Lock 27

Our Most Viewed Foodie Stories of 2023

December 31, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

We cover a lot of bar and restaurant stories on our website, Dayton Dining Facebook page and Dayton Foodies Group and as look back on 2023, here are our most read stories of the year.

Our fifth most read story fo the year was Downtown Brewery Closed. On Oct 17th we announced the fate of  Lock 27 Brewing & Taproom  closing, six years after it opened the doors near the Dragons Baseball stadium.  The good news, their suburban space in Centerville is staying open.

Our fourth most read story also came in Ocober when a  Dayton Eatery Named to Yelp’s Top 100 in Midwest. The husband and wife couple, Casey and Patrick that own and operate Grist in Downtown Dayton got some national recognition for their specialty pasta market and restaurant that serves lunch and dinner, sells pasta, bread and other treats to go, as well as offering cooking classes.

Coming in as the 3rd most read story, On Oct 7th we revealed that the Doubleday’s Chain Introduces New Concept.  According to Doubleday’s management Home Plate will open late Jan/early February.  With only 20 seats, the concept will concentrate on carry out of Doubleday’s favorite, soups, salads and sandwiches.

Our second most popular posting happened on  On June 30th we announced the the management change at Treasure Island, with Dana & Katherine Downs taking over July 1st. Slight menu modifications were predicted to  ensure the efficiency and success of the restaurant. Well, as we all know now, that didn’t last long and the restaurant has been handed back to owner Duane Issacs and closed temporarily. Rumor has it that former General Manager Nancy Zechar will be reopening Treasure Island mid January.

Dayton937.com’s  Most Read Story of the Year: In Sept of 23 we announced the Ownership Change For Bill’s Donuts.  Lisa Tucker sat down with our own Bryan Suddith to talk about the business her family had run since 1960.  A long time beloved business that did so much for the community, this announcement was a big shake up for the Miami Valley. New owners Marshall and Amy Lachman have lived up to their pledge to not change anything stay involved with supporting our community

Downtown Brewery Closed

October 17, 2023 By Lisa Grigsby

Downtown’s Lock 27 Brewing & Taproom has permanently shut the doors.  The location opened up Tues, Sept 5th of 2017 on the first floor of the Delco Building, occupying 12,000 square feet and sat about 120.  When it first opened it served lunch and dinner. Most recently it was open 3-9pm Mon – Wed and opened at noon Thurs- Sunday.

According to a facebook post from former employee Tony Thomas, “I just started @ at Lock 27 downtown. Five days later it’d closed permanently.” Employees received an email to notify them of the closing- effective that day.

He also shared that the Centerville location is staying open.

Anther former manager said things have been rough for a while, with many of their deliveries demanding cash on delivery and many vendors calling for past due payments.

We’ve reached out to Founder Steve Barnhart and his son Collin, the sales manager for more information and haven’t heard back yet.  We’ll follow up with more information once we get it.

Quest For Dayton’s Best: Chicken Wings

July 29, 2023 By Bryan Suddith

The Buffalo Wing was an economical snack created in response to late-night bar patrons looking for a quick snack. In the now famed Anchor Bar in Buffalo, more than 50 years ago, the Buffalo Chicken Wing was invented. PS. The guys who started BW’s (BW3’s) were students at Kent State from Buffalo and wanted that treat from home, so they opened a place.

Now…Dayton has no shortage of places to get wings. Everyone is getting in on the wing business but a few in the area do it right.

Quick disclaimer, I can’t in good faith review a wing produced by any chain that specializes in pizza. Wings that are 40 minutes old and delivered in a cardboard box is just wrong. Secondly, I left out two locally famous wing joints. For the record, I love having a tall beer and a plate of wings from Roosters or Frickers. I enjoy both equally. But…for this quest, I went to the little spots.
Today I am talking Dayton’s best wings, my favorites. A place where you can always get a great wing. The best if you will. Here’s where I land in my quest for the best of Dayton chicken wings.
Lock 27
1035 South Main Street
Centerville, Ohio 45458
Dayton Dragons Plaza
329 E. First St.
Dayton, Ohio 45402
Lock 27 is making magic one wing at a time. These are smoked. Deep-fried and full of flavor unmatched in Dayton. These aren’t the 10-cent wings of your college days. Crispy, but insanely tender and makes you wish you got two orders. The hot option comes in habanero peach and the mild option is a dry rub full of flavor without the heat. Lock 27 doesn’t stop there. They are making the bleu cheese dressing by hand with a little sriracha for an extra kick.
Grab one of their beers to accompany. Nothing better to wash down an order of these wings.

Company 7 BBQ
1001 S. Main St.
Englewood, OH 45322
These guys are more than brisket and pulled pork. Two reasons to make the drive north. Company 7 is smoking these wings in a wet marinade and then deep-frying to perfection when you order. These guys look like a standard naked wing until you take a bite. It’s the crispy fried wing you wish for with a smokey back-end you normally only get from a good slice of brisket or smoked pulled pork. The wing is one of a kind and is fall off the bone perfection so nothing is wasted.
Like Lock 27 you have options for beer to pair. Lock keeps 25 tabs of craft beers all the time. These wings are bold in flavor and will stand up to your favorite IPA or Dark Ale.

Nicks
1443 N. Detroit
Xenia, OH
I like options. Nicks is a joint older than the chicken wing for which they’ve become famous. When I say options I mean options. Nicks offers their wings breaded or naked (no breading is my preference) and you can enjoy 14 different sauces.
Fire in ya Hole | Nick’s Secret Sweet Hot Damn | Original Hot | Spicy Garlic | Asian Cajun | General Zen’s | On The Fence | Sissy Sauce | Sweet Bourbon BBQ | Sweet BBQ | Sweet-n-Sour | Honey Mustard | Mild | Nick’s Dry Rub
I split my order between Original Hot and Sweet Bourbon BBQ. The BBQ is sticky and sweet with a hint of bourbon to keep it exciting. I like the hot with Bleu Cheese dressing. It’s the way the Anchor Bar intended.
Bonus…order your favorite wings with a waffle. Just try it. Something crazy good about a hot wing and a syrup-covered waffle and Nick’s does it right.

Archers
9496 Dayton-Lebanon Pike,
Centerville, OH 45458
2030 East Dorothy Lane,
Kettering, OH 45420
The World’s 2nd Best Wings. That’s how Archers bills them. These wings are huge and tasty. This is my go-to here in Kettering for a quick lunch. Available in Mild, Hot, Archer’s Style, Destroyer, Sweet BBQ, Hickory BBQ, and Chipotle BBQ. You guessed it, I get mine with the hot and always get the celery and bleu cheese. These are lightly breaded and deep fried. No tricks. Just good chicken with great flavor.
Keeping up with the theme of great wings and beer, Archer’s is no slouch in the beer area. They have 20 rotating taps but I stick with the Archer’s Ale. I’m a creature of habit and a good hoppy ale seems to work with the oil carried spice of a deep-fried wing.
Here are a few more spots to get great wings in Dayton:
Bunkers Sports Bar
A very traditional wing that never leaves you disappointed. Cooked perfectly.
Romer’s Bar & Grill
Hard to beat the prices here. If you are wanting 10, order 15. Thank me later.
Ticket’s Pub
This is a great pub that happens to have fantastic wings, and gyros, Reubens, burgers, and a bevy of deep-fried bar goodness. Try the wings first. Then go back again and again.
Go ahead. Tell me. Where should I be getting great wings here in Dayton that didn’t make the list?
P. S.  Occasionally I make my own wings at home. I’m gonna share a secret with you. I have found the best recipe for getting my wings to restaurant quality. Alton Brown makes it easy for anyone to make at home, no deep fryer needed.

10 Beers for 10 Years at Lock 27

April 10, 2022 By Lisa Grigsby

Today is the 2nd release in Lock 27’s 10 Beers for 10 Years promotion releasing a beer from the Lock 27 Brewing vault to celebrate their 10th Anniversary! The re-released brews were made by Lock 27 at some point over the past decade but were eventually retired – until now. In coordination with the re-releases, customers can earn a chance to win limited edition anniversary prizes. With each 10th anniversary beer purchase, customers will be offered a stamp card that they can fill up with stamps for each anniversary beer purchased. The more stamps collected, the bigger the prize.

Release # w is 1492, an American Red IPA, was first brewed in 2013 as part of a Hop 101 experimental brewing series educating Lock 27 Brewing customers on the distinct characteristics of different hops. The Columbus hop was a fan favorite—enough to be officially named 1492 and be put on tap a few more times through 2017.

This brew is the perfect blend of strong hop flavor and sweet malts, with a moderately strong bitter taste that retains a dry finish and lean body – which makes IPAs so beloved. Its flavorful notes of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit make this Red IPA so distinctive, with an overall balance of sweet and hoppy.  Ohio.ABV- 7.7% and IBU- 77

Over the next month, Lock 27 Brewing will focus on the often-overlooked stories of this historic year from the perspective of the Native American community. They’ll be holding an educational event at the end of the month to highlight and celebrate Indigenous culture, contributions, and innovations. They’ll be sharing what the year 1492 meant to Native American people, and how their global contributions shaped the world that we know today. $1 of every 1492 purchase will be donated to the Sunwatch Indian Village to support the Native American community in Dayton,

This historic brew is hitting the taps at Lock 27 on April 14th at 5pm! Stay tuned on the 10th of each month for the next release.

10?’s with Chef Dane Shipp

February 17, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef Dane Shipp

Chef Dane Shipp is approaching his second anniversary in the kitchen of Lock 27 Brewery.  A graduate of the Sinclair Culinary program he’s been cooking around town for over ten years.  Having started at the downtown branch of Lock 27 in winter of 2018, he was recently promoted to Executive Chef, overseeing both locations of the breweries restaurants.   Having just rolled out 17 new menu items, he made some time to take on DMM’s Chef 10?’s interview:

1.  What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

My favorite ingredient to work with is garlic! It’s one of the most flavorful ingredients out there! I use it in a lot of my dishes. Roasted, fried crispy for asian dishes, sliced raw, etc…

2.  What ingredient do you dread?

I’d have to say the ingredient I dread the most is beets! Only because it takes a long time to cook, and it will stain you and everything around you!

3. What’s your favorite dish to make?

My favorite dish to make is pad kee mao (drunken noodles) I’m obsessed with asian cuisine, and that’s my favorite noodle dish. Spicy, and fresh ingredients!

Steak ramen

4. What’s your favorite pig out food?
That would have to be tacos! I can literally eat 20 tacos! One of the best creations ever made!

5. What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?
I go to a lot of different restaurants in the Dayton area! Because of my plant based diet I’m limited, but to name a few, Wheat Penny, Tik’s Thai Express, Taqueria Mixteca, Linhs Bistro, and Little Saigon!

6. What’s your best advice for home chefs?
My advice to home chefs is to try cooking with new ingredients! Experiment with new flavors! Gotta fail in attempts at different recipes in order to get better!

Scallops with bacon jam and roasted carrots

7. If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?

Lebron James– basketball was my first love, and I grew up watching him! He’s inspirational, and from a small town in Ohio like myself. I respect him a lot!
2 Chainz– I appreciate his taste in the finer things in life!  He not afraid to try different stuff, and I know he would appreciate my cooking!
Dave Chappelle– obviously everyone knows how funny this guy is! To be in a room with him would be a great experience! Comedians have different ways of thinking, and they are not afraid to say what they want. I respect his real ness
Barack Obama– Obama might be the coolest dude in the world! I just feel like he is always calm and chill! I feel like all those guys at a dinner party would create a really good vibe!

Lobster risotto

8. Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

Honestly I look up to the underdogs. They people who are famous chefs, or classically trained. I’ve never been trained by anyone, so I can relate to the people who just know how to cook really good from getting in the kitchen and working at your craft! I look up to people like action bronson, and Matty Matheson. I can relate to people like that.

9. What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
On a day off, I usually will go to a bigger city like Columbus or Cincinnati, and enjoy the city! Eating food, drinking cocktails, and experience all the culture I can!

10. share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
My lucky break was honestly coming to lock 27. I was at my previous job for 8 years, and they never let me showcase my creativity. When I came to lock, I was creating dishes within the first 2 weeks, and after a year I was the executive chef! So now I create 4-5 dishes every single week for both locations, and it’s a rare thing in Dayton, OH for a chef to have that much creativity that doesn’t own the establishment!

5 Secret Spots to Watch the Ohio State/Mich and Bengals/Browns

November 22, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

There are 2 big football rivalries this weekend..

Michigan at Ohio State Saturday Nov 24th at Noon and

The Browns at the Bengals Sunday Nov 25th at 1pm

You love to go out and see the games, but tired of crowds?

We have some tips on places to get good eats and watch the games without wrestling people for tables or a decent seat.

We call them our secret places for Food Adventures during popular sporting events ….

Get to the restaurant about 20 minutes before the games start and you should have no trouble grabbing a “primo seat.”

1) BENNETTS PUBLICAL in MIAMISBURG:

Sriracha Sweet Wings at Bennett’s Publical

67 S Main St, Miamisburg, OH 45342
This undiscovered gem, continues to amaze us. From their 7 bean soup from grandmas recipe, to their gorgonzola topped local beef steaks, this is a PERFECT place to catch the games. Plenty of TV’s and plenty of bottled and draft beer choices, this place features a full cocktail bar and a full menu that impresses. Other must eats are the wings and the fish platter. We love this place!

2) LOCK 27 in CENTERVILLE
1035 S Main St, Centerville, OH 45458
Sit at the bar or not and enjoy the games on this gastro pub’s TV’s. Some of the best local beers will also be at your fingertips. Their menu is a unique collection of memorable appetizers and sandwiches. There should be no problem finding a seat, and an afternoon of good day drinking and plush food. Must Eats are the smoked wings and any of their sandwiches. Enjoy the atmosphere !

Sticky Burger – loaded up by Big Ragu

3) ARCHERS TAVERN IN KETTERING’S ENCLOSED PATIO AREA
2030 E Dorothy Ln, Kettering, OH 45420
The enclosed patio area is a little known spot for seating under a couple of TV’s. There are also televisions in the bar area. The bonus here is a strong beer list and an affordable family friendly menu. Archer’s has spread its wings into Kettering and is a great spot to catch these games. MUST EATS: The Sticky Burger, Margherita Pizza and Wings with Sweet n Sexy Sauce.

4) THE DAYTON BEER COMPANY DOWNTOWN
41 Madison St, Dayton, OH 45402
Belly up to the bar or sit in the bier hall type atmosphere under the TV’s. This should give you a great spot to enjoy the games with the greatest selection of Ohio beers in town. Hungry? Try the Second Street Pizza window inside the establishment. Craft Beer and Pizza Pie with brutal rivalries? You can’t go wrong here !

At the Dayton Beer Company Bar

5) MCGILLICUTTYS on WHIPP RD
1980 E Whipp Rd, Kettering, OH 45440
Grab a “Mega Mug” of your favorite draft beer. This restaurant has some TV;s and even an old school projector screen. The bottom line is you can watch the game and enjoy some great eats. The bar is huge and has lots of domestic, national favorites. The food is some of the most underrated in the area. Must Eats are the breadsticks (they are seriously the Worlds greatest) with garlic butter or nacho cheese dip.  Also, the pizza is terrific.

There you have it. 5 spots to hit up the game while you eat, drink and be merry.
Whether your team wins or not, you will have had one heck of a Food Adventure.

Dayton Breweries Bring Home The Awards

May 21, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

This past weekend in Lexington, KY the finale of their Craft Beer week celebration was the Alltech Craft Brews and Food Fest. With 60 breweries pouring over 200 beers from across the US, the highlight of the festival is the Commonwealth Cup Craft Beer Competition. Beers were judged on appearance, aroma, flavor, body, color, carbonation, foam, clarity, balance, drinkability, technical quality, and overall impression.

The  Commonwealth Cup was awarded to the highest rated beer, which this year was awarded to Braxton Brewing Company for their Barrel Aged Dark Charge Mole Stout.

In addition to the Commonwealth Cup three tiers of recognition were awarded: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. A gold medal beer is an outstanding beer that displays the correct balance of taste, aroma and appearance appropriate for the style, and excellent technical merit.  Dayton breweries bringing home the Gold are:

Dayton Beer Company – 3 Gold Medals:
Beast of Tadmor Village, Upright Smoked Lager,
Midnight Dream

Hairless Hare – 3 Gold Medals:
Imperial CRV, Barrel Aged Barley Wine, Barrel Aged Cold War

A silver medal beer is an excellent product that displays the correct balance of taste, aroma and appearance appropriate for the style, and a high level of technical merit. The Miami Valley can claim seven silvers:

Crooked Handle – 2 Silver Medals:
Wee Bit O Trouble, Roadside Peanut Butter Porter
Hairless Hare – 4 Silver Medals:
Bitter Hare,  3 Quarter Porter, Kings Reserve, Kickback Kolsch
The Dayton Beer Company Lost Tunnel Deep Sea Diving
A bronze medal beer is a quality product with the correct balance of taste, aroma and appearance appropriate for the style, and the absence of major faults.  Area breweries brought in six bronze medals:
Devil Wind Brewing – 2 Bronze Medals
Heading East,  Steel Cut Stout
Lock 27 – 4 Bronze Medals
Alpheaus, Mouth Breather, Waterway, Brewing Charlosta
Crooked Handle:  Trinity Haze

A great showing for Dayton breweries, especially for Devil Wind to medal, as a rookie brewery.  We’re lucky to have such great local beers in the Miami Valley.  Hope you get a chance to taste all these award winners soon!

Food Adventure with American Idol Star, Alexis Gomez

May 27, 2016 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Alexis Gomez is a Food Adventures Fan !

Good things happen to good people. So is the case with local musician and national American Idol Star, Alexis Gomez.  Hard work and success has paid off for this fun natured, family loving young woman.  She is one of the nicest, down to earth people you could meet.  It isn’t every day that you get to go on a Food Adventure with a music star!

You may remember when she first stole America’s heart with her memorable TV debut, the audition scene where she “made it to hollywood”  HERE IS THE VIDEO.

Alexis took time out of her busy schedule to have lunch with us at one of her favorite spots, Boosalis Bakery in Crosse Pointe Center, Centerville.  Recently, she has been traveling to Nashville and Dayton to write and record music.  Alexis is also gearing up for a slew of concerts this summer ranging from Dayton area venues to the House of Blues, Cleveland!  Food Adventures sat down with Alexis, her mom and sister and of course we wanted to talk .. FOOD

But before we dive into that, let’s get to know one of Dayton’s upcoming stars and 2015 Amercian Idol Finalist..

Hand Tossed Cheese Pizza from Flying Pizza is a favorite

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON ALEXIS GOMEZ:

— She is a Dayton native who has been playing music and singing with her family her whole life.  She has many photos on her Instagram of early years playing shows, or rehearsing with her family.

— Very involved in her church, Alexis and her family believe in giving back to the community.  She has a strong spiritual upbringing, that has made her humble and well grounded, with a refreshing appreciation for life.

Food Adventure at Boosalis Baking & Cafe

— Alexis is definitely a foodie, and told us of her American Idol visits to some cities where she got to sample the area foods.  But many times, the contestants were served a strict diet, some of which included limited selections.   She laughed, telling us she doesn’t like mushrooms for breakfast.  But sometimes that was all they had to offer, so she was grateful when traveling and getting some “outside food.”

— How do you get her music?  EASY! Go to her ITUNES Page Here or her website AlexisGomezMusic.com

 — What’s next for Alexis? Look for more music from her and a busy 2016 tour scene, all over Ohio with a stop in Nashville and even the country of Poland.

From Dreams to Dreems & back again!

The Big Ragu, Hungry Jax and Chef House, talked food and took some yummy advice from this talented young lady…

Being in the top group for the 2015 American Idol, we thought it would be great for Alexis to tell us about her top 10 favorite places to eat in the Miami Valley, bar none ! SO without further delay…. here are her picks!

ALEXIS GOMEZ’ TOP 8 DAYTON FOOD PLACES:

1) DON PABLOS – Yes, we know it is a chain, but her Mexican roots call out to her current obsession – Don Pablo’s Prairie Fire Bean Dip.  There is a location near the Fairfield Commons Mall.

2) FLYING PIZZA:  She loves the hand tossed classic cheese pizza, a Dayton original!  Alexis also finds their breadsticks and cheese sauce irresistable.

Alexis Gomez  having lunch with some young fans

3) MI BURRITO MEXICAN GRILL:  Located at 8374 Princeton Glendale Road in Mason, Ohio, this place is a little known secret to Daytonians.   Alexis says it is worth the short drive for some amazing burritos, nachos and more Mexican specialties

.

5) CITY BBQ:  Her “go to” is the Chicken Tenders with the

6) BOOSALIS BAKING and CAFE: Alexis told us about an incredible trademark menu item here, and she was right!  The Cranberry Turkey Sandwich served with homemade cranberry bread is one of the best sandwiches Food Adventures has ever eaten.  Also those Kouign Amann pastries, pronounced “Queen Amann,” are delicate, delicious buttery pastries, that are reminiscent of a croissant in a cupcake shape.  You gotta try this place in Cross Pointe Center!

Lock 27, home of an incredible Keener Burger made with local beef

7) LOCK 27 BREWING:  Alexis says the Keener Burger is the best bet here.  Chef House agrees !

New Centerville Brewery, Lock 27 Set to Open June 21st + *****Gift Certificate Contest *****

June 14, 2013 By Dayton937 1 Comment

Owners Steve & Michelle Barnhart with Lock 27 Chef Aimee Saling

Here is something you will not see anywhere else, at least not this early.   A super exclusive, sneak peek at the brewery coming to Centerville called Lock 27.   The Big Ragu & Crew are not “Grand Opening ” hoppers.   In this case we are making an exception, because the person opening Lock 27 is a friend of ours.   Owner Steve Barnhart and his wife, Michelle are currently putting the finishing touches on the new brew pub located at 1035 S. Main Street in Centerville, not far from the new Kroger.  With plenty of buzz circulating around Dayton through word of mouth, and online, this brewery promises to be a popular spot for some good craft beer.  With the addition of Chef Aimee Saling, the food offerings will be a highlight as well.

Shrimp and Polenta: a Must Eat !

For the past 15 years, Steve Barnhart has literally been brewing beer as a ‘driveway hobby.’  His craft and interest grew into offering what now will be Centerville’s only “Gastro Tap Room.”    Fashioned after the pubs in London, this true mom and pop establishment will feature a rotating choice of in-house brews, hard to find bottled beers, and some popular craft brews on tap from other breweries.  It will be a relaxed atmosphere slanted towards adults, with good background music.  The front patio will eventually feature a communal table where patrons are able to enjoy drinks and bites outside.

Why the name Lock 27?  It is a tribute to Dayton.  Essentially at the turn of the century, Dayton was a river town, with traffic from the Erie Canal running right through the Miami Valley.   Lock 27 was an actual stop on the river near Miamisburg.  The rich history and river life of Dayton is mostly forgotten today.  Instead, inventions of flight are most often associated with the Gem City.

History lesson over, now back to the Food Adventure and what you need to know about Lock 27.

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

The Bar area inside Lock 27

— London Style Gastro Tap Room that will feature 5 in-house brews, 5 out-of-house beers on tap, unique bottled beer and wine selections.   Bottled and tap selections will focus on an eclectic mix of regional and national brewers.

— The menu will consists of 15-20 items including tapas and paninis.  Lock 27 will feature many “sharable” plates for a communal feel of a European Pub.

— Craft Beers, made in-house will rotate seasonally.  They will be brewed 1 or 2 barrels at a time.  With small batches, there are no commitments and this will allow for a constantly changing, and evolving brewery.  IMPORTANT !! – Since the inspections and liquor licenses have just been approved, in-house beers are being brewed now, and will not be served until approximately 3 weeks after opening.

— Hours will be 4pm-Midnight on weekdays, and 11am-Midnight on weekends

MUST EATS:

House Wheat Beer – In this case a must drink.  This wheat beer is a white ale instead of  a traditional hefeweizen.  This brew is made with California common yeast, for a different flavor.  Refreshing never tasted so good.

The Salumi Plate – A unique, appetizer featuring exotic cold cut meats of Prosciutto, Coppa, Gin & Juice Pepperoni, and Dodge City Fireball salami.  This plate is perfect for sharing.   It is also served with glazed walnuts, almonds and miniature gherkin pickles.  The slightly salty and spicy tastes of the meats match perfectly with any alcoholic beverage.

Cuban Sandwich –  This delicious panini style creation features ham and pulled pork .  It also has Emmenthaler cheese, which is a superior Swiss cheese from Switzerland and France.  What makes the sandwich is the crunchy bread and the spicy garlic, aoili mustard.   It is served with a side of chips tossed in spices.

The Salumi Plate: Unique cold cuts, enough to share

Shrimp and Polenta: This dish is big on taste.  The spicy shrimp with serrano pepper and beschamel sauce, contrasts perfectly with the creamy polenta.  We could have eaten this stuff all day.  Chef Aimee has captured simplicity and bold flavors with this offering.

Honorable mentions include bottled beers that are off the beaten path like Fullers ESB and La Fin Du Monde.

IN-HOUSE BEERS

On the beer front, Lock 27 plans to be broad in coverage, as opposed to genre specific.  It is their intention to celebrate all beer styles, not just be known for specific subgroups like “IPA” or “Belgian”.     Lock 27 will brew to a seasonal rotation,  so the first beers will be geared for summer.  What beers will be the first offerings?  Expect to see a “Summer Stout.”  They have worked hard on this recipe, so that it is appropriate for warmer weather.  It’s not heavy, rather a lighter body thirst quencher, that still maintains stout characteristics.  It is a cross between traditional English & Irish stouts, and not a big Russian Imperial.

Wheat Beer and its Creator

Also , they will be brewing 3 other beers.  A house British ESB (Extra Special Bitter), a Saison, and a Pacific North West inspired Session IPA should all be available in the next 3-4 weeks.  They even have a nickname for their brew kettle.  It is called Scarlett Brewhansson, please give her a visit.

So get your taste buds prepared and get ready to quench your thirst, because Lock 27 promises to be a hot spot this summer.    The addition of this restaurant just may make South Dayton the new Craft Beer headquarters of the Miami Valley.

Thank you to the management of Lock 27 for giving Food Adventures  access to this EXCLUSIVE scoop.   Make sure you tell the management,  The Big Ragu” sent you !”  Good drink and good food is what you can expect from Centerville’s newest restaurant.   Unique styles as opposed to the standard fare.  The spread of craft and high quality imports on tap alone will be an attraction, not to mention the brewery itself.  Will it be successful?  We think it’s a lock !

***CONTEST***  Please register below and comment on the story below and tell us why you want a $20 Gift Certificate to Lock 27.  One winner will be chosen at random on Monday !![form 55 “DMM Contest Entry – Generic”]
