Bengals Announce Ring Of Honor Inductees

July 20, 2023 By Guest Contributor

The Bengals today announced that QB Boomer Esiason (1984-92, ’97) and WR Chad Johnson (2001-10) will be added to the team’s Ring of Honor in 2023. They will join Ken Anderson, Willie Anderson, Paul Brown, Isaac Curtis, Anthony Muñoz and Ken Riley in the Bengals Ring of Honor.

“Boomer and Chad were both exceptional players,” said Bengals President Mike Brown. “If you look at the statistics, Boomer has a long list of quarterback firsts here. And Chad was a superb athlete who was probably the quickest receiver we have had here. They could have moments when they just carried the team by themselves. Both players are very deserving of this honor.”

Esiason is regarded as one of the greatest locker-room leaders in Bengals history. In 1986, he earned his first of three Pro Bowl bids with the Bengals while leading the NFL’s most productive offense. In 1988, he led the NFL with a 97.4 passer rating and helped the Bengals win the AFC Championship. That year, Esiason was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player by the Pro Football Writers of America and the Associated Press. Esiason ranks third in Bengals history with 27,149 passing yards and 187 touchdowns.

“I will always remember I got this because of the season ticket holders,” said Esiason. “They’re the ones who have the memories. They’re the ones who spend the money to support the team. They’re the ones who know who their favorite players are and who had the biggest impact when they were there. That’s not to be taken lightly or ever taken for granted.”

Ring of Honor Induction Press Release 2023

The Ring of Honor induction ceremony will take place during halftime of the Monday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 25. Fans may purchase tickets for all home games at bengals.com/tickets or by calling Bengals Fan Relations at (513) 621-8383.

TICKETS

One of the most popular players in NFL history, Johnson’s fun-loving charisma intersected perfectly with the rise of social media and transformed a quotable star athlete into a Twitter pioneer. Between his elaborate choreographed touchdown celebrations and bombastic boasts, he was one of the most electrifying players of his era. During his 10 seasons in Cincinnati, Johnson became the franchise’s all-time leading receiver with 10,783 yards, the third most in the NFL during that stretch.

“It means everything,” said Johnson. “To be shown appreciation for all the years of hard work is awesome. It’s a great honor and I’m very appreciative. I’m getting my flowers now while I can smell them. To me, this honor means much more than getting a gold jacket, honestly. This is home. The fans understand the good times and the bad times, the ups and downs, and they accepted me as my true authentic self. This is a welcome home – you will always be a part of us – and this means a lot to me. A lot.”

Dayton Made – Famous People From Our City: Cris Collinsworth

April 1, 2021 By Greg Simms Jr.

Cris Collinsworth is synonymous with the NFL like very few have ever been in American history. The television sportscaster, star pro football player, star college football player, website owner, and lawyer, has become an actual part of football, and American culture.

Collinsworth was born in Dayton on January 27, 1959. He and his family moved to Florida when he was four years old. As he grew older, he became an All-American quarterback in high school. He accepted a scholarship from the University of Florida to play for the Gators in 1977. Collinsworth’s position switched from quarterback to wide receiver his sophomore year of college, and he would become a great player, becoming a first team All-SEC selection three times, and a first team Academic All-American.  Cris was named as an MVP of the ‘1980 Tangerine Bowl’. He was admitted into the ‘Student Hall of Fame’ for the ‘University of Florida’ in 1981. He graduated college that same year, with a BA degree in accounting.

After his college career ended, Cris was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round (thirty-seventh pick overall) of the 1981 NFL Draft. At six feet, five inches in height, Collinsworth often created mismatches against much smaller cornerbacks.  In addition to his height advantage, Collinsworth was a legitimate deep threat due to his speed. During his eight year career with the Bengals, he was named to the Pro Bowl three times, and surpassed 1,000 receiving yards four times. He also played in Super Bowl XVI. In 1985, Colllinsworth signed with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League, but the contract was voided when he failed the physical due to a bad ankle. He returned to the Bengals and played for them until the end o the 1988 season. During his eight year career with the Bengals, he was named to the Pro Bowl three times, and surpassed 1,000 receiving yards four times. He also played in Super Bowl XVI.

Collinsworth’s post football career(s) have been as, if not, more impressive than his former one. He’s been a broadcaster for numerous television and radio shows in the past few decades. Here’s a list:
– Reporter for “Inside The NFL”, HBO/Showtime.
– Sportscaster for NBC, college and pro football.
– Broadcaster for “Fox NFL Sunday” and “NFL on Fox.”
– Broadcaster for Wimbledon, HBO.
– Color commentator for “Sunday Night Football”, NBC.

I could add more to the list. Actually, I will. Collinsworth is also the owner of the highly influential website Pro Football Focus. And, in the midst of accomplishing a ton, Cris found the time to earn a law degree.

One of the most accomplished people in the country was born on Miami Valley soil. And special soil it is.

Full disclosure: My favorite Collinsworth accomplishment is the “Collinsworth Slide.” Check it out on the clip below.

5 Secret Spots to Watch the Ohio State/Mich and Bengals/Browns

November 22, 2018 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

There are 2 big football rivalries this weekend..

Michigan at Ohio State Saturday Nov 24th at Noon and

The Browns at the Bengals Sunday Nov 25th at 1pm

You love to go out and see the games, but tired of crowds?

We have some tips on places to get good eats and watch the games without wrestling people for tables or a decent seat.

We call them our secret places for Food Adventures during popular sporting events ….

Get to the restaurant about 20 minutes before the games start and you should have no trouble grabbing a “primo seat.”

1) BENNETTS PUBLICAL in MIAMISBURG:

Sriracha Sweet Wings at Bennett’s Publical

67 S Main St, Miamisburg, OH 45342
This undiscovered gem, continues to amaze us. From their 7 bean soup from grandmas recipe, to their gorgonzola topped local beef steaks, this is a PERFECT place to catch the games. Plenty of TV’s and plenty of bottled and draft beer choices, this place features a full cocktail bar and a full menu that impresses. Other must eats are the wings and the fish platter. We love this place!

2) LOCK 27 in CENTERVILLE
1035 S Main St, Centerville, OH 45458
Sit at the bar or not and enjoy the games on this gastro pub’s TV’s. Some of the best local beers will also be at your fingertips. Their menu is a unique collection of memorable appetizers and sandwiches. There should be no problem finding a seat, and an afternoon of good day drinking and plush food. Must Eats are the smoked wings and any of their sandwiches. Enjoy the atmosphere !

Sticky Burger – loaded up by Big Ragu

3) ARCHERS TAVERN IN KETTERING’S ENCLOSED PATIO AREA
2030 E Dorothy Ln, Kettering, OH 45420
The enclosed patio area is a little known spot for seating under a couple of TV’s. There are also televisions in the bar area. The bonus here is a strong beer list and an affordable family friendly menu. Archer’s has spread its wings into Kettering and is a great spot to catch these games. MUST EATS: The Sticky Burger, Margherita Pizza and Wings with Sweet n Sexy Sauce.

4) THE DAYTON BEER COMPANY DOWNTOWN
41 Madison St, Dayton, OH 45402
Belly up to the bar or sit in the bier hall type atmosphere under the TV’s. This should give you a great spot to enjoy the games with the greatest selection of Ohio beers in town. Hungry? Try the Second Street Pizza window inside the establishment. Craft Beer and Pizza Pie with brutal rivalries? You can’t go wrong here !

At the Dayton Beer Company Bar

5) MCGILLICUTTYS on WHIPP RD
1980 E Whipp Rd, Kettering, OH 45440
Grab a “Mega Mug” of your favorite draft beer. This restaurant has some TV;s and even an old school projector screen. The bottom line is you can watch the game and enjoy some great eats. The bar is huge and has lots of domestic, national favorites. The food is some of the most underrated in the area. Must Eats are the breadsticks (they are seriously the Worlds greatest) with garlic butter or nacho cheese dip.  Also, the pizza is terrific.

There you have it. 5 spots to hit up the game while you eat, drink and be merry.
Whether your team wins or not, you will have had one heck of a Food Adventure.

Check out our feature articles each and every week here on Dayton Most Metro.

Ickey Shuffles into Dayton May 8th

May 6, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Monday May 8, 2017 Golf Outing

Monday May 8th, former Cincinnati Bengal star, Ickey Woods, shuffles into the Dayton area for charity, and he needs your help.  It is for a cause named after his late son, Jovante, who succumbed to a severe asthma attack during his high school years.

The Jovante Woods Foundation is hosting an event at NCR Country Club called “Fairways for Airways” to benefit a cure research for Asthma and help promote awareness of the dangers of the condition.

Food Adventures is proud to be a small part of this event.  We look forward to a fun day of golf with friends and celebs.

Ickey Woods

Archer’s Tavern, Boyle Mechanical, Dayton Freight are the major sponsors of the event.  The 2017 Fairways for Airways Celebrity Golf Outing on the South Course of the NCR Country Club is the 2nd annual event for this cause. The weather forecast is calling for clear skies with little to no chance for rain.  Temperatures should be in the high 50s for the noon shotgun start and the low 60s during most of the outing. Perfect Golf Weather.  There is still time for you to sign up for this one of a kind experience.

Each foursome will be paired with a celebrity for a round of golf.

In the past, former Reds, Bengals and Buckeye stars have been participating.  Former appearances have included James Brooks, Tom Browning, Archie Griffin, Jim Breech, Pete Johnson, Yancy Thigpen, Andy Harmon, Dmitri Young, Barney Bussey, Steve Caminiti, Richard Carey, Doug Pelfrey, Dan Wilkinson, Eric Shaw, Ernie Mills, Eric Thomas, Frank Minnifield, Lonzell Hill,  Joe Kelly, Robert Jackson, Kanavis Mcghee, Katie Blackburn, Michael Wiley

 and of course Ickey himself…

Event to be at NCR Country Club 5/8/17 9:30am

Registration and the driving range open at 9:30am. You are encouraged to register as soon as you arrive.

Buckeye Vodka is hosting the Buckeye Bloody Mary Bar beginning at 10:00 A.M. All vodka drinks are compliments of Dayton’s very own Buckeye Vodka!

A lunch buffet will be served beginning at 10:30.

Throughout the event, bottled water and sports drinks will be available compliments of US Foods.

Complimentary (and outstanding) beer will be available thanks to the beer sponsor, Lock 27 Brewing.

A familiar face to Dayton area Charities, Dan Apolito of Archer’s

There is a fantastic silent auction throughout the day featuring some very impressive sports memorabilia, a US Flag flown over the capital building donated by Congressman Mike Turner and Sharon Lowery, a day of fly fishing with Ickey Woods, an impressive basket from Buckeye Vodka and some great golf gear and summer gadgets from Heidelberg Distributing.

After the round of golf, mingle, swap stories and snap some pictures with former college and professional football, baseball and basketball greats. This truly is an event you will never forget, and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

LAST MINUTE SIGNUP – email [email protected]  The cost is $1,500 per foursome.

Archer’s Tavern is one of the major sponsors of “Fairways for Airways” Celeb outing

Thanks again to Dan Apolito, owner of Archer’s Tavern and Ickey Woods for setting everything up. The Food Adventures Crew looks forward to slinging some beers and swinging some clubs for charity.

We hope you can make it last minute if you are interested, but the sooner you contact Dan, the better chance you have of getting a spot.

Walking Dead Food Adventure & Zombie Dogz at Horror Hound Weekend

March 28, 2013 By Dayton937 1 Comment

‘Juan of the Dead’ Zombie Dog

Here is something you will not see anywhere else.  The Big Ragu and Crew had a VIP experience at last weekend’s Horror Hound convention in Sharonville.  We had a Food Adventure with Merle & Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead (Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker)!  Featured along with the Cast of the Walking Dead and many celebrities was a Dayton’s own,  Zombie Dogz.  Typically a food truck, it was a little different this time for the gourmet hot dog masters.   They operated out of a catering booth inside the convention center.     Owners of  Zombie Dogz,  Lee and David VanArtsdalen and Horror Hound Magazine’s Eric Crowley personally invited us to the event and set us up for an unforgettable Food Adventure.

The Big Ragu and Crew shared some iconic Dayton foods with the celebrities:

We had a Zombie Dog with a Reservoir Dog.  That’s right, we dined and joked with Michael Madsen.  Michael was a great sport, and he didn’t carve our ear off.   He shared some good Hollywood stories and laughs with us.  We also learned he was telling other celebrities about his time with us and the Zombie Dogz.

Legendary horror film director John Carpenter also enjoyed one of Dayton’s Zombie Dogz with us, while he was wearing some pretty sweet black velvet sweat pants.  It was almost as scary as his film “Halloween.”   Meeting this giant of the film industry was priceless.

We gave a hungry Twisted Sister Frontman Dee Snider some Mikesell’s Good n Hot Potato chips.  In fact, the whole cast of his show “Holliston” shared the bag.  What does Dee wanna do with his chips?  ‘He wants them hot, HOT !’   This Celebrity Apprentice star loved the taste of Mikesells, and we were not ‘fired’ in the boardroom.

Dee Snider from Twisted Sister & Celeb Apprentice loves Mikesells Chips

The star of the scary Candyman movies Tony Todd, loved the box of Esther Price Candies we gave him.   He enjoyed them so much, he gave us a high five the next day.   Even movie stars like the Candyman love Esther Price Candies !

Remember the classic 60’s TV show The Munsters?  Well, we ate Muenster cheese with Eddie Munster, thanks to Murray’s Cheese from Kroger in Centerville.  Eddie, played by Butch Patrick, appreciated it so much, he signed a photo for us!

The  Big Ragu and Crew ate lunch with Bengals Defensive Tackle Domata Peko .  We enjoyed some LaRosa’s Pizza while sitting with his family.  Domata is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.  He is also a horror movie fan like us,  and was excited to meet the various celebs.

Where else can you see this kind of stuff?  Only here, only Food Adventures and Dayton Most Metro.  Often imitated, never duplicated.

The Big Ragu also shared French Bread and Perrier Sparkling Mineral Water with 80’s babe Diane Franklin from the movie “Better Off Dead.”  If you saw the movie, you get the significance of the food items, ‘and to drink…. Peru’ .  These days Diane is promoting her new book “Diane Franklin: The Excellent Adventures of the Last American, French-Exchange Babe of the 80s.”  You can buy the book here on Amazon.com.

We hung out with other famous horror actors including Lew Temple, Sid Haig, Tom Savini,  Irwin Keyes, Robert Mukes and many other costumed monsters.  The original car from the movie Christine was there, we wanted to take it to the Root Beer Stande Drive in but she turned us down.  Special mention to our friends at S.T.A.R.S Cincinnati, a costumed fan group of the movie “Resident Evil.”  They do charity appearances and their slogan is “We kill zombies for charity.”  Speaking of Zombies….

The “Calling in Dead” Zombie Dog has Mac N Cheese on top

About Zombie Dogz:

Have you tried a Zombie Dog?  These hot dogs are so big, that they almost look like kielbasa sausages.  The menu at Zombie Dogz is pretty simple.  It all starts with large, juicy all beef hot dog.    The hot dog is placed into a wonderful sandwich roll, strong enough to hold the hot dog and ingredients intact.  What makes a zombie dog special is the choice of toppings.  Each Zombie Dog has a creative name based on those toppings.  The menu is constantly evolving with new creations, but The Big Ragu and Hungry Jax ate these hot dogs all weekend and want to share our favorites.

Zombe’ Grande – The all beef hot dog is topped with cheese queso sauce, lettuce, cilantro sour cream, jalapeno bacon bits and crushed corn chips.  The mix of the cheese sauce and crushed corn chips are a gooey, tasty combination that won us over.  This was definitely one of our favorites

Juan of the Dead – An all beef frank topped with Swiss cheese, homemade bbq pulled pork, sweet and tangy mustard and pickles.  The pulled pork and pickles really make this gourmet hot dog.  The Big Ragu say this is a must eat!

The Nibbler – This time they wrap the hot dog in bacon, then smother it in spicy chili.  The zombie dog is then topped off with diced red onion, sweet & tangy mustard, and shredded muenster cheese.  This one really woke up our taste buds and is a Food Adventure in your mouth.

Owners Dave and Lee VanArtsdalen of Zombie Dogz, with Co-founder/Marketer Michael Whitaker

Calling in Dead  – This over the top creation tops the hot dog with homemade mac n cheese.  The creamy mac n cheese is cooked in truffle oil for a magnificent flavor.  The final touch in this hot dog is a sprinkle of truffle salt and cracker crumbs.  This hot dog was so rich, we could hardly finish it.  It packed a powerful punch on our appetites, but we couldn’t stop eating it.

Brain Daddy – This was the most Caribbean style hot dog that we tried.  The all beef dog is topped with slow roasted mango habanero pulled pork.  It was also topped with pineapple-cherry salsa.  The final dash of white and black sesame seeds finishes this masterpiece.  This gourmet dog promises to have your taste buds dancing the mambo.

The Horror Hound Weekend was incredible. We got to meet Dayton horror film makers like our pals from Concept Media Films.  We even bought a couple of their Dayton-made DVD’s!  Meanwhile The Big Ragu was distracted by the Jersey girls over at GorgeousAndGory.com.  Supporting local people and making new Food Adventure fans seemed to sum up this fantastic experience.

This Zombie Dog is called “The Nibbler”

Miami Valley foodies should keep their eye open for events featuring the Zombie Dogz Food Truck and their unique creations.  The hot dogs will satisfy your hunger at the not so bad price of $6.50 per dog.  There are even have veggie dog options.  Want to catch Zombie Dogz Food Truck’s next event?  Then visit Dayton’s Crafty-Con on April 5th.  The event will be held from 5pm to 11pm at the Yellow Cab Building on 700 East 4th St.   Tell the zombies that The Big Ragu sent you !

Feel free to comment on the Zombie Dogz Food Truck below.  Also share any thoughts about Horror Hound Weekend as well.
