10 Must Attend Miami Valley April Fundraisers

April 1, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton long ago earned a reputation for being a city that gives back. According to the history of the Dayton Foundation, NCR founder and Chairman John H. Patterson championed innovative projects for the betterment of the community. Joining him in his enthusiasm was his sister-in-law, Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, and nephew, Robert Patterson, son of John Patterson’s brother, Capt. Robert Patterson, all active community leaders in their own right. A leading businesswoman, Julia Patterson Carnell helped establish the Dayton Art Institute by donating works of art, a mansion that served as the museum’s first home and $2 million towards the construction in 1930 of its current facility.

Robert Patterson was a senior executive at NCR and a leader in community affairs. He helped to found the local Boy Scouts and the Dayton Rotary Club and was active with the YMCA, Chamber of Commerce and Miami Valley Hospital.

Today there are over 4000 nonprofits in the region, and to continue the legacy of taking care of our community, there are hundreds of fundraising events to support them. To see our complete list of charitable events for 2018 check our DMM calendar.

Passover Menu at Meadowlark

March 30, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Wiley and the crew at Meadowlark Restaurant, located at 5531 Far Hills Ave. in Kettering, debuted their special Passover Menu tonight and it will run through Saturday, April 7th.  Here’s what they are offering:

Early Spring Beet Salad with Herbs, Pistachios and Raisins! Beets, carrots and daikon are cut into long matchsticks and dressed with lemon and olive oil, tossed with toasted herb leaves, pistachios and golden raisins and piled juicily onto a swath of pistachio butter, as in rich nut butter, not dairy. The perfect first course when the weather is finally turning!

Smoked Whitefish Spread with Shaved Vegetables and Za’atar Matzoh
House-smoked haddock blended with cream cheese and a smidge of horseradish makes the perfect savory spread, set atop a salad of herbs with thinly shaved radishes, cucumbers, celery and tomato paired with matzoh baked with a brushing of olive oil and a sprinkling of za’atar, the Middle Eastern herb, sesame seed and salt mix.

Hummus with Spiced Lamb, Pinenuts, Parsley and Chile Oil
Warm, spiced ground lamb on smooth, cool hummus is a real treat, scattered with crunchy pinenuts and chopped parsley, then drizzled with spicy chile oil. Served with raw carrots and matzoh.

Chicken Marbella (pictured above)
A classic New York roast chicken recipe, and just as good as it was when it took the Upper West Side by storm in 1982. Developed by a tiny food shop called The Silver Palate, the chicken is marinated in oil and vinegar along with capers, garlic, olives and prunes, then dusted with brown sugar and braised in white wine for an irresistible briny-sweet flavor. Served with the pan juices rice and broccolini.

“Everything Crusted” Salmon with Yogurt Sauce- Salmon Filet Crusted with an Everything Bagel Crust minus the bagel!

Red Wine and Onion-Braised Beef Brisket with Horseradish Gremolata
Beef brisket roasted slowly in wine and stock with onions that take on flavor and melt into the juices is the kind of supper that warms you from the inside out. Minced fresh horseradish, lemon zest and parsley is a delicious variation on traditional gremolata, brightening up the long-cooked meat with a jolt of freshness. Crispy Yukon potatoes, sautéed roasted carrots and asparagus and plenty of the to-die-for juices accompany.

Chocolate Coconut Meringue Cake
Thin layers of meringue packed with organic coconut are stacked and covered in bittersweet French chocolate ganache for the grown-up Mounds bar of your dreams.

Chocolate-Tahini Ice Cream Pavlova
Ben’s homemade chocolate-tahini ice cream sits on a crisp meringue base, drizzled with a rich banana caramel, flanked with slightly sweetened tahini sauce and strewn with a sesame seed-almond crumble. A riot of textures with wonderful sesame front and center.

10 ?s with Chef Aaron Watson

March 27, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

There’s a new face in the kitchen at the Dayton Convention Center, Chef Aaron Watson.  Technically he’s employed by Spectra by Comcast Spectacor, who handles the food service for the Center.

Prior to his recent move to Dayton Watson was the Executive Chef of Babalu Tapas and Tacos in Lexington, KY.  Owner Al Roberts described Watson as “very talented and energetic and outgoing with the public.”   He also described Watson as “very emphatic about working with local suppliers and  he built invaluable relationships with producers of local agriculture.”

Chef describes himself  as an over achiever, with hands on experience managing high volume kitchens, which is a good thing since his first big event in his new kitchen at the Convention Center will be the 2018 Delta Sigma Theta Debutante Ball this weekend for over 1000 guests.

Watson earned his Associates of Applied Business in Hospitality Management as well as Restaurant Marketing, Professional Chef and Human Resource and Management Certifications from Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland.

To help you get to know the new Chef in town, we asked him to answer our 10 ? interview and here’s what he had to say:

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:

A fellow cook at the time had been working very long hours for over a week. Mainly shifts he had picked up to gain extra money. Stress was surmounting due to him working a second job and also holding the position of Pastor at a local Church. One night he comes over to me and asks if I can close his station so he can leave early. I told him I had been busy all night and have a lot to do closing my station already. He asked several other people to no avail. He then began yelling that no one will help him and then completely freaked! He started throwing hand fulls of baked potatoes into the oven with cans of Vegaline, threatening to blow us up. He than began slinging pans of ketchup and bbq sauce all over the walls while yelling about us not being a team. One of the cooks ran off the line in fear to get a manager from the FOH. At that point, the cook then scurried to gather all the hotel pans from the floor, emptied the oven of potatoes and pan spray. Then he ran in the back to the mop sink, grabbed the water hose and sprayed all the sauce off the walls, squigied the floor and stood in front of his station as if nothing ever happened? The manager finally comes back to the kitchen with an anxiety filled expression and sees everything running as usual. That was the day we all realized just how crazy Ed actually was! Things never felt quite as safe after that…

Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DCC Brings Equality Tour to Dayton

March 21, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

In March 2018, Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington (GMCW) will embark on its second bus tour. They will take their Make America Gay Again concert on the road to spread a message of equality, dignity, and justice to ten cities over four days. They  will partner with local churches, LGBTQ centers, and gay-straight alliances to raise awareness and much-needed funds, so these organizations can continue to do the vital work that they do. The goal of the Equality Tour is to bring people together and start conversations while spreading a message of equality through song.

Their Dayton appearance has been coordinated by  Michael Knote of Have A Gay Day. He was contacted by the GMCW and  they suggested doing a fundraiser here in the Dayton community. Michael was able to secure a venue and helped coordinate local LGBT group to promote the event.  Proceeds from this “Concert for a Cause” will benefit The Greater Dayton LGBT Center, PFLAG Dayton, The Gatlyn Dame Group, and Have a Gay Dayton.

The concert will be held this Friday March 23 beginning at noon and lasting about an hour at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 515 E. Third Street in Dayton. The Washington D.C. chorus of about 100 will arrive in Dayton via three tour buses as a part of their “Equality Tour” in which they will visit 10 cities in four days to aid churches, LGBTQ Centers, and Gay Straight Alliances in raising funds for their respective local communities. Our local Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus will join the D.C. chorus in song.

General Admission tickets: $10 and Student and Senior Tickets are $8.

Tickets are available online or at the door.

After the show have lunch at Table 33 between 1:30 and 3:30pm and they’ll make a donation from your bill to the Concert for a Cause.  You can also bring your ticket to MJ’s on Jefferson and they’ll waive your cover charge on Thursday night.  Saturday, Marcy 24th Wheat Penny will donate a portion of their proceeds from sales between 11am – 5pm to the cause as well.

10?’s With 2018 Chef Showdown Champ Crystal Coppock

March 19, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

The judges with Crystal.

The third times a charm for Wheat Penny Chef Crystal Coppock.  On Sunday afternoon at The Dayton Home and Outdoor Living Show, before a standing room only audience,  Crystal took her mystery bag of Marrow Bones, Gorgonzola Cheese, Bacon and  Angel Food Cake, enhanced by her special anchovy butter and some ingredients from the Whole Food Pantry  and created the winning dish, as judged by James Beard Award winning Chef Anne Kearney, former C’est Tout owner Dominique Fortin and Nestle Corporate Executive Chef George Sideras.

Crystal, a Dayton native, has been been cooking since her childhood. What started as a hobby quickly turned into the passion which paved the path to her eventual career.

Crystal’s childhood memories of the kitchen revolve around her grandma, Clarine Baldwin. She can recall standing at her grandma’s side as Clarine would cook Southern family favorites from scratch, such as chicken and dumplings or cornbread. Crystal was completely enamored by Clarine’s ability to transform things as simple as flour and eggs into healing and delicious meals which would then be celebrated by family and friends.

Qualifying round of Chef Showdown with Crystal, Rae Rosbough and Jon Mezera on Sat, March 17th

Crystal would later go on to pursue Culinary Arts at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center in Clayton, Ohio, graduating in 2008. She worked in several kitchens, both corporate and local before eventually finding her place as Sous Chef at Wheat Penny Oven and Bar. The passion for food and people displayed at Wheat Penny by its owners Elizabeth Wiley, Elizabeth Valenti, and Dave Rawson resonated with Crystal.  The message is simple and powerful: Cook great food for great people.

After entering the showdown in 2016, making it the finals in 2017, in 2018 Crystal walked away with the $500 grand prize and bragging rights.  Right after her win, we asked her to answer our Chef 10 Questions and here are her answers:

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

2017 Chef Showdown Finals

I’m a huge fan of fish.  It’s so versatile, but also requires some technique to execute properly. Additionally,  I really enjoy using vinegars, they can breathe a new life into some pretty dull things.

What ingredient do you dread?
Oh man, I truly don’t know.  I don’t care for chicken breast, but I can’t say I dread it.

What’s your favorite dish to make?
I love making fresh pasta,  equally I love sauce making.  I care a lot about texture and depth of flavor.

What’s your favorite pig out food?

Cooking at Wheat Penny

Dips of all kinds.  I’m a sucker for a good guacamole.

What restaurant, other than your own, do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?
Corner Kitchen,  without a doubt.

What’s your best advice for home chefs?
Challenge yourself and accept that you’re going to mess some things up.  Cooking should be fun, and you should explore it.

If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
Hmmm… I don’t have a good answer for that.  I really enjoy sharing food with people, that’s why I do this work.  So really,  anyone who genuinely appreciates good food.

Who do you look up to in the industry and why?

Marysa & Crystal – photo by Megan Powell

A lot of people, but in particular Dave Rawson. He is so knowledgeable but very modest.  I try to model my management style after him.  He’s a really spectacular chef and mentor.

What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
I hang out with my wonderful wife,  Marysa and we like seeing movies,  going to dinner,  going to museums or just hanging on the couch with our dog.

Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
Well, who could forget about the time I forgot the sauce during the first chef showdown? I’ve learned a lot about focus since then.

Patti LaBelle Returns To The Rose

March 12, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Patti LaBelle – “The Godmother of Soul” – will make a stop at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH for a hit-filled evening on Sunday, July 15th.

Beautiful, simply does not describe the incomparable force known to the world as Patti LaBelle. As time continues to evolve, the soulful songbird’s name has become synonymous with grace, style, elegance and class.  Belting out classic rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards and spiritual sonnets have created the unique platform of versatility that Ms. Patti is known and revered for.

It’s a small wonder that Patti has time for anything else in between recording and touring, but she makes time and the world is oh so happy that she does!  Patti has written five best-selling books, Don’t Block the Blessings, LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About, Patti’s Pearls, Patti LaBelle’s Lite Cuisine and Recipes for the Good Life. More recently, she introduced Patti’s Good Life, a successful line of food products that features a variety of sauces, sweet potato pie and cakes and has starred in her own highly rated cooking specials on the Cooking Channel and Food Network.

In addition to her amazing career as an entertainer and entrepreneurial success, Ms. LaBelle’s work as a humanitarian is just as legendary. She remains an advocate for adoption, foster care, Big Sisters and the United Negro College Fund, among many other initiatives.  While Ms. LaBelle’s celebrated 50-plus year career is respected world-wide, she has also endured and survived personal strife. Within a 10-year period, she lost her mother, three sisters and best friend to diabetes and cancer. In 1994, LaBelle was diagnosed with diabetes and shortly thereafter became a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association.

The same motivation that had Patricia Louise Holte blossom from a choir member to lead vocalist for Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles and later Labelle, to a solo artist is the same energy that keeps her fire burning at seventy-one years young. “Each year I grow, and that’s a blessing from God.  I do what I can do.  I do what I feel God has given me the energy to do, so I just go out there and I do it…It’s not about making money because I don’t need money, but I need to sing.  With a voice or without, I’ve got to get on that stage.”  And the world is thankful that Ms. Patti’s voice sounds so good to our ears.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning 11am on Friday, March 16th atwww.Ticketmaster.com and www.Rosemusiccenter.com. Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000. *Ticket prices include parking and are subject to applicable Ticketmaster fees.  Dates, times and artists subject to change without notice. All events rain or shine.

How Many Meatballs Can You Eat?

March 2, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

If you think you can eat a lot of meatball you should sign up for Mamma DiSalvo’s 2nd annual Meatball Eating Contest.  On Thursday, March 8th at 6pm in the DiSalvo’s Party Room contestant will have 2 minutes to chow down on as many meatballs as they can. Contestants pay $10 to enter and the winner not only gets bragging rights and a $50 gift certificate to Mamma DiSalvo’s and a gift basket of Mamma’s goodies!  If you think you’ve got a wining appetite you can sign up online to compete this year!  It’s also a timely contest, since March 9th is National Meatball Day!

Last year there were 10 men (hopefully some women will sign up this year) who took on the challenge and started out with a plate of a dozen meatballs and were informed they could not use a fork or their hands to eat with.  Many of our contestants had grand ambition  thinking they  would eat 20-30 meatballs. With fans cheering the meat eaters on, Kris Mick was declared the winner eating 13 meatballs!  Kris also won the first winner of the Submarine House Super Duper Cheesesteak Challenge.

Judges for the event will include The Big Ragu from Dayton’s Food Adventure Crew and Dayton.com’s Sarah Franks.

Jason Isbell Returns to The Rose

February 26, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Following a wildly successful tour in 2017, GRAMMY award-winning Jason Isbell and The 400 will return to the road in 2018. The tour will make a stop at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH on Tuesday, July 17. The show will feature support by special guest Hiss Golden Messenger.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s new album, The Nashville Sound, is a beautiful piece of American music- making, but watch yourself: it will light a fire under you. This album is a call, and the songs on it send sparks flying into a culture that’s already running so hot the needle on the temperature gauge is bouncing erratically in the red. And while it’s understandable that, in this moment, some people want their radio to help them drift away, this finely calibrated set of ten songs is aimed right between the clear eyes of people who prefer to stay present and awake. It’s a call to those who won’t cower no matter how erratically the world turns, and who aren’t afraid of what looks back when they look in the mirror. Bruce Springsteen did that. Neil Young did that. Jason Isbell does that.

As with Isbell’s 2013 breakthrough, Southeastern, and his double-Grammy-winning follow up, 2015’s Something More Than Free, The Nashville Sound was produced by Dave Cobb. Isbell says that he and Cobb created a simple litmus test for the decisions they made in the two weeks they spent at RCA Studios (which was known as “The home of the Nashville Sound” back in the ’60’s and ’70s): they only made sonic moves that their heroes from back in the day could’ve made, but simply never did. It’s a shrewd approach—an honest way to keep the wiz-bang of modern recording technology at arm’s length, while also leaving the old bag of retro rock ’n’ roll tricks un-rummaged. Lyrically, The Nashville Sound is timely. Musically, it is timeless.

It’s also worth noting that this album isn’t credited to Isbell alone. For the first time since 2011’s Here We Rest, Isbell’s band, the 400 Unit, gets title billing. “Even when I was writing, I could always hear the band’s stamp on the finished product,” Jason says. “These songs needed more collaboration on the arrangements to make them work, and I felt like the band deserved it after the way they played.” Given Cobb’s strict insistence on cutting songs live with no demos or rehearsals, you can easily imagine how the brilliantly raw performances on the record will translate to the stage when the band takes these new songs out on the road.

And boy, there’s nothing like a 400 Unit show. Not just because the band smokes, but also because Isbell’s fans are among music’s most ardent. And when the band kicks in, they are ecstatic. It’s a rock ’n’ roll show that feels like fellowship.

Which begs a question: Why do Jason’s songs strike us so deeply? What makes this music of the soul? The answer has to do with Jason’s authenticity, his intellect, his rootedness in both tradition as well as modernity. Simply put, Jason has a gift for taking big, messy human experiences and compressing them into little combustible packages made of rhythm, melody and madly efficient language. The songs are full of little hooks—it could be guitar line that catches one listener, or a quick lyric that strikes to the heart of another—and an act of transference takes place. The stories Jason tells become our own. The music is coming not from Jason and the band, but from within us.

As you listen to this record, you will hear many themes: humor, heartache, wisdom, beauty, hope. But chief among them, strangely, is leadership.

If Southeastern (2013) was the Getting Sober record (Jason has been searingly honest in both songs and interviews about the time he spent in rehab), and Something More Than Free (2015) was the New Clarity record, maybe this one, The Nashville Sound, is the Way Forward.

And who better to lead us forward than Jason Isbell? Jason is a relentless and fearless self interrogator. And this album is a challenge, a gauntlet in song: Let’s claim ownership of our biases (“White Man’s World”). Let’s embrace and celebrate the uncomfortable idea that the force that activates both life and love is death (the instant classic “If We Were Vampires”). Let’s consciously choose light over darkness (“Hope the High Road”). And for God’s sake, if you are feeling anxious, alone, disenfranchised, depressed, mad, or scared, find something that gasses you up and work at it (“Something to Love”). Jason, it seems, after years grinding the rail that separates terra firma from the brink, has put in the sweat equity it takes to hug it out with his demons and fill his life with meaning, bright and clean.

Tickets for the Huber Heights show will go on sale to the public beginning 11am on Friday, March 2nd atwww.Ticketmaster.com and www.Rosemusiccenter.com. Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.

Edible Cookie Dough Shop Coming!

February 24, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Miamisburg will soon be home to the  first gourmet, edible cookie dough shop in the region.  Entrepreneur Lyndsey Rhodus will open Spoonfull  the edible cookie dough place this April at 36  South Main Street, across from the Plaza Theater and next to Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop.  Originally from West Alexandria, the family lives in Miamisburg and felt that the downtown area was just the perfect area for their scoop shop.  This will be a first time food business, for Rhodus, a long time home cook with a self confessed addiction for desserts.

This sweet idea for a business was inspired by a road trip to Nashville, where Rhodus first tasted edible cookie dough.  She says she “was intrigued and started researching this trendy treat, which has proved to be a huge success for boutique bakeries from New York City to California.”  The eggless cookie dough is made with heat-treated flour and is meant to be eaten by the dip and not baked.

Sugar Cookie Dough- a light, buttery, creamy dip will satisfy any sweet tooth.

The family run shop will feature five core flavors:chocolate chip, sugar cookie, lemon, peanut butter and chocolate mint, with seasonal flavors like brownie batter making special appearances on the menu.  And of course their will be topping choices like sprinkles, m&m’s, Oreo’s, Reeces Pieces, marshmallows and more! You’ll be able to order it in a cup or on a cone or for a quick treat by the spoonful, dipped in chocolate.  They will even offer gift packs – making it easy to pick up and share delicious bites of dough.

Rhodus also plans to offer cookie dough sandwiches, buckeye and other sweet treats, and plenty of milk and water to wash it down with.

Anticipating an early April opening, the shop will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am – 9pm.  Follow them on Facebook and stay tuned for more information on the grand opening and ribbon cutting.
