Five Grains Noodle House Opens Thurs, Dec 28th

December 27, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Owner Yaqin Jing and her husband, Zeng Siong will be opening Five Grains Noodle House in the spot that once housed Chop Suey Carry out on Dorothy Lane. And while they both featured Chinese cuisine, the food that will served at the Noodle House is very much authentic Chinese cuisine centered around soup bowls.  The couple ran 4 restaurants in the south of China and when they moved to Dayton they have a desire to share the food they grew up on with our community.

The menu is built around the five different noodles, each representing a different grain. Rice, corn, peas, wheat and sorghum combined with proteins that include fish, beef, pork and chicken, as well as some additional options. They mentioned that sourcing ingredients has been a little more challenging as well as expensive compared to what they had back home in China.

Here’s a look at the menu:

The owners mother Chunyun Zhou was there cooking when I visited before their opening.  She insisted on making me a bowl of soup. She choose #3 on the top list- the Five Grain Noodle soup with fish and tofu. Served on the side were fried yellow peas, which I was encouraged to put in the soup and added a nice texture to the dish.   The Chinese writing on the bowl says Five Grains Noodle House.  While the Chinese eat this dish with chopsticks, I used a fork and the soup spoon to attack this bowl.

Guest can customize the spice level of their bowl, which will be built using Pepper oil or several kinds of peppers to bring the heat.

The dining room seats about 48 guests, and the owners expect to do a lot of carry-out. They spent about 3 months remodeling the interior and it has a clean crisp feel to it.

Turning Point for Ace Asian Cafe ?

October 31, 2018 By Dayton937

Teriyaki Salmon in a Bento Box

When familiar faces struck a deal with The Greene to again take over the closed Choe’s Bistro, it was a case of old owners, cleaning up a new owners mess.  Michelle and Charles Yang managed “Choe’s Asian Bistro” from December 2014 through March 2017.  After turning it over to new management, back rent and tax questions forced The Greene to close the restaurant.  The Yangs came back to the rescue re-opening the eatery in April 2018.  Today, after 7 months, new management has fine tuned their dishes. They will be adding a new chef and new menu additions are around the corner.     The Food Adventures Crew has exclusive scoop on what could be the turning point for Ace Asian Cafe.

Outside of Ace Asian Cafe

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON ACE ASIAN CAFE at THE GREENE:

— Located at 4394 Juniper Way at The Greene outdoor mall in Beavercreek, Ace Asian Bistro has a menu that encompasses many countries, including THAILAND, CHINA, KOREA, and JAPAN.

— The restaurant is open
Monday – Thursday: 11:30am -10pm,
Friday: 11:30am – 11pm
Saturday: Noon – 11pm
Sunday: Noon – 9pm

Option for a Korean BBQ Table with built in grill

— Ace Asian Cafe is currently developing some new specials for kids and seniors, as well as special discount days for Air Force members.  Could we see a weekly special of endless sushi?  Plans are also in the works for a special Food Adventure Tour of Asia !  Stay tuned to Dayton Most Metro for info on the December event.

— Then menu highlights are a full-blown list of sushi offerings, an option to sit at a table with a Korean BBQ built in, Pad Thai and Chinese Dishes.  Want some Sake?  They’ve got you covered there with a full selection and a cocktail rich bar.

— Besides a full dining room, sushi bar and cocktail bar, Ace Asian Cafe has a 50 person upstairs seating area for private events. It also has a Korean BBQ seating option for about 24 seats in the dining room.  The ambiance is elegant and makes it feel like you are at a special occasion.

— Menu prices are typically $12.95- $14.95 for entrees.  Lunch Bento Boxes are a great way to try a variety of foods and run about $10.95.  Sushi Rolls run from 8 bucks to about $13.50.

We have had good service on our visits here.  The wait staff was attentive and friendly.

Time to explore the menu which takes on an entire continent.

Our patented “must eats”…

MUST EATS at ACE ASIAN CAFE:

Calamari and Sweet Chili Sauce

—CRAB RANGOON:
The old standard and everyone’s favorite, seems to be the most popular menu item here. Nice and creamy and a sauce like you have never tasted before for dipping. It is a smoky sweet n sour sauce.

— BENTO BOX WITH TERIYAKI SALMON:
One of the best ways to sample the menu is through a Bento Box. And at the lunch price of $10.95 it is economical.  You pick 2 entree dishes and it is served with a spring roll, rice, orange slices and a salad.  Your entree choices include pad Thai, sushi rolls, Korean Bulgogi, Curry dishes and Chinese entrees.

— CALAMARI IN SPICY CHILI SAUCE:
Deep fried calamari rings with a fantastic dipping sauce. The sweet sauce and spice, is the perfect contrast to the light crunch. The calamari does not have a fishy taste at all.

Hot n Sour Soup

— HOT N SOUR SOUP:
Their version is definitely worth ordering. All of their soups are good, but this one is the best. Mouth watering with a touch of heat.

— YELLOWTAIL NIGIRI
Then simple thought of a fresh piece of raw fish and rice. If raw is your thing, try the Yellowtail. Dip in wasabi and soy sauce to complete the tasty deal.

— THE WASHINGTON SUSHI ROLL:
Our favorite sushi roll is this one. It features cooked Shrimp Tempura, Cucumber, and cooked Crab topped with Salmon, Avocado, Tobago, Wasabi Dressing, Sweet Sauce & Goma Dressing. The result is a sweet and crunchy taste. If you like shrimp, crab and salmon, you must try this roll.

— GENERAL TSO’S CHICKEN:
They have a nice take on an old favorite. Medium sized chunks of deep-fried shrimp, tossed in a light brown sauce with stir fired vegetable surrounding the plate. A good, old-fashioned staple of Chinese cuisine done right.

— CHICKEN BULGOGI on the KOREAN BBQ TABLE:

General Tso’s Chicken

You or the server get to cook this shredded marinated chicken on the table side grill. It is a fun experience and the aroma as the chicken cooks is amazing. A few minutes and sizzles later, and you have a piping hot chicken grilled dish in front of you. Served with rice, the grilled onion and spices are a perfect blend.

Honorable Mention:

Katsu Chicken Bento Box – A nice white meat piece, sliced and panko fried, drizzled with Asian sauces.

Blue Crab Stuffed Salmon – Baked Salmon with blue crab, stir fired vegetables and Asian spices.

CJ Chan Quietly Enters Year 8

March 19, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Inside CJ CHan’s Bar on Alex Bell Rd.

An unsung restaurant has developed a solid following over the past 7 years.  The restaurant is the locally owned CJ Chan on Wilmington Ave, with a second thriving location on Alex Rd for the past 2 years.

Recently, we have heard more and more fellow foodies ask us to meet at CJ Chan for dinner or lunch.  We have obliged, and after eating there about a dozen times in the past 10 months, our Food Adventure crew understands the attraction.  If they don’t get you with a sauce, they will get you with the sushi boss.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on CJ CHAN:

— This mom and pop restaurant opened up in 2010 at 536 Wilmington Ave in Dayton, and 2 years ago on 2747 W. Alex Bell Rd in Moraine/Centerville.

Full Sushi Bar

— The menu features CHINESE and JAPANESE cuisine, so you can try the best of both worlds, made by local chefs.  From Sushi and Hibachi to Szechuan dishes and Crab Rangoon, the menu has something for everyone covering the food spectrum of 2  countries.

— Both CJ Chan locations are small, seating about 40, but the dining room size is perfect for an intimate lunch and the crowds seem to flow quickly in and out.  Both locations have sushi bar seating as well.

— This eatery has some of the friendliest, most attentive service staff in town.  Sometimes there may be a slight language barrier, but overall, the service is very impressive.

Egg Roll and Spicy Shrimp dish

— The hours are great for early lunches or later dinners:
Mon – Thu: 10:30AM–10PM
Fri – Sat: 10:30AM–10:30PM
Sun: 11:30AM–10PM

— We just found out that they have a second menu at the Wilmington Ave location called the “Hot Pot” Menu.  It features, chicken, beef or seafood hot pots for $18-$20.  Are they soups? Are they just hot bowls of food? Guess what we will be having next visit …. ?

But what dishes are the best of the best on this extensive Asian Menu?  Food Adventures is here to sort it out for you on our patented MUST EATS list.  Grab your chopsticks and a napkin, because these aren’t fusion menus, they are 2 separate Chinese and Japanese full menus.. Here we go …

MUST EATS at CJ CHAN:

— THE EGG ROLLS:
We don’t know why, but the distinct flavor of these egg rolls are delicious. Mostly cabbage and wrap, the hand rolled appetizers have some spice in them that we find delicious and addicting.  Definitely take time to splash the egg roll inside with soy sauce and dip it in sweet and sour sauce.  You have to ask for that sauce, or they will bring you duck sauce.  Trust us, the sweet n sour sauce is night and day better than  the duck sauce.

Kani Salad

—THE KANI SALAD:
Incredibly refreshing mound of shredded cucumber, crab and touched off with hot mayo and vinegar mix with crunchy sprinkles on top.    Fun to eat with chopsticks, this appetizer will bring a smile to your face.  If you love crab, this appetizer is for you.  A perfect way to start your meal, it is an essential part of a successful visit to CJ Chans.

— SALMON TERIYAKI BENTO BOX LUNCH:
This bento box has it all for a great lunch.  The salmon is grilled to perfection.  Other bento box items include a California Roll, White Rice, and Salad.  It is priced right and filling option for a nice lunch.  They serve you a nice piece of salmon as the highlight to the meal.  Don’t forget to dip thjat California roll in wasabi and soy sauce.

—GENERAL TSO’s SHRIMP:
A great twist on a dish normally used with chicken.  It is a breaded shrimp dish with a hot and sweet browninsh sauce.  Typically served along with broccoli, they serve it with cucumber slices.  This was one of our all time favorite dishes at CJ Chans.  Great flavors in this Chinese dish.

—SASHIMI LUNCH:
This is for the serious sushi lover.  You get a bento box with 8 pieces of raw fish chosen by the sushi chef.  Also served with a California Roll.  This is a great deal and a steal at 9.55 for lunch.  You also get white rice and a salad in the bento box too.  In the past they have given us fish like salmon, tuna, white tuna, tilapia, octopus, and yellowtail.  Get a side of soy sauce, pout it in the small sushi soy dish, add the wasabi, stir it in and dip the fish into that.  This is PURE heaven …  Amazing, because the fish is so fresh it melts in your mouth.

—THE TRIPLE ROLL
Absolutely fantastic combination of Tuna, Salmon and avocado.  It is the best sushi roll at CJ Chan and one of our all time favorites anywhere.  Do you love raw fish?  This roll is for you and not for the squeamish.  It is a great deal because they pack a lot of salmon and tuna into this roll.  If you are not doing our wasabi and soy sauce dip to finish this off, then  you are missing half of the taste.

Teriyaki Salmon Bento Box

The key to CJ CHAN is to find your sauce and experiment with various dishes until you find your favorites.  Since the menu is so extensive, the sauces will lead you to the promise land.  Lunch is the best deal of course, due to better prices.  The sushi is a fantastic option and cannot be missed on any visit.  Both locations are great, but the busier lunch crowd is on Wilmington Ave, the bustle in and out and there is usually not a wait, but it comes close.

So stop in at Alex Rd or Wilmington Ave and experiment for yourself.  Make that sushi chef work his magic, and keep the bento boxes coming.  You will love it !

Food Adventures is a local Dayton area food blog that focuses on Miami Valley food places.  We have no rules, and eat it all,  We have a weekly article feature right here on DaytonMostMetro.com  Follow Food Adventures on Facebook for lots of food photos and fun by clicking here.

Osaka: New Buffet with Conveyor Belt Sushi

September 29, 2015 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Raw Salmon Sushi & Raw Salmon Sashimi

A new Japanese / Chinese Buffet called Osaka has opened behind the Dayton Mall and the Food Adventures Crew has the scoop after a few visits.  The newly remodeled building formerly housed Max & Erma’s for decades, and most recently Hazel Grill.  The place is basically a buffet, yet they are trying to distinguish themselves by doing a few things differently.

One attraction at Osaka, is the “Conveyor Belt of Sushi.”  Now, this is not the typical conveyor belt sushi at restaurants that winds its way around the dining area and is priced based on color of the plate you pick up.  No, this is just a side attraction and part of the “All You Can Eat” concept.

But this concept is a bit different at Osaka Sushi and Hibachi Buffet.

Owner/ Manager John Weng of Osaka Buffet

Gone are the metal steam pans, replaced by large family style, white serving dishes.  Each dish looks more appetizing.  Owner/Manager John Weng told us that this allows for a smaller quantity on each dish, in the hopes that no buffet item sits too long.  Beyond that, this buffet is similar to the ones you have seen in the past, although this one seems a little cleaner.

We have visited Osaka four times since it opened, and have tried virtually every menu item.  Here are the Food Adventure findings…

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Osaka Sushi & Hibachi Buffet is located at 8901 Kingsridge Dr.

— Buffet prices are as follows: Lunch = $8.95, Dinner = $14.95

— Not a fan of “All you can eat?,”  that’s ok ladies, you can order from a full Sushi, Japanese and Chinese Menu.

— Hours are: Monday – Saturday 10:30am – 10pm, Sundays 10:30am – 9:30pm

Prawns on the Buffet

— Buffet highlights include:

A sushi conveyor belt with plates of 2-3 pieces of sushi

A raw hibachi bar and grill, where you mix your ingredients and a hibachi cook stir fry’s your mixture with your choice of sauce.

Appetizer area and Main Entree bars

Soup, Fruit and Dessert areas

With dozens of menu items, what are the best eats?  From Duck to Crab Sushi, we sort through it all and give you our patented MUST EATS !

MUST EATS:

— THE SALMON SASHIMI:  Scope out the conveyor belt for the pieces of raw, sliced salmon with no rice.  These slices are fresh and melt in your mouth.  Absolutely the best item on the conveyor belt of love.

Spicy Crab sushi with Flying Fish roe on top

— THE HIBACHI RAW BAR & GRILL:  Take advantage of your own mini-Mongolian Grill.  Whatever your concoction of meats and veggies, may we suggest you ask for your mixture to be cooked in the Brown Hibachi Sauce.  It is absolutely delicious.

— SPICY CRAB SUSHI with FISH ROE on TOP:  These are easy to spot, because they have colorful fish eggs sprinkled on top of the sushi roll in colors of green, black or orange.

— THE CRAB ANGLE:  These huge, triangular deep fried snacks are STUFFED with crab and cream cheese.  The result is a big, filling couple of bites of cheesy goodness.

— THE DUNGENESS CRAB:  Hardshell crabs, cut in half and separated at the leg joints.  The leg joints are then battered and stir fried with a brown sauce.  The result is a crab crackin’, shell suckin’ good time.

— CHEESEY MUSSELS:  Baked Mussels in the shell, covered with creamy cheese mixture.  Perfect description would be “they’re heavenly.”

— RAW OYSTERS:  Rarely seen on buffets in Dayton, take advantage when you see these bad boys laying out on ice.

Honorable Mention: The Crab Nigiri Sushi was huge and delicious.  Also, the Fried Shrimp  are nothing short of addicting.

The Conveyor Belt of Sushi runs the entire time, replacing and adding plates constantly.

So there you have the lowdown on Osaka Sushi and Hibachi Buffet, the newest buffet in town. Smaller plates, less waste, fresher food

is their philosophy.  They have some great items, we are fans and hope the restaurant takes hold for a long time.

Osaka is a perfect place to push your pallet comfort zone.  Try new things from crawfish to frog legs.  Come out to Kingsridge Drive by the Dayton Mall and experience your own little Food Adventure.  P.S., the conveyor belt doesn’t work if you sit or stand on it … just kidding, but don’t try it anyway…

A Second Helping of … North China Restaurant

August 22, 2014 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Mu-Shu Pork before it goes into the "burrito wrapper"

Mu-Shu Pork before it goes into the “burrito wrapper”

The best deserves a second mention.  Our feature article spinoffs, called “A second helping of “ are made for such occasions.  You may recall our article over 3 years ago where Food Adventures proclaimed to the world that “North China Restaurant has the best damn egg rolls ever!”  We decided North China is worthy of our “Second Helping” feature.  So hop on on our Food Adventure and grab some chopsticks, as we break through the Great Wall.  Let’s dive into a second helping of one of our favorite places in the Miami Valley, NORTH CHINA !

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Things have not changed a at North China a bit since our 2011 article, and that’s how we like it.  We have visited North China dozens of times since the last article.  Whether carryout or dine-in, we are never disappointed.  The food quality is still amazing and so is the consistency.

— The service remains top notch.  Your water glass is never empty, and you will never have that “where is our server” look on your face.

— This Centerville eatery is closed every Monday.  Also, every year during July, they take a family vacation and close the restaurant for about 10 days.

— Family owned for almost 30 years, you get to know the family when you come here.   They are friendly and the place is full of regulars who have been visiting for decades.

The Big Ragu happens to be one of those regulars, and we have eaten almost every item on their extensive menu since 1987.

So now, it is time to list the one-of-a-kind, earth shattering, ground breaking… MUST EATS for North China !

MUST EATS:

— MU-SHU PORK:  Like little crepes from the heavens.  These delicacies are made table side and are the Chinese version of burritos.  First, the tortilla like wrapper is primed with a plum sauce.  Then, a stirfry mix of pork, cabbage and veggies are loaded and wrapped.  Be careful eating these.  The burrito wrapper can also double as a water slide, shooting soy sauce and goodness down your shirt.  Big Ragu has a closet full of stained shirts that have been”touched” by his North China Mu-Shu Pork adventures.

— ZHA JIANG MIAN:  Say what?  We just call this #7 on the Korean Menu.  It is “lo mein” type noodles served with a sauce of black bean paste and stir fried pork.  This is a special dish that you must ask for.  One of the “secret tips” at North China is that they have a Korean Menu by request only.  In the mood for an exotic and authentic Food Adventure?  Get the Zha Jiang Mian, but make sure you ask them for hot sauce and the dry hot pepper too.  Being authentic, it is a little bland but a couple of spoonfuls of hot sauce brings this dish alive !

— THE EGG ROLLS:  Handmade, freshly made, every day.  The killer ingredient is the peanut dust or peanut paste used in these egg rolls.  Dip them in a mixture of soy sauce and sweet and sour, or mustard sauce.   The Big Ragu has such a strong addiction to these that we have written letters to Dr. Phil about it.

Mongolian chicken - omg good

The Mongolian Chicken is beyond amazing.

— MONGOLIAN CHICKEN: A honey-like glaze sauce on shavings of white meat chicken, over a bed of crispy noodles.  You can ask for it “spicy” like the Big Ragu does.  It is a perfect mixture of sweet and heat.

— ORANGE BEEF: Lightly fried strips of beef that curl when cooked.  This mouth watering dish is made with fresh orange peels, and a homemade brown sauce.  The incredible taste of this entree, makes it a favorite.

— CRISPY SHRIMP:  A deep fried dish that Big Ragu dreams about every other night.  This sweet concoction has a sauce with a yellow tint, and a tiny hot pepper kick.  If you wanna play naughty, get this offering over some white rice and go downtown to China Town.

— CRAB RANGOONS or CRAB ANGLE: Hand made every day by the owners.  If you order them, you will be fighting over the last one.

Honorable Mention:

Chicken Wings – Those damn chicken wings they serve you at lunch are so deliciously sticky, but you only get one served with a small crab rangoon.  Don’t fear friends, you can actually order a plate of these tremendous, sweet wings.  Or you just be a pain in the azz and ask for two wings and no crab rangoon with your lunch.

Pot Stickers – Yet another incredible appetizer from scratch.  They are steamed, then pan fried for that brown crisp edge.  The special soy sauce served with them is the secret to bringing out the pork flavor.

Hello noodles - the Korean Menu is good - tip: It needs some hot sauce

North China’s Korean Menu is by Request Only. Our favorite is this dish, #7 Pork Noodles with Black Bean Sauce (tip: add hot sauce to this dish to enhance flavor)

House Noodle Soup – We have been enjoying this masterpiece since the late 1980’s.  It is a huge portion at a cheap cost.  The big soup bowl is filled with noodles, shrimp, beef, scallops and a few veggies.  Such a large serving that The Big Ragu always takes about half of it home.  We suggest you get the “spicy” version, but you have to ask for it.

Szechuan Chicken or Shrimp – The best in Dayton, hands down.  Deep fried and a comforting mix of hot and sweet tastes.

Sizzling Rice Soup – The only kind like it in Dayton.  Been serving it since 1987.  Chicken, broth, light veggies and rice.  Makes you feel warm inside.

It was hard for us to just name a few of the menu items, because everything is so good here.  But we gave you a decent map to the dishes “you gotta try.”  Explore the menu, we have for almost 30 years!  So please, head to North China and as we always say .. “Wok dont run.”

A little note on what makes Food Adventures unique:

As our fans know, we don’t go to a place, get a couple of entrees and an appetizer, then write an article.  No, no, no.. we are different, we are Food Adventurers.  That means we visit a restaurant many times, different days, different times and eat practically everything on the menu before it becomes a feature story on Dayton Most Metro.  That’s what’s needed to get a feel for a restaurant.  That’s the difference when you are reading Food Adventures.  No drive-by visits or shared photo from a restaurant’s Facebook page.  Fanatical foodies appreciate the little known secrets and the inside scoop.  We do things you won’t see anywhere else: original stories, original events, and original ideas.  No stock photos here.  This philosophy isn’t something we ripped off or started yesterday. We have been doing this since 2008.  Food Adventures isn’t our job, it is our hobby and passion, so there is no agenda.  We can be honest about what restaurants we love without worrying about advertising or if they belong to a local club.  We are independent and free to write about whatever foodstuffs we want. That being said, please LIKE US ON FACEBOOK if you haven’t already !

Chop Suey Carryout: The Oldest Chinese Restaurant in Dayton

September 19, 2013 By Dayton937 2 Comments

Something is to be said for a restaurant that has been serving dishes for over 40 years.   Chop Suey Carryout at 1465 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering has quietly done just that.  In fact, this eatery is the first place we ever tasted Chinese food.  They don’t have a website or even a Facebook page, but they have been cranking out Asian classics and we have been having Food Adventures here since Gerald Ford was President.   How has this place stayed in business for so long?  The answer is consistently good food and good prices.  Their recipes remain identical since the 70’s, and the result is generations of loyal followers.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Chop Suey Carryout was opened in 1973 by a family who had moved to the U.S. from Taiwan.  The same family owns the restaurant today, and have kept the location on E. Dorothy Lane for the entire run.

— As the name suggests, it is a great place for carryout.  If you must dine-in be prepared for the retro dining room.  We voted it “Best Dining Room for filming a scene from Kojak.”

— The prices are reasonable and all dishes come in size Regular or Large.  Do yourself a favor, get the regular, it is a good sized portion and will save you some cash.

— All the meals are served in those “little Chinese to-go boxes,” even if you dine-in.  It makes for a fun Food Adventure, just grab some chop sticks and go to town.

— Chop Suey Carryout is closed on Sundays, so make sure you hit them up Monday through Saturday til about 9pm.

Shrimp Chop Suey – The Best Chop Suey in Dayton

— Drink selection is very limited.  They have a couple of soda brands and maybe a tea.

Now, get ready to wok and roll as FOOD ADVENTURES gives you our…

****MUST EATS !!!****

— CHOP SUEY:  Of course !  How can you write an article about this place and not mention their specialty namesake?   Answer: YOU CANT !  Unless your a food critic who doesn’t know what they are doing.  Our favorite is the Shrimp Chop Suey, but you can get vegetable, pork, chicken or beef varieties.  This creamy mixture of cabbage and vegetables is the best chop suey in Dayton.  It is served over steamed rice and is very filling.

— CHOW MEIN:  This dish is identical to Chop Suey, except it is served over hard Chinese noodles.  Again you have vegetable or various meat options.   However, we have been eating this dish since we played t-ball and we say go for the Shrimp Chow Mein option (or Chicken if you need a substitute)!   The clear sauce on this dish has an amazing flavor and is how we remember it as kids.  It is the best chow mein in Dayton and never disappoints.

Fantastic Hot n Sour Soup – be careful, it is always Scalding Hot !

— HOT & SOUR SOUP:  Addicting, flavorful ..and SCALDING HOT !  Beware: this is served hot enough to burn your mouth for 20 minutes.  The 20 minute wait is worth it, as this hot and sour soup rivals the big name restaurants in town.

— SWEET & SOUR SHRIMP:  An old classic served up right by an old restaurant.  We don’t know why it is so good, but Big Ragu says it is the best Sweet & Sour dish in the Miami Valley.  Maybe it is the lightly crispy, deep fried batter on the shrimp.   Or maybe it is the classic, deep red, sweet and sour sauce unlike any other.  Secret:  we think it is the combination when the two mix.  Again, if you are a land lubber and hate seafood.. try the sweet & sour chicken option.

— SESAME CHICKEN:  A good flavored sauce covering deep fried, white meat chicken.  The sesame sprinkles are the finishing touch.  Pour over white rice for sheer heaven.

Sesame Shrimp & all entrees are served in Chinese “to-go” boxes. Easy Chopstick eatin’

Honorable Mention:  Egg Foo Young – Chop Suey Carryout is one of the few places in town that serves this dish and does it justice.  The same can be said for their Moo Goo Gai Pan.  Again, we have been ordering and eating this stuff before anyone twirled a rubix cube, so trust us.   Also, the Kung Pao Chicken is  great in a pinch.   Most recently we tried a dish we have only seen at Chop Suey Carryout called Wor Shue Gai.  It is a deep fried chicken dish, with a curious yellow sauce.  It needs some spiciness, so we say stick with the ‘Must Eat’ classics !

Some things like disco music and Laverne & Shirley didn’t survive the 70’s.   Chop Suey Carryout survived and is still stir frying and high flying today.   Wok, don’t run, to this Kettering icon, and try some of our favorites.  Discover why after four decades, Daytonians still stand in line for this takeout Food Adventure.

North China – Best Damn Egg Roll Ever

June 23, 2011 By Dayton937 3 Comments

The best egg roll you will ever eat

We cant get enough egg rolls at a little place in Centerville.  This place is called North China. For our first food adventure posting we chose a favorite in our home town.  We are reformed Chinese buffet-ists.  No longer are we blinded by the tacky neon lights that adorn the buffets.  We have found a place that changes all that.

Since 1987, North China has been doing things the right way.. homemade.  They roll their own egg rolls, which have a peanut flavor that is downright addicting.  They press their own wontons, they handmake each crab rangoon.  This is one of Ragu’s Favorite places to eat, and the prices are an incredible value.  Folks, the lunch prices average 6 to 7 dollars and you get soup, wonton and a chicken wing.

Each dining experience at North China is like a family affair. It starts with being greeted by the owners, a friendly staff, and inviting decor.  We always enjoy comparing our bellys to the life sized Buddah statue in the lobby.

The menu has lots of options, traditional choices and not so traditional choices.  Want to be a food adventurer?  Then go for the Korean menu and play roullette (written in Korean, bring your own translator).  This is how we stumbled into the gelatinous sea cucumber, which is one of the most interesting, exotic and strange things we have tasted.

Orange Beef: A Labor of Love

Here is what we do recommend:

First and foremost, you have to try the best damn Egg Roll ever.  The hint of peanut and pork is amazing to even the grumpiest of people.

One of our current faves is Orange Beef, a dish that is made with hand sliced orange rind and bursting with flavor.  Not your bottled sauce here.

The House Noodle Soup is very tasty and is filled with noodles, shrimp, beef and scallops.  Even the Food Adventurers couldn’t finish this meal sized soup big enough for 2.

Ragu’s Fave: Crispy Shrimp

Ragu has been addicted to the Crispy Shrimp dinner since the late 80’s, a fried favorite with a sweet spicy sauce.  Ragu also loves the thinly sliced Mongolian Chicken lunch which is served over a bed of crispy rice noodles (he asks them to make it spicy!).

If you are looking for a great Chinese restaurant, we invite you to check out one of our favorites.  It is a great sit down dining experience.

Chef/Owner “George” is a master craftsman and takes pride in his dishes.   Your humble Food Adventurers say “RUN DONT WOK to NORTH CHINA !”
