Do You Have Something To Say at TEDxDayton 2018?

February 22, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

On Friday, October 12th TEDxDayton will return for what will hopefully be a sixth sellout event,  with about 20 speakers taking the stage to share their thoughts, beliefs and passions.  And if you believe you’ve got what it takes to be one of them, it’s time to start thinking about what you’ve got to say.   They’ll want to know what your idea is, why it’s worth spreading, why you’re the right person to talk about it and what your call to action to the audience will be!

The official Call For Speakers is now open and here’s the link to apply.

Organizers will consider speakers who can present ideas in technology, entertainment, design and social topics, among others. Ideas could include the evolution of social responsibility, the meaning of authenticity to different generations, the future of unmanned systems technology and impact, rehabbing the river for recreation, and the importance of water in our lives, for example. Formats include ideas worth spreading, jaw-dropping technology, an amazing personal story, new research, fresh takes on a unique trend, or any idea that fascinates or educates.

Selected candidates will then be asked to audition in a series of TEDxDayton Call for Speakers. “The Call for Speakers is how our TEDxDayton organizers reach into the community to find the best and brightest – and often undiscovered –  thinkers, doers and creatives to the TEDx stage,” said speakers committee co-chair Ron Rollins. “We can’t wait to see who turns out.”

Need some inspiration?  Check out the video’s from 2017 speakers here.

Welcome Dayton Welcomes Monica Harris

February 16, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

The Dayton City Commission announces Monica Harris is the newly hired Coordinator for Welcome Dayton.

Harris brings extensive experience relevant to Dayton’s immigrant friendly city initiative, having served as coordinator of a multi-cultural community health project and as manager of a workforce development and college success program.

A New York City native, Harris was born to immigrants from Taiwan and interned with community development organizations in South Africa. She holds graduate degrees in counseling and international community development.

“I have been navigating and bridging two very different cultures (East & West) my whole life

and love working in cross-cultural contexts,” Harris said. “Because I grew up in an immigrant family and watched the struggles my parents went through to adapt to the U.S.–as well as the help they received in order to become successful contributors to our country–the work of Welcome Dayton has particular resonance with me. I am excited about the opportunities this position gives me to support all those working to ensure that Dayton will always be a welcoming city to the immigrants and refugees who call it their home.”

“Welcome Dayton has made great progress in building a more welcoming community since its inception less than seven years ago,” said Commissioner Matt Joseph. “We are excited to welcome Monica Harris and expect the community will benefit from her experience and abilities as we take steps for further success.”

Welcome Dayton was launched in 2011 and is administered by the Dayton Human Relations Council. Welcome Dayton promotes immigrant integration into the Dayton region by encouraging business and economic development, providing access to education, government, health and social services, ensuring equity in the justice system, and promoting appreciation of arts and culture.

Dayton was named the nation’s first Certified Welcoming City in 2017 by Welcoming America, a national non-profit organization supporting welcoming activities in communities throughout the country.

The Big Read is Going to the Dogs

February 12, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

The Big Read is going to the dogs! The annual community reading project hosted by area libraries, colleges, Books & Co., and others, is focused this spring on the unique ability of dogs to impact human lives.

By popular vote last fall, readers chose The Underdogs: Children, Dogs, and the Power of Unconditional Love by Melissa Fay Greene to be the topic of book discussions and special events taking place March 4-April 14 across the Miami Valley. The Underdogs tells the story of Xenia, Ohio-based service dog organization, 4 Paws for Ability and its founder, Karen Shirk. The book weaves the latest scientific discoveries with Karen’s story and the stories of children with disabilities and their families.

Sponsoring libraries have a variety of dog-focused programs scheduled – ranging from dog massage to basic obedience to K-9 law enforcement and more. 4 Paws for Ability will lead more than a dozen programs giving insight into their service dog training program, along with demonstrations by a dog in training. There are also more than 30 book discussions scheduled at participating libraries.

“The book showcases a nationally recognized organization that is based right here in the Miami Valley, and we’re looking forward to all the excellent discussions and other programs related to the book and its themes,” said Dayton Metro Library’s Ben Murphy, co-chair of The Big Read.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Author Melissa Fay Greene, along with 4 Paws founder Karen Shirk, pays a visit to the Dayton Metro Library on Thursday, April 12, 6:00 pm in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum. They will talk about the book, the dogs that are trained at 4 Paws, and the wonderful families they serve. Audience questions are welcome.

“We’re eager to learn about how Ms. Greene researched her book, how she worked with Ms. Shirk on the project, and to hear more about families who have been impacted by the unconditional love of dogs,” said Murphy. It will be a homecoming for the author, who lived in Dayton when she was a child. The program is free and open to the public.

A complete schedule of events, as well as information on the book and the author, is available at BigRead.org.

Toad the Wet Sprocket’s Glen Phillips Coming to Dayton

February 12, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Glen Phillips may be best known as the singer and songwriter of the alternative rock group Toad the Wet Sprocket,  is on tour supporting his latest solo album, “Swallowed By The New” and Toad’s most recent album, “New Constellation.”

“I enjoy the spontaneity of acoustic performance, where I can take the show wherever it needs to go and follow the lead of an audience instead of following a set list. There’s more talking, more stories, and more of a loose feel. The subject matter is on the serious side, but I feel like the perspective is ultimately positive. Life is about changes, no matter how we may try and pretend otherwise. This album is all about learning how to face change.” – Glen

Glen will be performing on Sunday May 6th at the Yellow Cab Tavern at 8pm.  Doors will open for seating at 7pm.

Tickets go on sale on Feb 16th at  https://glenphillips-dayton.eventbrite.com   and will be $20 in advance and if still available $25 at the door.

Sing For Your Supper

February 5, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

“Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun”

How many of you sang the above jingle?

On Tuesday, Feb. 6th between  3-7 pm customers who sing the old Big Mac commercial jingle  at one of the 14 participating Scott Family McDonald’s locations in Miami County, Sidney and Huber Heights can choose one of the three Big Mac sandwiches offered at the restaurant for free.

Locations for the contest are in Piqua, Tipp City, Troy and Sidney, as well as the Huber Heights store on Merrily Way.

Fun Facts about the Big Mac:

The Big Mac was created by Jim Delligatti, an early Ray Kroc franchisee, who was operating several restaurants in the Pittsburgh area.  The Big Mac turned 50 years old in 2017.

The Big Mac had two previous names, both of which failed in the marketplace: the Aristocrat, which consumers found difficult to pronounce and understand, and Blue Ribbon Burger.

The third name, Big Mac, was created by Esther Glickstein Rose, a 21-year-old advertising secretary who worked at McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.

The Big Mac has 540 calories and 34 grams of fat.

There are an average of 178 sesame seeds on the bun.

It originally sold for $0.45

The Big Mac is known worldwide and is often used as a symbol of American capitalism. The Economist has used it as a reference point for comparing the cost of living in different countries – the Big Mac Index.

The Big Mac Sauce is delivered to McDonald’s restaurants in sealed canisters designed by Sealright, from which it is meant to be directly dispensed using a special calibrated “sauce gun” that dispenses a specified amount of the sauce for each pull of the trigger. Its design is similar to a caulking gun.

The Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – on a sesame seed bun concept for the jingle was created by Keith Reinhard, Chairman Emeritus of DDB Worldwide, and his creative group at Needham Harper and Steers.

On August 22, 2007, McDonald’s opened the Big Mac Museum in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania to celebrate the Big Mac’s 40th anniversary.

Book Fair Awards $30,000 to Local Charities

February 2, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

On Friday, February 2nd  the Book Fair Foundation presented checks for ten thousand dollars each to the Artemis Center, Caesar’s Ford Theatre Co. and Dayton Public Radio; all beneficiaries of the proceeds from the 2017 Dayton Book Fair in  a reception held at the 804 Meeting Space on Monument.

Larkin Vonalt, Book Foundation Executive Director

The mission of the Book Fair Foundation, Inc. is to receive and collect donated books which we resell through an annual book fair and other channels in order to raise money for a variety of charitable interests. In addition, we also redistribute donated books to schools, clinics, nursing homes, soup kitchens, the county jail, and other entities where books are needed.

Their annual Book Fair is held the second weekend in November at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton, Ohio.

Each year the Foundation chooses three beneficiaries from applications of local non-‐profit organizations to receive the proceeds from Ohio’s largest book fair, which takes place the second weekend in November at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

2018 Dayton Book Fair Beneficiaries are:

We Care Arts – a non-profit organization that helps developmentally disabled adults and youth achieve greater personal independence. Through a variety of art classes and experiences, we promote the artist’s individuality, self esteem, community skills, ability to focus, life skills, responsibility, confidence and job skills.

Through the creation and sale of their individually crafted items, artists are able to affirm their self worth, take steps back into the mainstream of society and receive a supplemental income. We Care Arts provides all training and materials to artists and a portion of the proceeds of all sales is returned to the artist. The remainder goes back to program funding.

Rebuilding Together Dayton – Rebuilding Together Dayton is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization that assists low-income Dayton homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, to live in warmth, safety and independence by building community partnerships and providing home rehabilitation.  Rebuilding Together Dayton is the only organization in the Miami Valley dedicated to rehabbing owner-occupied homes for low-income homeowners at no cost. Through in-kind labor and donated materials, Rebuilding Together Dayton is able to expand every dollar raised into $4.

Victory Project – The Victory Project breaks down the walls of captivity. By undoing the youths isolated experiences, we expose them to the potential of a positive socioeconomic standing through education, entrepreneurship and enlightenment. Our youth no longer depend on a criminal or social system which can enable their destructive lifestyles. 5 Fabulous Fundraisers in February

February 2, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

The fact that Dayton was recognized on the Travelocity list of  25 Most Giving Cities in the U.S. is no surprise to us at MostMetro.com.  Having put together the most comprehensive list of charity events in the region for the last 10 years, we’ve seen how many people are willing to give back and help others in this community.   We’ve got a list of area fish fry’s that make a difference to so many and each week, Fifth Street Brewpub allows different non-profits to guest bartend each Monday to raise funds and Old Scratch Pizza has  Cones for a Cause Program that has raised over $20,000 dollars for area charity’s in the past year and Warped Wing Brewery  and Milano’s are just a couple  of the  local businesses that have established fundraising programs.

It’s hard to choose which events to support each month, but here are suggestions for February Fundraisers:

A Special Wish Foundation Annual Valentines Dance

Friday, February 9 @ 7 pm – 11:30 pm  $150/person

A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton has been making special wishes come true for local children for over 30 years. These wishes wouldn’t be possible without the continued generosity of the community. I ask you to join ASW and continue to give local wish kids and their families’ memories that will last a lifetime.

The 13th Annual Valentines Dance benefiting The Dayton Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation is the area’s only wish-granting organization!  This fun and unique event will be held at the Wright State University Nutter Center on Friday, February 9th, 2018.

Vue Ultra Lounge Contents Up For Auction

January 29, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

For almost 14 years, this Washington Township bar was the place you went for a good time.  With  plasma screens displaying the latest music videos and sporting events in sync with an awesome sound system, a jammin’ dance floor and aLight Show  that could rival the hottest NYC night clubs the Vue Ultra Lounge was Dayton’s hippest bar.   Not to mention the coolest ladies restroom around- with your own bartender and camera’s to watch what’s happening at the bar when you’ve excused yourself to powder your nose.

The VUE offered a sophisticated atmosphere and the friendliest staff.  Many of us have some great memories of nights spent there, or at least we’ve heard the stories of the fun we had! But all good things come to an end and on New Year’s Eve, the Vue threw it’s final bash.

Now you have a chance to own a piece of Vue Ultra Lounge.

Worley Auctions has posted the catalog of  352 items for sale as a part of the online auction.  So whether you’re nostalgic for one of the plush benches, a martini flight  or one of the many neon’s, you’ve now got the chance to buy one.

You can check it all out online, or preview the items on Tues, Feb. 20th between 4 and 6pm at the club, which is located at 1004 Miamisburg Centerville Rd.   The auction will close on Wed, Feb 21st at 2pm and winning bidders can pick up their items on Thurs, Feb 22nd between 10am and 6pm.

Taco Bell Fries Have Arrived

January 27, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Lousville, Ky.-based Yum! Brands has finally brought fries to their Taco Bell chain. In what they claim is “the the most-anticipated menu item release of the year” these Mexican fries arrived at the fast foot eatery this past week.

So in the name of research, I ran for the border to try them, ok not really the border, but the Taco Bell on St. Rt 741.   The $1 Nacho Fries are dusted with what Taco Bell has dubbed, Mexican seasoning. The regular $1 order of fries comes with a side of Taco Bell’s signature cheese sauce for dipping.

You also have the option to  upgrade your Nacho Fries to Supreme for $2.49 or Bell Grande for $3.49, where they’ll be topped with  beef, nacho cheese, sour cream, and pico de gallo.  As you can see from the picture of my “supreme” order the pico de gallo was just chopped tomatoes.

The best deal is the Nacho Fry box for $5 which comes with the new nacho fries, a cheesy Gordita Crunch, a Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco and a medium drink.

Taco Bell says the fries will be available through March.
