Holiday Tips for Dementia Caregivers

December 19, 2023 By Guest Contributor

Do not be surprised if your dementia suffering loved one seems to decline in December. It’s dark early, and routines are disrupted–holidays–which bring travel, visitors, and even decorations can add to the confusion of our dementia suffering loved ones. Your holidays and theirs will be easier with a plan.
Designate shepherds to be with your loved one–especially during large gatherings. Dementia sufferers are overwhelmed by lots of activity. Consider assigning each family member a time slot to sit near and interact with your dementia sufferer. One on one interactions are less frightening–you don’t have to constantly recognize people! Assigning time slots controls the flow of people and ensures that the caregiving is shared so that everyone gets to enjoy the holiday.
In our family, we had a sign up sheet. We told my mom that everybody wanted to spend time with her, so we had to take reservations! She was flattered, and all the family (including grandkids) enthusiastically claimed “their turn with grandma” instead of glumly submitting to “babysitting grandma.” Each family member introduced the next… “Oh, is my turn up? Grandma, here’s Curtis to claim her special time with you,”  and then the previous person would exit. Make sure to schedule people who can manage bathroom breaks, medications and food at the appropriate times.
Wandering increases during the holiday. If you are traveling with your loved one during the holiday, be sure to plan for the increased confusion that being in a new place brings. Tie bells to the doorknobs of the bedroom and doors to the outside of the place you are visiting, so you’ll know if your loved one is moving about. Holiday bells in pretty colors double as “decorations,” for those with dementia deniers.
Early stage sufferers may respond to notes taped on doors, for example. “Betty, we are visiting our grandchildren at their house. Stay in our/your room until it is light outside so you do not wake the children.” Make sure to write large enough for those without glasses to read.
Especially when traveling, consider how a lost loved one can be helped. Seniors found wandering are often taken to police stations or hospitals–which are confusing at the best of times–because no one knows who they are. Consider attaching a dog tag with your dementia sufferer’s name and a phone number where you can be reached to shoes–they can be threaded on shoelaces or sewn onto slippers. Dog tags come in decorative shapes like hearts –so they don’t look like a label. GPS trackers for shoes are available at stores that sell athletic gear for runners. They are more expensive than dog tags, but will tell you exactly where to find your lost lamb–if she puts on shoes before she goes out!
Lastly, be aware of the impact that diet changes have on your loved one. Celebrating during the holidays means more sugar, fat, salt and even alcohol. In my experience, dementia patients, especially Alzheimer’s sufferers, can be profoundly impacted by food–go for frequent, small portions of fruits, veggies and proteins.

3 Fun Facts about the Wright Brothers Museum

December 17, 2023 By Guest Contributor

Step into the realm of aviation history as we embark on a captivating journey through the Wright Brothers National Museum. Home to the iconic pioneers of flight, Orville and Wilbur Wright, this museum offers a glimpse into the extraordinary lives and groundbreaking innovations that shaped the course of aviation forever. Aviation enthusiasts and history lovers alike can revel in the extraordinary tales behind the artifacts.

1. John W. Berry Wright Brothers National Museum has More Wright Artifacts on Display than any Other Place in the World

Wright Brothers Camera

Nestled within the confines of the museum lies an unparalleled treasure trove for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Interestingly enough, through all his hard work with elements like grease and oil, it was hard to find Orville Wright in disarray. Visitors can marvel at Orville Wright’s impeccably preserved tuxedo and distinctive suede Stetson shoes. This display not only showcases Orville’s commitment to sartorial elegance but also provides a glimpse into his meticulous attention to personal appearance.

Additionally, the museum showcases the artifacts of the Wright brothers’ father, Bishop Milton Wright, including his spectacles, canes, and a 1668 Holy Bible, emphasizing the familial roots of the Wright brothers’ achievements in aviation. Their mother, Susan Catherine Koerner Wright, is often credited for their mechanical prowess, which is why her hand-knit cape, tools from her father, John Gottlieb Koerner, and tintypes showcasing her parents, John and Catherine Freyer, are on display.

Skilled not only in aviation but also in photography, the Wright Brothers obtained a Korona V camera, using it to capture their iconic first flight photo. Orville set up the camera, and John T. Daniels, a member of the U.S. Life Saving Service Station, took the historic snapshot by squeezing the bulb – a moment that marked Daniels’ inaugural venture into photography. Stroll through the museum and find it as well as other fascinating artifacts illuminating the lives of the famous Daytonian Brothers.

Wright Flyer III

2. The Museum Houses the 1905 Wright Flyer III

In 1946, the vision for Carillon Historical Park, a museum celebrating the region’s influential role in transportation history, was unveiled by Dayton industrialist Edward Deeds. The Wright brothers were slated to be featured prominently, and Deeds initially proposed constructing a replica of their 1903 Wright Flyer. However, Orville suggested a different approach, advocating for the restoration and display of the 1905 Wright Flyer III, which he considered their most significant aircraft. This particular flyer, recognized as the world’s first practical airplane, had the capability to perform figure eights, land, and take off again—an achievement that distinguished it from earlier models.

Why did it need restoration? Later on in 1905, the Wright brothers disassembled the plane and placed it in storage until the spring of 1908. During this period, they modified the aircraft to accommodate two individuals—a pilot and a passenger. It was then transported to Kitty Hawk, where they conducted the inaugural passenger flight with their mechanic Charlie Furnas as the passenger. Unfortunately, Wilbur encountered a crash on the same day, leading them to disassemble parts of and abandon the aircraft at Kitty Hawk, with only the engine returning to Dayton. For three years the plane suffered from vandalism and exposure to the elements until the remaining parts were stored in a small museum in Pittsfield, MA. Orville’s reconstruction would then begin in 1947.

The 1905 Wright Flyer III has since been deemed a National Historic Landmark- the only airplane to ever be designated as so. Although Orville Wright passed away before the opening of Carillon Park in 1950, he played a role in the design of Wright Hall, where the Flyer resides.

Carillon Bikes

3. An Original Wright Bicycle is a Rare Sight to See

The first portion of the museum replicates Orville and Wilbur’s original bicycle shop. Yes, that’s correct, the brothers were involved with more than one form of transportation. In 1938, with Orville Wright’s approval, Henry Ford acquired the original Wright brothers’ bicycle shop building from 1127 W. Third Street. The historic structure was then moved to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, where it stands today. Carillon Park’s cycle shop faithfully replicates the appearance of the Wright brothers’ store during the crucial period between mid-October to mid-December 1901.

In 1896, the Wright brothers initiated the production of their own bicycle brand, starting with the Van Cleve model. Named after their paternal great-great grandmother, Catherine Benham Van Cleve Thompson, the Wrights manufactured and sold a total of 95 Van Cleve bicycles. Today, only four are known to exist, with two preserved at Carillon Historical Park, ensuring the enduring legacy of the pioneering aviators.

—

As you explore the exhibits and delve into the story of the Wright brothers, you’ll not only witness their contributions to aviation but also discover the family ties, meticulous craftsmanship, and innovative spirit that define their enduring legacy. The John W. Berry Wright Brothers National Museum stands as a testament to the indelible mark left by Orville and Wilbur Wright on the world of aviation in hope to ensure that their groundbreaking achievements continue to inspire generations to come.

Joui Wine: A New Wine Bar with Small Bites and Retail

December 16, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Visited Dayton’s newest wine bar, Joui (pronounced Joy) Wine yesterday for a liquid lunch with a friend.  Located in the Fire Blocks on Third street, it makes an impression the minute you enter. My guest declared she loved it from first look.

Owner Lauren Gay, the former general manager of Sueno, wanted to put her sommelier talents to work, curating a downtown wine bar and retail spot, something she feels has been missing since The Wine Gallery closed. When describing her new place she shares that “the atmosphere is first and foremost fun. Wine is often times pretentious and stuffy, and it doesn’t have to be. I want the space to reflect the kind of explorative, relaxed approach that I take to wine. The space is bright, and will be full of light colors, flowing shapes, plants, and art. I want it to be a comfortable place for people to bring their laptop and work, grab a light snack, or have a pre-dinner drink. I want it to be a place of comfort and pleasure.”

We were there to take advantage of their liquid lunch and started with the Airmail and the Spiced Apple Bellini.

Then to decide on a snack:

We decided to share the cheese plate:

Along the back end are racks of wine to purchase and their kitchen area.

Overall for our first visit we liked it.  We dropped about $40 on 2 drinks and our snack, pre-tip. The service was very attentive and we have no doubt others will find joy here.

Dewey’s Brings Back Fan-Favorite Yukon Cornelius Pizza

December 13, 2023 By Dayton937

Dewey’s Pizza  brought back a holiday favorite, the Yukon Cornelius pizza.  The pizza is topped with olive oil, minced garlic, mozzarella, white cheddar, seasoned Yukon Gold Potatoes, red onion and bacon. It’s finished with green onions and a drizzle of lemon-chive sour cream.

Some might recognize the pizza’s name, which is shared with the loveable Arctic prospector who befriends Rudolph in the 1964 television special, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”. The recipe itself, though, came from a company-wide Recipe Remix contest hosted by Dewey’s Pizza in 2015.

The limited-edition pizza will be available at all 24 Dewey’s locations until Jan. 10. You can find your nearest location here.

Dewey’s Pizza says the Yukon Cornelius is best fresh of of the oven. For those that want to order carryout, the pizza chain encourages customers to try Dewey’s Take & Slice version — an unsliced, fully cooked pizza that can be reheated at home.

Where to Get Dayton’s Best Carrot Cake

December 11, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

You don’t have to be a patient at Kettering Medical Center to get this famed carrot cake. People have been talking about it for  years:

“Here it is folks, the famous carrot cake making hospital stays bearable. There are no words to describe how delish this cake is!”

“Would you believe I faked a total knee replacement, in fact my second one, just to be able to eat a piece of carrot cake at one of Kettering Health’s hospitals? Beyond yummy!”

“Came here for some carrot cake and figured we might as well have a baby too.”

So we set out to find out more about this cake legend from Michael Leibold ,Executive Pastry Chef who’s run the bakery at Kettering Medical Center for over eighteen years. He was originally brought in to take the bakery more upscale after stints at The Cincinnatian Hotel and Truffles Cafe and Catering.

When he added the carrot cake to the patients menu. the demand for it just blew up. Last year they served over 60,000 slices to patients. Their bakery has 5 staff members and Leibold calls it “the biggest unknown baker in the Miami Valley.”

People from the community began ordering their carrot cakes. You can pickup a slice in the cafeteria for $4.50 or with 48 hours notice order an entire cake, which feeds 16 people for $26. To order call the main hospital number (937) 298-4331 and then ask for the bakery (extension 55121) to place your order. You’ll then pick it up from the cafeteria in the basement of the hospital on Southern Blvd in Kettering, or you can arrange to pick it up at one of their other facilities.

Chef Leibold shares that make about 42 cakes each day.  When served in the hospital they are single layers with no nuts, but when sold through the bakery they are double layered 9 inch cakes decorated with cream cheese icing and ground pecans.  Chef also suggests you check out their other treats, like pies, specialty breads, and cookies.  They will even decorate cakes.

Local Bartender Competing To Win $10,000

December 10, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Nic Meade, a bartender at Fifth Street Brewpub has been chosen to participate in the Bar Boss competition! It’s a search for the bartender with the biggest personality, most loyal customer base, and of course — who makes the best drink. Bartender Magazine will hand-select one “Master Mixologist” to be featured based on a custom recipe and photo presentation. One bartender will be chosen by the public to win $10k and be featured on the cover of Bartender Magazine as the 2023 Bar Boss. And Nic needs your vote to win this competition- he’s currently in 7th place. Your first vote online each day is free.

What is your favorite thing about being a bartender? The people. Working a local neighborhood bar, I get to see a lot of the same faces every week. Build relationships with those people, and build community.

If you could have only 3 ingredients at your bar, what would they be?Mezcal, grapefruit juice, absinthe rinse.

What would you do with the $10,000?Honestly, treat myself. Take a week off, have a really nice stay-cation. Also, I’d get my car fixed, as it’s been an on going issue l o l.

Tamarind Is McCormick’s 2024 Flavor Of The Year

December 8, 2023 By Guest Contributor

McCormick today announced the Flavor Forecast 24th Edition, the brand’s annual report highlighting the latest culinary trends shaping the way people prepare and enjoy food worldwide.

As part of this year’s report, McCormick announces its 2024 Flavor of the Year: Tamarind. Fans can experience the notable flavor it in action with the new Tamarind & Pasilla Chile Seasoning, available to purchase online now. The Flavor of the Year will also be featured in several limited-edition, Tamarind-infused menu items at Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer – the globally acclaimed burger joint – locations nationwide starting in February 2024.

A spice native to Africa, India, and the Middle East, Tamarind has lent its acidic, tangy-sweet flavor to Latin, Caribbean, and Mexican cuisines for centuries. Other flavor predictions and trends identified in the brand’s Flavor Forecast 24th Edition include:

Sour Power: From tamarind to coconut vinegar, acidic agents are stepping into the spotlight to open our senses, boost craveability, and even help “cook” without heat. Sour is proving it’s not “just another ingredient;” it’s revolutionizing menus, delivering layer on layer of exciting flavor.

Bowl of tamarind pods

Bowl of tamarind pods – New Africa/Shutterstock

Thoughtfully Borrowed: Authenticity encompasses background, heritage, and experiences – with it comes a reinvention of regional-traditional cooking. Starting with a dash of something that’s “you”, these conscious cultural combinations pay homage and respect to both roots and backgrounds – creating a celebration of flavor, experience, and cuisine.

Indulgence Redefined: A source of pleasure, ritual, and community, indulgence comes in all shapes and forms. From time of day to season, flavor sensations link to emotions, memories, and all lived experiences. From a crisp, light ceviche to an over-the-top breakfast poutine, it’s about how we treat ourselves through flavor, texture, and ingredients that make us happy. Two ways this trend comes to life are through newstalgic and food maximalism. Newstaglic: What’s old is new again, with restaurants re-introducing childhood favorites with a gourmet twist. Food maximalism: By layering flavors and textures in creative, fun, and always thoughtful ways, you can experience flavor to the max.

Ohio Recreational Marijuana Use Law Now In Effect

December 7, 2023 By Dayton937

Starting today, it is legal for people to use marijuana but there is nowhere to buy it legally. Ohio’s recreational marijuana law permits those ages 21 and up to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis in most forms and grow plants at home.

However state lawmakers are already trying to change the law, trying to speed up the sales timeline by temporarily allowing recreational purchases at existing medical marijuana dispensaries, while also trying to raise the sales tax from 10% in the law to 15%. They also want to shift the revenue proceeds to benefit county jails, police training, addiction treatment and a legal aid service to expunge marijuana-related offenses.

The bill would also restrict marijuana advertising toward children, banning marijuana use in public and vehicles, limiting it to private residences, allowing landlords to ban it, allowing employers to have drug free workplace policies that could result in termination if violated and limiting the number of dispensaries to 230, down from 350. lower THC content for extracts and limit home grow to six plants per household, down from 12.

The Ohio Senate on Wednesday reached a bipartisan compromise, which has the governor’s vocal support, but the House of Representatives adjourned for the week without considering the bill.

More to come, but in the meantime, enjoy the high!

Wingdalorian: Crafting a Wing Revolution in the Heart of Northmont

December 6, 2023 By Dayton937

The Wingdalorian emerged from a shared craving — a craving for wings that go beyond the ordinary. Founded out of the sheer necessity for a dry-rubbed, oven-roasted wing haven, Wingdalorian takes wing craftsmanship seriously. No tricks, no games, just a commitment to crafting the perfect wing.

According to owner Isiah Davis  Wingdalorian’s  mission is to “fill the void in Northmont’s wing scene, offering not just wings but a wholesome experience. Committed to continuous improvement, he vows never to settle, always striving to elevate the wing game.”

His vision “extends beyond the crispy exterior of our wings. We aim to be more than a wing joint, creating an atmosphere where great wings meet community connections. Northmont, chosen with care, becomes the canvas for our flavor saga.

In the world of Wingdalorian, wings aren’t just a dish; they’re an experience, a commitment to excellence, and a journey to savor. Join us in making Northmont the destination for wing aficionados. Wings are the way, and we’re here to lead the flight- Wingdalorian.”

Wingdalorian takes flight as one of the concepts under the new restaurant group, Chef Zay’s Culinary Collective. A collective committed to culinary innovation, where Wingdalorian stands as a testament to excellence and a unique wing experience.

He shares “Community is at our core. We stand beside fellow small businesses, currently collaborating with Full Circle Brewgarden for “Wingdalorian Wednesdays.” Every Wednesday, savor the revolution with Buy 5 Wings and get 50% off 5 more, a local favorite.”

Wingdalorian shares kitchen space with The Cookieologist and Slide Thru. Our neighbors include Jd’s Custard and Full Circle Brewgarden, creating a culinary hub in the heart of Northmont.

Wiley Awarded ORA Lifetime Achievement Award

December 4, 2023 By Dayton937

The 2023 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 goes to Chef Elizabeth Wiley of Meadowlark Restaurant and Wheat Penny Oven and Bar in Dayton, Ohio.
Wiley, as her friends call her, has created a legacy throughout the Dayton area and beyond. Her career began at the iconic The Winds Café in Yellow Springs.
As she tells it: “I had various cooking jobs while in college, and not long after graduation, I visited Yellow Springs. My last night in town, I was taken to The Winds Café. When brought in to see the kitchen during dinner service, I couldn’t believe my eyes—a bunch of women cooking, in chef coats! I had never seen a woman in a chef coat before. I immediately asked if I could work there. Skeptically, (who is this over-excited girl?) they said yes.”
After spending a couple of years at The Winds, Wiley hopped a bus for San Francisco where she learned the “California Cuisine” of the early 80’s. From there, her career took her to Key West and Chicago but Yellow Springs held a special place in her heart.
She returned to become a partner at The Winds in 1994 and worked alongside a core group of women, all self-taught and immensely talented.
“Like dedicated chefs everywhere, we worked our asses off. We constantly read and worked on our cooking, at work and at home. We’d use each other as guinea pigs. Oh, the dinner parties!”
In 2004, she ventured out on her own to open Meadowlark and 9 years later, Wheat Penny with her best friend Liz Valenti (check out the pictures of them then and now). After a legendary career, Chef Wiley retired ten months ago and sold the restaurants to her wonderful business partners Dave & Liz.
Join us in congratulating Chef Wiley, she is so deserving of this award. Cheers to you, Wiley! We can’t wait to celebrate you at the Industry Awards.
