Twin Peaks Sports Lodge Opens in Beavercreek

June 26, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

JEB Food Group LLC has done an incredible job changing the look of what was previously the Fox & Hound into a place that feels like a mountain lodge, complete with animal heads on the walls, antler chandeliers and 70 tv’s that will make it a mecca for sports fans. Located adjacent to the Fairfield Commons Mall, Twin Peaks will feature scratch-made food, 32 29-degree beers on tap – including national and local favorites and plenty of eye candy. With a large menu including  smashed and seared burgers in-house smoked brisket, pork and wings, soups, salads, tacos, manager Amanda told us one of their most popular dishes is their pot roast.

Last night I got to enjoy a sneak peak meal at the lodge.  We were immediately greeted by a bevy of  Twin Peaks Girl in barely there red plaid tops and short shorts and taken to a tall table and offered selections from a limited menu.

We selected a couple of  cocktails from their featured $5 list. The Don Julio Blackberry Rita was refreshing and slightly sweet.  I appreciated the one large round ice cube that kept the drink cold, but didn’t water it down. My dining campaigns enjoyed the tartness of the Wheatley Strawberry Lemonade made with Wheatley Vodka, Monin Strawberry puree, lemonade house sour, lemon juice and Sprite.

Other $5 options included a mojito, a Tito’s bloody mary and the Irish Trashcan, made from house vodka, rum, melon liqueur and a can of Red Bull.

During the preview we were able to select an appetizer for the table and  choose loaded fries with hickory smoked pulled pork. They  came loaded with  cheddar · pepper jack · bacon bits · green onions · pico de gallo · cilantro · diced pickles · smoky sweet BBQ drizzle · bacon ranch and appreciated they cam with tongs to make them easy to share.

For entree’s we shared tastes of  three different entrees:

SPICY MEATBALL PARMESAN

all-beef house made meatballs · marinara made in-house with San Marzano tomatoes · fresh mozzarella · Parmesan · parsley · toasted hoagie roll

PULLED PORK

smoked pulled pork · creamy coleslaw · pickles · BBQ sauce which came with a choice of regular fries or the sweet potatoe fries we choose.

SPICY CHIPOTLE CHICKEN

blackened · southwest pico · house made garlic mashed potatoes · sautéed broccoli

This is the 3rd Ohio location for Twin Peaks, the Texas based chain that was founded in 2005. “We’re excited to bring the ultimate sports lodge to Beavercreek,” said Twin Peaks CEO Joe Hummel. “With wall-to-wall TVs, fans won’t miss a second of their Bengals, Reds, Bearcats or Flyers, as well as every marquee game, event and fight. Plus, our scratch-made food and elevated bar selection offers something for every appetite. We can’t wait to open the lodge and join the Beavercreek community.”

On Monday, June 27th and Tuesday, June 28th they’ll have a soft opening starting at 5pm and come Wednesday, June 29th they’ll begin their regular hours beginning with lunch service at 11am. Weeknights they will be open until midnight and Friday & Saturday will serve  until 2am. It’s a huge building and including the patio can seat 314 guests. They don’t take reservations, but based on the number of people that tried to come in during the invite only session last night, I expect they will be quite busy right away. They also offer a 20% discount for military and first responders.

Miamisburg Shop Serves Up Coffee & Comic Books

June 24, 2022 By Dayton937

Owners Adam and Erin Remillard have created a space that celebrates the nostalgia and excitement inherent in the pop culture world of comic books.  Their store, located in historic Miamisburg across from The Plaza Theatre, offers a huge selection of new release, back issue, and collector comics, in addition to trades, graphic novels, and manga for customers of all interests.

They bought the building of Feb 2020 and hoped to open soon after, but in March the pandemic hit and supply chain issues created huge delays. It took them over two years, but they finally opened Monocle Comics & Coffeein March of this year.

Adam, who grew up in Miamisburg, shared “We wanted to have a place where people wanted to come in and actually stay in the shop. So, for us, we’re big coffee drinkers. We’ve always loved coffee. So it kind of made sense to incorporate the coffee world, have a cafe feel to it, but also have the comics piece where people want to come and get their comics, maybe stay in the shop, get a coffee, read their comics. And we really wanted to be that community.”

Erin definitely has her focus on the coffee side of the house. They serve up a variety of fair trade organic coffee, espresso and frappes and sweet treats.  A large lounge area toward the back of the store provides comfortable seating for customers to enjoy constant showings of the best in superhero, sci-fi, fantasy, and pop-culture related movies, TV shows, and documentaries.

The Wellington Grill’s Last Day Tuesday, June 21st

June 16, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s official, Tuesday, June 21st will be the last day of operations for The Wellington Grille. Owner Mary Seto Miller says she’s happy and sad about this.  She said she never listed the business for sale, but was approached by a realtor and made an offer she couldn’t refuse.  She says it’s like selling a house, she spent so much time there, she has great memories and she’s had fun running the restaurant, but at 81 years old, maybe it’s time to slow down (which for her will mean only running 1 restaurant, Harrison’s Restaurant in Tipp City).

This picture shows Mary and her youngest daughter Kelley in November 1998 at the opening night of the Wellington for friends and family.

You can dine there tonight- Saturday, and they’ll open on Monday, when they are usually closed and Tuesday for the last time.  She encourages anyone with gift certificates to please come use them.  She’ll also honor them at Harrision’s if you have a receipt showing the balance (once they close down the registers at Wellington they won’t know what’s on the card- hence the need for a receipt.)

Mary is quick to share that her success would not have been possible without the support of her loyal employees, many of whom have been with her for 20-30 years. She was extremely touched when she shared that even with all the rumors of them closing, none of her employees left. They told her they’d be there as long as she was. She’d taking some of them to Harrison’s with her, which will make her life easier. They’ve been working to get staffed up after the pandemic and by being able to have some of her trusted staff move there, she’ll be able to work less. She looks forward to traveling with her grandchildren this summer.

In asking her about opening The Wellington, she told me it was a funny story. She was a big golfer and had memberships at Meadowbrook & Dayton Country Clubs. She got an invitation to the grand opening of Country Club of the North and she and a golfing gal pal were so impressed they bought memberships without consulting their husbands.  They ended up buying a house there as well.  She decided if she was going to live there and play there, she might as well work there too,  so that’s when she opened The Wellington.

One of the Grande Dames of Dayton Restaurants, Mary opened The Barnsider on North Main in 1975 by with her brother and business partner Ray Jean. She ran the front of the house, while he handled the kitchen. After 41 years in business, The Barnsider closed in May of 2016.  The family also owns Blueberry Cafe, which is run by her daughter Kelly and her granddaughter just started waiting tables there recently.

When asking Mary about how she got in the business she says she started working at a local mom and pop diner when she was in junior high to save money to put her self through school.  Starting as a dishwasher, then eventually moving up to serving burgers, fries and pies.  Once she’d been married and had 3 daughters, she knew she wanted to have a business and she thought about what she knew and decided a restaurant was what she wanted.  So she got a job in a Chinese/American restaurant on Reading Road in Cincinnati, where she could learn while getting paid.  She told the owners she wanted to learn it all so she could open her own place someday. She did it all there, and after 3 months, the chef announced he wast taking his first vacation and left Mary in charge of the kitchen. Mary decided she liked it and then started to look for her own place.  She said she knocked on doors to find a location willing to sell and that’s how she started The Barnsider.

She shares the advice “try to work for someone first, learn while they pay you and don’t do something you don’t know. Start small, and you can grow.  Know something about what you do before you do it.”

We asked Mary where she goes when she eats out and she said Tsao’s Cuisine Chinese Restaurant on Colonel Glenn in Fairborn or Fu Mon Lau on St Rt 725 near the Dayton Mall. She also loves the chicken wings at Harrison’s. While not a big sweet eater, she loves a well made cherry pie.

Mary hopes folks will come out to the Wellington to say goodbye, and insists that so many of their guests have become friends and she looks forward to staying in touch over lunches in the future. And of course she says you can always visit her at Harrison’s where she’ll work mainly days.

Jollity Still Winning After 1 Year

June 16, 2022 By Brian Sharp

Opening a restaurant post pandemic may have seemed ridiculous to some, but after one year they are still going strong! Situated in the Fire Blocks district is this big city shotgun style restaurant with a small bar in front, seating at the platform kitchen and tables along one wall.

The three owners (2 chefs and 1 front of house manager) are present and involved. The menu changes regularly so you need to visit regularly!

We stopped in tonight after a reception downtown. We shared a couple appetizers to start. Curry cream corn (a vegetarian option) served warm with tarragon pickled tomatoes, Thai basil oil and rice cracklings. Smooth flavor with a hint of curry at first taste and a little kick at the end. Fried brussel sprouts (a gluten free option) served with fermented barbecue sauce, mustard aioli and Koji salt.

For dinner we chose Chicken Fried Duck and Swordfish. The Chicken Fried Duck fall off the bone served with Izakaya Japanese potato salad – DELICIOUS – bacon pickled mustard seed and house hot sauce. The swordfish(another gluten free option) is served seed crusted with edamame purée, roasted radish, eggplant, asparagus and chili crunch. The entrees seemed to disappear from our plates.

In spite of being fully satisfied – we still needed to consider desserts. We chose a perfectly sized Pineapple Upside Down Pot De Creme (yet another gluten free option). This taste sensation served in layers starts with pineapple jam, cherry cake crumble and whipped topping. In true pot de crème style you must take the spoon all the way to the bottom to experience all of the layers of this perfectly flavored (not too sweet) dessert.

If you’ve not been to Jollity, you need to visit…and go back often. The menu changes often and I know I cannot wait to experience more. I love all of the options we have in downtown Dayton and this is certainly one of the best!

Young’s Jersey Dairy’s 13th Cheese Anniversary

June 15, 2022 By Dayton937

Young’s Jersey Dairy has been making and selling our own cheese for almost 13 years now. The idea for cheese curds came from some of their customers, specifically customers from Wisconsin and Minnesota. They hadn’t even heard about curds until then.

After we started making the cheese curds we decided to serve them as fried breaded curds. Dan Young, Chief Ice Cream Dipper, started experimenting with different breaded cheese curd recipes that he created. After trial and error Young decided to reach out to his friend, Chef Stanziano, for a different recipe. We’ve been using that breaded curd recipe since! Young’s now has a scholarship in Chef Stanziano’s name that is awarded once a year to a student in the culinary program at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center.

Not only does Young’s have deep fried cheese, they also make and sell squeakers. Squeakers are cheese curds that have been aged like other cheddar cheese.

The Ultimate Gift Guide for Drinking Dads on Father’s Day

June 15, 2022 By Brian Petro

It is not flesh and blood, but the heart which makes us fathers and sons. – Johann Friedrich von Schiller

A father is not always related by flesh and blood. They can be the person that comes into your life later as a mentor during school or work. They can be someone that a parent starts to see or someone that lives in the neighborhood that looks over everyone and lends a hand when a hand is needed. Fathers are there, sometimes silently, to help support the people they care about, whether or not those people are their children or people that need the encouragement.

The approach for looking for gifts for Father’s Day was the same as we took for Mother’s Day. In fact, if you want to take a look at the article we published for that day, there are some suggestions that dad might also appreciate. You’ll find some great tools here for dad, some food and drink for him to enjoy, and a few other odds and ends. Let’s dive right in!

Essential at home mixology kit

DIY For DAD

Essential At-Home Mixology Kit – $73.99 – Most beginner kits for home bartenders are the tools they need to make cocktails. Jiggers, strainers, shakers, the works. And those are out there. But this will help create and store infusions of spirits, simple syrups, or other kitchen staples—a next-level set for the home bartender.

Cocktail bitters kit

Cocktail Bitters Making Kit – $79.99 – There is a wide array of bitters on the market. From the ubiquitous Angostura brand to more customized and niche flavors. The Man Crates bitters making kit has the bottles, ingredients, and recipes needed for dad to make the bitters he wants for his favorite cocktails.

The New Craft of the Cocktail – $35.00 – King Cocktail, Dale DeGroff, is the father of the modern cocktail movement. One of his first books, The Craft of the Cocktail, was given a refresh in 2020 and re-released with new cocktails, new techniques, and a decade of experience with classic cocktails. A must-have for any bartender’s shelf.

A Taste of Arriba Tequila – $41.37 – Having premium spirits in your house, at least a small selection of them, is a joy. But finding the right ones can be a challenge. Enter The Spirit Co. tasting boxes. They offer spirits from all over the world and across the flavor spectrum, from gin to whiskey to, you guessed it, tequila.

The Cocktail Box. Co. Margarita Cocktail Kit – $22.99 – If they have to travel, make sure they travel with a good cocktail! These kits from The Cocktail Box Co. have everything you need but the liquor to make quality drinks anywhere. Put them in your bag as you walk out the door rest assured that you have at least one good drink waiting for you on the journey.

Baseball bat decanter

Tools Of The Trade

Baseball liquor decanter – $139.95 – Every bar needs a conversational piece. Having this bat can start an array of conversations, from talking about the liquor in the vessel to the status of their favorite team. You could add some glasses from their favorite baseball team to complete the look!

Clear Ice Mold – 2″ cube – $35.00 – The pinnacle of ice in the bartending world is clear ice. It is something that bar programs worldwide strive to add to their drinks, not just for their clarity but for their chilling properties. This box will help them make it in their freezer for entertainment or a nice night at home.

Thor’s Hammer Bottle Opener – $12.99 – Dad can lift this hammer. And then he can use it to smash open his beer or pop! For the comics fan out there, this is a fun little addition to their bar area. And can be set in the middle of a table to see if anyone but Thor CAN lift it if the party gets a little slow.

Vinloq Wine Preservation System – $89.00 – Keeping a bottle of wine fresh once opened has challenged people through the ages. An anesthesiologist and wine lover had created a system that still allows the wine to breathe slowly, preserving the taste longer. No vacuum seals or other complex contraptions are required!

Deep 6 Cocktail bowl and box

Deep Six Communal Bowl – $74.99 – Tropical cocktails can add a hint of warm weather all year round. This bowl from Cocktail Kingdom is a perfect way to serve them. Large enough to serve two or three people, this is another excellent conversational piece for when they and their friends get together.

Swamp Dragon The Dragon Clutch

Something Completely Different

Swamp Dragon Hot Sauce The Dragon Clutch – $15.99 – The hot sauce aisle can be intimidating if they are a fan of heat and flavor on their food. Swamp Dragon has a unique approach to hot sauce: they took out the vinegar and added liquor! Their Dragon Clutch gives a small sample of each sauce so they can find the one that works for them.

Couch Cup Holder – $25 – There is not a father out there that does not like something to drink while they are watching television or reading a book on the couch. This holder clings to the armrest at the end of any couch, allowing them to put bottles, cans, and even wine glasses in it and be confident they will stay put.

Coleman Stainless Steel Growler – $44.99 – They can take this with them camping or just have it for the house! This 64 oz./1,892 mL growler will keep beverages cold for several days in its vacuum double-walled insulation and easy-to-use flip top. No matter how they use it, their drink’s temperature will be just right.

Big Bourbon Beard Box

Big Bourbon Beard Box – $60.00 – Dad always wants his beard looking well-groomed and presentable. This set from the Duke Cannon Supply Company helps them care for their beard and leaves them smelling like bourbon. If you need more reasons to support this company, a portion of their proceeds goes to veterans’ causes!

There is so much more out there for fathers. This is an excellent place to start looking, but you can go all over your town or the internet to discover what they want. If they have a special place in your life for what they have done, make sure you take time to show that to your father. They can always use a little extra appreciation. Happy Father’s Day!

Yellow Spring Vegan Restaurant To Close

June 14, 2022 By Guest Contributor

“Four years ago, we bubbled with anticipation of what 134 Dayton Street would become. We had just signed our lease and we were crafting our name and fine-tuning our vision for The Greene Canteen. We have always been passionate about health & wellness and sustainability. We invested in our community and sought out local partnerships and collaborations which often put us in contact with other small business owners, artisans, farmers and interesting people in general.
Reflecting on these last four years, I’ve come to the realization that our lives have been much like those of farmers. A farmer clears land, plants seeds, nourishes the seeds, and if things go right, the farmer has a bountiful harvest. Additionally, farmers must also plan for unexpected situations and must troubleshoot challenges (drought, floods, infestations, etc.) every year. The moment the farmer plants a seed, there is no guarantee.
Our lives have felt much like that. We’ve built a beautiful space, made all the necessary upgrades to make the space function, crafted an evolving menu based off customers’ desires, and hired and trained a team. We planned for unexpected situations…what if it rains/snows so much that if affects foot traffic? What if the price of avocados triples? What if _________?
We never planned for a pandemic. Covid-19 has changed all of our lives and has changed the food industry forever. Since 2020, we have built and rebuilt this business a handful of times. We have hired & trained, hired & trained, hired & trained, etc. constantly. We have lost suppliers and faced shortages (where are we going to get our to go boxes? Where are we going to get our frozen berries? No more XL gloves? Avocados, again?). The costs have skyrocketed. Not just labor, but every single item. The costs of gloves quadrupled. On top of all that, add in the actual health threat of Covid-19. When numbers spike, that means more disruptions (more employees who cannot work due to illness and more customers are staying home). Now, multiply all of this by 2. We have two “farms” and our other “farm” in located 55 miles away.
After reflecting over a very long winter, we realized that this “new normal” is not sustainable for us. We were so busy focusing on the health & wellness of our businesses, employees and customers, that we neglected our own personal health (pretty ironic when you consider the intention of The Greene Canteen.). So, we’ve decided to change that.
We’ve decided to sell The Greene Canteen so we can focus on our personal health and happiness (and only tend to one “farm”). Local restauranteur, Miguel Espinosa has purchased The Greene Canteen. While his vision will be a little different, you will see some similar menu items and familiar faces; Miguel intends to keep all team members of The Greene Canteen.
The next couple of weeks are going to be busy; we’re trying to expand our hours and see as many friendly faces as possible before our final goodbye. Our last day of operation will be June 30th. If you have a chance, please stop in grab that last Dirty Banana or Spicy Chicky Sandwich. If you have gift cards, please make sure you use them before July 1st. Please check our social media for expanded hours as well as any retail sales.
If you don’t get to say your “goodbye”, don’t worry. You will see us bopping around town when we’re not at Brezel. In fact, you might see us out and about more often.
Thank you for all your support – without you, we wouldn’t be here today. Life takes you on some interesting paths. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
XO,
Brittany & Tim

Dayton Restaurant Makes 100 Most Loved Restaurants in the US List

June 14, 2022 By Dayton937

DoorDash  unveiled its first annual awards list honoring the top 100 Most Loved All Star Restaurants in the United States for 2022. The restaurant partners on this list are not only good at their craft, they’re also reliable, top-rated by consumers, and exceptional at operations — fewer than 1% of restaurants on DoorDash qualified.  DoorDash’s 2022 Most Loved All Stars list celebrates the local restaurants that go above and beyond for their customers’ online orders, time and time again.

The only Ohio restaurant to make the list is Dayton’s own Amar India. While the eatery across from the Dayton Mall was named, Surjit Singh Mattu, a native of India, owns two other Dayton-area restaurants: Jeet India near The Mall at Fairfield Commons and Amar India North on Miller Lane.  His family has been serving Indian food in the area for over thirty years.

Chicken Tikka Masala with garlic naan,  Tandoori chicken,  Samosas, Aloo Paneer and the veggie Korma seem to get the most raves, according to their Yelp reviews.

The Most Loved All Stars list was generated by analyzing data from April 2021 to April 2022. All restaurants who achieved Most Loved status for at least 10 months qualified for All Star in-app promotion and relevant local lists. Those merchants with five stores or less who had achieved Most Loved status for 12 consecutive months were ranked by average overall customer rating with the top 100 being named to the US list.
