Pettibone Coffee One Year Anniversary Celebration

February 27, 2022 By Dayton937

Pettibone Coffee began as a coffee roastery business in 2017, run by mother and son duo Jonathan and Marci Purcey. They announced the opening of the cafe in 2020, but covid delays forced the opening to Feb 27th of 2021.

“Pettibone Coffee was born out of a deep passion for coffee, all of its processes, and the sometimes evasive quiet moments in life,” the Purcey’s said via the Pettibone Coffee webpage. “As coffee lovers ourselves it’s our commitment to you to make sure we never fail to deliver perfect coffee that has all of the love we have to offer in each and every bean.”

They offer breakfast sandwiches on ciabatta or croissants and avocado toast, and for lunch you can choose from a turkey club, hot honey grilled cheese, or a chicken pesto sandwich.  They even have gluten free bread options. Not a coffee fan?  Check the cooler for Peach Blossom, Ginger or Pomegranate Kombucha, Coconut Water or other chilled drinks.  Their bakery counter is always stocked with chocolate chip cookies and blueberry muffins.

To show their gratitude to all who helped pull the project together, their awesome staff who makes this place run on the daily, our vendors who help supply us with amazing ingredients, and of course our community who supports us every day and makes this all possible. we will be offering cafe discounts all day tomorrow (02/28) while supplies last!
These discounts include:
10% Off Pettibone Branded Merchandise
35% Off Bar Drinks
50% Off 12oz Bags Of Coffee
And they’ll be giving out a free cookie with every drink purchased!
These discounts are good for all day Monday (2/28) while supplies last.
“It may same a bit strange that we’re offering these discounts the day AFTER our one year anniversary.. but to be honestwe were scared of how busy they might make our already very busy weekend if we were to do it today,” they said in a facebook post.

Evans Bakery Taking Orders for Paczki Day

February 23, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Every year just before Mardi Gras — also known as Fat Tuesday, the day of feasting before the Christian fast known as Lent — people  begin clamoring for jelly doughnuts. The tradition is Polish, but it’s honored in many different communities. In some neighborhoods the Thursday before Mardi Gras is Paczki Day, in others it’s Fat Tuesday, but Poland’s famous doughnuts can be enjoyed year-round.

The folks at Evans Bakery have been making paczki for years and say they sell out paczki quickly on Paczki Day and they taking pre-order for paczki  and the cut off time to preorder is 3:00 this Saturday. The flavors they are offering are: apple, apricot, blueberry, cherry, strawberry, lemon, raspberry, custard, or cream. You can have them glazed, sugared, or powdered.

How do you pronounce this pastry?  We went to Youtube for the answer:

Bessies Homemade Noodles Opens Deli in Fairborn

February 21, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Bessies Homemade Noodles have been a staple at area festivals for years. Do you recognize this booth set up from OktoberFest, Celtic Fest, or the Beavercreek Popcorn Festival?

Or maybe you’ve picked them up in the frozen cases at Kroger or Dorothy Lane Market or your local grocery store.  Bessie was owner Monica Easterling’s great-grandmother. She passed away more than a 35 years ago, but she remembers learning to make the egg noodles by her side using the simple recipe of flour, water, eggs and “foo-foo dust,” as Monica calls the secret seasoning that makes Bessie’s so popular.

But now they are launching something completely new- a deli! Now in the soft opening stage, you can pop into their store on Broad Street in Fairborn from 9am – 3pm this week. Then they will evaluate their process and set up, tweak anything that needs improving and announce their grand opening. Owner Monica Easterling and her husband bought the building two years ago to use for manufacturing, but the front had previously been set up as a butcher shop and kept thinking about opening the shop, but Covid slowed the process.

The deli will feature Amish Farms Chicken, Walnut Creek Amish meats like pork chops strip steaks and crab cakes.  Bowman and Landes turkey products, Bake House breads, and house made dips, and salads and Boston Stoker Coffee beans.

For those with a sweet tooth, you’ll be able to get Killer Brownies and Hershey’s hand dipped ice cream. Fresh local honey, Mrs. Miller’s Homemade Jams and so many other goodies.

This truly is a family business with owners Matt and Monica are hands on and their daughter actually work in the business with Monica’s mom handles much of the labeling.

New Spot for Wine & Oysters

February 18, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

The Silver Slipper describe themselves as “a  natural-focused wine bar with small plates, booze, and Miller Lite, always.”   It’s been a long time coming for this Wayne Ave spot.   Lorelei Fink and Simon Gifford took over the building in 2019 doing  extensive renovations.  They held a few private dinners and pop-up oysterfests in the parking lot and then COVID.  But they are finally ready to open the doors and welcome that masses!

They’ll be open Thursday- Sunday from 5pm – 1am serving up fine wines, oysters and house marinated olives, with plans to add charcuterie, salads and even some fish dishes to the menu.  According to the website wines are $7/glass and they have mocktails and Miller Lite.  We’re not sure what the affection for Miller Lite is, but it seems to recur frequently in their promotional posts on social media.

Should have taken the picture before the oysters were eaten.

No reservations are taken and nor is their a dress code, they stress they are a really casual bar. So plan on bellying up to the bar, enjoy some wine or bubbly with your oysters and tell them DaytonDining sent you!

The 20 Best Restaurants in All of Ohio – Amber Rose #3

February 16, 2022 By Dayton937

Money Inc recently released a list of  The 20 Best Restaurants in All of Ohio.  As author Liz Flynn explained, “over the last decade or so, Ohio’s food scene has exploded, with an ever-increasing number of restaurants hitting the streets of both its biggest cities and sleepiest suburbs. Regardless of whether you prefer fine dining experiences, all-you-can-eat BBQ joints, or chic little bistros, you’ll have no problem finding something to suit. If you’re ready to tap into the region’s bountiful offerings and enjoy some scrumptious food, these are the 20 best restaurants in Ohio to check out.”

The top ranking area restaurant she named was Amber Rose, coming in at #3.  Here’s what she had to say about it:

Amber Rose

3. Amber Rose Restaurant, Dayton

Named one of the best restaurants in Dayton by vacationidea.com, Amber Rose Restaurant is the place to go for some made from scratch European cuisine. Expect a culinary tour of the continent with dishes like Lithuanian Cabbage Rolls, Beef Stroganoff, Warsaw Medley, Hungarian Chicken Paprika, and Hunter Schnitzel. With its cozy ambiance, elegant decor and exquisite collection of global wines, craft beers, and handcrafted cocktails, it’s a lovely place to while away a few hours over a leisurely lunch or dinner.

Also making the list at #6. The Golden Lamb, Lebanon:

The Golden Lamb

If you haven’t got a reason to visit Lebanon, make one up. Once you arrive, head straight for The Golden Lamb. Set in the town’s oldest continuously operated hotel (a place where everyone from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Charles Dickens and Mark Twain to Neil Armstrong has bedded down for the night), the only thing the restaurant has in greater abundance than history is exceptional food. Key dishes not to miss include a slow-roasted beef tenderloin sliced and served with crushed red potatoes with leeks, bacon & aged cheddar, a classic parmesan tomato garnish and cabernet jus and, for something extra comforting on a cold day, the Ohio Fried Chicken Dinner served with skillet gravy, mashed potatoes, and fresh seasonal vegetables.

Making the list at #10:

Spot

10. The Spot To Eat, Sidney

Whoever chose the name for this Sidney hotspot couldn’t have picked a more appropriate name if they’d tried. The Spot To Eat started out as a check wagon over 100 years back, but has since evolved into the kind of classic, 50’s style diner where you wouldn’t be surprised to find the Foz chugging down a milkshake at the bar. It’s not fancy, but it is fun, sporting a tempting range of homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and an old-fashioned creme pie you’d happily bathe in.
