7 Great Spiked Hot Chocolate Suggestions

January 6, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Hot chocolate plus your favorite booze feels like heaven on earth on a cold day. May we suggest some classic combinations to warm you up?

Baileys Irish Cream

Baileys Irish Cream is an aged whiskey mixed with cream (both the whiskey and cream are sourced in Ireland) and cocoa flavorings. A generous splash of this liqueur will give your hot chocolate an even greater milky richness as well as a silky smooth finish. Despite containing cream, the bottle has a shelf life of 2 years, so you can store it in the refrigerator or a cool dry place until you’re ready to make your next batch of hot chocolate.

Kahlúa

Containing small amounts of caffeine, Kahlúa will give you a slow release of energy when it’s mixed into your warm wintery drink. Consider this version of spiked hot chocolate the perfect swap for an after-dinner cup of full-caff coffee—this mix is like dessert + coffee, all in one cup. The liqueur is flavored with vanilla and arabica coffee, with its major alcohol content coming from rum.

Spiced Rum

You won’t need more than an ounce or two to feel the boozy punch with spiced rum. The signature golden color is a result of the rum aging in wooden barrels, and contributes to the spirit’s rich flavor. The rum’s spiced profile comes from a blend of allspice seeds, nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. All of these tasty elements make a great complement to chocolate and will be an excellent addition to

Cointreau or Triple Sec

For a change, why not add an orange touch to your hot chocolate? This might sound weird, but it is definitely feasible, and take note– delicious.  Orange liqueur like Cointreau or Triple Sec can spike your simple hot chocolate into a boozy yet orangy cocktail– without omitting the chocolate’s goodness.

Peppermint Schnapps

Peppermint Schnapps is a mint-infused liqueur that tastes like boozy candy canes. It is a staple drink during the winter or holiday seasons. But one thing you need to learn is that – this liqueur is great in choco-based cocktails.vSo why not try this spirit with your mug of hot chocolate?

Tequila

Never tried a Mexican-style hot chocolate? As soon as you’re used to its chili-spiced flavoring, you can try the Mexican hot cocoa skewered with tequila.

ce you savor this recipe’s goodness, you can’t help but want more

Peppermint Schnapps

Peppermint Schnapps is a mint-infused liqueur that tastes like boozy candy canes. It is a staple drink during the winter or holiday seasons.  But one thing you need to learn is that – this liqueur is great in choco-based cocktails.

Experiment with whatever liquors you have on hand.  Top your hot chocolate off with a vanilla vodka infused whip cream for a little extra kick!

2nd Location Announced for The Blue Berry Cafe!

January 3, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Just got off the phone with the Muffin Man, who confirmed The Blue Berry Cafe will be taking over the Golden Nugget space as well as moving their Bellbrook location across the street!
He couldn’t confirm timelines- but look for the opening soon on Dixie.
He also confirmed that the Bellbrook move across the street is still happening, and that time line is waiting on the completion of the construction team.  The last day of business is scheduled for Friday, January 19th, 2024 at the original location and they will be open 7 days a week until then.
Update from Kelly on their Blue Berry Cafe Facebook page:
On Tuesday, December 19th – we were told that a fella from Winsupply had asked to meet me with me and Ray. With our guards up we walked over there and introduced ourselves to Moraine City Manager, Mike Davis and Bill Tolliver, VP of Real Estate Services and In House Counsel for Winsupply.
We told him we knew that they bought the Golden Nugget Building and that we thought that was amazing of them to do that for the area!
He asked if we would be interested in putting a location there – we said – oh
My goodness, that is such a nice compliment – truly – but we have all of our savings going into our new location across the street – AND we will never leave Bellbrook! But thank you!
He said, no, I don’t want you to ever leave Bellbrook either- I live in Bellbrook! We want you to add a second location! Listen – it doesn’t hurt to just look! All you have to do is bring the groceries 🤩
We met at the Kettering restaurant the next day. Ray and I didn’t sleep all night – texting back and forth – We told Bill, our answer is yes and that we have two options, either warp speed and get this open asap or we need to wait until Summer after we open the Bellbrook location and have our routine down….Bill said, let’s do Warp Speed!
We have been treated like restaurant royalty by the Winsupply Family and while there has been tears – a lot of tapping Bill on the shoulder to make sure he is real, we are so excited for this opportunity!
While we have had multiple restaurants in the Dayton Area since 1975 – none of them have ever had the same concept. We are excited to take this journey. Our Bellbrook staff is our first priority – we will be working hard to make sure they still have a paycheck coming in the next few weeks as we move forward. So please eat pancakes! 🤩🫐
It’s been a busy 2 weeks since Bill Tolliver walked into our cafe! And we are so grateful!
Cheers to our 20th Year in Business – thank you in advance for your continued support and well wishes!
We love you all so much!
Here we GROW!
Kelley, Ray, Tony, and our Blue Berry Cafe Family!

Flying Pig Tavern Celebrates 1st Anniversary

January 2, 2024 By Lisa Grigsby

Serial entrepreneur James Williams celebrates the first anniversary of his Flying Pig Tavern in Fairborn.  Williams played with the Dayton Rugby Club, who eventually merged their team with an Air Force Team called the Flying Pigs, which is where the name for the bar came from.  Featuring Soft Tip Dart machines
as well as Steel Tip Dart Boards, a free pool table and Friday night karaoke make for a great draw and folks come from all over, according to Williams.  Growing up in Riverside, a lot of his Stebbins High School buddies have become regulars.

James and his wife Lacey with Santa.

Over the holidays Flying Pig hosted a Tips for Toys promotion and they ended up raising $25,000 and were able to purchase 70 Bicycles and numerous other toys, which were given away on Dec 23rd to over 1000 families in need.

“We just love helping people, helping families, and kids. It’s just an amazing feeling in your heart to be able to help people,” James Williams, the owner of Flying Pig said.

While working full time on the flight line as and air craft servicer at WPAFB, Williams opened his first location in 2009 in Dayton the Double Deuce Bar, After selling it to children’s Hospital, he purchased and opened the Double Deuce Family pizzeria in Huber, Heights, Ohio.  He sold that location a week after the epidemic hit with Covid and it was torn down and they built a New Shell gas Station.
This is Williams 3rd Location.  His first location opened in  2009 in Dayton, across from Childrens Hospital,  the Double Deuce Bar.
After selling it to the Hospital, he purchased and opened the Double Deuce Family pizzeria at 5186 Brandt Pike (State Route 201)  in Huber, Heights in February of 2018. He bought the 4,031-square-foot restaurant fully equipped. It had formerly been C’s Pizza. He sold that location a week after the epidemic hit with Covid and it was torn down and they built a New Shell gas Station.
He took a break for a couple years before he and Ray Fulton, bought the Fairborn property.  The location was formerly known as The Afterburner Lounge. After a few months of being open Williams bout out Fulton and became 100% owner of the Flying Pig.
Flying Pig features 5 signature pizza’s, small and large or you can build your own.  Prices range from $9-$22 depending on toppings. They claim its the best pizza in town.
They look forward to hosting their bike night again this summer, which will become Two Wheel Tuesday.

Our Most Viewed Foodie Stories of 2023

December 31, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

We cover a lot of bar and restaurant stories on our website, Dayton Dining Facebook page and Dayton Foodies Group and as look back on 2023, here are our most read stories of the year.

Our fifth most read story fo the year was Downtown Brewery Closed. On Oct 17th we announced the fate of  Lock 27 Brewing & Taproom  closing, six years after it opened the doors near the Dragons Baseball stadium.  The good news, their suburban space in Centerville is staying open.

Our fourth most read story also came in Ocober when a  Dayton Eatery Named to Yelp’s Top 100 in Midwest. The husband and wife couple, Casey and Patrick that own and operate Grist in Downtown Dayton got some national recognition for their specialty pasta market and restaurant that serves lunch and dinner, sells pasta, bread and other treats to go, as well as offering cooking classes.

Coming in as the 3rd most read story, On Oct 7th we revealed that the Doubleday’s Chain Introduces New Concept.  According to Doubleday’s management Home Plate will open late Jan/early February.  With only 20 seats, the concept will concentrate on carry out of Doubleday’s favorite, soups, salads and sandwiches.

Our second most popular posting happened on  On June 30th we announced the the management change at Treasure Island, with Dana & Katherine Downs taking over July 1st. Slight menu modifications were predicted to  ensure the efficiency and success of the restaurant. Well, as we all know now, that didn’t last long and the restaurant has been handed back to owner Duane Issacs and closed temporarily. Rumor has it that former General Manager Nancy Zechar will be reopening Treasure Island mid January.

Dayton937.com’s  Most Read Story of the Year: In Sept of 23 we announced the Ownership Change For Bill’s Donuts.  Lisa Tucker sat down with our own Bryan Suddith to talk about the business her family had run since 1960.  A long time beloved business that did so much for the community, this announcement was a big shake up for the Miami Valley. New owners Marshall and Amy Lachman have lived up to their pledge to not change anything stay involved with supporting our community

Five Grains Noodle House Opens Thurs, Dec 28th

December 27, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Owner Yaqin Jing and her husband, Zeng Siong will be opening Five Grains Noodle House in the spot that once housed Chop Suey Carry out on Dorothy Lane. And while they both featured Chinese cuisine, the food that will served at the Noodle House is very much authentic Chinese cuisine centered around soup bowls.  The couple ran 4 restaurants in the south of China and when they moved to Dayton they have a desire to share the food they grew up on with our community.

The menu is built around the five different noodles, each representing a different grain. Rice, corn, peas, wheat and sorghum combined with proteins that include fish, beef, pork and chicken, as well as some additional options. They mentioned that sourcing ingredients has been a little more challenging as well as expensive compared to what they had back home in China.

Here’s a look at the menu:

The owners mother Chunyun Zhou was there cooking when I visited before their opening.  She insisted on making me a bowl of soup. She choose #3 on the top list- the Five Grain Noodle soup with fish and tofu. Served on the side were fried yellow peas, which I was encouraged to put in the soup and added a nice texture to the dish.   The Chinese writing on the bowl says Five Grains Noodle House.  While the Chinese eat this dish with chopsticks, I used a fork and the soup spoon to attack this bowl.

Guest can customize the spice level of their bowl, which will be built using Pepper oil or several kinds of peppers to bring the heat.

The dining room seats about 48 guests, and the owners expect to do a lot of carry-out. They spent about 3 months remodeling the interior and it has a clean crisp feel to it.

Five Grains Noodle House

1465 E. Dorothy Lane
Kettering, OH 45429

Open 7 days a week:
11:00 am to 9:00 pm

We Said Goodbye To These Food Businesses in 2023

December 27, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

In the past year over 80 new restaurants opened in the Miami Valley they food scene—no place is immune to restaurant closures. Now with the end of 2023 before us , we’ve put together a comprehensive list of the eateries that have closed this year.

2023 saw some long time local Dayton favorites like Tanks, Chop Suey Carryout* and Carmel’s close their doors.  But chains weren’t immune to closing either. CoreLife Eatery, the Long John Silver’s in Springboro, O’Charley’s Dayton Mall, the last area Ruby Tuesday’s in Troy and the Rally’s on Gettysburg and the Frisch’s Big Boy in Moraine all bid adieu to the Miami Valley this year.

We lost some great chicken when Krispy Krunchy Chicken pulled out of town. Steve & Tammy’s Tavern*, Crazy King Burrito, Basil’s in Beavercreek*, Bolts Sports Cafe and Hero’s Pizza* in Springboro all bowed out in 2023.

Little mom and pop places like Story’s Pizza & Smoothies in Moraine, Salsas Mexican Restaurant* in Riverside, Joe Mama’s Taste of Dayton*, Ms Bettys Kitchen*, Oh Crêpe in Troy- (though they’ve said they’ll still operate their food tuck), Sunnu Grill with their Senegalese cuisine and Sweet Tooth just couldn’t survive in a climate of increasing prices on products and a tough hiring market.

Some closings came as a surprise, like Twist Cupcakery*- who’s owner was ready to move on to a new challenge, Mamaw’s Bakery- which was opened as a pilot and owner Mendy Williams decided the return just wasn’t worth the time invested. Flyboy Deli downtown closed due to the owners health struggles and Jaqua’s at The Green closed down soon after the owner’s death. Carmen’s Deli closed down due to lack of downtown business as did Third Perk, first at Gem City Market and then their downtown location.

The Bar & Bistro at Top of the Market decided to turn their venue into rentals, Zen Lounge* closed as Press Coffee Bar* Belmont.

The good news is many of these locations* already have or will soon have new tenants and we’ll have new places to explore.

Stay tuned for our post on all the places that opened in 2023.
