Taco Bell is Giving Away Free Tacos on “Taco Tuesday”

August 14, 2023 By Dayton937

Taco Bell is ready to celebrate Taco John’s decision last month to drop its “Taco Tuesday” trademark ownership – with free tacos, of course. It took less than two months (and perhaps one conversation about the cost of this particular legal battle) for Taco John’s to surrender its trademark, giving Taco Tuesday back to the people. And, to celebrate this truly landmark victory, Taco Bell is now giving away free Doritos Locos Tacos

Taco Bell is now giving away free Doritos Locos Tacos for the next four Tuesdays:

August 15
August 22
August 29
September 5

The offer is good at participating Taco Bell locations and on delivery orders in the Taco Bell app. There is no purchase necessary. The offer is limited to one taco per person per day, while supplies last.

“This Free-For-All will not only thank taco fans who supported the cause, but will also spotlight local restaurants and vendors who can now embrace Taco Tuesdays without fear of legal action,” Taylor Montgomery, the Chief Marketing Officer for Taco Bell U.S., said in a statement. “When tacos win, we all win. We all win when Taco John’s decides to release its trademark registration, we all win when taco vendors everywhere are free to join the movement, and we all win when taco fans can freely celebrate and support Taco Tuesdays at Taco Bell or anywhere else.”

When Taco John’s gave up its “Taco Tuesday” trademark, it also pledged a $40,000 donation — $100 for each of its 400 locations — to the nonprofit organization Children of Restaurant Employees (CORE) which provides financial relief to food and beverage industry workers who are facing health crises or other challenges. The Taco Bell Foundation has since matched that donation.

National Aviation Day Balloon Glow

August 14, 2023 By Dayton937

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park invites you to celebrate National Aviation Day on Saturday, August 19, 2023, with a hot air balloon glow at sunset! This special event will begin at Huffman Prairie Flying Field starting at 6:30 pm, with the glow happening from dusk until 9:30 pm. Rangers from the National Park will take guests on guided tours to share the story of early flight at the prairie. There will be booths set up with activities and information on park sites and junior ranger programs – fun for the whole family. As dusk approaches, balloonists Al Nels, Andrew Nels, and Mark Frazier will light up the prairie with the glow of their three hot air balloons. Kids of all ages can get up close to the balloons and learn about how they fly and how to become a balloon pilot.

National Aviation Day, a yearly celebration of aviation achievements in the US, was first declared on the birthday of Orville Wright in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It has been celebrated around the country with parades and airshows. Our event will be held on Wright-Patterson Air Force base at Huffman Prairie Flying Field, the 84-acre prairie where Orville and Wilbur Wright developed a fully controllable flying machine, trained themselves to be pilots and opened a flight school.

This free, family-friendly event will be held on Saturday, August 19th from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the prairie located at Gate 16A on State Route 444; entrance is at Twin Base Golf Club. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, snacks or a picnic, and beverages in plastic or aluminum containers. The event is being held at a vibrant and active prairie, so please wear outdoor clothes, and bring sunblock, plenty of water, and insect repellent. Please do not bring alcohol, firearms, weapons of any kind, glass containers, pets, or tents. Forecasts are currently showing favorable weather on 8/19, but this event is weather dependent and could be cancelled if inclement weather occurs.

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park preserves and interprets the history and legacies of the Wright Brothers and Paul Laurence Dunbar. Learn more about these extraordinary men and the story of the park when you explore www.nps.gov/daav or find us on social media at facebook.com/DaytonAviationNPS, and @DaytonAviationNHP on Instagram.

Downtown Dayton Partnership Names New President

August 14, 2023 By Dayton937

The Downtown Dayton Partnership has announced that the executive search committee has selected the organization’s next president. Katie Meyer will succeed Sandy Gudorf and lead the DDP as it works to continue the positive momentum downtown.

Katie has spent her career developing solutions to social and economic needs in cities. Since 2019, she has served as the policy and program manager for UniCity, altafiber’s smart city division based out of Dayton. In this role, she has worked with municipalities and organizations on technology solutions, policy, strategy, implementation, and data analysis.

Prior to joining altafiber, she served for nine years as the executive director of Renaissance Covington, where she promoted the economic revitalization of Covington, Kentucky’s historic downtown through business attraction, cultural vibrancy, and creative placemaking. Under her leadership, more than $150 million was invested in property rehabilitation, 20+ businesses opened each year, and Covington’s downtown housing inventory skyrocketed.

Katie earned her M.S. in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School in New York City. She also holds a B.A. in Political Science and Journalism from the University of Kentucky. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her work and her volunteer efforts, and she serves on and leads a wide variety of community initiatives and boards.

Katie is thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the Downtown Dayton Partnership during such an exciting time for our city. She comments: “I already have a deep love and appreciation for the Dayton community and look forward to building on the organization’s momentum towards social and economic vibrancy alongside the staff and many dedicated stakeholders.”

The selection of Katie Meyer is the result of an extensive national and local search for the next DDP president, overseen by a search committee of the DDP Board of Trustees with input from community leaders, partners, and DDP staff. The search committee and the people she met with during the interview process loved Katie’s experience, energy, connections to the region, and commitment to the urban experience. The committee reviewed an extensive pool of strong candidates, and believes that Katie brings the right combination of skills and knowledge to work with the staff and volunteers to accelerate downtown Dayton’s progress.

Katie is expected to join the DDP on September 5.

Frequent Flyer? Get your TSA PreCheck!

August 11, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

TSA PreCheck is an expedited screening program that makes risk assessments about passengers prior to their arrival at an airport checkpoint. In general, security screenings ahead of most domestic and select international flights for PreCheck members are often streamlined and more convenient. That’s partly because members do not have to remove belts, shoes or lightweight jackets at TSA security screenings. Also, large electronics like laptops and tablets can stay in their cases or carry-on bags.

In March 2023, 89% of TSA PreCheck passengers waited less than five minutes at airport security. Simply add your Known Traveler Number to your flight reservations to receive a “TSA PreCheck” designation on your boarding pass and use the dedicated security lines.

Children up to 12 years old do not need their own TSA PreCheck membership. As long as they are traveling with an adult who is a member, they can use the TSA Security lanes too. Children ages 13-17 can travel with TSA PreCheck member parents so long as the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the child’s boarding pass as well.

Any person looking to apply for TSA PreCheck needs to click on the link below to fill out the application. On the last page of the application there will be an option to schedule an appointment. Choose the  Downtown Dayton Auto Title Branch at 451 W Third St., Dayton, OH 45422 or IdentoGO at 1487 W Main St in Tipp City, OH 45371-2803

LINK TO APPLICATION

It takes five minutes to submit an online application and schedule an in-person appointment that includes a background check and fingerprinting at an enrollment center.

The application fee for TSA PreCheck is $78 for 5 years and they do not accept cash or checks. Most applicants will receive their KTN (Known Traveler Number) in 3-5 days, through some applications can take up to 60 days.

How to get TSA PreCheck for free

While you can pay for TSA PreCheck with your credit card or debit card, you can actually get it for free instead of paying cash. Here are three ways to do just that:

  • Military benefits. All active members of the U.S. Armed Forces can receive TSA PreCheck benefits by entering their Department of Defense identification number as their Known Traveler Number. This includes those serving as Reserves and National Guard, as well as cadets and midshipmen attending a military academy.

  • Credit card benefits. Many travel cards reimburse TSA PreCheck application fees every four to five years. Example cards include the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express and the IHG® One Rewards Premier Credit Card. Terms apply.

  • Redeem rewards. Some airline and hotel loyalty programs, such as Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus, allow you to redeem miles and points to pay for TSA PreCheck application fees.

Pumpkin Creep is Happening

August 10, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

What is “pumpkin creep”? The term “pumpkin creep” refers to the fact that pumpkin spice stuff seems to appear earlier and earlier every year, despite the fact that the actual autumn itself has always begun in late September and runs through late December. During the pandemic in 2020, we saw pumpkin spice products nudge upward in the calendar since everyone was bummed about missing out on their summer plans. Since everyone was stuck inside anyway, the theory went, they might as well start feeling the cozy fall vibes.

It’s a marketing strategy that seems to have grown legs. That’s why we’re talking about cozy autumn brews in the middle of July. Autumn beers debuting in August 2023

Two major beer brands, Samuel Adams and Dogfish Head, are ushering in this early fall season. On August 1, Dogfish Head is dropping its annual release of Punkin Ale, which has the distinction of using actual pumpkin flesh along with pumpkin spice and a touch of brown sugar.

2023’s Pumpkin Beers Are Already Starting to Drop:

Samuel Adams Jack-O pumpkin ale is brewed with the intention of creating a flavor profile light and crisp enough to enjoy during those warmer days while transitioning into fall. It blends classic spiced flavors like pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg, along with subtle notes of fresh citrus to keep it balanced and refreshing. Sam Adams didn’t stop there, though. In addition to this more versatile ale, the brewery also released its signature OctoberFest beer this week as well as a Beer Fest variety pack, which includes the seasonal Flannel Fest Munich Dunkel.

Also making an early appearance is the Dogfish Head Punkin Ale, now offered in cans for the first time with a new packaging design. This full-bodied brown ale is undeniably autumnal — brewed with real pumpkin meat, brown sugar, and fall spices — so it might be a little more difficult to integrate into the cooler during the summer heat.

Trick or Treat Chocolate Pumpkin Porter

This beer is haunted!  Its a dark roasty porter with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and chocolate, and it tastes amazing, but don’t drink it! Its Haunted!

Young’s Jersey Dairy  has  declared it’s pumpkin season

They’ve announced that  Homemade Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Bread and our Pumpkin Bumpkin Shake are now available in the Dairy Store:

What Dunkin’ has in Store:

According to a rumored press release shared by food blogger Markie Devo on Instagram, pumpkin spice will be at Dunkin’  Wednesday, August 16!

The social media user always shares leaked food secrets and is usually spot on with his dates – so it looks like you haven’t got long to wait.

The date you need to put in your calendar is Thursday, August 24 because that’s when the fall menu is rumored to begin at Starbucks in 2023.

We’re Getting a Buc-ee’s In Huber Heights!

August 10, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

We saw the sign a while ago, but wondered if it was a joke. But Huber Heights Mayor Jeff Gore confirmed, the new Buc-ee’s location will sit at the intersection of OH-235 and I-70 in the northeast corner on the Montgomery County/Clark County Line.  The Texas based Buc-ee’s has a cult following with locations in Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, Colorado and Tennessee. For those of you who don’t know, Buc-ee’s is a most visit super gas station with a cult following. Athe closest Buc-ee’s to the Miami Valley is located off I-75 in Richmond, Kentucky.  We can’t wait for Buc-ee’s to open!

Buc-ee’s is:

  • A massive gas station with literally dozens of gas pumps
  • A rest stop that has the cleanest restrooms in the US
  • A convenience store where you can purchase snacks & drinks, along with hot foods
  • A gift shop that sells everything from kitchen serving platters to hunting knives to pet accessories

Buc-ees is also know for their snacks. Arguably the most famous snack available at Buc-ee’s is beaver nuggets. There are traditional beaver nuggets, salted caramel beaver nuggets, and savory beaver nuggets, as well. Go for the OG traditional beaver nuggets. They are basically caramel coated corn puffs (similar to Cracker Jack, but better).

Available sandwiches include chopped brisket, chopped brisket with onions and pickles, the signature Club (ham, smoked turkey, cheddar, peppered bacon, and sundried tomato pesto sauce), and a sliced brisket sandwich.

Buc-ee’s sells much more than just junk food! If you want fresh fruit or veggies, Buc-ee’s has tons of super convenient options. All their foods are pre-cut and packaged for easy eating so you won’t have to worry about making a mess in your car. Fresh salads are available, too.

Beef jerky is another must get at Buc-ee’s, with a ton of different kinds of fancy jerky available for purchase. Literally a wall AND a display of jerky. This isn’t some Jack Link jerky you can get at any old grocery store – this stuff is freshly made with tons of really unique but delicious flavors available.

Buc-ee’s literally has anything you could want, including delectable fudge! There are about a dozen different flavors available, including low sugar and less chocolatey varietals. There’s a little bit of everything, from chocolate praline to blueberry cheesecake and more.

And Buc-ee’s is a great place to shop for gifts, for you, your pets, friends and family.

$60K in Artist Opportunity Grants Available

August 7, 2023 By Dayton937

The Artist Opportunity Grant program is back in 2023 with $60,000 available to foster the professional growth of local artists.

Montgomery County artists can use Artist Opportunity Grants to create new works and pursue imminent opportunities for professional development, such as residences, apprenticeships, and skill-building workshops. Since 2016, the program has awarded more than $220,000 to 77 artists to complete career-advancing projects. This year’s grants will support projects happening between January 1 and December 31, 2024.

The Artist Opportunity Grant program is funded by the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District (MCACD) and administered by Culture Works, the Dayton Region’s local art agency and united arts fund. In this cycle, the maximum grant amount has increased from $3,000 to $5,000 and there is greater flexibility in how funds can be used. Artists applying for funding to create new works will now be able to use up to 20% of awarded funds to offset the cost of their time.

It is important for the community to support artists according to Matt Dunn, MCACD Executive Director. “As an economic sector, the arts contribute to our quality of life and our economy,” Dunn said. “Yet, at the same time, artists and many creative professionals struggle to cover their expenses.”

To support applicants, Culture Works will host a virtual information session on August 15th, project ideation sessions on August 22nd and 24th, and grant writing workshops during the application period. Additionally, applicants will have the opportunity to request a free consultation to gain feedback on their applications before submitting.

Lisa Hanson, Culture Works Executive Director

“Empowering local artists to grow and express themselves through their art benefits the community as a whole,” said Lisa Hanson, President & CEO of Culture Works. “The continued support of Montgomery County and their commitment to artist development inspires Dayton Region artists to evolve in their artistic practice and, in turn, enrich our lives.”

Artists can apply through the Culture Works website, cultureworks.org, beginning August 7th. The deadline to apply is October 6th. In November, an independent panel of artists, arts administrators, and other knowledgeable community members will review applications and make funding recommendations at a virtual public meeting.

For full program guidelines, key dates, and more about the Artist Opportunity Grant program, visit cultureworks.org.
