Sept 18th The Foundry will Donate 20% of Sales to Lahaina Fires Chef Collective

September 1, 2023 By Dayton937

In response to the devastating wildfires burning across Hawaii’s island of Maui, American rooftop restaurant The Foundry, located atop AC Hotel Dayton in the Water Street District, is partnering with Hawaii-based Lahaina Fires Chef Collective to help feed vulnerable Maui communities. The Foundry encourages the Dayton community to stand in solidarity with Maui and will be donating 20% of all dinner service proceeds on Monday, September 18 to the cause.

The Foundry is honored to be working with Maui-based Chef Jason Raffin who is a member of Chef Collective, an organization composed of chefs who use their culinary skills and food service connections to feed communities in need. Despite also losing his home and belongings in the wildfires, Chef Raffin is eager to help others who have been displaced, are unemployed, grieving or otherwise in need of support because of the fires.

Lahaina Fires Chef Collective

“We’re inspired by Chef Raffin’s work in Lahaina and we want the Dayton community to be a part of this cause,” said Ian Legors, General Manager at AC Hotel Dayton. “Every meal enjoyed at The Foundry on September 18 will help raise donations to feed and bring hope to those in Maui.”

Focusing efforts on the heavily impacted West Maui, especially Lahaina, Chef Collective is helping Chef Raffin coordinate with local Hua Momona Farms, a non-profit 501c3 foundation, to feed quality food to the impacted community with an emphasis on farm ingredients, micronutrients and long-term solutions to food insecurity.

“We have been making huge strides in fighting the food insecurity problems in Lahaina currently,” said Chef Raffin. “We are focused on creating excellent food rather than mass produced substances.”

Recently, Chef Raffin and the teams at Lahaina Fires Chef Collective and Hua Momona Farms  partnered with Hungry Heroes Hawaii to provide steak plates to first responders.

As donation and distribution efforts from other organizations slow in Maui, Lahaina Fires Chef Collective and Hua Momona Farms aim to absorb these efforts and increase their output from serving 400 farm-fresh meals per day to 1,000 meals per day. To make this goal a reality, donations from The Foundry will help Chef Raffin and the team acquire a refrigerated truck, invest in two additional storage spaces and find more farm and kitchen help.

Dayton residents and visitors are invited to share in The Foundry’s cuisines on Monday, September 18 to support the cause. A meal at The Foundry will ensure someone has a meal tomorrow in Maui. On Mondays, The Foundry is open from 4 PM – 11 PM (kitchen closes at 10 PM). Reservations can be made via OpenTable.

McAlister’s Deli Opens in Washington Township

August 31, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

“This location has been a long time coming. We have been hard at work making it a great place for the folks of Centerville in every way we can,” said Owner and Operator, Jacob Mulvey. “I cannot wait to open the doors and look forward to serving ya’ll soon!”

Jacob Mulvey, Owner/Operator

Getting this location built has been a challenge. Construction started over 2 years ago and they took the building down to the studs.  At one time there was a cinema at the site, so they had to deal with leveling the floors and then major HVAC regulations changes which made for major supply chain issues waiting for the manufacturers to catch up.
So they basically now have a brand new building and will open the doors Friday, Sept 1st at 10am. To celebrate the grand opening, the location will be giving the first 50 guests in line a free 30-day tea pass. This entitles winners to one free tea per day for 30 consecutive days
This fast casual restaurant chain is home to handcrafted sandwiches, always-fresh salads, giant stuffed spuds, and McAlister’s Deli Famous Sweet Tea.   McAlister’s offers a variety of ways for guests to dine, including dine-in, delivery, windowside pickup for orders placed online, outdoor seating and catering.
The menu offers a huge variety of choices, you can check out the menu here. My favorite being the Choose 2, which allow you to create your own combo that include  a 1/2 sandiwch, 1/2 salad, half spud, cup of soup or nachos. They offer cookies, brownies, cheesecake and carrot cake for dessert.

McAlister’s guests always have the opportunity to skip the line by placing their order through the McAlister’s app and rewards program or online at www.mcalistersdeli.com and can conveniently pick up their order at the window from your car or select delivery. If you download the app and sign up today you’ll get  a free tea!

McAlister’s also offers a variety of fresh, made-to-order catering options including breakfast, snacks, spud bars, salads, sandwich trays, box lunches and desserts.  For their boxed lunches you can select from 18 sandwiches, 4 sides and 4 desserts.  When you place an order, they’ll event put the name on the boxes to make distribution easy.  Whether it’s for two, two hundred or event two thousand, a business meeting or a family reunion, they can cater a feast to please any crowd.

Underground Railroad Bicycle Route – Great Miami Riverway Alternate

August 31, 2023 By GreatMiamiRiverway

The U.S. Bicycling Route System includes the 51.4 mile long Great Miami Riverway Alternate Route, which provides travelers with the opportunity to experience the rich history of Warren, Montgomery, and Greene Counties by traveling through quaint communities and along the urban riverfront of Dayton.  Part of this alternate route connects the river towns and amenities of the Great Miami Riverway.

The U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) is a developing national network of bicycle routes connecting urban and rural communities via signed roads and trails. Created with public input, U.S. Bicycle Routes direct bicyclists to a preferred route through a city, county, or state – creating opportunities for people everywhere to bicycle for travel, transportation, and recreation. Nearly 18,000 miles are currently established.

You’ll discover hidden nuggets of fascinating facts around every bend.  The Alternate Route stretches from Corwin and Waynesville through Springboro on road before transitioning to off-street paved trails for the remainder of the route through Miamisburg, Dayton, and on to Xenia.

Information from https://www.metroparks.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/UGRR-GMR-Alt.pdf

Route Overview

The Great Miami Riverway Alternate (GMRA) provides travelers the opportunity to experience the rich history of Warren, Montgomery, and Greene Counties by traveling through quaint communities and along the urban riverfront of Dayton, an Outside Magazine Best Town. You’ll discover hidden nuggets of fascinating facts around every bend. You’ll travel from Corwin and Waynesville through Springboro on road before transitioning to off-street paved trails for the remainder of the route through Miamisburg, Dayton and on to Xenia. Miamisburg is also proud to be the Sister City to Owen Sound, Ontario; the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route (UGRR).

The GMRA will lead you over rolling hills and through river valleys while traveling predominantly on dedicated paved trails. The Miami Valley is the home of the Nation’s Largest Paved Trail Network where you can experience over 340 miles of connected trails (miamivalleytrails.org). Dayton is among several bicycle friendly communities and is steeped in tradition with a solid outdoor recreation scene including paddling hot spots such as the RiverScape River Run and the Mad River which are both along the route tucked among several of Five Rivers MetroParks and other public land.

This growing scene has earned Dayton the title of “The Outdoor Adventure Capital of the Midwest!”. Check it out at outdoordayton.com, more on the Great Miami Riverway at greatmiamiriverway.com.
While long distance cyclists on the UGRR have a 51 mile alternate route to experience the rich history along the GMRA; local cyclists can experience a weekend tour by choosing to loop back to their starting point using the Little Miami Scenic Trail to create a 65 mile mini-tour with B&B and camping opportunities at several places along the route.

In addition to the UGRR and GMRA, the region is at the crossroads of several long distance cycling options including the Ohio to Erie Trail and Adventure Cycling’s Chicago to New York City (CNYC) route along with U.S. Bicycle Route 50 and 25.

The Waterways Leading to Freedom

The Great Miami River and the Miami Erie Canal transported goods supporting the farming, mining, and other industries developing in Southwest Ohio in the 19th century but it also carried more than supplies and traveling passengers on their way to see family and friends; it is believed vessels traveling these routes also carried slaves traveling to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Both the Great Miami River and remnant of the Miami Erie Canal lead into Dayton, Ohio; a town known for many inventions including the first plane, the first cash register, and the soda can pop tab, as well as some local history tied to the Underground Railroad. One such runaway slave that may have used the Underground Railroad to reach Dayton is Paul Laurence Dunbar’s father, who also served in the famous Massachusetts’s 55th Infantry during the Civil War. The emancipation of slaves after the Civil War paved the way for Dunbar to become the first nationally-recognized African American Poet. During his short lifetime, Dunbar would write poems for esteemed magazines like The New York Times and Harper’s Weekly, as well as publish twelve books of poetry, four novels, four books of short stories, and lyrics to popular songs. The house he bought for his mother still stands and is part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.

The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park also is home to the Wright Cycle Company Building, Hoover Block, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, the 1905 Wright Flyer III, and Hawthorn Hill. The Wright Cycle Company Building is the only building remaining of the Wright Brothers prior bicycle shop business before they invented the airplane. Hoover Block showcases the Wright & Wright, Job Printers location that published the Dayton Tattler, which was written in Dunbar’s early days as a writer specifically for the African American population in Dayton.

The first plane to fly, the 1905 Wright Flyer III, is located at Carillon Historical Park. It is the only plane to be recognized as a National Historical Landmark. Carillon Historical Park gets its name from the Carillon tower in the middle of the park, which has a set of bells hanging in the top of the tower and played much like a piano roll. Carillon Park is also home to Dayton History and preserves over three million artifacts and thirty historic landmarks.

One such of these landmarks is the Old Courthouse in downtown Dayton. Seven US presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, campaigned here during their bids for presidency. Another place of interest is the oldest building still standing in downtown Dayton (120 N. Clair St.). This building survived the Great 1913 Flood and still stands where it was originally built. There is a placard on the side of the building to indicate where the water crested during the Great Flood. Before the flood though, Samuel Brady, the homeowner during the Civil War, used his home to assist slaves escaping slavery from the South via the Underground Railroad. You can see the stark difference in architecture between homes built in the 1800s to the stylized condos next to the building now.

Another abolitionist that lived in the area was John Harries, an Englishman Brewery owner in downtown Dayton, was also an abolitionist and helped many escaped slaves using the Underground Railroad. Although his building does not exist anymore, his grave can be found at the Woodland Cemetery. Additionally, Marcus Junius Parrott is buried in the Woodland Cemetery. Parrott served in the Ohio State House of Representatives as an abolitionist and he was instrumental in making sure Kansas achieved statehood as a slave-free state just as the Civil War was beginning in 1861.

Between an Ocean and a Glacier: The Geology of the Miami Valley

As you connect to the Great Miami River Trail via the Great-Little Trail, you’ll see that the Miami Valley has many flat landscapes, but it also has rolling hills and steep valleys. The landscape that you will climb and descend was created by two different geologic time periods in Ohio’s history.

The bedrock for most of the land between Dayton and Cincinnati was formed during the Ordovician period, 505-408 million years ago, one of the warmest time periods in Earth’s history. During this time, the Miami Valley was more like a tropical sea you’d find somewhere in the Caribbean. Large hurricanes regularly swept the region, causing the sediment stirred up from the storm to settle to the bottom and capped by a layer of mud. This happened numerous times as the continent slowly drifted northward to its current location, creating over nine hundred feet of coarse, fossiliferous limestone and shale. The largest exposed Ordovician rock layer in the world is located in the Miami Valley. After the Ordovician, a big section of what is now the Midwest was uplifted, creating what is called the Cincinnati Arch. This uplifted land was subject to the forces of erosion, and over time the raised area was washed away. This resulted in much older rock being found at the surface, and a complete absence of the younger rock layers.

As the Earth entered the Ice Age about two and a half million years ago, great continental glaciers formed and spread over the region. There have been at least four continental glaciers that have covered the Miami Valley and retreated back to Canada. As the glaciers retreated they left behind piles of gravel and sand creating the hills you are biking through today. Their torrents of melting water also created gorges and filled in ancient river valleys with sand and gravel.

The Great Miami River, named after the Miami Native American Tribe that used to live in the area, winds southward to connect to the Ohio River and is a major asset for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, both in the water and on the trail you are biking on. After an incredibly harsh, cold winter in 1913 a major storm hit the Miami Valley and caused the Great Flood of 1913. As you stand at the Inventors Walk in Riverscape MetroPark in downtown Dayton, you can look across Monument Ave. to a building where a blue wave is painted, symbolic of where the water levels reached in Dayton during the flood. In the aftermath of the flood, the Miami Conservancy District was created and five earthen dams and a levee system were built around the region to prevent another catastrophic flood.

Paleo Lab Now Open at Boonshoft Museum

August 30, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s been four years in the making, Ray Vodden- the Boonshoft’s Palentologist tells us, but now the Paleo Lab is now open.  Located inside the Eco Eatery, the lab includes fossil specimens, a dig pit, large foam dino puzzles, and the opportunity to see our paleontology crew work on articulating and constructing our hadrosaur skeleton!
Ray leads a team of volunteers that are working on restoring a hadrosaur, lovingly called TC, after Tim Clelland, the property owner where the skeleton was found in Butte County South Dakota. It was excavated in 2001, purchased at auction by Dayton resident Peter Thaler for  $100,000, then donated to the Dayton Society of Natural History.
Ray says they have 209 bones of the 275 the “duck-billed” dinosaur had. They use a Sandblasters to help clean the bone and remove the rocks formed around them. Many of the smaller bones disappeared in the blow out of the levies where the skeleton was found.  His team is working using foam and car bondo to recreate the missing bones. He is currently working on an upper leg bone that he thinks will take him about 3 weeks to finish. Ray estimates it will take about 4 years to recreate the bones and attach to a support system that will eventually move TC into an interactive display.
In the cases there are Mosasaur heads, an extinct, large marine reptile who breathed air, were powerful swimmers, and were well-adapted to living in the warm, shallow inland seas prevalent during the Late Cretaceous period, over 66 million years ago and casts of footprints from other dinosaurs of that period.
Kids will love the hands on dig pit where they can search for bone recreations and also build foam dinosaurs from the many “bones” they’ll find.

A New Place To “Gather” in the Dayton Arcade

August 30, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

It’s been a long time coming, between COVID, supply chain issues and more, but GATHER by Ghostlight will officially host a ribbon cutting at 11am Thursday, August 31. Described on their website as “A gathering place that offers craft coffee, fast casual breakfast & lunch, as well as sharable small plates, wine, beer, and cocktails in the evening, with local art, live music and events.”  Mike Elsass Studio here for a meet and greet and  a Jazz ensemble staring at 8pm. They’ll be open until 10pm Thursday celebrating.

Owner Shane Anderson is creating a caffeine inspired empire here in the Miami Valley. The original Ghostlight Coffee opened on Wayne Avenue in 2011.  He then added a second shop, Ghostlight Midtown on Patterson in 2019.  In 2021 Ghostlight Centerville Coffee Bar & Bagel Shop opened inside Dot’s Market. May of 2022 brought on Dough, located in the 2nd Street Market. In June of 2023  he opened a new production facility in the former space of Belmont Bakery. The vision he had for Gather
was a more upscale spot that could infuse the culture, history, and flavors of coffee and the traditions of European apéro into its Arcade location.  He  had the vision he wanted to develop and he brought in some heavy hitters to consult with him to make it happen.

Evan Danielson, who many may remember from when he worked at the original Ghostlight coffee shop on Wayne Avenue a dozen or so years ago, then moved to Nashville, became a sommelier and now works in the wholesale beverage industry has bee tasked with creating the beverage program for Gather. The restaurant will feature a selection of both regular and zero-proof beer, wines and spirits, with an added focus on aperitifs, spritzes and digestifs.  The wine menu will be mostly European wines which Evan says are more food friendly, with 8-10 whites and reds by the bottle, a few sparkling and roses as well as wines by the glass and will change often. Look forward to tasting experiences to come in the attached  Dana L. Wiley Gallery space.

To help set the food menu, Shane hired Chef Jenn DiSanto, who ran her own Fresco catering business, cooking for many high end events in the community. “After the last few years, we’re all still learning how to Gather and I look forward to us setting the standard for how we can do that,” shared DiSanto.

Following Shane’s vision for European flair, she’s including trends she spotted on a recent family vacation to Europe.  She, along with kitchen manager Chris Coherd have worked to bring forth a menu that will be inspired by seasonal product availability. They’ve pulled together a talented kitchen crew, with 2 CIA graduates, a current Sinclair Culinary student and a couple of Ghostlight veterans.

I got to try the Mojo Braised Pork sandwich when I visited and I was totally impressed with the flavors that melded together to make this a must-try sandwich.

A peek at the opening menu, which is a work still in progress:

Additionally, Gather by Ghostlight will welcome   – featuring Mike Elsass in the 39 W. Fourth Street portion of the space. Guests will enjoy the works of Elsass and other featured artists in addition to private events, programmed talks, and live music amongst the curated art.

When I visited yesterday the bar staff were setting up, opening boxes of glassware and looking forward to mixing drinks and introducing the Apero hours to Dayton.

So excited for this exciting new concept to open!

August 30, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

As many may have heard, Steve Crandall, owner of the local restaurant, Flyboys Deli, recently endured a life-altering stroke.  His left side of his body is unresponsive and he recently has been moved to a nursing home.  His wife Eunice is simultaneously recovering from cancer and a broken leg. Wheat Penny Celebrates 10th Anniversary!

August 26, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

It was just over ten years ago that we wrote about “a new cool pizza-centric restaurant  featuring rustic, creative dishes and a bar that serves up fresh, handmade cocktails-brought to you by the culinary-minded folks at Meadowlark Restaurant!”
From the beginning Wheat Penny has made being involved in the community a party of their DNA.  Even before they opened the doors to the public, they hosted a series of sneak peek events for charities like the Artemis Center, SICSA, and the Food Bank. In 2017 they hosted a dining event to support the families in need of help from all the fires in Sonoma & Napa Valley and each year they participate in the Whoo Cooks For You dinner that benefits The Glen. In 2021 Valenti was honored with the “Nourishing the Community Award” which honored her dedication, excellence and service to her peers, communities and beyond.
This weekend Wheat Penny Oven and Bar is celebrating their 10th anniversary and we asked Chef/Owner Liz Valenti to reflect on that last decade.
How has Wheat Penney changed in the last 10 years?
LV: I think that our core has remained solid- committed to our staff and customers, cooking from our hearts with integrity, challenging each other to grow and evolve in the restaurant and outside in the world.  As time as past, we have grown into more than a pizza place with a few other items.  We make our own cheese, fresh pastas, breads, desserts and our bar program has evolved into one of the finest in Dayton.

Best selling Taylor Street pizza – Italian pork sausage, spinach & garlic-braised mushrooms

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned over the years?
LV: Recognizing that there is no complete play book for a restaurant. Going through Covid made that abundantly clear. We are constantly planning as a team, striving to do our very best each and every day and still we sometimes stumble, but we always help each other up and move forward. I am so grateful for all of the people over these last ten years who played an important role in helping us to become the Wheat Penny Oven and Bar that we are.  No doubt our biggest asset is our incredible staff!
What is YOUR favorite menu item?
LV: This is a tough one, but I still love our meatballs that are from a recipe that my mother taught me as a child.  When they get cooked off every day the kitchen smells like home. 🙂
What are some of Wheat Penny’s best sellers?
LV: Wheat Penny Manhattan, Basil Smash, Eggplant Fries, our green lasagne, Taylor Street Pizza, Chicago style chicken parmesan sandwich, Grilled Shrimp, Broccolini and Peppers with Polenta,  Crispy Brick Chicken Thighs, our seasonal caprese salad, housemade buckeye ice cream, Cauliflower T-Bone with Olive Pistou and our mini Detroit pizza- just to name a few!

Eggplant Fries

To help celebrate their first decade, Wheat Penny is offering 10% off select Wheat Penny Classics on Sat, Aug 26th!

The Theatre Guild Continues to Move the Needle Forward with ‘Radio Golf.’

August 25, 2023 By Joshua Stucky

Waldron Directs ‘Radio Golf’ at Theatre Guild.

The Dayton Theatre Guild has long been known for its cutting edge productions, and its expert presentation of tough subject matter. August Wilson’s ‘Radio Golf‘ remains firmly in that path! I was lucky enough to catch up with the show’s director, Robert-Wayne Waldron. He gave us the inside scoop to this latest performance.

JS: Rob, so good to see you and to get a minute to chat about ‘Radio Golf.’ And with that, why ‘Radio Golf?’ What stuck out about it that made it seem like the play to do today?

RWW:  I did not choose the show it was chosen by the Dayton Theatre Guild to open its 23-24 season. I was chosen from 3 other directors. I jumped at the chance it’s been a few years since I’ve been at the helm of a show and its August Wilson! Radio Golf is the final play in August Wilson’s Century Cycle of ten plays set in Pittsburgh 1997. It tells the story of Harmond Wilks a real-estate developer  who is running to be the first Black mayor of Pittsburgh. When he confronted with sacrificing the past in order to pursue progress.

JS: The show has such depth and truly looks at gentrification and politics….etc. What do you hope audiences get from this show?

RWW: I hope our audience gain a better understanding of the continuing struggle of the Black community to preserve our history and traditions and embrace progress without sacrificing that past.

JS: Timely for sure. I know the Theatre Guild is known for dynamic ‘straight’ plays (non-musicals). How would you say this show is relevant in our climate today?

RWW: First of all, it’s August Wilson, the poet of theatre’s Black America. This show puts it right out there, the things that are still happening today the destruction of neighborhoods and communities in the name of progress, but for who…. certainly not the people in those communities. That’s because this progress and the improvements are out of the financial reach of the people in these communities.

JS: We literally can look around our area and see the same. Wow! So, for you, what is it in directing that you enjoy?

Cast of ‘Radio Golf.’

RWW: I enjoy the process of get a show to the stage. Expressing my creativity and working with the actors to bring the words of the script to life.

JS: And do you have a personal favorite show you have done in the area?

RWW: I have directed a lot of theatre over the years! If I had to pick one, it would be this one Radio Golf.   It came along at a difficult time in my life, health wise, and it created an outlet for me not to be in my head with my health issue. I’m working with this amazing cast of actors and its been an awesome experience.

JS: Speaking of….who are you cast and crew?

RWW: Director: Robert-Wayne Waldron, Harmond Wilks: S. Francis Livisay, Mame Wilks: Jena Perry, Roosevelt Hicks: Lessley Scott, Sterling Johnson: Andre Tomlinson & Elder Joseph Barlow: Franklin Johnson.

August Wilson’s Radio Golf at DTG.

JS: This sounds like a real success for the Guild….what about ticket info?

RWW: August Wilson’s Radio Golf opens today, August 25th and runs weekends thru Sept 10th At the Dayton Theatre Guild 430 Wayne Avenue!

Tickets can be purchased online at Daytontheatreguild.org.
JS: Break a leg, my friend. And thanks for talking with me!
Make sure and look into all the great theater happening in dayton this weekend and every weekend!
Keep up by revisiting us at Dayton937.com.
Josh is always looking to highlight your next performance!
