Food Truck Spotlight: Hunger Paynes

March 26, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Andrew Payne got started cooking at 15 years old at the Officer’s Club at WPAFB.  After that he moved on to cooking at Quaker Steak and Lube and Cracker Barrel.  He went to Culinary School at Hocking College and worked as a kitchen manager at a fine dining restaurant until he graduated top of his class.  He came back to Dayton in 2008, worked at NCR Country Club and numerous hotels until he landed the Sous Chef position at the Dayton Convention Center.  Within a few years he moved up to Executive Chef at both the Nutter Center and the Convention Center.

When asked about what inspired him to start a food tuck he told us, “I wanted the freedom to cook the dishes I wanted to cook and personally see the gratification from my customers instead of sitting back in the kitchen somewhere.  I wanted to create a truck where I could offer many different types of cuisine in a way that most people aren’t used to seeing while keeping a central theme, serving Croquettes checked all the boxes,” and thus in June of 2013 be launched  Hunger Paynes.

Andres tell us that his best seller is the Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese with  Garlic Sour Cream sauce and Green Onions (most people add his Aged Cheddar Cheese sauce and Bacon too).
The second best seller is probably his Reuben Croquette. They also offer cajun salmon, chipotle arancini and buffalo chicken croquettes, as well as an apple chicken wrap, buffalo chicken blt wrap, pretzel bites and beef sliders. You can also pick up some homemade chips and pork rinds, or spurge a little on the black truffle french fries.
Andrew is especially proud to share that he make everything from scratch.  “All of our sauces are one of kind, we make our Pretzel Bites from scratch using an early 18th Century recipe, we cut and fry our signature Potato Chips, and we utilize all raw ingredients in our Croquettes.  We are also certified by the United States Department of Agriculture and we strive to serve one of kind dishes with great customer service.”  As a classically trained Chef, he’s also a great caterer for your next special event. They offer catering for small parties, corporate events, and weddings up to 250 people. You can find a full catering menu available on their website.

Where to find Hunger Paynes:

March 26 – Carriage Trails (neighborhood), 5pm-7pm 9403 Lakeside St, Tipp City, OH 45371

DAI Announces New At-Home Tasting Event!

March 23, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) has announced a new at-home tasting event, Pop, Fizz, Clink!, taking place on May 1.

Featuring sparkling wines, beers, hard seltzers and special surprises in a commemorative Party Pack, this online fundraiser takes the place of the popular Bourbon & Bubbles tasting event, which will not be held in 2021 due to the pandemic.

“While we are eager to welcome everyone back to in-person events at the museum, we felt it would be best to take a safe and cautious approach this spring,” said Dayton Art Institute Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Building on the success of last year’s Virtual Oktoberfest fundraiser, our team has created what promises to be a unique and fun at-home event. You won’t want to miss this chance to sample some unique beverages and join us for an exclusive online party.”

Pop, Fizz, Clink! Party Packs are on sale now  at www.daytonartinstitute.org/popfizzclink.

They include three bottles of wine, two beer selections and two specialty hard seltzers, plus special treats and access to an exclusive online party taking place on May 1. Upgraded VIP Party Packs are also available and include additional treats and gourmet goodies!

Party Packs are priced at $90 for museum members and $100 for non-members. Each Party Pack includes: Campo Viejo cava, Yulupa sparkling and Chole prosecco; New Belgium Dominga Mimosa Sour and Deschutes Obsidian Stout; Press Seltzer and Vizzy Lemonade; one bag of turtle pecan sea salt gourmet popcorn from the American Classic Snack Company; and access to the online party on May 1.

Upgraded VIP Party Packs are priced at $140 for museum members and $150 for non-members. In addition to the items included in the Party Pack, the VIP upgrade includes: a six-piece chocolate box from Winan’s Chocolates + Coffee; an additional bag of bourbon beer cheese gourmet popcorn from the American Classic Snack Company; and two cupcakes in a jar from Twist Cupcakery, which was recently named best cupcakes in the state by MSN and East This Not That.

“The exclusive online party will include music, beer and wine tasting presentations, and many other surprises,” Roediger said. “And of course, it only makes sense to include a ‘virtual tour’ of POP Art in the museum’s collection, presented by our own Chief Curator and Director of Education, Dr. Jerry Smith. The tour will serve as a great tie-in to our upcoming Special Exhibition, Changing Times: Art of the 1960s, which opens later in May.”

Party Packs are only available for a very limited time and must be purchased in advance via the DAI website. Sales end April 14, with pickup taking place Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a pickup-only event; Party Packs cannot be shipped. The DAI will announce additional details about Party Pack pickup later in April. The online party begins at 7 p.m. on May 1.

Pop, Fizz, Clink! is made possible with sponsorship support from Bonbright Distributors, Dayton International Airport, Enterprise Roofing & Sheet Metal, Heidelberg Distributing and White Allen European Auto Group, with special thanks to American Classic Snack Company, Twist Cupcakery and Winan’s Chocolates + Coffees.

All proceeds from this new fundraiser help benefit operations at the Dayton Art Institute.

“I hope everyone will take the opportunity to sip and savor, while helping support the museum as we begin the difficult process of recovering from financial impact of the pandemic,” Roediger added. “If you’re not a drinker, you can also go to the Pop, Fizz, Clink! page on our website, make an online donation to the event, and you will get access to the May 1st online party!”

Party Pack purchasers must be at least 21 years old and residents of the state of Ohio. Participants who place orders are asserting that they are 21 years old or more and are Ohio residents.  Participants must produce a valid photo identification, including proof of Ohio residency and age, when picking up packages. No exceptions will be made.

The Dayton Art Institute collection galleries are open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For more information about planning a visit, go to www.daytonartinstitute.org or call 937-223-4ART (4278).

Foodtruck Spotlight: Underdogs Mobile

March 18, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

We asked Scott from Underdogs Mobile how he got started in the food truck business.  He shared with us he was was “very unhappy working in the corporate world and my wife actually came up with the idea. We felt there was room in the Dayton market to succeed if we could find our niche.”  He’d worked at a few restaurants while growing up in the Chicago area and he says with ” Dumb luck, some planning and a lot of hard work” they launched Underdogs Mobile.
Being from the Chicagoland area, he was inspired by traditional street vendors. “People ask if our Chicago Dog is legit and I just laugh and give a look. It’s the real deal- a dog- an all beef dog, dill pickle spear, tomato, relish, onion, mustard, poppy seeds, celery salt and sport pepper.”
This hot dog is one of their best sellers, along with the Home Run dog (topped with mac & cheese and crumbled bacon) and they rock A LOT of their now famous tots.
Our season will kick off Mid-March and run into the Fall. Since we’re on wheels we keep the truck moving so following us is best. We are always looking to add new events, companies and locations to serve at. No fans only friends!
Find Underdogs at:

Wed, 3/24 11am-1:30pm – Bell Elementary Bellbrook, 4122 N Linda Dr
Fri, 3/26 11am-2pm – Kettering at Governor’s Place, 3120 Governor’s Pl Blvd

For booking inquiries contact [email protected]
Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter is @UnderdogsMobile we also use the StreetFoodFinder app.

Twist Cupcakery Named Best in State!

March 16, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton’s own Twist Cupcakery was just recognized for having the best cupcake in the state by MSN and Eat This Not That in their Best Cupcake in Every State article!

According to their write up:

“You would be hard-pressed to find anything less than a five-star review on Twist Cupcakery’s Yelp page, and for good reason. Located in downtown Dayton, this unassuming joint churns out unique flavors like peanut butter Oreo and the popular apple pie cupcake.”

Owner Kate River opened downtown’s only bakery in 2015, after a 3 year run operating as a home based bakery. A successful kickstarter campaign and the doors were open.  The bakery has earned a reputation for amazing sweet treats and during the pandemic their line of cupcakes in a jar became a big hit, allowing folks to send “Happiness in a jar, wherever you are.” Each jar includes 2 full size cupcakes and all the toppings packaged in a re-usable half pint glass jar. Treats will be mailed via USPS Priority service or UPS for $9/jar. Kate says the cupcakes are best eaten within  two days of arrival, but will last up to a week in the refrigerator or frozen for several months.

Don’t let the name fool you, Twist also makes cakes, brownies, chocolate covered strawberries and even wedding cakes. Place an order for cupcakes, cakes and other treats via phone, online, email, or stop by their shop.

Samuel Adams Pour Out Your Pride Design Contest

March 16, 2021 By Guest Contributor

For the inaugural Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Queer Beer Festival, we’re seeking a talented individual to design some art. We want you to decide what it looks like to be a powerful queer person participating in the craft beer industry or culture. Is it a special beer brewed for Pride? Is it people coming together to brew a beer? Or, is it just a colorful expression of drinking? It can be a design, illustration, or even an inspiring poem. For the Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Pour Out Your Pride Design Contest show us your best stuff to help us celebrate a resounding, yet often unrepresented community in craft beer*.

From the submissions, the Hop Culture and Samuel Adams teams will choose five semi-finalist winners to have their design featured on 100 limited-edition prints. And, one grand prize winner will additionally have their design featured on 300 limited-edition, exclusive YETI Colsters generously donated by YETI. Known for their coolers built for the wild, YETI is also active in supporting a more inclusive and equitable industry. Both the posters and Colsters will be sold to the public with all proceeds donated to GLAAD, an organization rewriting the script for LGBTQ acceptance and tackling tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue.

The Story Behind Hop Culture’s Queer Beer Festival

pour out your pride design contest

The Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Queer Beer Festival is an evolution of Hop Culture’s women in craft beer festival: Beers With(out) Beards. In 2018, Hop Culture’s Head of Partnerships Grace Weitz launched the festival as a part of her graduate school thesis capstone project at NYU. Over the last three years, this revolutionary festival has attracted over 3,000 attendees and 50 women-led breweries. In the same period, the event has featured 30 events aimed at celebrating the achievements of women across all aspects of the alcoholic beverage industries.

Building on the success of BW(O)B, Weitz — who identifies as queer — conceptualized Queer Beer as a way to celebrate the unique, vibrant, diverse, thriving, and often underserved queer community in beer. Additionally, Weitz wanted to showcase LGBTQ+ drinkmakers and tastemakers, express stories of empowerment from top queer-owned breweries or breweries actively supporting the queer community, and build a stronger culture of inclusivity in the beer industry.

Samuel Adams and Hop Culture Collaborate on the Pour Out Your Pride Design Contest

Samuel Adams is not only one of the world’s leading independent craft breweries, but also a long-time and passionate supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. Because of this, they made the perfect partner for Hop Culture’s new event. An inclusive network of Samuel Adams and Boston Beer Company coworkers, aptly named Labels Out, recognized the importance of the festival as part of their ongoing mission to support and encourage their peers as members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2020, Samuel Adams announced its partnership with GLAAD, including a $100,000 donation to the organization committed to rewriting the script for LGBTQ+ acceptance in addition to a commitment to education and training for coworkers. The brewery launched Love Conquers All, a Pride platform created in partnership with GLAAD, inspired by Love Conquers Ale, a Blackberry Basil Lime Gose limited release brewed by and for the LGBTQ+ community. To introduce Love Conquers All, Samuel Adams created a powerful video series called Poetry of Pride, to illustrate the power of poetry as a medium and expression designed to unite communities and amplify voices. Filmed inside the historic Stonewall inn, the series featured original poetry written by Teddy Geiger and Richard Blanco, recited by notable Broadway members of the LGBTQ+ community.

All in all, Samuel Adams has made huge strides to support the queer community, and Hop Culture is honored to partner with this revolutionary brewery as the presenting sponsor for its Queer Beer Festival.

So, what does the Hop Culture x Samuel Adams Pour Out Your Pride contest look like? Here’s what you need to know.

What is Hop Culture x Samuel Adams’ Pour Out Your Pride Contest?

The Hop Culture x Samuel Adams’ Pour Out Your Pride Contest is a competition asking people to submit a design, illustration, drawing, or poem that represents what it means to them to be a powerful queer person in craft beer.

Who Can Enter?

This Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States or DC, age 18 or older.

Although Hop Culture is more than happy to take submissions from anyone, we respectfully ask for understanding around the idea that only those who identify as queer will be eligible to win. LGBTQ+ allies and friends are an incredibly important part of our community, but our goals for this contest are to amplify queer voices and provide a platform for a marginalized community.

How Do I Enter?

To submit your design, simply post it on Instagram with the hashtag #pouroutyourpride and #contest. Then follow @samueladamsbeer and @hopculturemag to see the winners. The five-semi finalists will be announced on April 5th, 2020. The final winner will be announced on April 19th, 2021, at which point we’ll be in contact for the art files. And that’s it!

How Long Will the Pout Out Your Pride Contest Run?

March 15th to March 31st at 11:59 PM EST – First round entries will be accepted. From there, a representative panel from Hop Culture and Samuel Adams will choose five semi-finalists.

April 5th – The five semi-finalists will be announced via Hop Culture’s Instagram page (@hopculturemag). Each of the five semi-finalists will be contacted through Instagram and sent an additional questionnaire and art release.

April 14th – Semi-finalist questionnaire due.

April 19th – Hop Culture and Samuel Adams will announce the final winner.

May TBD – The posters with the winning designs from all semi-finalists will go on sale with all proceeds donated to GLAAD!

May TBD – The YETI Colsters with the final winning design will go on sale with all proceeds donated to GLAAD!

What Do I Win?

Five semi-finalists will have their submissions displayed on Hop Culture’s Instagram (@hopculturemag) and printed on 100 limited-edition 18×24 posters that will be sold online. All proceeds from the sales of these posters will be donated to GLAAD, an organization rewriting the script for LGBTQ acceptance and tackling tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue.

And, one lucky finalist will additionally have their winning design showcased on 300 exclusive limited-edition YETI Colsters (generously donated by YETI) that will be sold to the public prior to the festival. All of the proceeds from the Colsters will also be donated to GLAAD. Additionally, the final winner will be featured on Hop Culture’s Instagram (@hopculturemag) and profiled in an exclusive editorial piece on HopCulture.com.

Are There Any Rules on My Pour Out Your Pride Submission?

In order to meet the specifications of the YETI Colster, please note that the final winning design will be printed in a single color. We still encourage you to submit a full-color design because all five semi-finalist designs will be printed in color. However, please know that while we can represent the integrity of your design in full color on social media and on the semi-finalist winning posters, we will only be able to print on the Colster in a single color.

Who Chooses the Pour Out Your Pride Semi-Finalists and the Final Winner?

Winners will be chosen by a representative panel from Hop Culture and Samuel Adams.

Foodtruck Spotlight: Kona Ice

March 12, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Molly and Brad Eaton began Kona Ice of Dayton in 2016. We loved the product and the colorful trucks! We love being involved in the community and schools. Kona Ice has allowed us the opportunity to be at as many fun events as we can! This photo was taken when they brought our first Kona Ice truck home in 2015. Their daughters were only 18 months and 4 years old, and Molly says, “like most great adventures in life, we didn’t really know what we were doing, but just started figuring it out as we went along.”

When asked what people should know about Kona, Molly says “We’re mobile. We’re fun. We’re stocked with the most delicious flavors you’ve ever tasted.” Their most popular seller is Blackberry Mojito in a Kona Ice color changing cup!

Need a moment of pure bliss? Kona Ice has you covered. Molly invites you to “come visit us, let our sweet tunes sweep you away to an island in the middle of the ocean. And while you’re there, kick up your feet and enjoy a nice cup of our premium shaved ice.”

A HUGE part of what they’re doing at the moment is making sure that their trucks and updated serving procedures are 100% clean and safe before they head out to events.

Nationally, Kona Ice has even partnered with a company called MicroShield360. They’ve applied their product to every surface in their trucks. It lays down a barrier that kills germs, viruses and more, instantly on contact for an entire year! As they say, we want our customers’ experience to be completely clean and safe.

Look fo a Kona trucks at parties and festivals near you in  2021! To book them for an upcoming event reach out to Molly at [email protected].

Great Miami Riverway’s PIZZA TRAIL

March 10, 2021 By GreatMiamiRiverway

Announcing the Great Miami Riverway’s PIZZA TRAIL of pizza shops. Locally-owned pizza shops are a source of pride for communities, and serve as part of the fabric of each Riverway community.

Did you know that the largest pizza ever baked weighed 26,883 pounds? For some perspective – that is 44 times heavier than the Wright brother’s Wright Flyer aircraft!

That particular pizza measured 122 feet, 8 inches in diameter, weighed 26,883 pounds, and contained 9,920 pounds of flour, 3,960 pounds of cheese, 1 763 pounds of mushrooms, 1,984 pounds of tomato puree, and 1,984 pounds of chopped tomatoes.

If you’re looking for a pizza that can actually fit in your car – or plane – for takeout, the Great Miami Riverway has every kind pf pie imaginable.

Locally-owned pizza shops are a source of pride for communities, and serve as part of the fabric of each Riverway community. And they all have a story behind them, a story of a small business owner who’s worked long hours to build a loyal customer base that lasts years and years.

A favorite in Hamilton, Richard’s Pizza was first opened by Richard Underwood in 1955. Richard’s daughters continue to run the business in five locations around Hamilton. He said in a 2019 Hamilton Journal News article “…we only buy the best products available.  That typically means tomatoes, pepperoni and cheese from local, family-owned businesses. We don’t believe in short cuts or adding sugar to our sauce,” Richard said. “You can make a cheap pizza that way, but that doesn’t work for us. It’s all about quality.”

The pizza shops of the Riverway offer hometown favorites, gourmet flavors, gluten-free, vegan, and GIGANTIC. Your favorite shop is probably on this list, but use the Pizza Trail list to pick a new place to visit, or hop the whole trail and try them all!

Your favorite is probably on this list, but pick a new one to try – or travel the whole trail and try them all!

March 7, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Lily’s in the Oregon District will be offering discounted oyster happy hour from Tuesday through Sunday from 5-7pm until March 21st for dine in only. According to owner Emily Mendenhall, “we had so much fun at this year’s 2-week oyster fest and we’ve been brainstorming what we’d like to do for a revamped happy hour.  We’ll run this for 2 weeks and then evaluate it to see if it’s well received enough to make it a permanent thing.”

They’ll be serving up  oysters on the half shell, oyster shooters, fried oysters, oyster po boys, and Vietnamese baked oysters- “which are a Cochon (a NOLA restaurant owner Emily once worked at) inspired baked oyster in a garlic, lemony compound butter with red pepper flakes,” according to Chef Don Warfe,  who also shared that it was one of the big hits during their Oyster Fest.   There will also be specials on glasses of wine, beer, and cocktails!!

Oyster lovers are encouraged to arrive early, as they will start each day with a limited quantity to ensure freshness, and when they are gone they are gone.  Warfe shares they will have both east coast oysters, which are generally saltier, a bit bigger, chewier, and have a longer, paisley shape. as well as  west coast oysters that seem to have a  signature cucumber or melon note, they’re mild in salt and tend to be smaller overall.
