Remember Dayton’s Hottest Club of the 90’s at the Asylum Reunion!

November 15, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

How many of you remember wild nights at the Asylum, Dayton’s Alternative dance club that was on Patterson Road in downtown Dayton?   Or more likely, how many of you don’t remember much of what happened there?

According to club DJ Matt Freeman, the Asylum opened circa 1993 and closed in 2005 (under the club name Fusion).  You’ll have your chance to relive those glory days for one night only, on Friday Nov 23rd at the Asylum Reunion, being hosted at Therapy Cafe, located at 452 E 3rd Street in Dayton.

We asked Freeman about the upcoming event:

What are a couple of your best memories?
MF: The memories of the Asylum are endless. If you were a part of that time, you know how easy it is to still share stories with a fellow club goer even after being closed for over 13 years. I recently met up with Chris Maloney, who worked there for almost the club’s entirety. We have only met up a handful of times in the past years, and we always have a conversations starting off “Remember that time at the asylum?…”. It was such an important part of so many people’s formidable years, it’s the conversation that will never die. Maybe it was the fact the venue brought straight edge kids, goths, punks, b-boys, ravers, college students and outcasts together and it all just made sense. You’d hear techno, industrial, hip hop, disco, 80s wave and it all simply worked. No cell phones, rarely a camera, it was what it was, and you had to be there to experience it all so you never wanted to miss a night. There was a sense of urgency to always be in attendance.
What can folks expect at the reunion?

MF: We do our best to recapture the days of dancing, being social, and sharing memories of that time. We will have the infamous dance cage, which was at one time hung above the crowd at Asylum, live video mixing including photos & video from the Asylum, and two of the club’s longest running DJs, Matt Freeman & Eric Heilman. Music for the evening will include a mix of 80s, 90s, and early 2000s alternative / dance featuring Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Fatboy Slim, Blur, Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Armand Van Helden, Daft Punk, Faithless, KMFDM, Lords of Acid, The Prodigy, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Portishead, Moby, The Bucketheads, Garbage, Beastie Boys, New Order, Ministry, Wink, Orbital, Meat Beat Manifesto, as well as  dance tunes  featuring Beastie Boys, Björk, Blur, The Breeders, The Cure, Daft Punk, Depeche Mode, Fatboy Slim, Filter, Front 242, Garbage, KMFDM, Lords of Acid, Marilyn Manson, Massive Attack, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ministry, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, Portishead, The Prodigy, Rammstein, Sheep on Drugs, Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, Sneaker Pimps, Underworld, and the list goes on…

What do tix cost and can they buy them in advance?
Cover: $5 (NO ADVANCE TICKETS AVAILABLE)*
18+ welcome w/ proper ID
Doors open at 9PM
Therapy Cafe, 452 E. Third St. Dayton Ohio, 45402.
*This event will hit capacity so plan to arrive EARLY, as last year’s reunion hosted close to 300 attendees.

While most books are on the table for sale, there is also a curated auction featuring some very interesting and unusual books, and the opportunity to obtain some extraordinarily rare titles at a reasonable price. The beneficiaries of the 2018 Dayton Book Fair are Rebuilding Together Dayton, The Victory Project and We Care Arts.

Rebuilding Together Dayton works to  build community partnerships that provide home rehabilitation for low-income Dayton Area homeowners, particularly the elderly, so they may live in warmth, safety and independence. All of their work falls into one of four focus areas: safe and healthy housing, youth and corporate engagement, community revitalization and veteran housing.  The average age of their clients is 77, and the average annual income $16,000. Read more about their vision and accomplishments at their website  http://www.rtdayton.org

The Victory Project is a privately funded nonprofit after-school program which mentors disengaged young men in our city. They forged an alliance  between business, criminal justice and faith communities to allow local teens to break the cycle of hopelessness, insignificance and isolation by addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs.  Offering a real alternative to the streets, they are open year round, six days a week, building long-lasting relationships with young men at risk, sharing dinner together every weeknight, providing  individualized tutoring and entrepreneurship models through landscaping and home improvement micro-businesses.  Check out their website at http://www.victoryproject.org/

An uncommon alliance has formed between the business, criminal justice and faith communities to allow our young men to break the cycle of hopelessness, insignificance and isolation by addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

We Care Arts works with developmentally disabled adults and youth, senior citizens with dementia, and the mentally ill to  achieve greater personal independence. Through a variety of art experiences, they promote the artist’s individuality, self esteem, community skills, ability to focus, life skills, responsibility, confidence and job skills.  A team of paid staff and volunteers creates an environment that fosters individual talents and provides  training for each artist. In addition, We Care Arts has developed installations for use in public schools and the “Art on a Cart” program for patients receiving chemotherapy.  Click their website link to learn more!   http://www.wecarearts.org/

We are delighted to be part of the future of these three wonderful organizations and look forward to getting to know them better through partnership and volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
The Book Fair foundation is taking applications for 2019 beneficiaries, more info here.

20 Events That Give Back This November

November 5, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton long ago earned a reputation for being a city that gives back. According to the history of the Dayton Foundation, NCR founder and Chairman John H. Patterson championed innovative projects for the betterment of the community. Joining him in his enthusiasm was his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson, son of John Patterson’s brother, Capt. Robert Patterson, all active community leaders in their own right. A leading businesswoman, Julia Patterson Carnell helped establish the Dayton Art Institute by donating works of art, a mansion that served as the museum’s first home and $2 million towards the construction in 1930 of its current facility.

Today there are over 4000 nonprofits in the region, and to continue the legacy of taking care of our community, there are hundreds of fundraising events to support them.

Here are MostMetro’s list of the top 20 November events we think you should be aware of:

Luminaries of Dayton: Charles G. Bickham

November 3, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer

Charles Goodwin Bickham received the Medal of Honor for “distinguished gallantry” on May 2, 1902, in the Battle of Bayang, during the Moro Rebellion. Lt. Bickham carried a wounded soldier across a “fire swept field.” His medal was awarded by Theodore Roosevelt on April 28, 1904.

He served on the staff of Ohio Governor William McKinley. During the Spanish-American War, he served in Company G, 3rd Regiment, Ohio National Guard, and later in the Ninth Regiment, U.S. Volunteer Infantry. He served during the Philippine-American War in the 28th Regiment, U.S. Volunteer Infantry, under Col. William E. Birkhimer. After receiving his commission in the regular army as a Lieutenant, he served again in the Philippines with the 27th U.S. Infantry under then-Captain John J. Pershing. Lt. Bickham was honorably discharged from the army in June 1910. He never married.

Charles G. Bickham was born in 1867 and died in 1944. He is located in Section 101, Lot 1420. The bronze marker decorating the grave of Charles Bickham was placed there by a gentleman who traveled across the country visiting graves of Congressional Medal of Honor winners, personally paying for the honor of doing so.

Culture Works Unveils a New Look

November 1, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Culture Works has announced a new logo and brand as the organization prepares to enter its 45th year serving the Dayton Region.

“We’re looking to the future—not only of our organization, but of the community as a whole,” said Culture Works Executive Director Lisa Hanson. “Our vision for the arts in the Dayton Region is one of collaboration, dynamism, and expansion. It’s time for our brand to reflect that vision.”

The organization revealed the new logo at its annual meeting on November 1st to a crowd of longtime supporters, community leaders, and arts partners.

Over the course of its history, Culture Works has undergone many significant changes, starting out as the Dayton Performing Arts Fund and later merging with the Miami Valley Arts Council to expand into a regional body which advocates for cultural organizations in a broader geographical area. Throughout this evolution, however, Culture Works’ core mission has remained the same: Strengthening the Dayton Region through the power of the arts.

Rather than an organizational change of course, the new logo represents an enhancement and expansion of Culture Works’ existing roles in the community. In designing the new logo, Culture Works staff and board members sought inspiration from the organization’s rich history and vision for the future. The intersecting lines represent community collaboration, the myriad ways the arts touch our lives every day, and Culture Works’ role as a connector between arts, education, business, government, and individuals. The new color palette represents the vibrancy of our cultural community and the ways in which artists and artistic disciplines feed into and complement one another. Finally, the logo’s circular shape represents unity—a unified voice for the arts, a unified Dayton Region.

The new logo is only the beginning. In the coming months, Culture Works will launch a new website, a new video celebrating individual artists in the Dayton community, and a new arts education portal designed to connect the region’s educators with transformative arts experiences from local organizations.

Artist of the Week: Jennifer Taylor

October 29, 2018 By Bill Franz

Jennifer Taylor at K12 Gallery and TEJAS.

Jennifer is a teacher and administrator in addition to being an artist herself. Behind her you can see the work of some of her elementary school students. Jennifer recently became project manager of the HAALO program, where at-risk teens participate in projects like painting murals.

Jennifer is also a photographer, so she’ll be taking photos for K12 and posting them on social media. When she’s not working Jennifer photographs Dayton’s music scene. You can see some of her work on her facebook page and on instagram @jennifertaylor.photographer

Jennifer also directed a documentary I would love to see. It’s called “The Fall League” and it’s about Dayton’s senior slow pitch softball leagues. That may seem far removed from her work with music, but I understand that music is an important part of the film.

Luminaries of Dayton: Jacob Stickle

October 28, 2018 By Angie Hoschouer Leave a Comment

Jacob Stickle was born in Neckar-Thailfingen, Wurettemberg, Germany on February 26, 1825, son of John Jacob and Katerina Stickle.

Jacob helped his father on the family farm until he was old enough to be apprenticed to a butcher. He learned the trade of butchering and stayed in the business until he immigrated to the United States, landing in New Orleans on May 1, 1849. He arrived in Dayton on the first of June.

On his arrival Jacob started working for Adam Happle, a meat packer whose business was located on Valley Pike in Mad River Township. He worked for $7 a week and board. After two years Jacob had saved enough money to rent a butcher’s stand and later opened a stall in Harshmanville, on Yellow Springs Pike, which he attended for seventeen years.

In 1868, Jacob purchased the brewery of Sander and Stoppelman on Warren Street. When he started the business he decided to use only the best quality products, and to make his beer out of only barley, malt and hops.

In 1881, the City Brewery building burnt down. Jacob Stickle rebuilt and enlarged it at an expense of eight thousand dollars, building a three and a half story brick factory. The ice houses had a storage capacity of 2,000 tons and the beer cellars of 3,000 barrels. The first year the business made 4,000 barrels of beer and by 1882 the brewery was producing 7,000 barrels annually. The business required ten men and several teams for delivering the beer to local businesses.

Jacob married Barbara Drechsel on August 31, 1851 and they had two children. Jacob’s son, William, later helped his father run the brewery. In 1890, the business moved to 653 and 655 Warren Street. Jacob Stickle merged his brewery with The Dayton Breweries Company in 1904 and then sold out his part.

Jacob died on November 20, 1908 and is buried in Section 63 Lot 1126.

Trick or Treat For PEZ

October 21, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Originally created in Vienna, Austria in 1927, PEZ started out as a peppermint breath mint.  PEZ is an abbreviation of PfeffErminZ (German for peppermint)

The first PEZ mints were not served in modern day style PEZ dispensers, but rather were sold in tin containers, very much like modern day Altoids tins.  It wasn’t until 1948 that the first PEZ dispenser was created and  introduced at the Vienna Trade Fair about a year later.  This dispenser was in the form of a cigarette lighter, which the company states was to market their bricks as “anti-smoking” mints, which one would think the design would probably have the nice side effect of making it popular with kids, similar to candy cigarettes and other similar product.

In 1955 they were introduced in the United States and in 1955, the Pez company placed heads on the dispensers and marketed them for children. Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse were among the first character dispensers created.

One of the first character PEZ dispensers, the shape of the 1955 Santa Claus PEZ model is both rare and valuable. Departing from the norm, the dispenser has a round body, although the candy inside remains the same traditional narrow rectangular shape.

Around this time, they also introduced fruity flavored bricks, which significantly boosted salesamong children.  Some of the more  valuable PEZ dispensers to collect are pre-1989 Superhero PEZ dispensers. Easily distinguishable by their lack of feet, these figures vary greatly in condition and rarity. Popular versions include Wonderwoman, Batman, and Bugs Bunny.

In 1973, Pez built a factory in Orange, Connecticut. In 2007 Elvis was immortalized on three different Pez dispensers that were even released in a Limited Edition 3 Pez Gift Set with CD The King lives on which can now be found on ebay for serious collectors.

In 2008, the first Star Trek dispensers were released in a gift set with the seven original series crew and the Starship Enterprise. A second Star Trek gift set, based on The Next Generation series, was released in Fall 2012.

PEZ dispensers have become such collectibles with Snow White and the seven dwarves, The Lord of the Rings, Kiss,  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all part of the collections released by PEZ.  Pezamania is the oldest convention, which has been held in Ohio since 1991, will host it’s annual convention in Cleveland this July 18-20 and bills itself as  “The World’s Largest Gathering of Pez Collectors”featuring an international group of master PEZ collectors, PEZ dealers, and PEZ authors.

PEZ isn’t just about cartoon characters and pop stars.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry  have been turned into dispensers.  There are also special additions sets honoring US Presidents.  The volume 9 PEZ collectible gift set that includes Obama is running about $140 on ebay.  There is even rumor that an an animated film version of PEZ are in the works,

Special Halloween sets of PEZ make it the perfect holiday to turn a whole new generation onto this candy that is even Kosher, vegan, gluten- and lactose-free and contain no artificial colors.

You can order this 12 Assorted Halloween PEZ Dispensers and each dispenser includes 2 PEZ Candy Refills for just $17.99 from the PEZ website.

Six packs of PEZ candy are available for $1.79 in assorted fruit flavors, raspberry, chocolate sour green apple, vanilla cupcake and even candy corn- just perfect for all the little ghosts and ghouls knocking on your door.
