Centerville Has a New Option for Greek Cuisine

July 14, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Opening Monday, July 15th at 10am in the Cornerstone development in Centerville, The Great Greek will be serving up gyros, greek salads, falafels, Grilled Lamb Souvlaki and feta fries  as well as four signature house-made dips, including Hummus, Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata (eggplant dip) and Tirokafteri (spicy roasted red pepper).
and more.  This fast casual eatery is the first Ohio franchise for the Florida based chain.

Miss Karla with a K and Rohit (Rick) Patel

Entrepreneur and 12-year Dayton-area resident and franchise owner Rohit (Rick) Patel shared, “I’m excited to bring the delicious flavors of the Mediterranean to our community,” said Patel, an entrepreneur and 12-year Dayton-area resident. “When I discovered that The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill was built on a foundation of authentic recipes made fresh daily using high-quality ingredients, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of.”

I was lucky enough to attend a sneak peek lunch this weekend.  I was greeted by General Manager, Miss Karla with a K, who exuded charm and warmth as she welcomed my and opened the door for me as she explained how I would order at the counter, get a number and my food would be brought to me at my table.  The small dining room seats about 25 and has a self service soda machine and tables for two, four or six.  The cashier was patient, made sure to explain what came with each dish and seemed excited to take orders.

During the sneak peek, there was a limited menu to choose from. I started my meal with the Spanakopita- spinach and Feta Cheese in a Flaky Puff Pastry.  It was huge over 4 inches long and about 2 inches high. A great vegetarian dish.
For my entree I sampled the gyro plate, which come with Tender Sliced Gyro Meat on Pita Bread with Rice Pilaf or French Fries or Feta Fries. It was a huge portion (I ended up taking half of it home for another meal).
And I couldn’t resist trying the Baklava Ice Cream for dessert. It was creamy and not too sweet with hunk of baklava in it.
The staff was awesome, eager to take care of the guest, keep the dining room clean and several of them stopped by to check on me, to see if I needed anything.  The corporate trainer, in town from Florida was coaching the staff, cross training them so they could hop in to any spot that was busy and making sure they understood hospitality.
I  truly can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu items with  wide variety of customizable options, including the Classic Greek Salad or Rice Bowl with a choice of gyro meat, salmon and more. Guests can indulge in unique offerings like made-to-order, fresh Feta Fries and must-have desserts like Baklava and Rice Pudding.

Franchise owner Rohit (Rick) Patel mentioned he is already looking for additional locations to open in 2025, perhaps Beavercreek, Huber Heights or Springboro, wherever he can find the right space.

The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill specializes in catering large parties, events, and meetings and is perfect for family gatherings. It offers memorable, mouthwatering Mediterranean spreads that include  build-your-own Gyros and savory Souvlaki Skewers accompanied by buttery Rice Pilaf, crisp Greek Salad, authentic dips and delectable desserts, as well as box lunches.

Be sure and check out their Greek eats and tell them DaytonDining sent you!

It’s Sweet 16 for Emily Collins At The Root Beer Stande

July 11, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Emily Collins, the proprietor of The Root Beer Stande on Woodman, is celebrating her 16th anniversary of owning the business this Thursday, July 11th.   In sharing her story about acquiring the business she she told us she graduated from Stivers School for the Arts, left Dayton to attend Ohio University, where she received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree.  Upon graduation she returned to Dayton and struggled to find a job where she could use her degree. So she taught part time and worked in the food industry, as she had through high school and college.  Her dad, who ran Klosterman Bakery  came home one day told her the stand was for sale. Always wanting to own her own business, Emily decided she’d buy the place. So she went to the bank and says they looked at her like she was a crazy 24 year old, but suggested she put a business plan together.

It took her almost a year working with the SBA and in 2008 she actually bought the business from Alex Fabrick. What she didn’t realize is that the business was in bad shape.  So she started making repairs as she could and marketing the Stande to attract new business.  She upgraded the menu, expanding from just hot doge fries and onion rings. She added Hank’s Hearty Burgers Made with Love, Hand-pattied 1/4 pound Angus burger including her favorite, the mushroom swiss burger.

She told us they currently sell about 800 hotdogs a week, with the Foot Long being their #1 seller, followed closely by The Dirty D- a Bacon wrapped, deep fried dog, smothered with chili, mustard, onions and cheese. They also have a pizza menu and added the Sno Shack a couple of years ago.

As part of the 16th anniversary celebration they will have  footlongs dogs buy one; get one for $1.16 on Thursday, July 11.
Floats will be $.99 all day. Hank’s burgers are $6.16.

Emily invites everyone to come celebrate on July 11th, noting “we wouldn’t have made it this long without you!” She also credits her employees for helping her business succeed.  She says she still has many of the same ones she hired 16 years that were in their teens then and now are mother’s working part time. During COVID she made the decision to keep the business open year round, so she could keep her staff employed, added Door Dash and watched their carryout business increase, for which she’s grateful.

On their facebook pages she’s  encourage everyone to bring their classic cars up for pictures and tag us in them.

July 10, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Sonic announced its own value menu, this time dropping prices way below anyone else, with its $1.99 Menu, which includes the new Sonic Queso Wraps that are now available nationwide.

“Now more than ever, consumers are focused on affordable food options, but they shouldn’t have to settle for the same old, tired discounts or boring meals. Many restaurant brands are touting value meals and discounts, and you see a lot of recycled ideas with limited options. At Sonic, we wanted to do something different — something fun — so we focused on variety, which is why we’re introducing the new $1.99 Menu, or what we like to call the FUN.99 Menu,” Ryan Dickerson, the chief marketing officer of Sonic, shared in a statement. “The FUN.99 Menu is all about choice and fun, whether you want any  of our dozen shake flavors, a chili cheese coney, or our iconic tots as a midday snack — it’s all there for just $1.99.”

As for those Queso Wraps, guests can get them in two varieties: the Bacon Ranch Queso Wrap, which comes with white meat, bacon, cheddar cheese, ranch, and white queso in a flour tortilla, and the Southwest Crunch Queso Wrap, made with that same white meat topped with Southwest sauce, tortilla strips, cheddar cheese, and white queso in a flour tortilla.

But that’s not all. Sonic is also offering a mix of snacks, desserts, and entrée items on its $1.99 menu, including a Quarter Pound Double Cheeseburger, Chili Cheese Coney, Bacon Ranch Queso Wrap, Southwest Crunch Queso Wrap, Small Tots, and any of the 12 flavors of Sonic Shakes in a 16-ounce size, including Strawberry, Chocolate and Oreo Cheesecake.

Fans can also get another deal using the Sonic App. There, they can snag half-price drinks and slushies any time they order through the app and half-price Sonic Cheeseburgers on Tuesday nights

Sonic Drive-In Restaurant exterior in Costa Mesa, United States, with large logo sign.

Meanwhile, the “Fun.99 Menu” will be “here to stay” at Sonic’s over 3,500 restaurants “all day, every day,” the Inspire Brands-owned Sonic said.
