malt character is light and crisp and the beer finishes very dry.
Stop by the Warped Wing Brewing Company at 26 Wyandot this Thursday at 5pm to be amongst the first to try this beer, perfect for summer swilling.
Columbus Brewery North High Debuts In Dayton With A Pub Crawl

North High Brewing co-owners Tim Ward on the left, Gavin Meyers on the right with Brewmaster Jason McKibben in the middle.
In 2011 to college friends, Gavin Meyers and Tim Ward, partnered to bring a new kind of brewery to Columbus: one that focuses on the EXPERIENCE of brewing. They opened North High Brewing as Columbus’ first and only Brew on Premises establishment, where the customer is the brewmaster. ( Dayton’s Eudora Brewing Co offers this). In addition to customers brewing their own beer, North High Brewing creates small-batch, high-quality craft beer that they serve in their taproom as well as on tap at dozens of area restaurants and bars.
The demand for their beer has been so high that they recently underwent a brewery expansion that has taken them from being one the smallest breweries in Columbus to being one of the largest. In order to help with the new production brewing facility, North High Brewing recently brought on Jason McKibben as Brewmaster and partner. Jason has been a professional brewer for 15 years, including as senior Brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch, and most recently as head of production at Anchor Brewing in San Francisco.

The building that now houses North High Brewing was originally a Ford dealership in 1917, and the founders set out to restore the building to its original historical glory. Visitors will find numerous salvaged and repurposed architectural elements from throughout Ohio and the nation, including windows and doors from historic OSU buildings, old post offices, and even an 1870’s distillery.
The beers of North High Brewing are finally coming to Dayton and this Thurs, April 30th you can join the North High on Fifth Pub Crawl that will welcome their brews to town. The crawl will kick off at 5:3ppm The Barrel House (where there’s plenty of parking behind the building) and then move on to Dublin Pub at 6:15, , then head to the Trolley Stop at 7pm, walk next door to Lucky’s at 7:45pm and and end up at Blind Bobs by 8:3ppm . The crawl locations are less than 1 mile from start to finish.

Opening weekend highlights will include live entertainment, multiple food trucks, giveaways and several other surprises to be revealed as the weekend unfolds. The Beer Hall will feature a heavy rotation of food trucks in their parking lot.

The 8,000 sq. foot space, located in the former Weiler Welding building at 41 Madison Street, features state-of-the-art equipment including a canning line and a 15 barrel steam brew house, which together offer an initial brewing capacity of 3,000 bbls annually, with opportunity to scale up to 6,500 bbls. Hilgeman says,“Not only are we able to increase our capacity but soon we will also be able to offer bottles and cans. These are projects that we have wanted to do, but just didn’t have the room in our original space.” In addition, the new brewery features 5,000 sq. feet of space for patrons, including areas available for private events. The 36 taps will feature Ohio craft beers.
Founded in 2010, the award- winning Dayton Beer Company believes in continuing the city’s rich history as a place where innovation is born with its unique but accessible brews. Small
batch, handcrafted beer embodies its vision of how beer should taste. The Dayton Beer Company will continue to operate its Kettering Tap Room at 912 E. Dayton Dragons, Milano’s and Craft Beers-Winning Team!
A brand new HD video board isn’t the only new addition fans will notice at Fifth Third Field when the season begins on Sunday, April 12th.
The Dayton Dragons today announced another major renovation with the creation of the Milano’s Tap Room at Fifth Third Field.
Located on the first base side of the stadium, the Milano’s Tap Room will feature 10 different craft beer selections on tap. Those selections will rotate throughout the season to feature a wide variety of different breweries and craft beers from around the world and even from right here in our own local community.
The Dragons teamed up with two local craft beer experts in Heidelberg Distributing and Milano’s Atlantic City Submarines to design the new concept.
“Aside from hot dogs, there aren’t many things as synonymous with enjoying a baseball game than an ice cold beer,” Dragons President Robert Murphy said. “We’re always looking for ways to add to the fan experience at a Dragons game. The Milano’s Tap Room is a great new space that will bring even more variety to an already great lineup of beer options.”
“My family has been the local beer distributor in Dayton since 1938, but even before that began my great grandfather was brewing his own craft beers,” Heidelberg CEO Vail Miller said. “That craft brewing process has always been a part of our history. It’s why we’re so passionate about beer. I can’t wait to share that passion with Dragons fans all summer long.”
Located at the end of the first base concourse, the space has been completely renovated into an open-air craft beer lover’s paradise. Two garage doors will be lifted on game days to bring the game atmosphere inside.
Fans inside the Tap Room will notice a distinctly local feel, as the design of the space was closely modeled after the popular Dayton-based Milano’s chain. Big screen TV’s, high-top tables, wall decor and a brand new bar are just some of the Milano’s-themed design elements that were included in the new space.
“We love craft beer,” Milano’s owner John Slaughenhaupt said, “so we were thrilled at the opportunity to bring the Milano’s craft beer experience from our restaurants to Fifth Third Field all summer long.”
Currently under construction, the Milano’s Tap Room will debut at the Dragons Opening Day game on April 12th.
The Reds Already Lead The League In This Stat!
It’s important for a team to strive to be the best. The Cincinnati Reds are the best in all of American sports at having the most self-serve beer taps available. Great American Ball Park has added 20 self-serve beer stations just in time for Opening Day (April 6)! Atlanta’s DraftServ Technologies confirms this is the largest install in any one stadium, according to national sales manager Tobi Pequignot.
Beer lovers will be able to pour their own Bud Light, Budweiser or Goose Island draft and pay by the ounce using a Beer card, that can be bought in the ballpark’s stores in denominations of $20 and $100.
You’ll pay about 39 cents an ounce for Bud products, while the Goose Island varietals will run about 54 cents per ounce. They say it takes about 20 seconds to fill your beer.
You’ll find these four taps draft machines at 10 locations around the stadium — six on the Terrace level (from foul pole to foul pole), three on the View level (at home plate between first and third base) and one in Champions Club.
Warped Wing To Release SelfStarter in Cans
Warped Wing Brewing Company (WWBC) is excited to announce the release of its first seasonal IPA in cans. Self Starter Session IPA (5.2% ABV) will be released Monday, March 30th in Dayton and Cincinnati. This marks the 4th can released since the brewery’s opening in 2014.
Once, there lived an engineer. Innovator. And indefatigable holder of 186 patents. Who, in 1911, filed U.S. Patent No. 1,150,523. An electric starting device for automobiles. To not a single person’s disparagement, it ended the era of the hand-crank. Fitting, then, that you’ll be holding this. Named as much for the inventor. As for what he invented.
Self Starter. This session India Pale Ale is pale orange in color with copper highlights. Its citrus/fruity aroma and flavors comes from the Amarillo hops that were added during the boil and the dry hopping at the end of fermentation. The malt character is slightly bready or nutty to start. This beer finishes with a patently dry close. Carry on.
Self Starter will be available in the market from April thru August in both draught and cans. The beer will be tapped at the brewery this Thursday and draught and cans will be released to taverns, restaurants, and select retail accounts the following Monday.
Oberon Ale- A Sign of Spring!
The green beer is gone (for serious beer fans it never crossed our minds) and March 23 marks the annual seasonal release of Oberon Ale, a wheat ale that has become synonymous with warmer temperatures, the start of spring and the beginning of the Major League Baseball season. Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan brewery starts spring with the annual release of kegs of Oberon Ale.
“Consumers see Oberon as an annual sign of spring,” says Rick Lack, executive vice president of Rave Associates, which distributes Bell’s products across southeastern Michigan. “While it is a summer beer by premise, its release date is the single biggest sales push we see for any one item in our industry.”
Lack said the release “is truly a phenomena” based on how excited people are to see it back, year after year.
Lack says Oberon is versatile and appeals to every kind of bar and restaurant in the state. He also considers it a crossover beer that appeals to people who don’t consider themselves craft beer drinkers.
In Dayton, you can stop by Chappy’s Tap Room and Grill at 5pm today for your official taste of spring! For the first 48 guests who by a 23ox Oberon, you can even keep the official souvenir glass!
