Buckeye Vodka

Calling All Bartenders-Buckeye Vodka Video Challenge

March 31, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Buckeye Vodka is inviting Ohio bartenders to create their own Buckeye Vodka recipe and mixology video for an opportunity to earn a cash award and little financial support. By posting their videos to their social channels, tagging @BuckeyeVodka and using the hashtag #BVBartender, they’ll be submitted to win one of five cash awards ($4,500 divided among winners). It’s Buckeye Vodka’s way of supporting this well-deserving segment of the community, during a time they need it most. Video’s must be posted by May 1st.

Not a bartender? Well, you can show your support, too. Buckeye Vodka is asking the local community to rally around our bartenders and give back in a unique way. Fans can ‘like’ and comment on the professional bartender videos and for every like/comment, Buckeye Vodka will donate an additional $1 (up to $3,000) – and it all goes back to our loved bartenders. Plus, if you’re feeling creative, we encourage you to create your own mixology video using Buckeye Vodka for a chance to win Buckeye Vodka gear. Three Consumer/Fan prizes winners will win buckeye vodka gear

May 6, 2017 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

Monday May 8, 2017 Golf Outing

Monday May 8th, former Cincinnati Bengal star, Ickey Woods, shuffles into the Dayton area for charity, and he needs your help.  It is for a cause named after his late son, Jovante, who succumbed to a severe asthma attack during his high school years.

The Jovante Woods Foundation is hosting an event at NCR Country Club called “Fairways for Airways” to benefit a cure research for Asthma and help promote awareness of the dangers of the condition.

Food Adventures is proud to be a small part of this event.  We look forward to a fun day of golf with friends and celebs.

Ickey Woods

Archer’s Tavern, Boyle Mechanical, Dayton Freight are the major sponsors of the event.  The 2017 Fairways for Airways Celebrity Golf Outing on the South Course of the NCR Country Club is the 2nd annual event for this cause. The weather forecast is calling for clear skies with little to no chance for rain.  Temperatures should be in the high 50s for the noon shotgun start and the low 60s during most of the outing. Perfect Golf Weather.  There is still time for you to sign up for this one of a kind experience.

Each foursome will be paired with a celebrity for a round of golf.

In the past, former Reds, Bengals and Buckeye stars have been participating.  Former appearances have included James Brooks, Tom Browning, Archie Griffin, Jim Breech, Pete Johnson, Yancy Thigpen, Andy Harmon, Dmitri Young, Barney Bussey, Steve Caminiti, Richard Carey, Doug Pelfrey, Dan Wilkinson, Eric Shaw, Ernie Mills, Eric Thomas, Frank Minnifield, Lonzell Hill,  Joe Kelly, Robert Jackson, Kanavis Mcghee, Katie Blackburn, Michael Wiley

 and of course Ickey himself…

Event to be at NCR Country Club 5/8/17 9:30am

Registration and the driving range open at 9:30am. You are encouraged to register as soon as you arrive.

Buckeye Vodka is hosting the Buckeye Bloody Mary Bar beginning at 10:00 A.M. All vodka drinks are compliments of Dayton’s very own Buckeye Vodka!

A lunch buffet will be served beginning at 10:30.

Throughout the event, bottled water and sports drinks will be available compliments of US Foods.

Complimentary (and outstanding) beer will be available thanks to the beer sponsor, Lock 27 Brewing.

A familiar face to Dayton area Charities, Dan Apolito of Archer’s

There is a fantastic silent auction throughout the day featuring some very impressive sports memorabilia, a US Flag flown over the capital building donated by Congressman Mike Turner and Sharon Lowery, a day of fly fishing with Ickey Woods, an impressive basket from Buckeye Vodka and some great golf gear and summer gadgets from Heidelberg Distributing.

After the round of golf, mingle, swap stories and snap some pictures with former college and professional football, baseball and basketball greats. This truly is an event you will never forget, and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

LAST MINUTE SIGNUP – email [email protected]  The cost is $1,500 per foursome.

Archer’s Tavern is one of the major sponsors of “Fairways for Airways” Celeb outing

Thanks again to Dan Apolito, owner of Archer’s Tavern and Ickey Woods for setting everything up. The Food Adventures Crew looks forward to slinging some beers and swinging some clubs for charity.

Cocktails with Champagne: A New Way to Ring in a New Year

December 30, 2015 By Brian Petro

Champagne in a coupe

New Year’s Eve means champagne, champagne, and more champagne!

No one appreciates champagne like they used to. The bubbly wine was created, accidentally, in England in the 16th century. The process was developed over the next two centuries, first to get the bubbles on a regular basis, then to create a bottle with the strength to contain the pressure of the carbon dioxide in the wine. Once the bottles stopped exploding, this treat became a favorite in the French courts. The French leaned to the sweeter sec and demi-sec varieties, while the English preferred the drier bruts. The wealthy were the only people that could afford it initially, turning it into a status symbol for extravagance and a rare treat for the working class. Champagne and all of its sparkling white wine compatriots have become much more common since the beginning of the 20th century, but the effervescence of the liquid and the pop of the cork kept the drink in celebratory circles.

New Year’s Eve is here, and champagne corks will be exploding for the evening. Most people will just enjoy the bubbles and the flavor out of either a toasting flute or a coupé. Experts and extreme lovers of champagne will drink it out of a white wine glass, which combines many qualities of the flute and coupé. This is a fine way to enjoy any sparkling wine, but it is not the only way. There are many cocktails over the years that have been developed with champagne as a co-star to other flavors being created. The cocktail, and your tastes, should dictate the type of champagne you choose to add. The list of champagne cocktails is a long, long one, so I have selected a handful that include spirits people usually have on hand or are easy to find.

BOURBON – Seelbach Cocktail

The Seelbach is named after the Louisville, Kentucky hotel it was created in. Most cocktails ask for a dash or two of bitters. This one calls for multiple dashes of two different bitters. They help balance out the sweetness of the champagne and the Cointreau (orange liqueur).

1 oz. bourbon
1/2 oz. Orange liqueur (Cointreau is what the recipe suggests)
7 dashes Angostura bitters
7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
Champagne

Pour the orange liqueur, bourbon, and bitters into a mixing glass over ice. Stir, and then strain into a champagne flute. Fill with champagne and enjoy.

Belle of Dayton Distillery

Our very own Belle of Dayton, providing something to mix with champagne!

RUM – Sparkling Rum Punch (courtesy of My Recipes)

There are two great reasons to go with a punch when it comes to rum. First, from a traditional standpoint, rum is very common in classic punch drinks. Rum and brandy were very popular libations in the heyday of the punch in the late 18th century through the middle of the 19th century. Second, having a punch cocktail at a party allows guests to help themselves to something delicious as they arrive.

2 c. fresh, low pulp orange juice
.5 c. orange liqueur
.5 c. dark rum (Belle of Dayton has a 1775 Colonial Reserve that looks perfect)
2 750 mL bottles of chilled champagne

Blend the orange juice, orange liqueur, and rum into a medium bowl. Place in the refrigerator to chill and allow the flavors to marry for an hour. Before guests arrive, move the mixture into a larger bowl and add the champagne. Serve chilled.

GIN – French 75

The 75 mm field gun the French used at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century was a massive anti-personnel weapon. It delivered a variety of ammunition to the enemies of France, from shrapnel filled explosive shells to canisters of toxic gas.  When Harry’s New York Bar in Paris blended gin and champagne into one glass, many said the cocktail had the same kick as this powerful weapon. Like the versatile weapon this is named after, it can be made with gin or cognac.

.5 oz. lemon juice (about half a lemon)
.5 oz. simple syrup (1:1 mixture of sugar and water)
1.5 oz. gin
3 oz. champagne

Combine the lemon juice, simple syrup, and gin in a mixing glass over ice. Shake, and strain into a champagne flute. Add the champagne and enjoy!

Tequila Champagne Cocktail

Tiny bubbles…dancing with my cocktail.

TEQUILA – Lime Sparkler (courtesy of She Knows)

This is something like the marriage of Jesse James and Sandra Bullock: you are not sure how it happened or why it worked, but it did. For a while, at least. Fortunately, liquors stay together for a longer time. The tequila-lime-sweet combination is a classic, and the champagne adds an extra burst of flavor.

1 oz. blanco (silver) tequila
.5 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
.5 oz. agave nectar (you can use simple syrup, but the nectar adds some richness)
Champagne

Combine the lime juice, agave nectar, and tequila in a mixing glass with ice. Shake, and strain into a champagne flute. Fill with champagne, and serve.

BEER – Black Velvet

When Prince Albert of England passed away in 1861, the country went into mourning. His wife, Queen Victoria, was inconsolable, and mourned the loss the rest of her life. At the time of his death, everything was draped in black. Clever bartenders at the time poured some Guinness into the champagne served at royal events, giving it the same black covering the rest of the décor had. It did not, however, make the people who drank it sad.

Stout (Guinness is the traditional selection, but any will do)
Champagne

Fill the champagne flute half way with champagne. GENTLY float the stout on top of the champagne. If you pour too quickly, the champagne will foam up and over the edge of the glass.

VODKA – Sparkling Cosmopolitan (courtesy of Inspired Taste)

Champagne cork popping

Happy New Year! And happy cocktailing!

There is a wide variety of cocktails that incorporate vodka and champagne. Vodka is neutral enough to just add some kick to the cocktail and allow any other flavor, usually fruity, to shine through. This is another champagne concoction that modifies a base cocktail by adding some sparkle.

1.5 oz. vodka (Buckeye Vodka fans, this one’s for you!)
.5 oz. orange liqueur
.5 oz. cranberry juice
.5 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
Champagne

Pour the vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, and lime juice in a mixing glass. Shake well, and strain into a champagne flute. Fill with champagne, and serve.

Whether you are christening a boat or celebrating a major event, champagne’s traditional hold on the celebration market is far from over. There will always be a thrill when the cork pops out and the bubbles start to fly. Keep the cork flying to a minimum, though. Shooting someone’s eye out is not the best way to start the new year. For them or for you. Cheers!

Grab Your Mask for Dayton’s Party of Parties “MASQUERAGE”

October 15, 2012 By Lisa Grigsby 11 Comments

As charity fund-raisers go, the AIDS Resource Center Ohio’s Masquerage has earned a reputation as being an over the top, all out bash.  The masked ball was dubbed  Dayton’s Party of Parties by  Ron Rollins of the Dayton Dayton Daily News several years ago and  this themed event has continued to grow.  Started in 2002 by Square One Salon owners Brent Johnson, Doug Henderson and Josh Stucky at Therapy Cafe, the party has grown and moved across town, to such unusual venues like The Merc, The Foundry and it’s latest home- the Roundhouse at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Designer Chris Newman

Hundreds of volunteers will spend the week transforming the two story white barn into a fantasy set, under the direction of designer Chris Newman, owner of Cheeky Monkey, an interior design and faux painting company.  Newman volunteered in 2009 to help with one room at the Circus themed event that year, as then stepped up the next year as the creative visionary behind the Heavenly Pleasures and Sinful Delights 2010 Masquerage.   In 2011 the ARC Ohio party celebrated a Decade of Decadence, bringing back some of  the scenery and entertainment of the past 10 years.

Masquerage 2012…Where Evil Can Be Tempting will pay homage to Vixens and Villains.  This theme was chosen to encompass a wide range of costume possibilities- from Gangsters and Molls of the 2o’s and 30’s, to B Movie Vixens, and without a doubt there will be some Disney villains like Cruella De Vil, Ursulas and  Maleficent.  While costumes aren’t required, over the years more and more of the crowd has gotten into the spirit, and  last year about 70% of the crowd were decked out. But the one thing that is required of all party guests is a mask, and whether you choose an elaborate professionally created head, a mardi gras mask or have one painted on, your options are endless.  Make up Artist Kelly Heuss explains “the painted on masks are the most comfortable, as often the plastic ones get pretty hot and sweaty when you’re dancing the night away. ”  You can make an appointment with Kelly  of www.airodynamic.net to get a mask painted on at Square One Salon, the Beauty Box and Mac cosmetics counters are also offering the service.

Cake Hope & Love’s Red Velvet Cupcakes will help raise $ for Masquerage.

What makes Masquerage more than just a dance party is the entertainment.  Over the years there have been Aerialists dangling from silk ropes, escape artists, contortionists, dance crews, fire dancers, knife throwers, and more. While ARC Ohio won’t reveal the line up for this year, they promise to continue the tradition of sexy, sultry and super eye catching performers.

And what’s a party without great food.  Chef Matt Hayden of Scratch Catering has created amazing munchies over the years and always has something tasty planned.  Cake Hope & Love will be featuring some sweet treats this year and has even gone a step further by offering to donate a a portion of all proceeds from the sale of their red velvet cupcakes from their Beavercreek store to ARC Ohio.

All  guests will be welcomed with a Jaegermesiter cocktail and Yeungling Beers and Buckeye Vodka are the barsponsors this year.  General admission tickets are $50, which is exactly what it costs ARC Ohio to administer one HIV test.  Testing is provided free to anyone who asks, and the test is a swab of the cheek with results in just 20 minutes.

If you prefer to attend Masquerage as a VIP, splurge for the Red Ribbon Lounge tickets, which include valet parking by Lexus of Dayton, face painting, all of your drinks, appetizers, entry into the 2nd floor lounge and the always coveted Swag Bag for $150.   Tickets can be purchased online  or at Square One Salons, Lexus of Dayton or Ghostlight Coffee. Tickets will be available at the event, but will cost $10 more there. The party starts at 8pm and runs til 1am, but the fun won’t end then, the official Masquerage After Party is hosted by MJ’s Cafe at 119 W. Third Street.

Buckeye Vodka Nabs Gold Medal In National Tasting

November 10, 2011 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) awarded a Gold Medal to Buckeye Vodka this week. The tasting occurred in BTI’s Tasting Room in Chicago, IL, on November 1, 2011.

Buckeye Vodka actually received two awards. The first was a Gold Medal with an “Exceptional” rating, earning 92 points out of 100 on BTI’s rating scale, as well as a “Best Buy” award, indicating it to be of extraordinary value. Buckeye Vodka is priced under $20 per 750ml bottle across the state. In its review, the BTI praised Buckeye Vodka as “an exceptional smooth and clean vodka for every application.”
“The Buckeye Vodka family could not be happier with the rating,” said Jim Finke, CEO of Crystal Spirits LLC. He continued, “Our team spent countless hours perfecting Buckeye Vodka and to get national recognition for our Ohio brand is just wonderful.”

Finke hopes the Gold Medal will translate into continued success as far as sales are concerned. Last week, the company reported that sales during its first six months of operations tripled expectations. Buckeye Vodka sold 2,000 cases of product between April and October, contributing nearly $500,000 to the Ohio economy.  “We certainly welcome the “Exceptional” rating from BTI and expect it will resonate with Ohio consumers who have not yet tried Buckeye Vodka,” said Robinson C. Cooper, Vice President and General Manager of Southern Wine and Spirits of Ohio, distributor of Buckeye Vodka. He added, “We intend to promote Buckeye Vodka as a gold standard for spirits crafted in Ohio.”  Finke also believes Ohioans will take notice, saying, “The Gold Medal proves that people here in the heartland know good vodka. Our fans have served as our most important ambassadors, consistently promoting and endorsing Buckeye Vodka aone of the best vodkas they’ve tasted. Now, they’ve been proven right.”

The BTI recruits a panel of industry experts to award its annual ratings. The panel blindly tastes each spirit in a controlled environment under identical circumstances. The ratings are then determined by a statistical method relying on the mode, or most frequent score, instead of the mean, the average score. The BTI credits this method for creating ratings closer to the panelists’ true feelings and reducing the
impact of maverick scores.

Buckeye Vodka was one of three Ohio vodka brands receiving Gold Medals from the BTI, the others being Crav Spirits of Avon Lake and Middle West Spirits of Columbus.
About Buckeye Vodka:
Capping its first batch by hand in spring, 2011, Buckeye Vodka is a family-owned artisanal vodka company with a vision of bringing an ultra-premium vodka to consumers at a price that reflects Ohioan sensibilities. since 1919. Its state-of-the-art distillation process ensures an extraordinary purity and exceptional taste. We invite you to make Buckeye Vodka part of your next great Ohio celebration. To learn more, visit us online at www.BuckeyeVodka.com.

Buckeye Vodka Martini’s Anyone?

May 23, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Whenever  I hear talk about martini’s  Sean Connery’s voice pops into my head in his most quoted  James Bond line “shaken not stirred.” And while mixologists worldwide will continue to debate debate shaken versus stirred, gin versus vodka, I’d much rather just drink a martini. Archer’s Tavern (9496 Dayton Lebanaon Pike in Centerville) will give us all a chance to sip on a cocktail as they debut 8 new Buckeye Vodka Martini’s this Tuesday night.  From 6-8pm you are invited to join Buckeye CEO Jim Finke for a tasting of flavored martini’s for $3 each.  Or if you prefer your vodka with tonic, those will be just $2.50.  Since it’s April debut this Dayton distilled vodka has been making quite a splash across the state.  If you haven’t already tried it, this will be a great chance to do your own taste test.

But back to the Shaken Vs. Stirred Debate.

  • Shake your Vodka Martini
Why: For a vodka martini to be good it needs to be cold. Very Cold! Therefore, shaking a vodka martini makes it colder.
  • Stir your Gin martini:
A gin, or traditional, martini benefits by being smooth and one can enjoy the delicate flavors of the individual gin.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT
From the the British Medical Journal (on-line edition)

“Shaken martinis may enhance the antioxidant effects of alcohol, making them healthier than the stirred variety!”
