Take Us Home: A Dayton Film from Israel

October 22, 2012 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

If I told you there is a touching documentary that tells the story of the exodus of a family of Ethiopian Jews to Israel  – would you think it’s a Dayton film? Well – it is! TAKE US HOME is the most recent documentary by Aileen LeBlanc, known for telling the Joe Desch story through Dayton Codebreakers. Aileen worked with a Dayton-based team that included Mike King, Jim Klein, Michael and Sandy Bashaw, John Mays, Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, and many others.  Major support for this project came from The Levin Family Foundation and numerous local partnerswho helped bring the story to life.

TAKE US HOME follows Fekadu who has been waiting for ten years in Ethiopia to go to Israel to reunite with his siblings and be welcomed into a more full experience with his Jewish faith. We see the rest of his family get the go-ahead for the trip, but Fekadu, his wife and their six children must stay behind. They learn their emigration is in jeopardy because of their adopted son, Worku. They must leave him behind or be forced to stay in Ethiopia under religious persecution. The audience watches the challenging decisions between faith, family and freedom. We watch how the events unfold in Ethiopia and Israel. Even returning ‘home’ to their Israel is not easy as the Ethiopian Jews are outcasts; they are overwhelmed by life in the high-tech, Hebrew-speaking country and their Jewish-ness is doubted among their new countrymen.

The Dayton premiere of this award-winning documentary will take place on Thursday, November 15 at the Dayton Art Institute. It’s presented as part of the Cultural Arts and Book Festival in partnership with FilmDayton, The Dayton Art Institute, 91.3 FM WYSO, and the Jewish Community Relations Council. A 7 PM reception precedes the 7:30PM screening of the film. Immediately following, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers. As a special treat Worku and Fekadu will be in attendance to answer your questions about their story! Tickets are only $5 in advance and $7 at the door and may be purchased through The Dayton Art Institute Web page. [yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wCfzmj9CSY&feature=plcp’]

A Sinister Approach to Found Footage Genre

October 21, 2012 By Mike Ritchie Leave a Comment

From the producer of Paranormal Activity and writer/director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister is being marketing as a horror film which it is but is much more than your run of the mill haunted house story. Its part horror, suspense, psychological thriller, supernatural ghost story, true crime drama and even part snuff film.  It gives plot nods to The Amityville Horror and in smaller extent The Strangers. Ethan Hawke plays Ellison Oswalt a true crime writer moving his family into a murder house so he can write a book about it and re-ignite his career.  The local sheriff’s none to pleased or happy with their presence given the former residents demise and Oswalts reputation and best seller Kentucky Blood.

It’s a different/unique take on the ‘found footage’ genre, having the main character find old home movies stashed up in the attic. The audience watches the strategically placed Super 8’s with him throughout the movie sharing his feeling and emotions. Some start innocently with family get-together’s but end up gruesome. The films grainy footage, high realism and creepy melancholy ambiance give off feelings of hidden discomfort watching them through windows or witnessing a creepy crawl in their homes. A few reels in we see Mr. Boogie. Hawke’s character slowly tries to put the pieces together as things happen around the house from bumps in the night to ghostly projector running. We watch as he slowly starts to mentally unravel while his wife deals with his bizarre behavior and the situation’s influence on the kids. Despite some drawings on the wall the scares for the most part are creative and original.   Past and present events play with his conscious showing an inner struggle questioning his own motivations and the building driving/obsessive desire to know more about what happened and why. Has he written true crime for his own personal gain and legacy or an honest desire to bring justice to the victim’s?

The supernatural element picks up mid-way and the music makes the movie just as scary and perverse as the plot.  We hear subtle background voices whisper in Oswalt’s ear as he creeps around the dark house and genuinely uncomfortable music and effects in the projection scenes, planting a subconscious toying suggestion, though the box was meant to be found, you’re really not supposed to be seeing this. With help from one of the local PD he slowly gathers information on the entity, its purpose uncovering a pattern. The entities appearances are creatively strategic as one might expect to see it waiting in the corner when a character enters a room or a door is closed. Sinister’s ending is dark, twisted, ballsy and disturbing even making movie sleuths ahead of Hawks character think, are they really going there?  Then again how many true crime stories have happy endings?
Much of the tension is built on slow burn suspense and anticipation of what might or is about to happen. There’s of course a few jump scares but many you don’t see coming. The movie will genuinely disturb some people. Several scenes are Saw level violent which isn’t completely expected heightening the impact.  A lot of Sinister is what your mind might conjure up while reading a true crime novel of the movie, put on screen.  One of its great elements is the combination of supernatural/gore and real life horror. To a certain point the movie happens in a real life setting. Hawke’s character doesn’t succumb to the stereotypical actions a character/victim usually does instead comes off real, like a normal guy who happens to write about unexplained, gruesome events and is watching/experiencing them himself.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN & Digital News at THE NEON

October 17, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

All of us at THE NEON have been working long hours the past several days, and I hope you’re able to discern this newsletter – my eyelids are quite heavy as I type this note. As soon as the benefit was over on Sunday night, we began prepping our projection booth, auditoriums and lobby for some major changes and improvements. On Monday morning, the 35mm projection gear was removed, and new digital projectors (and servers and cases and lenses and cables and monitors and…) began to arrive that afternoon. While technicians have been preparing our new system, the staff has been busy painting, cleaning and painting some more. Our old carpet is being torn up right now, and the new carpet will be laid this afternoon.

Sunday’s benefit was a big success! Thanks so much to all of you who attended. We set our limit to 120 tickets…and we sold the 120th ticket just as the party was getting started. Additional thanks to everyone who made a donation to our cause! Our goal for fundraising was set at $25,000, and we’re currently at $22,160. That’s really wonderful!

On Friday, we will open with all new digital projection. While we will hold onto our last two titles – SLEEPWALK WITH ME and ARBITRAGE – we’ll also open a new documentary that has been a huge hit on the festival circuit. SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN is part mystery part historical document, and music lovers can’t get enough.

Synopsis for SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN: “Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez, the greatest ’70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late ’60s by two celebrated producers struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics, they recorded an album which they believed would secure his reputation as the greatest recording artist of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation leads them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez.” (Sony Pictures Classics) Click this link to visit the official site.

“Help support DATV and be inspired by short films that aim to make a difference in our lives. DATV presents the MEDIA THAT MATTERS SHORT FILM FESTIVAL on Thursday, November 8th at 7:30pm, at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton. The MEDIA THAT MATTERS SHORT FILM FESTIVAL is the premier national showcase for short films on the most important topics of the day. The films engagediverse audiences and inspires them to take action. The festival features 12 jury selected short films that tackle a broad range of social issues with humor, humanity and honesty in 12 minutes or less.” (provided by DATV) Tickets are $10 each, and we have a few available at our box office and on DATV’s site. For more details about the event and the films, visit the official site.

Though we’ve got lots to still learn (training on the new projection equipment will begin this afternoon), this weekend marks the start of a new era for THE NEON – the culmination of months worth or research and preparation. We hope to see you soon.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support!
All the best,
Jonathan

If you still want to see THE MASTER, Thursday will be your last chance to see it with us. On Friday, we will open a film that has had the most requests this year – SLEEPWALK WITH ME. ARBITRAGE had a solid opening weekend…so it will stick around.

Synopsis for SLEEPWALK WITH ME: From the producers of THIS AMERICAN LIFE, this is the film that Ira Glass has been talking about! “When an aspiring stand-up fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents.” (IFC Films)

The festivities will start at 4:00 with delicious appetizers provided by Meadowlark, Roost and Coco’s Bistro. ARBITRAGE Now Playing at THE NEON!

October 5, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Special thanks to everyone who came out and supported THE DOWNTOWN DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL. With enthusiastic crowds, 3 visiting directors, and 4 sold-out shows, this turned out to be the most successful festival in THE NEON’s history. I’m pleased to announce that the votes for our audience awards were very tight…which means that audiences were really liking several selections. Our “Audience Award – Best Feature” went to LOVE FREE OR DIE, and our “Audience Award – Best Short” went to SABBATICAL. Many congrats to those filmmakers!

We’ve moved forward this weekend at THE NEON.  ROBOT AND FRANK just left, and today we opened the new thriller starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon – ARBITRAGE.  If you still need to see THE MASTER, you have one more week.

Synopsis for ARBITRAGE: “When we first meet New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller on the eve of his 60th birthday, he appears the very portrait of success in American business and family life. But behind the gilded walls of his mansion, Miller is in over his head, desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire to a major bank before the depths of his fraud are revealed. Struggling to conceal his duplicity from loyal wife Ellen and brilliant daughter and heir-apparent Brooke, Miller’s also balancing an affair with French art-dealer Julie Cote. Just as he’s about to unload his troubled empire, an unexpected bloody error forces him to juggle family, business, and crime with the aid of Jimmy Grant, a face from Miller’s past.” (Roadside Attractions) Click this LINK to visit the official site for ARBITRAGE.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmJSV9ePx7c’]

We’re less than 2 weeks away from our big benefit…and I’ve got some new details for you (if you didn’t read the e-mail I sent out a few weeks ago, you can check it out here). Tickets can now be purchased at our box office and on-line via paypal. WDTN recently did a story about our conversion and benefit…if you didn’t catch it, you can see the video by visiting their site. I also stopped by LIVING DAYTON last week…to see that piece, visit their site. The items for our auction are rolling in. J Todd Anderson of Oakwood – well-known for being the storyboard artist to The Coen Brothers – has donated a hand-signed print of a storyboard from THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Martin Sheen has donated 2, autographed screenplays from THE WEST WING (we even sent the pilot to Allison Janney and had her sign it, too). Local filmmakers Julia Reichert, Steve Bognar and Jim Klein have added an exciting package of award-winning films – A LION IN THE HOUSE, THE LAST TRUCK and GROWING UP FEMALE. I’m supplying a copy of THE RUBI GIRLS documentary (which has yet to be released on DVD) as well as an autographed poster of the Girls. And lastly, THE NEON will auction off naming rights to the small auditorium. Stay tuned to next week’s newsletter for your chance to submit a bid if you’re unable to attend the benefit. Click the AMELIE picture below to visit the benefit website – where you can purchase tickets or make a donation to our campaign.

SLEEPWALK WITH ME – a film that many people have been asking about (due to Ira Glass urging his listeners) – is set to open October 12!

All the best.
I hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

October 4, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Hello Dayton! This week mainly focuses on new openings for the week. Opening the week of 10/05 there are some great new movies!

TAKEN 2

Liam Neeson is back for more in this sequel to 2008’s Taken. His family targeted by a vengeful crime boss in Istanbul, retired CIA agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) must fight an army of killers to ensure their safe return in this action sequel from director Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3) and producer/co-writer Luc Besson (who penned the screenplay alongside Taken scribe Robert Mark Kamen).

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpaT8NzkLgE&sns’]

FRANKENWEENIE

In this black-and-white short, director Tim Burton tells the story of Frankenstein’s monster in suburbia as a children’s fable about tolerance. Loving parents Ben (Daniel Stern) and Susan Frankenstein (Shelley Duvall) encourage their son Victor’s (Barret Oliver) home movies, starring their energetic bull terrier, Sparky. Following a terrible car accident, Sparky is dead and Victor is inconsolable. After an experiment with a frog in his science class, Victor gets the idea to make an electrical experiment of his own. After building a fantastic laboratory with only household items, he reanimates his beloved dog. Unfortunately, the family’s nosy neighbors become fearful of the monster, even though he has done no wrong. The climactic ending acts as an homage to James Whale’s original 1931 film and its sequel, The Bride of Frankenstein.

PITCH PERFECT

A feisty coed joins a collegiate a cappella group and upgrades their song selection for the 21st century during the run-up to a major competition in this melodic comedy from Tony-nominated Avenue Q director Jason Moore. Drifting past the various cliques after arriving at college, Beca (Anna Kendrick) pays more attention to the jams pumping in her headphones than the people she passes on her way to class. But all that changes the moment she stumbles into the one place where every misfit has a voice — the campus a cappella group. Although the competition amongst the singers proves surprisingly fierce, there’s just one aspect of the group Beca can’t wrap her head around: All of the songs they perform are at least a decade old. Convinced that they can do better by adding
some contemporary tunes into the mix, Beca whips up an exciting new set list that will set the group apart and leave their rivals in the dust. Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, and Rebel Wilson co-star.

REVIEW: Consumption Of The Heart/The Collective Volume IV Play Englewood Cinema

October 3, 2012 By Mike Ritchie Leave a Comment

Friday night September 28th local director Andrew Copp premiered the only Dayton theatrical showing of his new film Consumption Of The Heart. A 10 minute short that will be included in Jason Hoover’s upcoming collection of zombie themed films in The Collective Volume V premiering at the November Days of the Dead convention in Chicago. Filmed in two days Consumption is a living dead love story about a couple’s relationship on a downward spiral and how it’s changed when both undergo weird, mysterious physical changes which may or may not be caused by an outside epidemic.

Fans, viewers, local and regional filmmakers all watched taking part in a unique Q&A. Several pondered whether the broadcasted situation was the cause and if the resulting changes made a bad relationship better and drew the couple closer together in emotion and love till the bitter end or if it made a bad relationship worse with both deciding that even with the most dire of circumstances happening it was still better than going on as they were. Slyly, Mr. Copp wouldn’t reveal his true intent or message so we’ll just leave that to the viewer to decide.

Consumption takes a unique spin on the living dead genre and asks are they more dead or dying on the inside or out though the ‘consumption’ works on many levels. The music early in the film portrays the feelings of despair, physical neglect and being unwanted. Brandi Bishop does a great job of turning the situation to her advantage for better or worse taking charge and taking what she wants reawakening their passion and desire.  It could be considered the closest thing to a dark Harlequin novel that a blood splattered claustrophobic cannibalistic romance drama of the living dead can get. Mr. Copp seems to want certain questions to linger without answers and sometimes one’s own interpretation/enjoyment of the film ‘is’ the best answer.

Next up Jason Hoovers The Collective Volume IV: Emotions. This installment in the ongoing series features 10 short films 10 minutes long each showcasing a different emotion. Hoover never uses finished movies, he tells eager filmmakers what he wants and then they go out, produce and return with product. The collective covers a vast emotional gamut filmed in several cinematic styles each with its own creativity, story and delivery evoking a different response from the viewer.

3 O’Clock Productions shares the Regret of a genetic scientist who’s experiments take a violent and beastly turn for the worse in this unique crime/drama update of a classic horror tale. Liberty or Death Productions gets us all loose and filled with Lust when a female ghost hunter decades later visits the house of The Wedding Night Tragedy. She sets up equipment and starts to document and explore but slowly and surely becomes seduced by its spirited charms. Freakwolf Productions makes us Fear the dark and feel slightly awkward watching a not so subtle and creepy psychiatrist advice his patent on how to cure her fear. It’s all about taking baby steps my dear.

Dustin Mills Productions asks for Trust as the doomed main character scarfs down the most deadly Italian pie since Nightmare on Elm Street 4’s Soul Pizza. No worries though, ‘help’ is on the way. Over Analyzed Productions feels Envy with a blast of seedy street drama as Sara is jealous of her hot to trot working girl roommate Kate AKA Desire. After Kate goes out on call Sara takes a shot at customer service at the wrong time and ends up in the dubious clutches of the Crowe brothers but never fear Desire returns and an action tag team is born.

Winged Dolphin Productions tells the story of a sadists Schadenfreude. A somewhat bizarre take on Greek Mythology told with a deadly dose of dental dream analysis and sedative’s. Cinephreak Pictures is the Rage as we’re quickly reunited with the Hook Squad as Sara becomes Envy in this funny and action packed bullet flyin, jive talkin grindhouse thrilla.Seems Mama Crowe’s mighty peeved off about the demise of one of the brother’s so she sends out Brutus and his evil diabolical henchmen brethren to the warehouse to dispose of our heroic sassy gorgeous girl-power. It’s a beastly, juiced up, blood bath showdown for sure as Desire and Envy with new found help from a dice throwing killa pimp combat Mama’s sleazy spawn.  The chainsaw carrying, hockey mask wearing, HGH taking family’s pride and joy and the other hygiene challenged brother are ready to kill and mame. Not everybody’s comin home for dinner tonight.

Spiral Filmworks is in Denial as we learn about the most gruesome untold crime story of the early 90’s, the ‘true’ story of Martha ‘Grammy’ Louise Kemper the town church organist and nice old lady….. or so they thought. Told by narration we revisit the town, locations, sites and the house itself Six Degrees of Helter Skelter style while the gruesome, horrific, unspeakable discoveries and facts come to light about the truly sadistic, evil freak she was. Rivaling Gein, Dahmer and HH Holmes for over 6 decades Kemper amassed a staggering list of victims and a macabre museum of souvenirs. The film finishes with her trial, conviction and sentencing. Red Panic Button Films shows Hate a new face with a story of a destructive street punk loser that basically could care less about anything with a particular dislike for junkyard drivers side truck doors. He’s offered help and salvation mid way through but burns it in another act of rebellious pointless defiance. This one doesn’t have a pretty ending.

Last but certainly not least JABB Pictures causes us Grief by showing us the slow minute by minute, second by second basement torture of a guy who’s past has finally caught up with him and his poor completely innocent and unaware girlfriend. This short may be the biggest strain on the eyes making the viewer time conscious, appealing to fans of faux stuff films similar to August Underground. However this scene of circular torture may be the most impressive of the group considering the entire short is one continuous pan shot with no edits or re-takes. So all the yelling, screaming, dialogue and taunting had to continue for the full ten minutes and it was only shot once.

Hoover formed Jabb Pictures in 2008 teaching himself camera work, editing, producing and directing. His first film ‘Spike’ debuted in 2009 at HorrorHound weekend in Cincinnati and was chosen as an official selection at Fright Night Film Fest in Louisville Kentucky.  His second film ‘Polly’ debuted at HorrorHound March 2010. Receiving four out of five stars from several horror movie websites. With momentum on his side in March 2011 he started the Collective series hailed as the most unique short film collection of the independent scene. His first feature film is slated for an early 2013 release.

Consumption of the Heart/Collective Vol 4: Emotion Premiere at Englewood Cinema

September 27, 2012 By Mike Ritchie Leave a Comment

On Friday September 28 Englewood Cinema will showcase eleven big independent film experiences. Englewood is known for its yearly show of support to local filmmakers including Horrorama and featuring films that could be considered ‘slightly’ off the mainstream radar and older vintage classics that otherwise would never see the big screen again.

First up is local independent visionary, artist and Horrorama host Andrew Copp’s short Consumption of the Heart which will appear in the upcoming Collective Volume 5 collection. Mr. Copp is known for his deep, dark and diabolical approach to the camera creating graphic, surrealistic, unforgettable images, scenery and themes turning the most perverse/twisted idea’s into macabre beauty. His 1998 visually disturbing and brutal gore-splashed tale of self torture and blood lust The Mutilation Man ranks as an exercise in stamina for the eyes. 2009’s Quiet Nights of Blood and Pain is a psychological drama dealing with the post emotional/mental effects of heavy combat and the violence of the mind. In 2010 he turned his interest from exploring inner torture to the outer epidermis in the Tattoo Documentary Ink & Flesh featuring Dayton artist Chad Wells. Mr. Copp’s boldest and most controversial vision to date is the upcoming nightmarish, surreal tale of obsessive vengeance for a lost love taking a man’s mind, heart and soul to the brink of utter madness in Church Of The Eyes. Friday nights excursion into the drifting apart emotions and anatomical decay/physical deterioration a couple willingly experiences to rekindle the lost flame is a ‘consuming’ if not physically grotesque show of their true love and devotion to each other. The film is unrated but contains adult themes and graphic content and will be the ONLY Dayton screening.

Next up is Indie filmmaker Jason Hoover and Jabb Pictures fourth volume is a series of ten 10 minute short films by different teams each about a different emotion. Volume three was exclusively directed by women relating to the theme ‘ten minutes to live’. Volume four carries with it a wide variety of celluloid inspiration and degeneration. Featured film Bryan Wolfords Myctophobia is about a woman’s crippling Fear of the dark while David Ross’  black and white Greek import Flash of The Wire explores SCHADENFREUDE, Pleasure in the suffering of others. Two entries by Jason Hoover, Frankie-a take on Grief and the urban mockumentary 101 Taylor Street discusses Denial. There’s a saying about not drinking the Koolaid, well Dustin Mills’ Epidemic about Trust warns us to stay away from the pizza too.  James Mannan covers Lust and ghost hunting in Death Do Us Part. Jim Dougherty’s films Regret about genetic lycanthropy in Contrition, series staple 14 year old Dakota Meyer shows Hate in Luke 1:17. The collection ends with a double dose of grind-house humor about the worlds oldest professional with Happy Hooker Bang Bang, David Paul Bonnell tells the sordid tale of the Envy a girl has for her ‘working’ roommate while its street walking counterpart Jakob Bilinski’s Bloody Hooker Bang Bang: A love Story is all the Rage.

Several of the evening’s filmmakers will be there to sign copies and talk to fans. Friday night September 28th 11:00 pm $5 at the door 320 West National Rd, Englewood Ohio 45322. THE MASTER Opens Friday at THE NEON

September 18, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

The Toronto International Film Festival was great. I saw 29 films in 9 days (plus a few partials). If you’re interested to know about the movies I saw, click the picture below to be directed to my blog . In the coming days (once I’m caught up on NEON matters), I’ll post one last entry with my wrap-up. For now, I hope you enjoy this little collage of some of the people I saw during introductions and Q&As. These are all from pictures I took at the festival. Can you name everyone? (I’ll list all their names in next week’s newsletter.)

At THE NEON, we’re moving forward again this week. FAREWELL, MY QUEEN did not perform well enough to stick around for a second week. If you still need to see this film, you only have through Thursday to see it at THE NEON. On Friday, we will open one of the best reviewed films of the year – THE MASTER. This film broke records over the weekend in NYC and LA, and we’re hoping that fans of Paul Thomas Anderson (THERE WILL BE BLOOD, MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS) will be out en masse. ROBOT & FRANK will stick around for another week. (remaining showtimes for this week can be found at our site: neonmovies.com)

Synopsis for THE MASTER: “A Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future – until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader.” (taken from imdb.com) “In the years after WWII, an American intellectual creates a religion. When he meets a troubled drifter, he invites the man to help him spread the new faith. As their congregation increases, the drifter begins to question the religion he once accepted and the mentor who gave his life direction.” (taken from metacritic.com)

Earlier today, we had another director confirm that he will attend this year’s Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival. That makes three directors attending our fest…and I think that’s pretty incredible. Jonathan Lisecki – director of GAYBY, Travis Mathews – director of I WANT YOUR LOVE, Glenn Kiser – director of SABBATICAL (part of the TOP DRAWER SHORTS program) will attend and answer your questions. Read all about the films on the official website. The 7th Annual Fest is set for Sept. 28-30. Watch the trailers and mark your calendars…it’s gonna be great! Special thanks to DAYTON MOST METRO, WYSO and DAYTON DAILY NEWS for already committing to provide stories about this year’s films. To hear an interview I recently did about the festival on WYSO, please click this link.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NNr7NtVIFk’]

And on the horizon is our benefit to assist with our digital conversion – set for October 14 (if you didn’t read that e-mail, you can check it out here). Tickets can now be purchased at our box office and on-line via paypal. If you’re not able to attend our benefit, you can also make a donation on the benefit page. WDTN recently did a story about our conversion and benefit…if you didn’t catch it, you can see the video by visiting their site.

All the best.
I hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Glenn Beck | Unconditional | Trouble With The Curve | The Master

September 18, 2012 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Hello Dayton!
This week mainly focuses on new openings for the week. Opening the week of 09/21 will be a faith based movie Unconditional, Clint Eastwood’s Trouble With The Curve, a repeat performance of Queen Live in Budapest, and Glenn Beck’s Unelectable.

GLENN BECK’S UNELECTABLE TOUR (09/20 & 09/25)

Glenn Beck has broken so many boundaries that he created a whole new realm of talk radio and caused a stir on cable television. This time Glenn Beck is featured in a comedy tour, where he will address everything from Democrats, Republicans, law makers and law breakers, no one is spared his wrath of humor! Election day is coming whether we like it or not, so you might as well laugh before you cry! Join Beck for an unforgettable night that will have you wishing he ran for office if for no other reason than to be the first politician that got laughed at on purpose! This will be playing at Dayton South and Huber Heights on Thursday 09/20 at 8pm with a repeat performance Tuesday  09/25 at 730pm.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHyAZ9xrhm4′]

UNCONDITIONAL (09/21-09/27)

Samantha Crawford (Lynn Collins) is living the dream life: she is happily married, she lives on a ranch with her cherished horse, and the stories she both writes and illustrates are becoming published. When her husband Billy (Diego Klattenhoff) is killed in a senseless act of violence, Samantha not only loses her faith but also her will to live. Then a death-defying encounter with two children leads to a reunion with a childhood friend Joe (Michael Ealy). Sam then watches Joe taking care of the kids in his under-resourced neighborhood and begins to find her faith again. Inspired by true events. This film will open on 09/21 with weekend showtimes as follows: 11:40am, 2:15pm, 4:45pm, 7:15pm, and 10pm. For Monday-Thursday the showtimes will be 2:15pm, 4:45pm, 7:15pm, and 10pm.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOW9w-j6_1Q’]

TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE (09/21-09/27)

Also opening this week is Clint Eastwood’s newest movie, Trouble with the Curve. And starring Amy Adams, Chelcie Ross, and Raymond Anthony Thomas, this feature is about an ailing baseball scout who decides to have his daughter come with him on his last trip to recruit new players. A movie that teaches the audience to handle “whatever life throws at you,” this feature will open in theaters on September 21st.

This is Clint’s first film as an actor with a director that’s not himself since 1993 In the Line of Fire.  I am looking forward to this film as Clint never disappoints in anything he does.  Who doesn’t love Clint Eastwood?  I would like to see him win an Oscar and maybe star in another Western before he goes to the Hollywood in the sky.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHZd0FTX8lk’]

THE MASTER (09/21-09/27)

I am really looking forward to this film!  Paul Thomas Anderson is a great director in my view and add in a cast of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phonenix and Amy Adams and this film is primed and ready to deliver a great telling of a story!  The film was released in five theaters this past weekend, four of which showed in it 70mm.  It was a huge success and had a very high per-screen average, setting new box office records.  No doubt because people did want to see it on 70mm which isn’t around much these days anymore and because of it’s awards it has taken.  The huge opening for “The Master” beats the per-screen-average record for a live-action feature debut set earlier this year by Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” which made $522,996 when it opened on four screens in May for an average of $130,749.  Master did $729,745 for a per-screen of $145,949, breaking box office records.

Synopsis; A Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future – until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader.

Toronto Film Fest – Day #9

September 15, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

I saw 2 final films today…which took my final count to 29 full screenings (there were 3 partial screenings, too).

First off, I saw a lovely new adaptation of GREAT EXPECTATIONS by Mike Newell (director of ENCHANTED APRIL, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, and a whole lot more).  This adaptation, though clearly condensed in order to be told in 2 hours, is an old-school, literal adaptation with lovely photography, great costumes and a wonderful score.  The cast is wonderful – Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch, Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Jeremy Irvine as “older” Pip (he was the star of WAR HORSE).   Interestingly, Young Pip is played by Jeremy Irvine’s younger brother Toby, and he’ll have quite a career should he decide to continue acting.  Sally Hawkins (who is always delightful to see) plays Mrs. Joe.  This adaptation will be well received by NEON regulars…though it has been picked up by a brand new distributor – so we hope we can establish a good relationship with them.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10W1rOJ6aME’]

For my last film of the festival, I saw Lee Daniels’  (director of PRECIOUS) latest film – THE PAPERBOY.  Though Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron give “nice” performances, the material is all over the map.  The film is seriously fractured with tone and themes shifting from scene to scene.  Some of the cutting seems strange and forced – leading me to believe that coverage wasn’t good or performances weren’t always up to par.  Eric Kohn of IndieWire wrote, “Lee Daniels’ THE PAPERBOY is a rare case of serious commitment to outright silliness…It’s possible to enjoy aspects of THE PAPERBOY if you assume a certain self-awareness behind the campier bits, but even then, the movie drowns in an overwhelming barrage of excess.”  Though Efron was present at the screening, Kidman was not.  Is she distancing herself from the picture?  We’ll never know.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2GMwWaDSr0′]

In the coming days, I’ll write one last Toronto wrap-up…and I’ll include some personal photographs from the trip.  So check back again on Tuesday or Wednesday – once I’ve had a bit of time to catch up on sleep, wash my clothes, get back to work and process all 29 films I screened.

Thanks for reading!

Toronto Film Fest – Day #8

September 14, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

I only saw two film in their entirety today…I started a third, but I due to not connecting with the characters, I decided that a nap was in my best interest.

First off, I saw LOVE, MARILYN -a documentary about Marilyn Monroe – based on personal journals and personal letters that were recently discovered in storage (in addition to writings and interviews from friends and colleagues).  Big stars – like Glenn Close, Ellen Burstyn, Hope Davis, Viola Davis, Ben Foster and Lindsay Lohan – read the letters.  The movie reveals a tormented, insightful star who seemed to know exactly what was happening around her.  That said, the performances of the readings were distracting.  Instead of voice-over, the actors perform the pieces via green screen – and their images are transposed over backdrops, archival footage, etc.  I found it to be rather annoying.  However, the archival material and interviews seemed more organic and worth the ride.

PASSION, the latest film from Brian De Palma, is a laughable thriller based on the French film LOVE CRIME.  The movie stars Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace, and it starts out very confusing.  The two lead actresses look to be the same age – though one is the corporate boss and the other is an assistant.  The chemistry between these two is rather flat, and the tone changes to camp rather quickly.  The music cues and other cheap devices used to confuse the audience are abysmal.  The movie is about how Rapace’s character plots revenge on her boss after she stole one of her ideas in order to advance with the company.  In a word, this film is bad.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaSVR4pCKT4′]

In the evening, I went to see Madonna’s latest show at the Air Canada Center.  It was a complete blast – and quite a brilliant display of cutting-edge stage craft and lighting.

2 more films tomorrow…and I’m looking forward to both!

Thanks for reading!

Wow…though my eyes are starting to blur a bit and my feet are slightly dragging, I’m still makin’ it to all the screenings I’ve got on the docket.

First of the day was Terrence Malick’s TO THE WONDER.  You might remember that THE TREE OF LIFE earned the title of most walk-outs in NEON history…and I think this film might give TREE OF LIFE a run for its money.  This visually lovely and poetic film is quite experimental…and it not only feels like a follow-up to TOL, it feels repetitive.  With identical shots from TOL, some similar “plot” lines and similar tone, this film will have both fans and detractors.  I heard one woman late this afternoon say to her friend, “I saw TO THE WONDER this morning.  It’s the worst movie I’ve EVER seen.”  The film is a rumination on relationships.  It has some wonderful moments, but I ultimately found the film to be tedious.  If I had to watch Olga Kurylenko skip through one more wheat field or twirl around down one more grocery store aisle, I might have to end it all (see below).  Ben Affleck seemed to phone in his performance (or perhaps he just wasn’t given much to do), and Rachel McAdams is certainly not the lead of this film (regardless of the marketing you might see).

Next I saw STILL – a Canadian film directed by Michael McGowen…starring James Cromwell and Genevieve Bojuld (Bojuld made a surprise appearance during the introduction of the film – it was a delight to see her).  This film is about how an elderly man is building an accessible home on his land for himself and his wife…and how the authorities keep handing him building violations.  The reason the man is building the house is because of the deteriorating health of his wife.  The director talked about how he read about this story from the headlines…and how he worked directly with the family in order to bring the film to life.  It’s a lovely, quiet film with great performances, a great score, and a wonderful backdrop of the Canadian landscape.

PEACHES DOES HERSELF was next on the list.  This film is the a record of a performance done by the rock star/performance artist Peaches.  Originally from Toronto, Peaches has been a part of the Berlin art scene for years.  This transexually charged performance had its highs and lows with some moments that had me (as well as a few folks beside me) in fits of hysterical laughter (some of it was like a train wreck), but it wouldn’t work well at all in a traditional engagement.  That said, it might find an audience at midnight screenings – especially for fans of the Peaches catalog.

My last screening of the night was SUICIDE SHOP – a life-affirming, French, animated, musical film about suicide.  Huh?  It’s true.  This sweet and funny film was directed by Patrice LeConte (RIDICULE and GIRL ON A BRIDGE), and it’s about a shop that sells anything needed to end one’s life.  Due to the recession, sales are up, and the gloomy family are happy to help folks find their preferred method of exiting the world.  The arrival of a new son throws the shop into a tailspin.  Why?  Because he’s too darn jovial.  Though I saw the film in 3D, it’s absolutely not necessary.  Unfortunately, I thought the film lost a little steam in the second and third act (and it’s only 80 minutes).  In addition, I don’t know who the film is for.  It’s full of adult themes, but the narrative arc is rather slight.  That said, I’m still glad I saw it…some of it is wonderful.

Tomorrow I’ll see 2 or 3 films…and then I’m going to a non-TIFF-related event.  I’ll see Madonna in concert, and I have a great seat.

More to come.

Thanks for reading!
